Title: Coal Wars/Battle of Blair Mountain miniatures?
Post by: Atheling on July 10, 2020, 01:50:32 PM
So, I'm completely new to this but thought it would make a striking (pun intended) game in 28mm.

Can anyone point me to any literature covering the conflict please?

And visual source material?

Hmm, great minds think alike! This was a project I started a while ago, using various odd n sods  from various ranges before becoming diverted by other shiny things.

The Wikipedia entries on the West Virginia Coal Wars has a good bibliography and there’s a good Online article from some American gun nut magazine On the weaponry used on both sides which even includes some battlefield analysis of the rounds discovered in situ. Lots of Springfield trapdoors, Winchesters and Vetterlis and evidence of surprising quantities of automatic weapons in the hands of the company stooges.

Suitable figures can be found in the Eureka Soviet partisans, Perry Mafeking Defenders and various Pulp and Brigade Games ranges.

Miniature Wargames issues 47-48 cover the Colorado Coalfield War. I have part two and it does discuss wargaming the war.
If you want to contact me I could write up what the author has to say about gaming it. Also, George McGovern, former Senator
from South Dakota wrote the only book on it that I know of, The Great Coalfield War, 1972.

You might try searching the "Matewan Massacre" and you could try looking up the movie "Matewan".

If you go over to TMP (The Miniature Page) click on message boards and then enter Battle of Blair Mountain there are a number of responses to someone doing the battle. Some good information for you. The MW article I mentioned above, although not on West Virginia, still has good information about how miners dressed, weapons and figures for a mine war game.
