Title: Mountain of 15mm Fantasy (New 12/03/23 - Friends go Forth)
Post by: LouieN on July 09, 2020, 06:38:57 AM
Hello All,

Seeing if this works.

A lone hunter takes him at a magnificent prey; a huge Winter Wolf.  That pelt would catch a fortune back at Neverwinter.

Unfortunately for the poor hunter; Wolves are not solitary creatures.

Painted these up for a future encounter when the adventurers travel to Icewind dale.

THE TEST WORKED, EUREKA!!!!

Hey lets try this again,

Throughout the six year struggle known as the War of the Dwarves and Orcs there were numerous skirmishes that never made it into the annals, this is just one.

The forces of Durin’s folk march to join the muster for the final battle at the gates of Moria, but numerous goblin bands have been unleashed upon the wild to hinder the marshalling.  Near the eves of Mirkwood one detachment of Dwarf warriors is ambushed.  Can the arms and armor of the Dwarfs resist this sudden and fierce onslaught?!?

Enjoy

Love those winter wolves!

Is it just me or is 15mm fantasy gaining in popularity lately?

Hello All,

The family and I have taken to playing D&D under the current lockdown conditions.  I started to paint 15mm figures for the characters & monsters to play with them.

Here are some samples.

Female Archer (Splintered Light Wood Elf Archer)

Elf Wizard (Splintered Light Warriors of Magic)

Halfling Ranger and his bear companions  (Splintered Light)

Don't tell anyone the halfling is really a Werebear, the brown bear is him in full bear shape.

Halfling Female Sorcerer/Thief (Splintered Light)

"Way up north where the air is cold people ain't got no gold, only way to earn a living...

Is clubbing adventurers that wonder too far into the North!

A band of Frost Giants for a future D&D encounter.  They are led my their female war chief with her pet wolves.

The leader is a 28mm Reaper miniature, the guy giants are Splintered Light, and the pets are Wizkids timber wolves.

Enjoy and Thank you

Those figures really make a great set!
I have those splintered lights frost giants to but I've painted mine in a more natural skintone, I kinda regret that decision now  ;)

Stroezie.

All adventurers need monster encounters.  Here are a few I have painted up.

The multi leg variety kind.  a few "Little" ones and their Queen.

The nice thing about this scale is I can use "big" 28mm monsters and make them "Epic" in 15mm

It appears my poor dwarfs keep getting into trouble in the caves or on the fields.

Thanks and enjoy

Hello All,

This next unit is part of my Lord of the Rings project.  I am building around the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.  The Dwarves needed some fire support and these Khurasan bow armed dwarfs are great.   I am using the Khurasan Dwarf line as my King's retinue units.   This will consist of a elite archer unit, a group of huscarls with double handed axes, and  a Dwarf Leidang unit with hand weapons.  All the shields are what I have selected as the King's colors of royal blue (house of Durin?) and gold (Dwarves love Gold!).

These next pictures represent a fun Character in D&D.  A halfling Werebear Ranger.  The addition of a bear warrior figure from Splintered Light allows me to capture all possible stages of the Werebear in miniature form; Normal / Hybrid / Bear.

Every Adventurer needs loot to seek.

The Splintered light treasure set it great to add into your dungeon crawl and the barrels are from Ral Partha Europe.

Our band wanders into the main treasure room.  , but what caused the skeleton to be there?  We will find out.

The good wizard with a very studious apprentice.

Hello all, I hope this note find you well.

I have completed The Dwarf King and Lord.  He will lead his retinue shown above.  These are Khurasan miniatures, a very unique set of Dwarfs.  I found the banner during an online search, so credit to whoever is out there.

Thank you and Enjoy

I acquired a macro lens attachment for my phone.  The picture below is a test shot.  While I do not think taking a picture at this level of detail is the right approach to mini pics, I found the results interesting.  I will share, to allow you to see some extreme detail.  Probably more detail then I want to share of my painting.  :)

I completed this unit representing members of the Dwarf Fyrd.  The miniatures are Splintered Light.

A great set to represent the less heavily armored units of the Dwarf host. Maybe some Warband or Auxiliary for HOTT/DBA

Enjoy and Thanks

Hello,

For the time being, here is the last foot unit for the Dwarf army. A lovely unit of crossbows.  The miniatures are Splintered Light.

I have something very different on the work bench that will round out the army.

Enjoy and Thank you

A demonworld Empire War Wagon with Splintered Light crossbow crew.

With the completion of the war wagon the Dwarf army in this project is complete.  I have many more dwarf minis in the drawers, but those can wait for now.

Enjoy the 101 minis so far and six more armies to go.  "And miles [of minis] to go before I sleep, And miles [of minis] to go before I sleep"

Thanks

I ordered some custom bases from Litko to allow ease of movement and to play DBA style games.

I thought this was pretty cool.

I found a 3D file for stalagmites on Thingverse.  My son scaled them down and printed them on his 3D printer.  I coated them in super glue to minimize the build up rows when painted.  The painting was real  quick and I think I have some great cave scatter terrain.

I hope you enjoy

Thank you

Actually, the print layers make sense in this particular object, being that they are formed by layers of deposits over time. I think they turned out quite nicely. How much did the super glue fill? I hadn't heard of that before, and now I'm wondering if that would be worth trying on printed vehicles or if it would just make a mess of things. Less problematic to make a bit of a mess out of something organic like your stalagmites. Interested to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Hello CookAndrewB,

These objects are very small, approx. 2" in height, and the glue was messy and actually had a lot of fumes.  I recall my eyes burned spreading it all over the shapes.  As you can see it reduced the impact of the print layers, but not completely.

I would not recommend this practice for large vehicles.  I have seen other techniques, like some sort of "acid" bath.

There is a whole world on post print work around 3D models.  The glue method was just one I recall and low tech for me.

Thanks

Hello All,

The Goblin horde, at least all the foot, are complete.  Hurray!  They are ready to throw themselves into the axes of the Dwarfs.

The majority of these minis are Demonworld sculpts with Splintered Light in the back left and right.  The two brands blend very well together.  The center are the cave fighters goblins from DW which are a fun sculpts filled with lots of detail.

I hope you enjoy and thank you

Rats!

Less for the army building and more for D&D and Rangers of Shadow deep.  Whenever you go underground, or into the sewers, you will encounter rats, lots of rats. Big ones too!

Just ask these adventurers.

Hello Mini enthusiasts,

I have two more items done for your enjoyment.

The first batch of a horde of Orcs to come.  These are splintered Light Orc Warriors and they have are very savage and full of character.  A lot more armored then they first appear.  Only 84 more Orc warriors to go.   :'(

To distract me from the orcs I took the time to paint up some medieval/Dark Age buildings.  The Orcs need a place to loot.

These may set up the beginning of a Rangers of Shadow deep solo campaign, we will see.  These come from Magister Militum.  The stone house came from Battle Valor.

Hello All,

Well, well, well what do we have here?

yeah it's literally a well.  A small accessory for my village.  I believe it is from Essex.

A friend was kind enough to supply me some painted Werewolves for D&D.  I decided to paint up a elder pack leader for them; the white werewolf.  The leader model is from Khurasan, not sure where the others are from.

I hate zombies, I really too, but there is not a Dungeon delve or fantasy  scenario that does not require some.  So I painted a small horde.  These are both Splintered light and Khurasan.  I left them very grimy and I did not even add flocking to liven up the colors.  Gross things, blah.

Hello,

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE assembly line painting.   :-[

But, it does produce results.  Two additional units of Orc warriors are completed.  I am regretting that big 40 model bag I purchased years ago.  I did divided the bag into similar sculpts to make it easier with the mass painting.  All the figures are Demonworld.

I hope you like the results.

Hello again,

That s right its more orcs!  You need a lot of these guys, you know.  Here is the 3rd wave of orc warriors.  These are all Demonworld sculpts.  With this complete the Orc/Goblin army is more than 50% complete and yes I have spreadsheets!  One more unit of warriors to go!

To keep me sane while painting the horde I sneaked these Khurasan miniatures Trolls onto the painting table.  They are really enjoyable and are total brutes in size and presence.  They are bigger than Ogres.

As always thank you and I hope you enjoy.

This is the last Orc warrior unit.  This is the core of the army of course; 76 warriors in all.  Hurray!!!!!

These are the last of the Demonworld sculpts.  It came with a nice leader as well.

As always to maintain sanity a few little side projects were completed.

A nice camp scene using Essex minis tents and Bueda camp items.

The Orcs wanted meat back on the menu and to add to the village I also painted pigs.  The other white meat!

Lastly I have a 10mm Pendragon cat that I use as a 15mm familiar.  This is very tiny.

Amazing painted figures!  Wow.  Now you have me itching to try the fantasy genre.

About the stalagmites, for those of us without a 3D printer, is there a seller of printed ones in 15mm?  Does anyone know?

Thanks and keep up the incredible work.

Hello All,

This was very much a random side project.  I got it into my head to make a pig pen for my painted pigs.

Here it is.  The farmer delivering food scraps while a bandit eyes the plunder.

This project did not start off well because the chipboard base totally warped.  I even tried the reverse side PVA glue and water technique.  Initially, it look liked it was going to work, but the end result is below.

My son saved the day as he 3D printed a very thin base that worked out great.  I have always struggled to find thin material for terrain projects that would not warp and this may be an excellent solution.

Enjoy and thanks

Hello all,

Here we are again getting a good sprint of painting done.

First off we have my Orc Commanders.  These are lovely characters from Splintered Light Miniatures.

To escort them into battle we have the brute squad.  Heavy Orc foot also from Splintered light.

Orc armies are often  accompanied into battle by packs of wolves harassing the enemy forces.  Here is one such pack.

I was unsure how to accomplish the natural colors of wolves, being lighter underneath and darker on top.  A "reverse" drybrush method worked and I am pleased.

As always Thank you and enjoy

Hello All,

After a 10 hour sprint of painting I completed the last piece of my fantasy orc army; The wolf riders.  These are Splintered Light miniatures and once again have lots of character.

I very much wanted the grey wolf theme to my units.  This is of course as because my inspiration as a kid was the 1980 animated Hobbit movie.

I am happy to present the entire Orc army for your enjoyment.  You can see the Litko bases in work.  I have more bases on the way.

Thank you and I hope you enjoyed.

Hello All,

I acquired some 15mm terrain from a Esty company called Dungeon Artifacts. This is all 3D printed by the company.  Very good for scatter terrain.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/DungeonArtifacts (https://www.etsy.com/shop/DungeonArtifacts)

I painted them up and liked what I got.  The trees are very durable and took the painting very well.

We see Sir Walter leading a group to explore the ancient overgrown ruins.  What is the worst that can happen?

Wow!  I’m not a big fan of 3D prints, mostly because of the work involved in fixing the deep striations, but those trees look mighty tempting.

A lot of the resin printers tend to have less visible striations compared to the PLA and similar ones

Hello all,

With the orcs done we move on to the first Human army.  The men of Laketown.

I decided to start at the top with the command elements and the elite warriors; just to change things up from time to time.  I do really love this era for miniatures and the general look.  I love the Dark Ages!  I have used the Splintered Light Early Anglo Saxon range as my basis.

First up is the command element of the army.  Here we have Bard, or is it Bain, or maybe even an earlier Warlord when Dale was first founded and the Dwarfs and humans worked together pacify the area around Erabor.  Let your imagination run wild.

I did give the leader a simplistic symbol of a Dragon drowned in a lake on his shield.

Next we have a unit of Elite Warriors.  I imagine these men as the standing city guard.

Lastly we have a standard unit of warriors.  These men are all armed with longswords because you can't have Laketown without longswords.

With cries of “Moria!” and “Dain, Dain!” the dwarves of the Iron Hills plunged in, wielding their mattocks, upon the other side; and beside them came the men of the Lake with long swords.

One really nice thing about fantasy armies is I can make the look more uniform than would be expected in a historical army.  I painted the shields and cloaks with the "colors of Laketown" as suggested by the members of the forum.  I used blue (the Lake) and grey (The mountain) as a common theme throughout the units.  I will continue this theme as more units get done.

As always Thank you and enjoy

Great looking miniatures - the paintjobs are wonderful. I am liking how you are using historicals to make such great Lord of the Rings style armies. They match very well.

What scale are they?

Thank you Odo.

The thread is for the love of 15mm.  So these guys are roughly comparable to 28mm figures in actual size.

Hello all,

Here is a bit of fun.  This 15mm module castle set is also from Dungeons Artifacts on Etsy.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/880055256/winterdale-citadel-walls-modular?ga_search_query=castle&ref=shop_items_search_6&pro=1 (https://www.etsy.com/listing/880055256/winterdale-citadel-walls-modular?ga_search_query=castle&ref=shop_items_search_6&pro=1)

I did a straight forward paint job of priming in black, airbrush basecoat in grey, back wash, and some light grey highlighting.  I was rather please.

This will be a scenario center piece or terrain for D&D encounters.  I do plan on crafting a keep for the center.

These two knights are trying to convince the guards to let them in as they are on a very important quest or a holy artifact.  The guards have just informed them that they already have one and to go away.

That's actually really impressive for a filament print.

Can you see any layer lines at all?

The only place I really notice the layers lines was the door and some of the larger flat surfaces around the gate.  Here is a closer look.

For a "out of the box" Castle that you drop and play I think it serves really well.

Hello All,

I could leave all that open space inside the walls empty now could ?

Over the last few weeks I crafted a keep for my castle. While it will not win any awards upon close inspection, at the end I was rather pleased.

Of course now I need the siege towers and siege weaponry to tackle this fortification.  It appears our two knights managed to fight their way to the top of the tower.

Title: Re: Mountain of 15mm Fantasy (Update 04/04/2021 - D&D Odds and Ends)
Post by: LouieN on April 05, 2021, 12:52:12 AM
Hello All,

Here are a few odds and ends for D&D that have been recently painted.

Our adventuring party is up near Icewind dale.  I wanted a white dragon to throw at them for a random encounter.  This is the White dragon from Splintered light miniatures.

I was still searching for a truly menacing bear mini in 15mm.  I ordered the Copplestone castings cave bears and they are impressive and wonderful sculpts.  They are as big as ogre in size.  I painted this one as a brown bear for our poor character who is cursed as a werebear.  But one more of these will very much act as my Beorn model.  It will be painted up as an impressive black bear.

I needed something for the dwarf cleric to represent his spiritual weapon.  My options in 15mm were very limited as lose weapons in this scale are not common.  I also wondered if it would be too small to handle.  Thoughts of gluing a small 15mm hammer to a base was making my head hurt.

Then, I had this very clever (IMHO) idea.  I would represent the weapon as a actual spiritual warrior wielding a magic weapon.  I grabbed one my my spare dwarfs (I have way too many) with a two handed axe and painted him up as a summoned warrior.  I made the weapon golden to represent the radiant energy.  In its first outing on the roleplay table it beat up quite a few goblins.

"While searching the ruins for a lost dwarven artifact our cleric is ambushed by goblins.  He summons a spirit warrior to even the odds..."

A close up of the pair.  Sing with me "Me an my buddddyyy..."

I might have gotten the idea from my recent viewing of Big trouble in Little China, when the wizards duel with animated warriors.

Post by: LouieN on May 30, 2021, 05:28:20 AM
Hello All,

The first unit of spearmen from Laketown are complete.  These are Splintered Light miniatures from their Dark Age Saxon line.  While the sculpts are lovely, the spears are very bendy and soft.  I foresee lots of adjustment in the future.

Equipped with mail shirts, these are the more heavily armored of the town call out.  I will either keep them as a separate unit or they will act as the front line of the other spear units.

The last portion of the army of Laketown is complete.  Hurray!

Several archers stands have been added to the force.  These are splintered light miniatures from their Robin hood and Late Anglo-Saxon lines.

They were a joy to paint. Please enjoy.

Here is the full army.   3 units of spears, armored warriors up front and levy in back, 2 units of warriors with long swords of course, archer units, and Bard with his small retinue.

I do hear the cry of my OCD to paint up two more figures just to fill in the stand.  But the six figures is an elite unit in Dragon Rampant.  I’m good right….he he

I'm coming to this thread really late, but I have used two approaches. Our local Home Depot sells thin-ish plywood in smaller sheets. I can't remember the size. It's maybe 2'x3'? Hold up well. Downside is that lumber prices are through the roof--a few months ago I looked at getting some more sheets and got sticker shock.  :o

Another good alternative is artist canvas boards. They come in many different sizes and are not very expensive. I paint them with gesso first, which they are designed to take, and then decorate and attach buildings. The local art supply store carries them. I'm not sure if Hobby Lobby does.

Just a couple possibilities.

I'm slowly getting back into real miniature painting. I love this thread!

Thank you for the kind replies.  It is appreciated.

Skipper,

The bases I am using are also LITKO as well.  It is a 0.75 inch diameter and 1.5mm deep circular base. It is one of their standard offerings and I brought them by the hundreds.

While I plan to use my figures for Dragon Rampant, to allow my individual based figures to be used in DBA style games I custom ordered bases to hold them.  Working with Litko they designed a 3.5" x 1.5" bases with 4 slots for infantry and 3 for Cavalry.  I intended to base by Cavalry (once painted) on 1" circular bases.

Please let me know if you need more info

CPBelt,

Here was the solution for me on that project.  My son printed a base from his 3D filament printer.  The plastic was study and did the job.

Take Care

Now I can’t wait to see how you build Laketown.  :)
Dan

An empty lake with lots of stumps sticking out the water.  It is post dragon attack.   ;)

Don't forget the blue cloth for the lake surface.  Bonus points if you can paint it so it looks like there's a crashed Smaug beneath the surface.  :)

Or for a later War of the Ring version, I suppose it would be his skeleton.  The books went out of their way to say no one dared to disturb his body for all the gems it was encrusted with, so the bones should be pretty intact.  The new Laketown was built on the shore quite a ways away - superstitious dread, or the negative environmental impact of a rotting dragon corpes, you decide.  Could still have a battle or series of skirmishes near the old ruins, maybe with the remains of the temporary shelters on the shore part of the table.

Hmmm...maybe a scenario where some of Mordor's minions are trying to recover Smaug's bones for some nefarious purpose, and/or the jewels from the muck beneath them?  The good guys have to stop them or Something Bad happens.  In D&D that'd end up with the Baddies trying to raise a dracolich or zombie dragon, but that's not Tolkein's style at all.

Speaking of the effects of having a rotting dragon in your drinking water and fishing reserve, I imagine you'd start to see some funny kids a generation in or so.  In D&D terms, you want dragonborn, that's how you get dragonborn.  None of this noble magical hatch out of an egg thing, just slow mutation and corruption like less-fishy Deep Ones without the piscine intercourse thing.  But that's not Tolkein either.  :)

A friend gave me a lovely 15mm tower.  I just had to paint it up.  The maker is unknown to me.  It is one big solid piece of resin.

Enjoy

Hello all,

You can be forgiven thinking I had forgotten my LOTR project.  But no, I have returned!  I was simply distracted by a mass of mechs and a tip into AWI.

Here we have the start of the Woodland Realm forces.  The elves of Mirkwood.  These miniatures are Mirliton from their 15mm fantasy line.  The castings are excellent.

The first spear unit.

I have a very large group of archers ready to be primed behind them.

Thank you and enjoy

Excellent figures and most excellent paintjob.
Such a shame that Mirliton has those excessive shipping costs, really discourages from ordering something from them even though Italy isn't that far from Spain.

Hello all,

15mm paints so much faster than 28mm.  I present three glorious units of Elven archers.  A huge milestone because this is half of the army done.  3 more unit to go!

These are once again Mirliton miniatures.

Please enjoy

The whole group.

These are D&D great eagles miniatures recruited for the cause of light.  Their size fits my image of a great eagles.   This was my first use of the GW contrast paints.  I was impressed with the brown, but less with the gray.  I can see why they are good.  They made the initial base painting very fast.

The Battle of the five armies is ready to play!  A two-year project is now truly complete.  Huzzah!

We completed the terrain over the weekend in a mad burst to be ready for the game.  I could have not done it without the kids (slave labor) and a good friend (bribed Labor).  I really appreciated their help.

I wanted a nontraditional flat grey for the mountain ridges.  I am very pleased with how the colors came out.

Finally, I was able to deploy the horde of minis for tomorrow's battle

Please enjoy

Congratulations! I saw your final set-up and I instantly wanted to play the game. That looks like it's going to be a total blast. Do let us know how the it goes down.

The first wargame I ever made (when I was a wee young hob) was the Battle of Five Armies, with the arms of the mountain and the river drawn out on gridded paper (nicked from school) and with little cardboard counters for the units. So seeing your 'proper' wargame version makes me very happy indeed.

Thank truly you for your encouraging words.  There were 352 figures on the table.

The game itself was a resounding victory by the forces of light.  Rightly so!

We even recycled a 4th Orc/wolf army after one was lost.  I have to work on some balance issues to make it more of a nail biter.

Take care

That is a spectacular set up and collection of figures! The Battle of Five Armies (along with Helm’s Deep) grabbed me when I read them as a child, and probably are part of my lifelong interest in fantasy gaming. Seeing a beautiful game based on those battles is a treat!

Glad you had fun. I wonder, did you include the goblins attacking from the rear in your game?

Victory seemed at hand, when a cry rang out on the heights above.
Goblins had scaled the Mountain from the other side and already many were on the slopes above the Gate, and others were streaming down recklessly, heedless of those that fell screaming from cliff and precipice, to attack the spurs from above... Victory now vanished from hope. They had only stemmed the first onslaught of the black tide.

Apologies if you'd already thought of this, but I wonder if another orc army turning up behind the defenders on a roll of x would even things out? Obviously, then the defenders could roll for the eagles and Beorn to arrive in subsequent turns.

We did!  The Elf lord discovered placing a unit of archers away from the entry point was a great balancer.  The board was big enough they had one turn of shooting.  We concluded a random entry area would be required.  We even had the units roll for "splat" to see how many goblins fell to their depths in the climb.  "Anything but a 1 boys!"

The Elven archers earned their pay this day.  They were like machine guns.

We used Lion Rampant for the rules.

Hello All,

I made two "cap" pieces for my Lonely Mountain terrain set.  This is to make the boards more usable for other scenarios.  The gap can be a mountain pass or have a river running through it.  A simple but effective way to get more bang from the pieces.

Enjoy and thank you

Hello All,

We will continue our wonderings in Middle Earth.  We move south from Erebor into the plains of Rohan.  This is the first unit of Eorlings to arrive at the muster.  There will be more to come as the beacon towers are lit and the red arrow has been presented.

This unit is unique, it is the first horse miniatures I have ever paint.  This is despite being in the hobby for decades.  I was always scared to paint them, but an army of Rohan requires it.

These are Old Glory 15mms from the Dark Age Ottonian line.  The Norman knight look with round shields fits perfectly for Rohan.  The even have cloaks.  The sculpts aren't perfect, but work well.

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

best speech ever!  :)

The Muster of Rohan is complete, and they ride to save Gondor.  The miniatures are mostly Old Glory.  Theoden on Snowmane is a Bueda figure.  The mounted archers are fighting15s.  A suggestion from this site.

Please enjoy and thank you

The full army.  1 Elite Cavalry, 3 Heavy Cavalry, 2 Light cavalry for Lion Rampant.

"Grey as a mouse, Big as a house, ...."

I am very happy with the first installment of the Haradrim army. We had to start big or go home.

I present two Mûmakils for your enjoyment.  These are Aventine 28mm West African elephants to the capture the proper scale of the Oliphant's.  I did not go Peter Jackson big!

I scratch built the Howdahs from card stock and foam.  They are held on via magnets for ease of storage.  These are rather tall.  I had an engineering disaster with these.  I built them to be narrow side forward.  Once I placed the riders/handlers on I discovered I had made them too long.  Luckly, because of the magnets, the family suggested turning them 90 degrees and they looked great.  I was so happy I did not have to repeat all that work.

The riders are Old Glory Dark Age Russ/Slavs.  They had their poor legs thoroughly spread apart to fit on the Oliphants.  The archer crews are Legio Heroica Syrians.  All with their stylish red turbans and black arm bands to show loyalty to Mordor.  They are excellent figures.

I agree with DivisMal, your oliphants (oliphantry?) are spot on scale wise. Your Pelennor Fields games are going to look epic.
Those Fighting15s Late Roman archers also work really well as Rohan light cav. Thoroughly enjoying this project. There's something very old school about marshalling historical minis into fantasy armies.

"Southward beyond the road lay the main force of the Haradrim, and there their horsemen were gathered about the standard of their chieftain. And he looked out, and in the growing light he saw the banner of the king, and that it was far ahead of the battle with few men about it. Then he was filled with a red wrath and shouted aloud, and displaying his standard, black serpent upon scarlet, he came against the white horse and the green with great press of men; and the drawing of the scimitars of the Southrons was like
a glitter of stars."

Hello All,

The command unit of my Haradrim army is complete.  These are Legio Heroica crusader era figures.  The figures are wonderful, simply wonderful.  I was really sad to glue the kite shields onto the soldiers covering up all the nice armor detail.

The unit showcases my plan for the army, using red highlights and yellow/sand for the shields.

I was very pleased.  Please enjoy and thank you

One more Haradrim cavalry unit is complete, hurray!

I used the Bedouin figures from Legio Heroica to represent a unit of Light cavalry.  Once again, the figures are wonderful.

I am really enjoying how the red/yellow/black theme is working through the units.  A fantasy army that still feels linked to the real world.  One more unit to mounted Haradrim to go.

Please enjoy and thanks

This is a heavy cavalry unit to charge into the ranks of Rohan.   I now move onto the foot units of the army.

Hello All,

We all know the great cycle of miniature life.

1. Buy the Minis
2. Paint the Minis
3. Play with the Minis

With that in mind, we got to play a Lion Rampant game of Rohan vs Haradrim.  This was an all cavalry, and Oliphant, battle.

Here we have the two forces facing off across the great plain plains (pun intended) of Pelennor.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1PCmDsChT0nRnTvaKpcH6pQ0OpYQAavIOB8d0u2FGjxibcQdEihAwLVfRxtEg5VuT-ee6nUOacSYW36i3JX3Ev-ZjrrEtS5pY6qtF22WwXDVrbJcRH6J7Is7FP17Gz2Xaz6A9nvKBPf_cgPJo3czE6HSlJgHT9kmnk5JDumjZJboyblt9DDZEB2AU/s1178/Rohan%20vs%20Haradrim-2023-03-11%20(1).jpg)

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGR6UGRC48pfKXg7LHHVlFREFjXZs0Uu4LLuBUsoPZfIoUUS4ute0PYOvq4SMkMiGiLUTTOPdysuR8lpAd0zybl6MBCgQBLey6GycanlmIV5K50v_M1u5rQM58XCokve6IqhhWiopWJHfvezAiNs44ja7IYbyYYshPndl0Uei_N-PNA2DuiMitQX-2/s1383/Rohan%20vs%20Haradrim-2023-03-11%20(2).jpg)

The fight saw heroic deeds by the King of Rohan.  He and his bodyguard routed an Oliphant then nearly wiped out the Haradrim king's elite unit.  Through multiple rounds of bloody combat both retinue were down to a few men.  There was even a duel between the great kings.  Which ended in a tie and was very disappointing from the cinematic POV.  The director was not pleased.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF04MAT1N_CatqvXF_8a6AUSYmGOj5IY7yphONgdB_iyX4g1a8nJuSU80eH1NlQHUS9xFWoWiwbd9icR9Mf0wdNaFMD1LERVl768jlZlQ0nkdWV0r1zE-sExCFYiOhNfPhSe72klPwkh8Dr5h9J4Nh1XDlT7FOMbfiuv2Bu1TeycRMaXDT4x3XXgUw/s1411/Rohan%20vs%20Haradrim-2023-03-11%20(3).jpg)

But the charge of the Rohan king had left him isolated from the main army.  An army that seemed befuddled at times, as if under an evil spell.  Maybe a dark sorcerer was influencing the dice in the most despicable way.

The king was isolated and alone with no white wizard coming to help this time.  Victory for the Haradrim.

The game was heavily influenced by the abysmal activation rolls of the Rohan army.  50% of the army never saw combat.  Thier king was too deep in enemy lines to influence them.  A great game was had and I thank all the players for taking part.  It is always great to see all the work come together on the board.

I hope you enjoy

Thank you for your kind words.

We used the current Lion Rampant rules, but I did import the greater warbeast stats for the Oliphants.  They felt more right.

Thanks for sharing this project! I went through from the beginning and had a great time seeing it come together. Fantastic collection. Good choices for middle earth. Love the Rohirrim and Haradrim and those Guthrie elves are second to none in 15mm, I would be all over them if I did 15mm.

Hello All,

One thing for sure the foot units go much faster than the horse unit.

I present for your enjoyment two units of Haradrim spearmen.  I really love the style of these unit.  The front ranks are mailed warriors with each rank behind being less armored.  I selected the scorpion as their symbol to keep with the venom-dessert theme.  Legio herorica figures again, as mentioned before they are awesome.

Thank you as always

The bases are Litko .75" x 1.5mm thick circular bases.  1" for the cavalry.  I buy them in bulk.   :)

The base is a Flock mix created years go.  It is a woodland scenics mix, Blended turf, with a bag of tiny pebbles tossed into the mix.

It is simply a White glue and tip into the flock for the soldiers.

I created the mix so long ago I have no idea where I got the tiny rocks.

Hope that helps

No problem.  Those are custom designed and ordered Litko trays as well.  I sent them specs.   They are wooden trays about 3.1" long, 1" wide, and 3mm deep.  They are painted and flocked by me.

I got them planning on using the figures in DBX style games.  Where the tyranny of the base width in enforced.

But I have fallen for the Lion/Dragon rampant series where you can do what you want.

They do make moving groups much easier.

Hello All,

So close to being done with one more LOTR army!  I need more coffee and more painting energy.

I present to you the archers for the Haradrim army.  These are Legio Herorica minis again.  I do have report 2 of the archers with bows cast into the weapons had miscast.  I removed them and as you can see hard to tell them part.  Other than that they are nice and crisp.

as always thank you and enjoy

The Haradrim march to war!

The final foot units are done and the entire planned army is competed.  Hurrrah! Hurrah!

First, we have the new foot units.  below are elite swordsman that are good for blades in DBA or Elite foot in Lion Rampant.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbv5vO2gxM4aehrFjB0HYUx-sRZK-RPHTj-THloVK_wmWIiB8ELfx0apeCjAml-OKhTFAdJkNnyOLSme1BwZf6N0iAuRCKyoaoekN5fhhp8WCdFMuQVCZIOx1D5p_SLnDksKeOD_1vZYKvOp5kTqg_rA00VaTUVQZRsMDPpNKb2McCsFWxHcMM-k-B/s1181/Haradrim%20Foot%20(1).jpg)

The next unit is a light armored unit.  They can represent a warband/skirmisher type unit.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC60KwXa7x14cyHofT-ViN-HwAhxnWiYUmcXbGg8MnhPxFWKgmyfhprmbCEj9GohH0tWQ8OedjnKPlb8QX0VTcBvd_jDFjczeTzzrqc7EUu_HtvuOmXvMOClOVpat5H1HqBaPVw8Gm62GvVVm-mgyZ0_19MjHeVZ31QujalFR-Dwh8sR4Jc1qva841/s1094/Haradrim%20Foot%20(2).jpg)

That leads to the GRAND REVEAL...da da dum

2 Oliphants, 3 cavalry units, and 6 foot units make up the grand host of the South.  To Gondor!

I had to take one front on shot.

This whole army fits in 4 trays for storage.  Not bad at all.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgM5tjN1DMU-WehNfp9zco399p7d0Pmc927IJlev5Sm3Era-yZiR9NcWT9uCdI8J5dCdX5u4vjA6LmZTeRdkT12sddZqZ1crAzB5zHNio0LDdBBBu9jgm2rN15pefpNV1dXDCk0SzuacDql9x6CvSRoF2Rwvwm-gaqGZaJo_2TsK-Jz1pTPh35ejHA/s1024/Haradrim%20Army%20(3).jpg)

For those that conclude my painting days are done; that is far from reality.  You see the host of Gondor is finally on deck.  Gondor by far us my favorite land in LOTR.  The Empire at the end and the bulwark of the West.

As always I hope you enjoyed and Thank you

Hello,

This is the beginning of the host of Gondor.  I wanted forces from the Southern fiefs.  Those provinces constantly skirmishing with the Haradrim.  A large part of my army will represent Dol Amroth, as such we just had to start with the Knights.

"And last and proudest, Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, kinsman of the Lord, with gilded banners bearing his token of the Ship and the Silver Swan, and a company of knights in full harness riding grey horses; and behind them seven hundreds of men at arms, tall as lords, grey-eyed, dark-haired, singing as they came."

In my selection of minis we have "advanced" a little in time using 1st crusade-3rd crusade miniatures to represent Gondor.  The look is sill locked squarely in the early medieval era.  No plate!  The miniatures are Legio Herorica.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhosoXP_qfWWhQnlc7YmVtrfJvr25EueNchDIWE4sYIwT7tbsLWfU-tGxX6xXqCmY3uXomA9R962HUFpTRBogbHjRYbsLQsY-STtENUr2cA3Ku8f61V1l8NQnI2a9aPlI2sRq-cYGxPCMxbVMfhuAG_kx2ORzQQfQVqMsCfRdj-0LJEYfg_u1kqyCNb/s1062/Gondor%20-%20Dol%20Amroth%20Knights%20(1).jpg)

I was very much inspired by this artwork.  Does anyone know the artist?

Now the shields are very plain and right now I am happy with them.   A few free hand attempts at ships quickly made me realize "less is more".  But if anyone knows a location to acquire 15mm Swan ships decals for shields let me know.

Enjoy and thank you

PS - I have one more unit in this style, mailed knights in surcoats.  It is the command unit with banner.  My original idea was to paint one unit in black surcoats, Knight of Minas Tirith, and one in blue, Dol Amoth.  I have enjoyed the blue so much I am thinking making both Dol Amroth, with a nice Swan banner.

Opinions?

Lovely work as always Louie. The Haradrim came out really well and I'm looking forward to seeing your Gondor force come together. I really like that blue on the swan knights and I don't blame you at all on deciding that free hand swan-boat shields at 15mm may not be the way to go! The only 15mm 'swan' shield transfers I've seen are from Veni Vidi Vici, but they'd still need a bit of overpainting to get that Dol Amroth look. It might at least give you a fighting chance, though.

BTW the painting is Imrahil by Anke-Katrin Eißmann.

Hello All,

I am pleased to report the 2nd unit of Dol Amroth Knights is complete.  An excellent start for the army of Gondor.  A core of Elite Cavalry to spearhead any attacks.

You may rejoice that there is an equally large force of Heavy Knights on the painting table right behind these.  No surcoats just raw mail.

Please enjoy and thank you for reading

Hello All,

Have I mentioned how quick miniatures covered in mail are to paint.  Thank goodness.

Quickly sallying out to join the charge of Rohan; the Knights of Gondor ride out lead by their captain.

The miniatures are Legio Heroica while the captain is one of the newer Khurasan 1000 AD line commanders.

Please enjoy

For the record, I really did try to paint the tree of Gondor on the shields.  The results did not "wow" me.  While the wife loved it, I deemed the results looked like a cactus instead of the tree.  This lead me to calling them the Cactus Cav Corp.

I painted over the symbols and kept the simple black look for the shields. The picture below is proof of my attempt and a way to remember the Cactus Cav Corp.

Hello All,

I have completed my unit of Gondorian Rangers.  They will act as an elite infantry formation for my games.  The miniatures are Rangers from the Demonworld line.  While they are more "Robin Hood" than my desired Dark age theme they checked many boxes.  They have cloaks, bows, armor, and are Human.  The miniatures are very good.

Please enjoy and thank you

Hello All,

The paint factory grinds on.  The Gondor army is now 41% done.  You know I have spreadsheets!

I always loved the look of a elite dark age infantry force; dismounted Knights, Varangian Guard, Anglo-Saxon huscarls.  With that love I just had to include such a unit into my Gondor force.

In my mind they represent mercenaries from other lands such as Rohan, Rhovanion, and Arnor.  You know there is not much work around the Shire for hired soldiers (well not before Sharkey arrived) and the Rangers of the North have a high recruiting standard.  They form a unique defensive unit called the Gate keepers.  While the Citadel Guard get all the plush assignments these guys crush Orcs skulls in when they swarm the first walls.

These models are from Legio Heroica from their Anglo-Saxon line.

Please enjoy and Thank you

These are Old glory models and they really go great with the theme of the army.

These are great Louie. You've done a really tidy job on them. All that leather edging on the mail... good work.

I've looked at old Glory Dark Ages stuff before, but was unsure of how they would scale with other 15mm stuff. Are they true 15s or are they big 15s/18mm? Thank you.

Thank you very much Old Hob

Yes all that edging drove me nuts.  But I am happy with the outcome.

Old glory is a good standard 15mm miniature line.  They are not small.  They blend well with Splintered Light and Essex.

They are not Epic scale or 18mm

Hello All,

While I might have been sucked into a warp tunnel and sent into the future to paint marines and bugs I will never forgot Middle Earth.

The last regiments of Gondor are marshaling, these are the vast units of spearmen.  The bastions that allow the archers and knights to operate against the dark hordes.

The following unit is one the veteran foot units from Dol Amroth.  While the Knights received the bulk of the songs and glory, with good reason,  these stalwart soldiers marched into the White city with the Price and held the gate along with the Knights.  They proudly wear the blue surcoat of the fief.  Which I promptly covered in huge kite shields.  ;)

Please enjoy and thank you

That's right MORE spearmen.  Let's face it in a Dark Age/Medieval army this is the core of any army.

The City Guard of Minas Tirith do not that have the same reputation as the Citadel guard.  Those guys have silver on their surcoats.  They are still one of the veteran defenders of the city.  These battalions charged out the broken gate when they saw the banner of the King flowing on the Anduin.  Following Prince Imrahil against the besieging Orc host.

The figures are Legio Herorica from the crusader range.  Maybe one day they will return.  Only 24 figures left for Gondor to be completed.  Almost there!

Please enjoy and thank you

Hello All,

The LOTR project started 4 years ago and now the last army on that list is done.  Number seven, Gondor, is done!

I completed the last two units of spearmen representing men that mustered with Aragorn in the South; once the Army of dead had cleared out the Corsairs.  They are the last of my Legio Heroica figures from their crusader line.  May they return one day.

In total 143 figures: Elite Cavalry (12), Heavy Cavalry (13), Light Cavalry (6), Rangers (12), Elite Foot (16), Heavy Foot (48), Archers (36)

Hello All,

Here is a shot of some companions that just got off the boat and charging in a horde of Orcs!

I wanted a cool command unit for my Southern Gondor reinforcements.  In my reading I am convinced that Aragon and Legolas would be in mail shirts at the battle of Pelennor fields.  Still, I searched through my fantasy collection to find 3 suitable figures that easily stood out to represent the three classic hero's; Aragon, Legolas, and Gimli.  I was happy with these selections to lead the charge. They are each unique and I even found a Elven figure with twin blades.

These come from splintered Light ranges.
