Title: Golgotha's Ancients
Post by: Golgotha on August 19, 2020, 07:43:04 PM
Herewith, Ancient Egyptian chariots, miniatures mostly by Atlantic. 26 Egyptian chariots and 2 Hittite chariots. For most of my games I will be playing Egyptian civil war Upper versus Lower Egypt. This enables 13 chariots per side.

A nice looking chariot corps there. I would use chariots where the crew do not have Egyptian head cloths as Canaanite vassals of your Hittites. Then you have the classic opponents of the Battle of Kadesh

Thank you Fremitus, Corso and Adam - thank you for the Canaanite allies idea.

Herewith, some Ancient war elephants, admittedly more than one would necessarily want, at four packs worth, so 12 elephants, but picked them up cheaply on ebay. Miniatures by HaT, These are Carthaginian elephants but I will also use them for Successor Wars States, they are not as impressive as the Zvezda elephants, which I also have, but are more realistic in size. I really like how you put 2 in the chariot.

As a kid I used to marvel at how well the box art images were painted of the Atlantic miniatures.

I tried so hard to get the hieroglyphics on the sarcophagus...

Then I found out years later they made them in 54mm scale (just never sold the 54mm ancients locally).

Thank you FierceKitty - for any of the ancient Egyptian conflicts references are lacking even the battle of Qadesh (Kadesh) is scant in detail with both sides also claiming victory. Indeed, it is evident that the Egyptians would destroy records and that what information we have is not always reliable. For an Egyptian civil war I admit there is little evidence but a number of clashes did and must have taken place involving Egyptian and Egyptian styled forces on both sides - especially over such a long history and its often tumultuous dynastic changes. Especially as the likes of Hyksos and Nubians threatened and or took control.

It is accounts such as this “As ruler of Nubia and Upper Egypt, Piye took advantage of the squabbling of Egypt's rulers by expanding Nubia's power beyond Thebes into Lower Egypt. In reaction to this, Tefnakht of Sais formed a coalition between the local kings of the Delta Region and enticed Piye's nominal ally—king Nimlot of Hermopolis—to defect to his side. Tefnakht then sent his coalition army south and besieged Herakleopolis where its king Peftjauawybast and the local Nubian commanders appealed to Piye for help. Piye reacted quickly to this crisis in his regnal year 20 by assembling an army to invade Middle and Lower Egypt and visited Thebes in time for the great Opet Festival which proves he effectively controlled Upper Egypt by this time. His military feats are chronicled in the Victory stela at Gebel Barkal” See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piye#Conquest_of_Egypt
and then the vast number of known major conflicts not accounting regional squabbles and or skirmishing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conflicts_in_Egypt

Also the Pharaoh often credited with introducing chariots on a large scale into the Egyptian military establishment is Kamose , indeed records show that he used them victoriously against the Hyksos, who were lording over the northern territories in his reign. See battle of Nefrusy. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chariotry_in_ancient_Egypt

I have therefore read a number of things to lead me to this conclusion.

Thank you Wmyers -  I had the same experience as a child – this is why it has been wonderful finally getting to paint these up to a standard I could never achieve in my youth. I would imagine hieroglyphics on the sarcophagus would still be difficult, lol... Many of these miniatures I have had for near on when they were first introduced. Real classics for the ancient period.

Ancient Egyptian chariots had two crew members (Maryannu - young heroes) each often using bow and spear.

Herewith, some Ancient Sea Peoples, also known as Sherden (often associated with royal guard of the Pharaoh) and Philistines (biblical accounts in particular), ideal as both allies and enemies to my Ancient Egyptians, Hittites and Hebrews. Miniatures by HaT, see: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=565

I would love to make a ship for them given the inspiring Osprey artwork and Egyptian hieroglyphics showing naval conflicts. See: https://ospreypublishing.com/sea-peoples-of-the-bronze-age-mediterranean-c-1400-bc-1000-bc

Ideal for battles like c. 1178 Egyptian-Sea People wars, c. 1178 BCE Battle of the Delta and c. 1178 BCE Battle of Djahy.

Herewith, a Greek ship. I will be using this as a terrain piece. Miniatures are 15mm, Essex Miniatures, I think, which I had lying around. These were the only 15mm ancients miniatures I had but I wanted to do something with them. So why not make them a terrain piece, a ship... I can use it in the background of my 20mm 1/72nd scale Greek games. It is a paper model I found online, it is not great nor particularly well detailed but I am happy with the overall result. I have used it in one game already and we had it deploy troops which then arrived later in the game as reinforcements. It turned out to be a fun little build and refreshing too since I went into it with no particular expectations. The idea of more than one scale on the table at the same time also got me thinking that it might work to have different scales create a sense of depth on the wargame table so the foreground could be a 28mm skirmish game with then increasingly larger armies as one scales down across the table.

The ship looks just as good as anything I've seen made from laser cut mdf!  Better, perhaps.

There are various makers of 1/72 ancients ships and they are the same size as the Atlantic Greek ships.

The Egyptian ships seem harder to replicate and I never did get the Pharoah's Barge set ...

Thank you Bluewillow, Fluffy, Vodkafan,Wmyers - some stunning 1/72 ships are available but been avoiding going down that route due to limited time, money and space, I do wish I had the Egyptian barge set by Atlantic.

Herewith, some Persians and Macedonians including Alexander the Great. Miniatures by Zvezda, see: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=336 and http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=516.

The miniatures came in a box set wargame by Zvezda called Art of Battle, see: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15205/battles-alexander-great. This box contains a rather incredible seven sets of miniatures. I have as yet not played the rules but will give them a bash, despite their obvious failings, one being the translation from Russian. I manged to pick this box up very cheap on ebay so could not resist.

37 Macedonian Phalanx
17 Macedonian Cavalry
45 Greek Infantry
42 Persian Infantry
16 Persian Cavalry and 2 Chariots
2 War Elephants - these in particular are very impressive.

These are still a work in progress, but are largely complete, still need to paint the Persian mounted but their horses are done. The spear/lance weapons are very fragile on these miniatures so I replaced them with brush bristles. Whilst then not as detailed they are more suitable for wargame purposes. I also removed the scythes from the chariot as accounts to what these would have looked like are sorely missing and they would certainly have used non scythed chariots as well. Given the size of the chariots I also decided on three crew members using the additional crew member from the infantry set - an archer.

In particular I am happy with the way Alexander the Great came out, I have painted him largely inline with the Osprey artwork, though I painted his horse, Bucephalus (meaning ox head) black to match historical accounts.

I put together a Celt chariot from my purchases at Colours 2022. Made up of 2 one pound miniatures from a bargain bucket, not actually sure who makes them or what they are but they look the part to me, a warbases chariot see: https://warbases.co.uk/product/celtic-chariots/

and horses sprue by conquest games see: http://www.conquest-games.co.uk/index.php?cPath=28_29

So a bit of a saving... compared to for instance: https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/gallic-celts/products/ancient-celts-chieftain-s-chariot?variant=31468935577680

Though I see Warlord have a 15% sale on at the moment.

I am interested in maybe getting The Victrix set of chariots see: https://www.victrixlimited.com/collections/ancient-gauls/products/celtic-chariot-1

First group of pictures in the sunlight and then the second group of shots in the shade.

In retrospect I think paying a little bit more and getting the Victrix seems the best option. The Warbase chariot itself is rather large. Indeed, I even toyed with the idea of putting in three chaps...

Look forward to seeing yours whichever option you go for.

I am pleased with how it came out. Especially the reins as I drilled a hole in the driver's hand for these and the shield and then I also drilled out the horn on the other miniature and then both had the bottoms of the feet drilled and pinned to attach them to said chariot.

Take a look at Britannia (Grubby Tanks). £10.95 for a British chariot,
complete with two horses & two crew.
As Andy Grub hasn't gotten around to photographing all his ranges,
here are some of the one I bought at Colours.

Thanks DivisMal. Cheers Has Been keen to see you paint it up. Good to finally see what it looks like.

I am thinking of getting some of the wheels warbases make and scratch building some more of my own chariots. Will make the cost even cheaper...

Herewith Celtos Druid converted with staff. I wanted a druid for my Celts and wanted something rather epic. I did not like the double-bladed weapon he came with so gave him a staff instead. At any rate, he should be good for both  Ancients or Fantasy. He is pictured here with a rock I also recently made, though it too is more fantasy than reality.

Herewith a Ballista for my Romans. Had the Ballista lying around and found the two miniatures in a bargain bucket 50p a miniature sale at Colours. Not sure who made any of it but the ballista itself is a nice miniature - sure cheaper than the Warlord equivalent.

Nice additions! The Druid seems like a figure that could fit into a few different historical and fantasy armies, as you point out. I like the Romans, too- a fairly simple model, but it looks good.

I am liking the work you are doing on these Ancients,
but loving the price you are doing it for. :D

Cheers Vodkafan, Has Been, and Pattus Magnus.

Herewith Germanic Barbarian with War Hounds. He could, I think look good in a number of different ancient, Dark Age and fantasy armies and I really do like his rather ominous-looking dogs of war...

Those look quite good! The hounds could be used in a few different settings- I can picture them fitting right into a pulp scenario set on some moors, patrolling around the fence of a security facility (which may or may not be on a moor), or in any number of fantasy warbands.
