Title: Aventine Early Byzantine Heavies- Hand Painted Banner
Post by: Atheling on August 08, 2020, 12:39:47 PM
I have absolutely enjoyed every moment of painting up this unit. They really are beautifully crafted miniatures and deserved all the TLC they received.

The last two ranks are currently drying after glossing and on the advice of meistro Redzed I'm going to be leaving the gloss to go off thoroughly for a few days before matting down.

I hope you enjoy the pics half as much as I did painting them up.

More pics including close ups and waffling can be found on my blog here:

Lovely  8)

Red has forgotten more about painting and varnishing than the rest of us put together so always heed his advice!

Lovely  8)

Yep, he's a not so secret painting god ;) :) Waiting a week for the gloss to go off is somewhat frustrating but nowhere near as frustrating as seeing speckling on the mini's so worth the wait  8)

It's great to finally to get back to to somewhere close to where I was with the old brushes before my wargaming hiatus. A big lesson learned there :)

Hand-painted banner??  :o :o

If you can find the time have a look at my old Justinians and contrast and compare Mike.

An all around fantastic looking unit.

Thanks to all for the kinds word and encouragement- all very much appreciated.  8)

Next up for the Byzantines is either a torsion engine and crew or a unit of 32 Unarmoured Spearmen..... I reckon on the Torsion engine as it doesn't feel as daunting  lol

Thanks guys, very much appreciated  :)

I'm thinking of painting some of the Byzantine Banners on A4 and have them for sale. It's about time I did something with that FA degree  lol

A4 because it will be easy to get in lot of detail on the borders etc then shrink down to 30mm and 40mm squared.

I'll have to see how I go.....

Good advice.  As I'm mainly a weekend painter the timing is easy for me.  I gloss varnish on a Saturday or Sunday and leave them for a week before the first matt coat is applied.

Yeah, but staring at the mini's fully glossed up is driving me crazy  lol

I am definitely going to keep this method up. The hardest part for me is to remember to matt the mini's down on the long awaited day despite leaving reminders online and on paper  o_o :D

I'm curious whether you have a good source for period-appropriate iconography, since I would love to do an Byzantine force in a similar period at some point.

The drawing itself, is just one of many I've been working on. All are sourced from original Eastern Roman Empire 6th Century source material.

Eventually I'm planning on painting up the banners on A4 paper, then reducing them down to various sizes for 28mm and possibly 15mm.

Just watch this space ;)

Keep up the good work

Cheers matey :)

Looking forward to seeing your flags.

I'm using the Aventine Justinian and Flat metal banners on the unarmoured infantry and adding my own freehand banners to the more elite units. That way I can exaggerate the size of the banners to make them stand out on the table top.

I'm thinking of making them available but that is only if I can get around to painting them up on an 400mm pieces of water colour paper first. (Actual banners will be painted at about 300mm then reduced to size, leaving a 100mm margin for the tape as I'm going to stretch the paper first).

I actually like the look of them like that - just for a while.   ;)  Which gloss varnish are you using?  And brush-on or spray?

Humbrol brush on for anything that I've taken  my time with. Humbrol Spray for speedy painty stuff.

The Humbrol Gloss brush one seems to have retained the original chemical makeup, unlike the Humbrol Matt Black, which had to be the best undercoat available (ever!) until they tinkered with it. The Humbrol Matt Black a sheen now  :'(

Have you considered using some of the Byzantine Ikons as reference for banners- I did print one off showing the Archangel St Michael for use as a Cossack banner.

I did some Cossack banners for a friend (years ago) by cutting out the
pictures of CD covers from a catalogue. Classical music ones provided some
very nice religious Icon type banners.

Yeah, I've got a quite a few taken from mosaics the 6th CE Eastern Roman Empire saved and many are already being worked on- well experimented on might be more accurate :) . Just 28mm scale to start off with. the 400mm x 400mm stuff can wait until later ;) :)

If you have anything from the 6 CE please email them to me George.

I've been trying to improve my photography and editing as my last efforts to do so were two decades ago! It's amazing how lazy digital technology can make us all.
