Title: Solo Effort at SAGA Age of Magic - Game #2
Post by: Melnibonean on August 08, 2020, 06:52:09 AM
This is my first try at Age of Magic and also my first try at a solo game of SAGA. It was interesting and worked out okay. Being locked up tight in the Australian COVID epicenter of Melbourne, I have no other choices other than solo gaming (unless I can convince my wife to take up wargaming...And that ain't gonna happen!).

Anyhow, there's a full battle report on my blog at: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/08/age-of-magic-saga-battle.html
Lots of pics as well as my thoughts on AoM as a solo game.

Great looking minis and terrain. I wouldn't have thought that Age of Magic would have played well solo.

Great stuff Melnibonean, don’t worry I can sympathise being already seriously ill I haven’t left my house for 4-5 months now and my wife won’t game with me either. I played the first edition of normal saga but my friend and I found that after a couple of games it became very predictable. Sadly that killed saga for us, is the Age of Magic version better?

Keep up the good work and your spirits, it won’t be for ever (hopefully  :))

This post on the saga forum may interest you:

I have played some solo Saga games. It does tend to work ok straight out of the book.

I look forward to seeing more, you featured some very nice looking armies there.

+1 to both parts of this.

I had thought that the battle boards would make playing Saga solo quite hard work, both from needing to know what the different abilities do, and from being able to counter ones from the other side quite easily. But its great to hear it does work solo.

We have been doing a lot of gaming over video link, which works pretty well. Either with 3 people ( a host and 2 remote players ) or just with 2 players, in the later the host may need to occasionally point out distances or other key info that might not be too apparent to the remote player. We have done a few international remote games as well, which seem to work just as well as local ones.

Thanks for all the positive responses folks.

I tried a second solo game of Sage Age of Magic - This time The Horde v's the Great Kingdoms. This game worked out better than the first, mainly due to my better understanding of the rules. I still got a couple of things wrong but I'm pretty sure I'll have it all working perfectly by the next game.

Another great report. You should be aware that in the first turn you can activate more units even though you only roll three dice. Units can manoeuvre if they start outside of L from an enemy unit and you can also use We Obey from your Warlord and Determination to activate your Heroes.
