Hi, I'm having a wargames table made in a few weeks time. It will be 6ft deep and I'm undecided on what height it should be.
I've done a reach test on 29, 32 and 36 inch heights and could reach in a depth of 3 and half feet quite comfortably on all of those heights, though I did feel 29 inches felt a bit too low! Taking into account the added height terrain boards and scenery will add to the overall height I was thinking 32 inches might be the better option? Terrain boards will be stored underneath.
Thanks.

I like to be able to sit down at the table, so that dictates how high for me.
I know Vodkafan's table is higher, he likes to stand & therefore he can
store a lot more beneath his table.

I gamed yesterday with a board on top of the dining table, so maybe measure the Dining table and see how that fits? Can sit at that if needed but I find I like to look down on the table from a standing position.

I ended up at 85cm- 34.4 inches, comfortable cigar chairs, height.

Surely the height of a gaming table should be dictated by accepted precedent not comfort or practicality? Thus the two acceptable heights are those of:
a) A baccarat table at a Monte Carlo casino.
b) The plotting board at RAF Bentley Priory.

Sounds good to me!

:D It would be interesting to compare the height of a baccarat table in Monte Carlo to one in Macao, where baccarat is king. Perhaps there is government funding for a study...

As I walk along the Bois Boolong
With an independent air
You can hear the girls declare
"He must be a Millionaire."
You can hear them sigh and wish to die,
You can see them wink the other eye
At the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo.

Ideally? I don't have a measuring tape handy, but I definitely vastly prefer standing tables - with barstools/chairs. Best of both worlds. My table set-up is NOT that because I use two simple folding tables (I suppose I could actually put them on cinder blocks...
I'm a tall boy, so I definitely prefer when I can game on standing height tables. Also gives you more room for storing terrain/junk under the table, and more likely to have an under-table shelf for snacks, books, etc.

we regularly play on a 6ft wide table and the height of mine are the same height as a standard kitchen worktop. we have had no issues.

Just my 2p on the topic. Can you not get a changeable height table? If you're getting it made for you that could be an option. It's a very common characteristic of office desks now. So shouldn't be that difficult to implement!
But seriously, the two big bug bears I have about tables I've played on: 1) there is no leg room below because of an over excess ofstorage, which makes sitting at the table less comfortable. 2) the table is not strong or stable enough to take being lent on by players who are less agile/deep in thought.
