The last floating island got trashed when I moved to New Jersey and it has been a while but I like them so I decided to build another one. This one is considerably smaller than the last one but I plan to build a few more to go with it.

These are specifically built for a 40K Pariah Nexus campaign but they will ultimately be more used for fantasy games. I'd like to get at least 5 of them to float around a table for games. Some will have objectives on them and probably the next one I make will be significantly bigger.

I have some trees that would fit on it and I might put one or two little trees on it to justify the roots sticking out of the bottom to a degree. The bigger ones will probably have bigger pillars on them and more terrain, including trees and maybe some ruins on them.
Here is a pictures with some space marines on it to give you an idea of the scale. I don't have any bananas so had to use figures.

Nice, like the malachite columns.

Looks great. Now you just need make enough to fill a table. :D
-
I'm glad you guys like them.
My plan is to make 5. The second one is built, I just have to texture and paint it. I'll probably start on that a little bit tonight with the puttying, but it is bed time soon and I'm still dealing with a lung offer so it might not get finished. I suppose if I keep getting offers I'll just stay up all night and work on it.

There are nice aren't they :)
-
The island looks very nice. Is it supported by one wire only?
-
This one is only supported by one wire. I've built the next one and that uses only one wire too.
-
Very cool! Excellent piece of terrain.
-
I'm a sucker for a floating island. Love 'em. Will try building one again. Only have a few skybergs and skyrocks at the moment.
-
Very cool. Those columns are a nice touch.
Have you seen the Russian SF movie 'Coma'? Watched it the other night and IMO the story is mehbut the visuals are great. The scenery is a cool twist on the 'floating island' theme.
-
Thanks guys!
I just finished the second one. I'm waiting for the flock to dry on the top part now. I'll get some pictures when I get up tomorrow.
I haven't seen that movie. What did you watch it on? If I can access it I'll give it a shot.

These are excellent.
Regarding the columns can I ask how you painted them? I love the effect.

Here is the next one:

It has Orks on it this time. I couldn't be bothered to pull out my Warcry stuff which is what I really want to photograph on it, but I was up all night taking organ offers and they are in the car. The orks were handy.
Next time . . .

The stones on this one are not as awakened as the last one. There is barely any energy glowing through them.

I put some discarded junk around on the base. There are a couple of knives sticking in the ground on top and a sword lying up there. I'll actually probably rust them up. I also put a head on one of the standing stones. I might paint the eyes like they are glowing with power, as if the energy of the stones is keeping the head alive. I'm not sold on that yet though.

The next one is going to be bigger and possibly taller. It will probably use a couple of roots to support it instead of just the one. I haven't started on it at all yet but I did get a bunch of the foam that the Latrobe Art Center gave me last fall from my storage unit so I'm ready to get started.
And Spinal Tap, the stones are dead easy if you have the right paint. They are based with GW Caliban Green, then Warpstone glow, followed by stippling Moot green over that. Then you paint them with white glue and let that dry. Then the key part is Mordant Earth which is one of GW's technical paints. You just paint it over the whole thing and when it dries voila! cracked surface.
-
Awesome, thank you for sharing.
I've used Agrellan Earth on some bases but didn't realise that the paint/technique could be used how you have.
Looks like I'm going to be buying Mordant Earth next.

Pictors - it was on Amazon.

And isn't there a hobby brand crackle effect? *goes to check*
Yes, there is.

Here is my newest floating island.

This one I supported it with a column instead of the roots. I have the next one built and I've started painting it, it might be done today. I guess it had better be done today as I need it for a game tomorrow.

This is the smallest of the floating islands I've done so far. The columns are from the WizK!DS Pillars and Columns set. I'm going to see if the banners that came with it will fit my Adeptus Titanicus titans as campaign banners. I'm hoping they will fit the Warhounds at least.

I'll get pictures of the next one up when it is finished and then pictures of the first game we use them for tomorrow night.

The islands look great, but I’d be paranoid about putting too much weight on one.
Out of interest did you make a test piece to see how much weight they could take ?
:)
-
I did not make a test piece. I'm guessing they will be able to handle the weight of anything we put on them. Likely we won't put anything that heavy on them.
Here they are in their first game today.

This is the first four and those will be all I'll make for a little bit. Time to get back to painting some figures. It was a nice project. I'd like to do one more of these and then make some more that are chained down.
In this game they didn't move around but were objectives for the Imperial forces to eliminate. They didn't manage it.
