Hello y'all,
I have begun my first foray into historicals with Persians and Greeks. This seems like the perfect time to start with so many manufacturers revisiting the era and because of my developing interest in the history following my university seminar on Xenophon in the Spring. I have made a blog to track my progress and painting progression and would be thrilled if y'all were interesting in checking it out, giving me some feedback, and following along!

Great stuff, they are a interesting army to build. I preferred to build the Pontic army as it has a lot more variation then most.
Just a tip for you, the sleeves should match the tunic colour.

So I am trying to cover quite a bit of ground with these armies. I am trying to cover from 500ish to Hydaspes in 326 (I am going to have an Indian army as well to supplement the Persians). So while I have immortals in more modern garb right now, I am going to buy some older ones in robes from 1st Crops in the future. But yes, being able to fight an Anabasis (Xenophon) campaign is a dream. At the same time, I want to do the battle's preceding Salamis with Xerxes, but also have a Persian army under Darius 3 that can fight against Alexander (though I have no intention of making the opposing force). As for my Greeks, they can be for the Peloponnesian war (I will make some as Spartans), but they'll mostly serve as mercenaries for Xenophon and the larger Persian army as well as an opposing force against the Persians for battles up to Salamis.

2500 years on and still going strong. You can't go wrong with Greeks and Persians as a starter army. Many of the units will be useful in other armies if you spread out, as described. I find the best advice is to stick to two forces that one can provide a game without needing others to join in. That way you are always ready to set up and play. Of course with Persians and Spartans you start off with a perfect set of scenarios where one side can be outnumbered. Thermopylae can have a dozen Spartans (and some allies) versus as many regenerating Persians as you like - and a scenario can be weaved around that. My first game of Thermopylae was waged on the edge of a book shelf with Atlantic Greeks vs. all sorts of crazy stand in Persians, from Airfix Native Americans to Arabs. Then later Scruby 20mm were added.
The good news is you have a lot of options now to collect these armies.

Good point! Especially quite a few in prominent positions such as Clearchus and Cheirisophus. Which, interestingly enough, ends up being a point of contention and rift within the 10,000 (or at least what was left of them) when they arrive at the Bosporus and the Argives split with the army for a time. On that note, if anyone has good ideas for Anabasis general figures I'd love to hear them! Been looking at Foundry and Warlord recently.
