Title: Early renaissance Scots army, latest update page 10
Post by: Stuart on September 04, 2020, 04:04:16 PM
Here's a work in progress for some early Scots Pike, nothing painted yet but hopefully good to look at anyway. It's also an invitation for any book or other resource recommendations that you might have in addition to those i've listed on the blog post;

https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/work-in-progress-scots-pike.html (https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/work-in-progress-scots-pike.html)

Thanks very much  :)

I know Osprey series can be a bit "curate's egg-ish" but the Osprey Elite 167 - Scottish Renaissance Armies, 1513-1550 by Jonathan Cooper is quite good for visual assistance.

Edit: Ah, should have read your blog first, as I see that's one of your core books!  I suppose that means that I'm Flodden a dead horse.....

Great conversions, and excellent work on the sculpting (as usual)!

Silly question, but what's the chap on the right wearing here?

Following and ready to nick ideas! Are you going to have the front row with pavises?
Title: Re: Early Scots Pike
Post by: Stuart on September 07, 2020, 05:38:04 PM
I don’t know, the mind boggles at how these might have been carried downhill at Flodden or if they were just used while they were standing prior to the attack going in?

I’m tempted to do a couple of bases of standing figures with them but I’m not sure on the marching pose  ???
Title: Re: Early Scots Pike
Post by: macmod on September 07, 2020, 07:01:51 PM
Yeah I’d imagined them to be held high enough to prevent arrows hitting the bearer in the face. Unless they put their heads down and hoped for the best 🥺

To some extent the pikes would act to take some of the impetus out of an 'arrow storm'.

I'm a bamboozled by the pavise question- how would one carry a pavise and a pike unless it was slung on the back? And even then?

Very interested in hearing what you all think  ???

Post by: Griefbringer on September 09, 2020, 05:04:40 PM
They do not look that early to me, but then again lately I have been more into Middle Ages than all this new fangled 16th century stuff...

That said, this reminds me that I have some spare plastic Perry foot knights and a few left over pike arms from the Mercenaries set, I should try combining those at some point to provide some well-harnessed Flemish foot. But that will probably wait until next year.

Not sure if this is accurate, but weren't the front ranks of the schiltron noblemen?  If so, wouldn't they have retainers to maybe carry the pavisse in front of them?

Thinking of it, there are other examples of similar heavy infantry from the period like this

Who knows? This is the problem with just about all Medieval sources. another problem might be; do we know there were enough Noblemen to fill the front ranks of the pike blocks?

I'm trying to remember whether I read about the front ranks from a secondary (or more likely tertiary) source quoting a primary source or no..... it's something that I would have to go back to.

So, to launch ourselves back OT. The standard of the putty work is top notch Stuart and I cannot wait to see them painted up and ready for action  8)

Hmmm.... good point. At what point does a large shield end and a pavise begin?

True. And everyone has their own interpretation of what they feel to be right from the sources etc.

I look forward to seeing more- it all looks very enthralling thus far  8)

I think if you look at the rolls of the Scots Nobility who died while at Flodden while fighting in the front rank you get and idea of how many must have been fighting. The Scots nobility was hamstrung for a generation after the battle.

Well, if I was a nobleman or the son/wife/brother/parent of a nobleman who died in battle. I would want the records to show that I died valiantly whilst fighting in the front rank.
Those kinds of records are seldom truly trustworthy. There are often so manny people who die fighting in the front rank, that you might think that there are no other ranks...

Edit: Ohh and back on topic. The conversions look amazing.

I thought i'd modify the title so I can just keep this thread going as the Scots units take shape. It's also a small encouragement to myself to create many many units !

Here's the first completed unit prior to basing, some hardy borderers looking for trouble. You can see the finished unit over on the blog;

Thanks

Oh..... no matter, they look amazing  :)

I've just checked, I had not noticed that there were a couple of 'squared' gambeson in that pack despite owning at least four of them  :?

I think these types of padded armours (squared etc) were coming more into fashion post 1500  ???

Great work Stuart, the chap with the poleaxe in particular is a very effective conversion. And the cloak works very nicely.

There is one such jack in the original Perry WOTR plastic set.

Super job Jimmy! I love what you're doing with the studded targes.

I did some Scots pike for WOTR an age ago... Kind of fanciful really. But all those Saltires are very decorative :)

Pike batch 2 and both batches together.

With this batch i've upped the quota of men in little to no armour and added in a gentleman and French Captain. There's also a couple of figures wearing thick linen scarves which was a rudimentary defence against sword strokes.

batch 3 is underway :)

Damn, I was hoping the photos would be in the "quote" as well.  Anyway, technical question - in a "marching" pose such as shown in your piccies, would they put something on the end of the pike (a strip of rough fabric perhaps?) to help the owner to grip it in this position?  Being right on the butt end, I can't see how it would interfere with any other use.
Title: Re: Early renaissance Scots army, latest update 11 October
Post by: Stuart on October 23, 2020, 04:47:00 PM
Not that I’m aware of. There are a few continental sources that depict fabric at about 1/3 to half the way up the pike as per this example.

Work on the Scots is continuing, may I present the ill fated (hmm this title applies to a lot of sixteenth century Scots nobles) Alexander Home, third Lord Home.

Quite remarkable as always, they appear to have stepped out of an oil painting into the round.

I am surprised, though, aren't the golden cross and choughs on blue St Edward's arms?  And also used by Richard II if memory serves?  Did they come to Scotland by some strange route, or were they shared by someone else?
Title: Re: Early renaissance Scots army, latest update page 9

They’re the arms of St Margaret of Scotland. and, confusingly identical to those of Edward the Confessor. They were both related (uncle) and she was originally Margaret of Wessex. In the same year Henry VIII also took the banner of Edward the Confessor to France. confusing stuff ;D

Truly inspirational work, I am in awe. The standard of the sculpting and attention to detail, complemented by the exquisite painting, is a joy to behold.

Flodden has long been something of a fascination of mine since childhood. I've thus far avoided succumbing to the temptation of doing it in 28mm (mainly due to lack of good figures, and the numbers required to do the scale of the battle justice), and so stuck with 15s (don't ask how that particular project is going....) However, with the advent of Steel Fist to mix and match with Perry stuff, and such inspiration as this, it's getting bloody hard to resist! I may even have downloaded NMTB to dip a toe in the water...

Thanks very much Iain

I don’t think I would have made the plunge without the extra time that last year presented to me. They’re certainly one of my favourite units in the collection and I know I need to do a lot more to do it justice.

The anniversary on Thursday might be a good time to start
