Title: SPACE 1889
Post by: VonAkers on July 09, 2020, 02:05:24 PM
Hi Guys
Been working on a Project for a while now..
Not doing the Space 1889 thing , rather Space 1881 ...let me explain.
For those of you that dont know Space 1889 follows  a Fantasy Sci Fi Steam Punk scenario where Humans ( British First ) start to Colonise Mars , and they start to set up a Colony set up  that looks very similar to India .

I dont mind the old "India on Mars theme" , I just think perhaps a bit earlier holds a bit more interest .
More a  European Scramble for Mars , rather than"oh the Brits Colonised over there already as well have they ? bad luck for us .

Figures to use .

The British and Colonial European Troops are very easy , any Victorian types/ Late 19th c troops will fit in sorted ..

The Martians .., well the Martians were a bit of an issue.
There is an "Official" Range from RAFM , however they are a much older range ,there are some gems in there , and some very poor figures as well , ( there must of been several sculpters at work ) I deceided  to usea few of those , but not many .
However the Gashants ( Martain Cavalry Mounts ) are quite ok , and no one else does those , so will use them .
Now i have seen people convert figures ( using Grenadier Elves ) , and even use GW kroot for High Martians  ( as they are a bit different and barbaric )

However I ended up going for The Superb  Bronze Age Miniatures range .
Now these were more HG Wells "Barsoom Martians ", but the figures are all superb Perry Esk sculpts and so  they were the only Real way to go
Also David from  Bronze Age was very kind and help full  and great  to deal with , and even sourced some OOP earlier models for me ..Thanks Guys !!
So a large order was placed ( after  Refinancing the house ) lol

Artillery
I picked up specific guns all from Patrick at TVAG , and his help and service was First Rate , I highly recommend him and TVAG ( a veritable treasure trove of goodies over there )
Gunners are converted Bronze Age Miniatures .

Cavalry
As discussed I shall be using the RAFM Gashants , with some Martian riders and dropping various Eurpean riders on to some spare mounts .

That is it for now some pics to follow,I shall have them back from Macs Painting Service shortly , and shall post pics , if I can figure out How.
Cheers

.

This thread demands Pics!

I agree that a "scramble for Mars" would be a much more fun background than the Mars has all ready been colonized trope.

there are a few other Martian types around.

Oshiro have Japanese on Mars to fit in with the Martians from Red Planet:
https://redplanetminiatures.blogspot.com/

or Northstar have some Martians, but currently not on their website (running at limited capacity whilst short-staffed during Covid)

Ironclad have cephalopods and Sanwar, also Selenites and Martians (including mounted):

Also looking forward to seeing the photos!  I've been a fan of the setting ever since GDW published it back in the '80s.

One quibble, Barsoom is the creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs, not HG Wells  :D

For Wells' Martians, you'd need tripods ;)  (and if you are looking for a tripod model, Peter Dennis' Little Wars has a paper one you can build...)

Best wishes, and I'll be looking for the photos as they come!

Also interested to see what you come up with.  :)

My own Space 1889 planning remains mainly rooted in the original setting, and cherry-picking some of the new aspects from the recent re-printing of Space 1889 by Clockwork Publishing. It's mainly to use 'The Men Who Would Be Kings' rules from Osprey too.

Keen to see how you progress with this.

So VonAkers has dragged me not very kicking or screaming into this project...

Actually I've been wanting to do something similar for years so am kicking off a French force to oppose his Britishers and Pruessens.  Thought I may as well just add to his thread as we do madness this together.

My Army's theme is in an Armee d'Afrique style so I'll open with some client state canal martians as Tirailleurs Martiens, furnished with modern rifles and a European “Adviser” officer. They are based in the Canal city of Ideus Fons, the French seat of power on Mars.
The Canal Martians are from the RAFM Space 1889 line, while the French Officer is an Artizan figure. The 12 figure unit is sized for Osprey's The Men Who Would Be Kings rules.  I'll mass base them when I have another unit or two completed.

To come: Legion Etrangere, Zouaves, Spahis and Chasseur d'Mars (on gashants naturally)

Hi there Iceaxe, Vonakers and I spent quite a bit of time online trying to find the right mat for Mars gaming.
Then he found a bolt of this cloth at a material shop - looks really good over a big table .

Thanks. I only ask as I'm in Melbourne & was hoping you would say, "It's Peach Moon at Spotlight", or something similar, so I didn't have to go searching.

Pretty sure it was indeed a Spotlight purchase!

Ice Axe
Mate we looked at every Mat option.None worked.
Either The Colour, the size or the price was wrong .
In addition my table is 15 x 6 and 3 sides of it have a "back table" öf 2ft around .
So thats a square footage in excess of 150 square feet out  ...
Any way .. one word for you my man ...SPOTLIGHT ...!!
For those of you not from down under that is a homewares /fabric store in Aust ... I have a card lol .. like a dear old spinster ..lol
( thus I get a heads up when specials are on )
They have heaps of suitable products for a war gamer .
The cloth in question was on their run out /discounted rack and after scrummaging through such I found 2 contenders .
I then contacted Tas who was aware and overseeing of the operation , and we compared photos onsite and an executive decision was made , operation successfull.
However I had no idea that the Mat was almost the perfect Colour ..!!
In fact the less is more principle applies here as well , a complex detailed mat would be sensory overload..t
However for $ 65 in was 5 or 6% of the cost of the  alternatives .
Happy days indeed , and it is sort of nice to make your own rather than pay through the neck for it ..
I have spelt quite a ridiculous amount of money on this project , so  much that even in my universe i was shaking my head a bit .
Wait till you see the finished product .
We are having a Grand Battle of Space 1889 on December 5th ( No CV here)
It will be a aprox 60 Point Game using The Men Who Would Be King rules. 3 players per side .. should look pretty good.
Cheers

Battle was at last joined this week, on the plains of Xanthe where the French were embarked upon a  punitive expedition against marauding Hill Martian tribes.  The raiders banded together to assualt the French encampment at dawn...

And so the victorious French returned to their base at Ideaus Fons having consolidated their grip on the Xanthe Chryse region, and planned their next expedition to expand their sphere of influence on Mars.

What did you do with the Tharks stat-wise/unit wise?

Thanks all!

What did you do with the Tharks stat-wise/unit wise?

We are using them as Tribal Cavalry in units of 5 figs, each with 2 wounds.
They are fierce (Fight of 4+ instead of 5) and Savage (+1 to hit when attacking)
They are fast, brutal and tough to take down - so they feel about right (ie Scary as heck!)

France needs Liftwood!

Being a most entertaining battle on Mars, hosted by VonAkers today: 6 players at 40-50 points per player, pitting Britain against France and her Martian allies to secure vital shipments of Liftwood.

The calm before the storm on the 15 foot table looked thus:

Amazing stuff.

How did you work the Aphid into the rules?    We were using Gaslight rules but this set seems so much simpler to get to the table.

Hi Guys
 Thanks for the kind comments
The Aphid is from our friend at Oshiro Terrain , and very nice it is too .
In Regards the Aphid , we Parked it off table ( on my back boards )you could also place it on table  at a far edge , and used it as Fire Support ,ie it shoots once a turn with its Short 4 Inch  gun , and we used the Warhammer Artillery scatter dice to see where its "support fire "landed  .. worked well.
We used the Bronze Age Miniatures Tharks .. well cause they look cool and the allies needed more troops..lol
Stand by for another post Shortly on more Space 1889 ...your gonna love it ..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers

I was wondering who made the Tharks, so thanks for mentioning it… they look brilliant!

Have Bronze Age Miniatures taken down their webpage?

Sorry Doug, he does not.
He scratches them out of foamcore and card, then paints over the top

Really inspirational stuff here, so inspirational it made me revive my old VSF thread and to update my VSF blog! Also I have now downloaded the paper Sky Galleons of Mars ships, thanks, I am sure they will be fun to build.... ::)
Nice to see the Bronze age figures, I have been sorely tempted by the humans in that range (already have some of the creatures)
Must be nice to have some VSF gamers near enough to you to game with.

    Menelduir , and Gang.

I am preparing my Siege game for Space 1889.
Got the walls sorted , and have some very nice TM Terrain Buildings to go with them..
However I am after a bit of Ďnspiration , on how to customise said buildings to give them a "Martian "feel.
    Any ideas ??
Let me know when you have a moment.
    Cheers

Off the top of my head and not knowing the look of the buildings I would suggest

1) Mars coloured ground terrain around the building, Martian plants, vines climbing up the buildings
2) Add-ons, shrines, coral with Gashants, odd shaped wall decorations, odd shaped architectural add-ons
3) Strange markings on the walls, I see circular shapes, spirals, odd looking letters
4) Netting to protect against flying blue High Martians ;)
5) Humans go home signs...either in Earth language or Martian

I really like your blog, great to see a new post. It's been inspirational to me in my own VSF efforts. Especially the Tharks!

I am still hunting for the "perfect" ruleset (a quest that will never end I fear)... I still prefer Soldier's Companion to anything else I've tried, including MWWBK.

Redshank
Mate we played with MWWBK last Game
Trying to keep to the SPACE 1889 theme.
The French were Regulars , the French Askaris had inferior rifles

So we ran the Canal Martians in companies, and as Irregulars ., the French were Regulars , the French Askaris had inferior rifles .
Each company had 2 half companies of shooters (12 figs) and Cutters( 12 figs)
The shooters were downgraded to Antiquated Muskets , but boosted by better morale , total 4 Points .
The cutters were downgraded to only hand weapons , but had there morale pumped up  Total 3 points
We also added 3 shield gunners to several units , they had an improvised rule that casualties come off them first  ( 2 cas per fig ) and only 2 hits kill , the incomplete hit is discarded., this makes them a fair bit tuffer and able to take more punishment at range  ) plus another point per group of 3 .
This worked ok , but made the cutters a bit slow, because they had to test to move ...
One of the other guys suggested using them as Tribals .. i was not so sure yet ..maybe.

Lastly and most importantly we used a different activation system that worked a treat .
Ie a Bolt action like ,chit per unit in a bag , and draw blind , ( obviously the unit must still pass a activation test if appliacable .. worked great !!
Huzzah !!!! lol lol

You're making me think again about MWWBK! I think the game would really benefit from more random unit activation, creating a more dynamic situation for the players to deal with. I found games started to feel a bit samey quite quickly. Although that was also probably because we had limited playing space and not enough familiarity with the rules to place terrain well, which is important to stop the Europeans blasting the natives off the board...

Anyway your exploits continue to inspire and entertain, well done sir!

Hmm.  Just stumbled upon this thread.  Scramble for Africa is ripe for alternative gaming.  Deep into creating my own but set on earth, just 'rearranging' history and tossing in a very large dose of creative licensing.  There is a connective tissue to what is here, I am using some "Martians" as one of my 'created tribes' but since I am working in 15 mm they shouldn't stand out as 'too weird' for my intentions - slightly weird perhaps but that fits.  The figures I am using are the old Black Hat range - and some other figures meant for natives in the region of Central America.  And, like yours, I am bringing in more nations - mostly ones that were already in Africa but also tossing in the United States.  Creative license is fun.
