Title: IHMN: Some thoughts for the Beginner in Designing an Adventuring Company,
Post by: Dining Room Battles on September 14, 2020, 01:26:56 AM
During our "Time of Isolation" I am taking Craig Cartmell's suggestion (one of the authors of In Her Majesty's Name) to jot down my thoughts for many who have recently joined the IHMN Facebook Page and Lead Adventur forum and also for those who are experienced with the year 1895. One of the common threads I see are variations of what Adventuring Company should I do or where do I get the figures?

Continuing on from Part 1, Honorable Son #5 (The Skirmisher) pointed out that there are other views that need to be addressed when designing an Adventuring Company - primarily his. He has rightly pointed out that he has defeated me more in IHMN than any other person!

For me, playing skirmish games provide more personality for the little men and women we are pushing along the table. I believe providing the background of the Leaders or other characters used In Her Majesty's Name just adds flavor to the Adventuring Companies and (dare I say) they start to take on the traits you have established, or start to take on traits of their own which adds much enjoyment (and sometimes outright laughter) to the games.

This is why Charles and I refer to IHMN as a 'narrative' skirmish wargame   :)

What's a great game of Adventure without villains? In our little corner of In Her Majesty's Name, the great villains that have caused the most problem are The Witch King of Sokur (BWAH HAH HAH) and Fu Manchu. One was completely made up by Honorable Son #5 (The Skirmisher), the other based on the books and movies (and a little creative imagination) about Fu Manchu (next post).

I am the Crawling Chaos, the Nyarlathotep of legend, but most importantly I am the reborn Witch King of Sokur (BWAH HAH HAH!).

"I am a doctor of philosophy from Edinburgh, a doctor of law from Christ's College, a doctor of medicine from Harvard. My friends, out of courtesy, call me 'Doctor'."

Great stuff! I love your imagination and thoughtful application of research to help suspend disbelief. You are inspiring me to try a similar project set in the Napoleonic era using Sharp Practice.

One of the great things about In Her Majesty's Name is adding real, historical (or history as I wish it!) to the games. As a historian, (and a biased American) I have always been fascinated with Theodore Roosevelt, the youngest man ever to be President of the United States. (No, it was not JFK; JFK was the youngest elected; Roosevelt was younger when he became president after the assassination of President McKinley.)

In the Second Edition there shall be an entire chapter focused on how to create your own figures and companies. Something Neil has already mastered  :)

Some thoughts for the Beginner in Designing an Adventuring Company, Part 7 (Heroes from Literature and Movies):

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone. Most people think I'm this Scot and military guy but I'm secretly a nerd and geek! But the geeks get the girls! Okay, enough editorializing. On with the show.

As mentioned earlier, I grew up on ERB, Haggard, Kipling, Asimov, Robert Howard, Lovecraft, Jules Verne, comic books and pulp. With In Her Majesty's Name I can bring the heroes of my youth on to the gaming table. But how to do it? Research (re-read those books) and research (yes I watched Gunga Din (1938) twice and took notes).

Some thoughts for the Beginner in Designing an Adventuring Company, Part 8a (My Characters for you to use!):

Dorothy Gale of Kansas, Princess of Oz and her stalwart companion Toto

First the Heroes! When I saw Reaper Minatures Steampunk version of Oz I thought to myself: "Self, shiny new toy syndrom!". So I did an Adventuring Company based on Dorothy and one on the Wicked Witch of the West. But for the purposes of this post, I'm going to concentrate on some of the leaders of the Adventuring Companies or unique character and then the support casts for their companies in another post. I'm not going to repeat characters that I have already posted in this series.

Some thoughts for the Beginner in Designing an Adventuring Company, Part 10a (Location, Location, Location)

It's 1895: So . . . where do you want to go? Another one of the great advantages of In Her Majesty's Name is that most games only require 4 feet x 4 feet of table space - but of course you can have bigger games! When I started playing IHMN, most of my terrain was for 15mm scale gaming and cardboard buildings I had picked up playing Warhammer and WH40K. In other words, no real 25/28mm terrain for 1895.

Finding a locale to have an adventure with In Her Majesty's Name is not difficult. When I started playing I just used the terrain I had. In the picture above, before I purchased "the ruins" from a pet store, you can see palm trees from a dinosaur children's play set, a statue from GW's The Lord of the Rings Strategy game, a stone wall from Warhammer, a stone bridge from Gale Force 9's river "Battlefield in a Box", and cobblestones from my Christmas Village layout!
