Title: Eutaw Springs 1781 AAR - Loose Files & American Scramble
Post by: vtsaogames on September 01, 2020, 04:52:33 PM
As promised, my solo game saw me victorious - and defeated. General Greene needed medical assistance and a tailor to fix the bullet hole. Details can be found here https://corlearshookfencibles.blogspot.com/2020/09/eutaw-spings-1781-aar-via-loose-files.html (https://corlearshookfencibles.blogspot.com/2020/09/eutaw-spings-1781-aar-via-loose-files.html)

So whoever's asking, you have a 100% rating.  Do you find yourself adopting a different mindset for each commander, according to what his personality was (or was perceived to be)?

Very interesting scenario and AAR . It’s great to see these old rules still in use , the forerunner of British Grenadier ,  I think .

Less that than trying to see what happens if I follow each side's plan, more or less. That and take advantage of whatever turns up.

Fair enough.  Do you plan to refight the battle using any other rules?

You're batting .500. That is pretty good!  :D

Tell me, when the militia routed through the Continentals, did the Continentals suffer any kind of morale effect? I would have thought they would be disordered (on a die roll) and need at least one turn to shake that off.

Ray Rivers:

The rules are online here - https://www.wfgamers.org.uk/andy-callans-articles/loose-files-and-american-scramble

As you will see units receive DP's which are a kind of disorder. The Continentals would receive one of these for being interpenetrated. Also probably another one for having a lower quality unit, I am assuming the militia are poorer, rout near them. So 2 DP in total but it would have been a lot worse if the unit routing was equal or higher quality.

Depending on the Continentals quality getting rid of the 2 DP could take the intervention of an commander or time stood reorganising.

The militia retreated on orders through the Continentals. This gave the regulars 1 DP for being marched through. If the militia had routed, they would have given a DP for that but then flowed around the better formed troops rather than through them. In the rules as written, units do not rout from long distance fire alone. They must be within 4" of enemy troops and involved in the combat process.

Edit: the Continentals were 2nd class (pretty good), the militia were 3rd class (pretty good for militia) and can shake off 1 DP per turn on their own if stationary and not in combat. An officer can come and help out.

Okay, thanks for the explanation.
