Title: (None Adhesive) Cork Tile Supplier in the UK?
Post by: Atheling on July 14, 2020, 05:35:33 PM
Hi,

Before I refer to the title, what do those in the know feel is the best thickness of tile for making 28mm scale (1:56) buildings? I'm socially shielding for health reasons so would need an online UK supplier if possible.

I don't know if my screwed up my google foo is all off kilter st present but I've been trying to find a manufacturer of cork tiles for making such buildings and had very little luck- if any really. I just keep finding tiles that have an adhesive backing :(

Can anyone help please? :)

I used to get mine in Wickes, before they pulled out of Ireland that is. They were a nice thickness, no adhesive and cheap.

They may well have stopped selling them(?) as I'm not getting any results for Cork Floor Tiles on the Wickes site :(

I have seen them in Homebase, thin, in packs of 9.

Would balsa wood make a good modelling alternative?

Thanks Norm- unfortunately I'm socially shielding due to an underlying medical condition so I can't get to Homebase. I'll amend my original post to specify online.

Would balsa wood make a good modelling alternative?

I'd rather not as cork is much more durable and less likely to break.

There is an article in this months Miniature Wargames and the author is using two layers of corrugated cardboard for buildings, covered by torn bits of newspaper, placed with PVA glue. he then adds timber framing and a tiled roof to that and paints.

Thanks for responding guys. I'm currently in a position where I have to socially shield so cannot get out of the house to look. I've amended my original post.

lessismore0 is one seller, also playmat tiles a possible or shop.boulder.
Hope this helps. Douglas

Look for WALL tiles, not floor tiles. They are thicker & my limited experience
of buying them (B&Q and Wilco) is that they are more likely to be non adhesive.
Another possibility is buy (on-line) some cheap notice boards & cut the cork out.
Cork is very good for adobe type buildings. Easy to pick bits away & get that
lovely crumbly look.  Cork will also allow for slight curvature of walls & for the
base of the building to flair out. Just hold the bits in place with pins/masking tape
until the wood/PVA glue dries.

Thanks, it was £14 postage so I gave it a miss. I did find another potential seller with 1 lot left so fingers crossed for that :)

I used to get my cork tiles from Wickes as well.  Since they stopped stocking it, I've bought a few different types from Amazon.  But nothing I've bought matches the quality of the Wickes ones.  They either are far too bendy or just fall apart with a hard stare.

I wish I knew where Wickes got theirs from.  I make most of my scenery from them.  I'm interested to see how you get on Atheling.

It might be worth widening your searches to model railway suppliers.

I've done just that mate and sent emails to the seller's enquiring if the tiles were backed with adhesive (which I want to avoid). Thus far, no response. Still, it's early days :)

Great idea!!  8) I sometimes amaze myself as my mind obfuscates the obvious! :)

Thanks Ultravanillasmurf  8). I'll get to it right now.

Wickes via ebay.

24 30×30cm for 25 GBP +pnp

Not sure if this is too pricey, not having ever bought cork tiles before!

Brilliant- thanks very much for pointing the seller out to me- appreciated :) I think my google,Amazon and ebay foo is all out of joint these days!!  o_o lol

I've put in an order for 16. I think that's all I'll need as it's mainly Adobe type building that I'm going to be constructing for the Sudan/Middle East/NWF.

Glad to help. I've got some 15mm armies for the HOTT variant Hordes of the Empire so I'm planning to use the tiles for adobe buildings too, as well as Rorke's drift.
