Title: What Do We Say To The God Of Death?
Post by: Plynkes on September 27, 2020, 07:06:25 PM
Back in October of 2018 I had something of a medical catastrophe, which I like to refer to as "The Event" (Remain Indoors! Do Not Think About The Event!) The particular brand of Event that I had you don't generally walk away from, but luckily I was sent to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham, UK, renowned for the life-saving brain surgery performed on that plucky Pakistani schoolgirl who had a bullet put in her head by the Taliban. Well, I tried a bit of their brain surgery and they saved my life too! Even better, it never cost me a penny. So thanks for that, Clem Attlee!  :)

NorthStar Nick and the moderator team at LAF sent me a smashing card, it was a lovely surprise to get it:

(You have to remember this was 2018, and Star Wars was still relatively popular, Lucasfilm had only managed to alienate about half of the fanbase at that point, seems they have now finished the job ;))

So thanks to all the gang, it kept me going to know I had LAF to come back to, and you guys had my back. Speaking of which, it has been quite the struggle to try and become a proper LAFer again. For a long time it was just too difficult for me to paint or do any modelling. But earlier this summer I picked up the brushes once more, and I'm slowly working my way back towards being my old self. Progress is terribly slow, as I can't do it for very long at a time, but I am loving it, in fact I don't remember a time when I was so inspired about the hobby. I used to be one of those people who has long periods when I'm just not into it. Those days seem to be gone, thankfully. Currently I am not working on any projects, just painting things I feel like painting.

So that brings me to this thread. As I am happily saying "Not Today" to the God of Death every day, I want to celebrate the fact by documenting the painting of my return to LAF. A kind of one-man painting club, displaying all the figures as I paint them. As it is just me on my own I think I shall limit it to 50 instead of the usual painting club hundred. There are no rules except for this: If I paint 50 figures before I cark it, I win. If I don't, I lose, and the God of Death wins.  :)

Okay, enough bloody preamble (he does go on a bit, doesnt he?), let's get this thing moving...

No.1: Dead of Dunharrow

(Games Workshop)

No.2: That slightly potty posh lady off Game of Thrones and Star Wars

(Wargames Illustrated Giants in Miniature)

These two were done for the painting club currently running on the Fantasy board. I have a couple more in the pipeline for that club that I hope to finish soon.

No.3: The Legend Himself

(Lead Adventure Miniatures)

It's cool having a figure based on yourself. At least, I think it is. Alex sent me a bunch of these when they first came out, and it has taken me till now to paint any of them. Don't know why I avoided painting them, maybe I wasn't convinced it was a good likeness. Though that I think, may just be vanity on my part. I certainly recommend getting your own mini-you.

As I have a few of these, I thought I'd do a conversion, too:

No.4: Another Plynkes

(Lead Adventure Miniatures/Artizan Designs conversion)

Here we see Plynkes dressed in the official ceremonial uniform and regalia of the Colonial Adventures moderator.
As for the likeness, judge for yourself - do you think he looks like me?

No.5:  Mossi warrior in French service, Togoland 1914

(Perry Miniatures conversion)

No.6: Alan Watermain

(Perry Miniatures very slightly converted)

Actually an 1850s Quatermain, inspired by the novel "Child of Storm."

No.7: The Fresh Prince of Ndondakusuka

(Warlord Games)

Prince Cetshwayo kaMpande, 1856.

That's it for now, more soon, I hope!!

Blimey, you've been through something. Good to see you're swinging back with it.
That's a pretty good start for your personal painting club.

No.6: Alan Watermain

Would Alek Y Watermain work as an alternative name?

Edit: Alex E Watermain is probably better.

Good to see you back and on the mend. Didn’t realise you had ascended to the papacy though. I do think the shield and knobkerrie wotsit are great additions to the pontifical togs.

I’d like to think my own words to the God of Death would be ‘fuck off, I’m busy’ but I’m sure that first time around that was not uppermost in my mind.

"Don't pay the ferryman - don't even fix a price! Don't pay the ferryman, until he takes you to the other side."

As with everybody, I'm thoroughly glad we've got you back, and those minis look every bit as splendid and expressive as in any "golden heyday" of the past. Looking forward to more.

Maybe tone down the stubble on the pewter Plynkoi a bit, though.  ;) It's not half as unkempt in any pics I've seen of you, old chap.  lol

Welcome return of a first class painter, and gentleman, glad you were able to do it, and even better you continue to do so.

Waiting with interest to see more, and how many of them are Plynkoi conversions.

Thanks most definitely to the skilled staff at the hospital for giving you and us an extension to your stay in this world, and membership of LAF.

Long may you continue to be around and doing stuff.

Please, stay as long as you can.

So very happy you are still with us Mr. Plynkes but saddened to hear you have been through hell.

LAF would be a more hollow place without your lovely pjs and Colonial wisdom for sure. Welcome back and keep figting!

Seems to me you've got that fucker (Mr Death) in a headlock and are not letting go.

Stellar, stellar, I  say!, work on those on those miniatures! I have always held you to be one of the legendary contributors of LAF and I am glad to see it  till holds true.

This thread would be a wonderful thing at any time but, this year especially, it's absolutely magnificent.
I've got this bookmarked with every expectation of seeing all fifty paintied miniatures :-)

Really good to have you back!

You get much better regalia in CA than we do over in Workbench. We get a ratty looking sennet...

I am very pleased to read that your recovery is progressing. I get irritated when real life interferes with painting toy soldiers, but your experience puts my issues properly into perspective! I very much enjoyed your first two posts in this thread and I look forward to reading many more!

Thanks, everyone. It feels good to be back in the swing of things.

Top punning there! You put more thought into it than  I did! :)

Maybe tone down the stubble on the pewter Plynkoi a bit, though.  ;) It's not half as unkempt in any pics I've seen of you, old chap.  lol

Indeed, Chris. Wishful thinking on my part, perhaps. My actual stubble is nowhere near as rugged and manly!

Who do I talk to about this?

I think we blew most of the budget on shiny suits of armour and fancy swashbuckling hats for Captain Blood. There wasn't much left in the kitty by the time we got down the page to Workbench. My insistance on undress outfits for everyone of Lederhosen and little feathered hats didn't help matters, either. You wear that hat well, though. You look very distinguished and venerable in that picture (not like the real you at all! :))

Good to hear you are feeling better and enjoying your painting again.   I would say the likeness is good - one has to accentuate some of the features to look good in 28mm after all.

Wonderful work! Seems as good as ever to my eye.

I'm afraid you've one-upped me on your encounter with the old hooded guy with the farm implements - all of my encounters with him have come while the only thing I had to say was "zzzzz", so I can hardly claim any active resistance on my part so far.  ;D

Thanks, Historiker!

Feel like a new post is well overdue. I have been painting a lot, just haven't finished anything lately. I think maybe I have been painting too many different things at once, instead of getting a smaller number done.

Actually, I don't really mind. That I am still behaving like the proverbial "wargames butterfly" is somehow almost reassuring. :)

That said, I hope to have some new things to post soon.

Please no stress and no hurry - it is our hobby after all  :)

Sometimes I have felt "painting pressure" but when I don't care about getting stuff done it is mostly not only the most productive but also the most fun!

I know that "painting a lot but somewhat spread out and therefore nothing is done" phenomenon all too well  lol

No.8: Trooper Frank Cowles, Australian Light Horse

(Lancashire Games)

Trooper Frank has his own thread, which is mostly about trying to find out the story of an Australian Light Horseman, and unearth why his name appears on a war memorial in the west of England:

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=121481.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=121481.0)

Nos. 9 & 10: "Mostly"

(Gale Force 9)

Had that new Aliens board game for Christmas, so I thought I'd slap some paint on a couple of the figures that came with it, just for fun. On reflection it was a stupid idea, because now of course I have to paint the bloody rest.

No.11: "Angoni Zulu" Rebel, British Central Africa, 1898.

(Foundry/Copplestone Conversion)

Nice easy bit of colonial converting. It's what I do. :)

No.12: Heim ins Reich

(Games Workshop)

The Lady Galadriel salutes the new regime as Lothlórien is annexed and absorbed into Greater Germany. Middle Earth, 1938.

No.13: Maiwa Returns!

(Sculpted by LAFer Duke Donald, a Plynkes original not for sale in shops)

It's been a long process, starting way back in 2017, but I finally have my Maiwa figure. She already has her own WIP thread (Link) (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=104028.0), but I'll probably give her a new one with a few more pics when I'm good and ready. And for those who wanted a Maiwa of their own, there will be a way to get one without paying a penny. Watch this space.

No.14: A Skellington

(Don't remember the manufacturer, but I got him from North Star)

Just fancied painting him, and I'm glad I did, he was lots of fun to do. May well end up as a random monster in Frostgrave or something like that.

And now ladies and gentlemen, let us welcome you to The Stupid Haircut of Year Contest, 1861 East African Regional Finals...

Nos. 15, 16, 17 & 18: The Sukuma

(Foundry and North Star conversions)

A strong showing from these perennial favourites this year, with two extremely pointy-headed fellows. Though there have already been complaints that their team captain's entry is, in fact not a haircut, but some kind of hat. We'll keep you posted on developments here.

Nos. 19, 20, 21 & 22: The Gogo

(Copplestone and Foundry conversions, plus an Empress head is in there somewhere)

Yes, we haven't seen them since the 80s, but Jane, Belinda and the gang are back, this time in the Stupid Hair Contest. A strong showing, I think you'll agree. We don't know how you feel at home, but here in the comm box, the feeling is that at this stage the Go-Go's are just edging it.

Ok well I nearly missed this thread. I never come on this board ever but thanks to my pudgy fingers and small phone screen I accidentally ended up here and it turns out to be a happy accident as this is a cracking little thread.

Thought you might like that one, Jon. I think that he has been sitting on my painting desk for nearly ten years. I did the initial conversion all that time ago but then sort of lost interest in him. But I now have a policy that nothing new goes on the painting table until I have finished everything that is on there already. It had got so crowded that I was working in a little corner of it measuring about 7" x 7".  :) Well, enough! So I have to get all these annoying half-forgotten things done so that I can move on to the latest stuff buzzing around inside my head.

Thanks for all the encouraging words, friends. I really am enjoying being more active in the hobby again.

No.s 23, 24, 25 & 26: The Shilluk

(Copplestone Castings)

Back at the Stupid Hair Finals, a late showing by the Shilluk, with some fine examples of follicular folly. Unfortunately we've just heard that another of the teams (believed to be the Gogo) has lodged an official complaint. They claim that the Shilluk are ineligible, as they come from the Sudan, which is outside the East African finals' catchment area. The Shilluk have challenged this complaint, their defence being that while Sudan is officially in North Africa, they are from South Sudan, which is in East Africa.

It is reported that the Gogo response is that this is supposed to be 1861, and therefore there is no such country as South Sudan.

These ill-omened buggers have been on my desk since 2018. In fact they were there awaiting paint just as I was rushed to hospital. Consequently I have avoided even looking at them, as they were unpleasant reminders of a very rough time. But now they are done, and good riddance to 'em! Lovely figures, mind. Copps is still my favourite sculptor. But so big! His scale creep is really getting out of hand, I feel. His range was meant to be an extension of the one he did for Foundry, but if they get much bigger, they won't be compatible at all! Oh well...

The inhabitants of this region are some of the darkest-skinned people on the planet, so I decided to ditch my usual method for Africans  and try something else. I think it is still a work in progress and needs refinement, but a just-about satisfactory start to coming up with a formula for the darker flesh tones (though to be honest, in the photo they don't look all that different to my usual efforts). We'll see if I can improve it any if I ever do more of these guys.

Oohhh those are cracking really nice paint jobs. I really like Copplestone's Shilluk and Dinka miniatures but, sadly they live a little bit to far north to really fit with my Darkest Africa stuff. I did manage to re-purpose some Dinka as Nkonde mind.

Where did you get the spears? I don't remember my Dinka being supplied with any spears.
Title: Re: What Do We Say To The God Of Death?
Post by: Plynkes on May 04, 2021, 10:02:37 AM
Indeed, the Shilluk and Dinka don't come with spears. I made them. I think the base for them was just some plain metal rod spears, possibly the ones that Foundry usually bung in with an order (apologies if I am mistaken, it was over two years ago that I actually did it). The spear tips themselves are from Foundry Masai spears (I have a ton of those), and I noticed that in photos the Shilluk seem to love to decorate their spears with feathery bits, so fashioned some from modelling putty.

I don't really have a use for them either, but at the time I just wanted to get some as they looked like they might be fun to paint (which they were). If I ever paint any more they might get involved in a skirmish against some early Mahdists, or possibly some Khartoum slavers. I think they'd also do as 'generic' tribesmen in an Alan Quatermain game.

You should get your hair permed and do it anyway, H. If you still have that magnificent beard a huge blond Shilluk Barnet would go perfectly with it. We have the technology! Do it!

Might not be any more for a while. While I have been managing to avoid the God of Death, my laptap has not been so lucky. No way to edit and upload photos until it has been fixed or replaced. This PS4 might be great for watching Amazon Prime or playing Red Dead Redemption, but when it comes to photography it is a dunce. So I'll just keep on with the painting and do some uploads when things improve on that front.

......I think they'd also do as 'generic' tribesmen in an Alan Quatermain game.....

There is no better reason for getting any native figures than a Quatermain game.

Oh, by the way... A bit belated, but for the absolute darkest skin tone, you might want to try adding some blue or purple (a VERY small amount, mind you) or reducing the amount of yellow in your mix (play around to see what's best for you), since the darkest skin tones start to overwhelm any ruddy tint at all.

Here's an example of someone who doesn't have quite the darkest skin tone, but whose picture is still useful because she's right on the edge of that group, so with some varied lighting her face shows aspects of both merely dark skin and truly "coal black" skin (of course "coal black", is a misnomer which only confuses things because such skin still possesses as complex a colour as anyone else's).

EDIT: Bottom right is a more uniform example of the same phenomenon. Again, you'll note how little any yellow is present, and that such dark skin begins to actually have a uniquely cooler tone than you normally see with skin colours, even fairly dark ones.

Thanks, Fram. Some ideas to play around with there. African skin is normally my bread and butter, but the 'coal black' that you'd want for these guys is something that I think is very difficult to master. If I'm honest, I'm not sure I've seen many (or indeed any) painted figures that pulled it off to any great degree.  But I like a challenge and I shall incorporate these ideas next time.

Stupid dead laptop and a touch of the Covid kind of wrecked my comeback plans last year, but I'm back, baby! These guys all have their own thread (Link) (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=135178.0), which will no doubt explain what the hell they are about, but may as well post them here in the log too:

Lapsed into another slump after a second COVID bout (Plynkes, you can't keep blaming COVID for everything! Stop it!). Found painting slow and very difficult once again, and got a bit dispirited at the quality of my output. But recently I've acquired a renewed interest in actually playing with these little toys of ours, thanks to a few games of Congo with my nephew, and then being put on to Five Leagues from the Borderlands by a good friend. So with a new 'get them on the table attitude' I've taken up the brush once more and am enjoying it again.

You can tell you are back in the groove when you realise it is past midnight and you are still painting.  :)

No.s 34 to 44: Five Leagues From the Borderlands
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/58/163-260323150821.jpeg)
A few members of our warband on the left, and on the right some old GW LotR figures because we needed some more baddies.

Five Leagues is a solo/co-op fantasy skirmish game that doesn't require too many figures per battle, and has a rather nice procedurally-generated campaign system that makes a story for you as you go. Really enjoying it at the moment. So not only I am a painter again, I'm a gamer once more too.

Only six more to go and I win! (oh dear, I'm gonna get hit by a bus now I've said that)

What they all said.  Great to see you back at the brushes, your work is always worth a look and admire.

Make sure the bus is at most 1/56 scale, preferably smaller.

I will need to take a look at those rules now as well.

Keep at it!

Well done!

Both on the painting and on beating the god of death.

I’ve had a pleasant read back through the thread (well mainly a look) at all the great figures you have painted up. I do like the Ent as a very large full stop to this!

You sir are amazing. +1 Well done.

Now get down and give us 50 more.

Take your time, no rush.

Its mainly to force you to stick around longer, and seems to be working.

So I am not knocking it, just enjoy seeing you keep staying around.

The longer the better.

Volume II Nos. 1-11: Yet more Five Leagues*

Some random enemies and warband members.

Five Leagues seems to be consuming all my gaming/painting energy at the minute. Not complaining, mind, I'm loving it. Actually painting for games can be very satisfying, can't it? For the longest time I was not doing that.

*Yes, there are twelve figures in the picture, but I just realised one of them already appeared in Volume I and is not a newly-painted figure at all. Oops!  :)

Getting to actually game with your newly painted figures is very satisfying.  Hope to get back to that more often in 2024 myself.
