Charley : I'm not goin' to my maker without knowin' your given name. Mine ain't Waite; it's Postelwaite. Charles Travis Postelwaite. What's yours? Sure ain't Boss.
[Boss hesitates]
Charley : I mean it, Boss. I'm asking you straight up.
Boss Spearman : It's Bluebonnet.
Charley : Bluebonnet?
Boss Spearman : Bluebonnet, yeah.
Charley : No middle name?
Boss Spearman : No, just Bluebonnet Spearman. And don't you tell no one. I want to hear you swear an oath now, go on.

Damn it Paul, I don’t need any more projects lol
Seriously, if you plan on the breadth and depth that you are displaying with the Vietnam range, then this will be another winner...and one I’ll jump on board with
8)
-
I can guarantee it will not be as large as the Vietnam range is and will be but it will be comprehensive and across the entire spectrum of Hollywood westerns including cavalry and Indians.
-
The world needs Brittles & Quincannon in 28mm.
-
It certainly does.
-
I'm interested. It too is a funny name.
-
Oooh... Hollywood style cavalry with neckerchiefs, braces and gauntlets? Count me in!!!
-
"Hollywood western" is a fairly broad term. I'm guessing Blazing Saddles might be included (and I would hope so), but what about independent films like Slow West? The laundry drying scene from the latter would make a great vignette, if a little difficult to incorporate in a game.
-
Damn it Paul, I don’t need any more projects lol
Have to echo that ^__^, but...
I look forward to seeing how this range develops.

Take it as a very broad term. It will include all film and 'television' film. In short popular film western genre.
Not sure I have seen Slow West so I will have a look.
Did you know that John Wayne turned down the part taken by Gene Wilder of the Waco Kid. How different would that film have been. lol
-
That is something I would be interested in, too. Cowboys and Indians ... needs some trecking farmers etc then for the occasional raid!!
-
Boss Spearman : We come for justice, not vengeance. Now them is two different things.
Charley Waite : Not today they ain't.
-
:-* :-*
-

I didn't know that, but think he did the right thing, though a lot more could have been made of the anomalous 'Kid' in the character's name.
I can highly recommend Slow West, which might be termed a post-modern western, I suppose. It's very different from Open Range, which, while excellent, is very traditional, and might have been made 50 years ago or more.

Get General Mapache and his scruffy shower on the list!

Any possibility of some shots of the new figures next to some Knuckleduster, Foundry and Artisan Old West ranges to see how they stack up size wise?
-
Any possibility of some shots of the new figures next to some Knuckleduster, Foundry and Artisan Old West ranges to see how they stack up size wise?
That would be really useful. Knuckleduster are my go to figures for the OW, these will have to go some to compete with the quality of those. I'd love to see a comparison picture. :)
-

No idea on size comparison but I have done a quick piccie against a ruler if that helps?
-
Ok, that's helpful. Thanks.
They look to be on the large size then, 30mm to the shoulder and just short of 40mm to the top of the hat? more Black Scorpion size than Knuckleduster or Foundry.
-
Too 'tall in the saddle' for fitting in with the figures & scenery I have.
-
Yeah, that's a real shame, they are huge, way too tall to fit my existing collection as well. :(
-
@Paul, Was it a conscious choice to go for a bigger scale than those used by established ranges?
I guess if you're planning a comprehensive range in the long run it won't matter, but in the short term people with existing collections may be less inclined to purchase incompatible figures?
-
Surely Hollywood means larger than life than life doesn’t it?
They do look rather good.
-
They look like they could work with the old HLBS 1/48/36mm/40mm figures - but waay too big to match any of my stuff :(
-
These do look disturbingly good. ;D
-

Shame nobody makes "larger than life" terrain to go with them then. ::)
-
@Paul, Was it a conscious choice to go for a bigger scale than those used by established ranges?
I guess if you're planning a comprehensive range in the long run it won't matter, but in the short term people with existing collections may be less inclined to purchase incompatible figures?
To answer your questions second first;
Yes it will be a comprehensive range so pretty much stand alone. Yes Malmute there is a lot of terrain that fits so that's not an issue ;)
Yes it was a conscious decision to sculpt this big but not in a detrimental way to other ranges but simply because the sculptor we chose to do this range sculpts this size. For example he also sculpts our moderns range. He also sculpts our ECW range and that seems to sit in the middle of the various ECW ranges when it comes to size.
Not sure what you mean by established ranges as you do not list them and Empress design ranges to work within the realms of their ranges. I would imagine most others do as well. I cannot imagine that the Perry twins start a new range by looking at the competition and trying to match them. Its not how companies seem to work. We certainly do not.
Having said that there was one range that I did take into account and that was Galloping Major's developing Apache Wars range. Lance plans to develop his Apache Wars range in the near future and due to our long term friendship I did not wish to undermine his plans so we will not be moving into his areas but the figures will compliment each other size wise.
For example see below.
So I am sorry that some of you are disappointed that our new figures will not work for your existing collections but if we had made them smaller we would have upset others for the same but different reason.
-
Shame nobody makes "larger than life" terrain to go with them then. ::)
I can/would make terrain to go with them, but it means not using them with my:-
Dixon, Foundry, Hinchcliffe, Gringo40, etc etc.
Nor would it fit in with the collections of the lads I play with.
Big shame.
-
Dixon, Foundry, Hinchcliffe, Gringo40, etc etc.
Those old timers, and has beens should be out on the stoop, in their rocking chairs anyway!!!

I do have a pack of MDF rocking chairs, just never got into the swing of them.

Thanks for the reply. By 'established' (and I could have used 'existing' or 'other current') I was referring to Knuckleduster, Artizan and Foundry.
-
Cheers for the clarification. ;)
I think I answered your questions? Say if not. :)
Ooooggghhhh and I love your buildings blogg :-*

The subject of size comparison is always a bit of a thorny one, not potentially embarrassing all round lol
Paul's already posted a pic with Empress's Boss Spears alongside my "Tall Stranger" prototype figure for Galloping Major's The Western Range, so I thought I would take a quick, if not very pretty, comparison picture of the same "Tall Stranger" alongside some others from my collection, as my chaps are close in size to the new Empress ones.
I'm trying the attachment route for the picture for the first time, hope I get it right.
Left to right: Foundry by the more than estimable Mark Copplestone, I thought these were small when they came out in the mid 90s, even alongside other Foundry ranges at the time, but they were so superbly done and such charming little chaps I couldn't resist them. Next, Foundry's next tranche in the distinctive style of Mike Owen - jumping from 25mm to 28mm with aplomb - so when talking about how well other ranges work alongside Foundry's, it's not so clear cut as all that. Then another of mine from the Hired Guns & Hard Cases pack, before ending up again with the Tall Stranger.
Hardly a comprehensive comparison I know, much like Paul, I don't have any Knuckleduster, but from what I had seen elsewhere, I was under the impression that they were actually larger than ours - perhaps mark could help with that one.
Personally, I can live quite happily with different sized figures on a table - to a point, my older Foundry ones might be pushing it just a bit even for me, but you pays your money and takes your choice. As for size of buildings etc, I have found no problems with any of the commercial ranges I've seen, I may have to build a bit higher mountain though lol
So if you're a devotee of the older ranges (somewhere I still have some of those Hinchliffe westerners from the 70s - which were pretty tall compared to most ranges at the time), then you may be put off a tad by the larger of the 28s, but I'm really sure we can keep the peace - as long as I haven't stirred up more disdain from all ends ;) lol
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks Lance. That clarifies things very well.
So onwards and upwards.
Everett Hitch : "Like my father, I'd been West Point, and I was good at soldiering. But soldiering didn't allow for much expansion of the soul. So after the War Between the States and a year of fighting Indians, I turned in my commission and rode away to see how much I could expand it. First time I met Virgil Cole was when I and my eight-gauge backed him up in a showdown he was having with some drunken mountain men. Virgil asked me right there on the spot if I'd care to partner up with him and his peacekeeping business. Which is why I was with him now, and why I still carry the eight-gauge. We'd been keeping the peace together for the last dozen years or so. And as we looked down on a town called Appaloosa, I had no reason to doubt we'd be doing just that for the foreseeable future."
-
Nice picture again indeed.
As I don't have any old Cowboy figures in my metal mountain ,jet to be painted , I am happy with the size of the figures and can't wait to try out my contrast color painting technique on some of them.
-
Thanks Tom. ;)
-
Paul,
I for one am very happy to see that they will match with Black Scorpion. I will be buying some for sure! Are the mounted/dismounted only available as sets? I’d prefer to just buy the foot versions.

William Killian is of a comparable size to Empress moderns.
-
Look like it is going to be an excellent range. And glad to hear some "High Chaparral" figures may be coming down the road.
If you are open to at least listening to requests, I would like to suggest Bob Valdez from "Valdez is Coming", probably my favorite Western. I have neve seen a figure that matches that character well.

Yes as they are set in moulds in sets. However some characters will be only sold in dismounted figures due to their character. For example the Baxter Boys are all dismounted only.

Thanks for that ;) although the terrain comment is a Red Herring as the figures work very well with standard off the shelf 28mm terrain. Check the pictures I have been putting up and you can see the terrain is pretty standard. The wooden stables for example is from Charlie Foxtrot.

Quite, I did not make my second comment/link clear (now edited) - that is a 28mm scale building.

Excellent! Like Mr Weaver, I'd go for a Bob Valdez, McIntosh and Ke-Ni-Tay 8)

If you're going with the High Shrapnel will you be doing Bonanza too?
Or Little House on the Prairie?
-
If you add in F Troop, people could consider Pony Wars in 28mm

Bonanza would be great!!1

Never been a great fan of Bonanza although Hoss was fun and a kinda early Shrek

Open Range was on the telly last night. Damn, that's a good picture.

Brilliant in 'The Wild Bunch' if you could capture this lowlife he'd make a great edition to any shower of Mexicans...

Yeah, the one I mentioned two posts ago. It was on telly last night, you missed it! :)
It's the same film the first two figures in this thread are from. That's Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner.

No love for James Garner? Or Richard Boone?

Open range is one of my favourite modern westerns. Good minis Paul.
Will you be venturing in Spaghetti Westerns or leaving that to the likes of Knuckleduster?
The complete lack of good plains Indians miniatures is a great place to redress, that and the coast of high chaparral!

Maverick is a deep hole to get into as you'll need three versions - Garner, Moore, and Gibson (or four if you include Tom Cruise; that will be a big set if you include his motorbike, never mind the Tomcat).

I had great hopes for this range, but sadly don't like the sculptors style. The same goes with his ECW range. Paul Hicks would have been the perfect choice. I know Mr Hicks is extremely busy and it must be hard to hire him, just I think it would have been worth the wait.
For a range like this to work the figures must facially look like the actors, these just don't cut the mustard for me. I know it's just my opinion and Empress do some excellent ranges but I had to say it.
Please be kind 😂
-
I have to admit (at the time) to having been a fan of the Virginian (however I had forgotten everything about it including Doug McClure).
Now I wonder about Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Harris and James Marsden (and some ultramoderns with P90s)...

Re the Cactus I typed it into Ebay and some popped up. A chap was digitally printing them and they were actually very nice. ;)

Very nice, I have quite a lot of plastic ones waiting to be put together and painted, but none of the big "pointing out the way" types as yet. :)
-
A bit of a preview.
Just checking scale and build for a near future release in our Wild Bunch range.
The horses are not the correct ones and were simply used for scale checks. The ones to be used will be galloping.
Beautiful work on the coach by Richard Humble.

May I add a suggestion to the list of “wouldn’t it be nice to have”.
Most western films have the simple flat buckboard wagon in them. Look so nice to add to my town.
-
Nice, no idea what I would do with it, but nice.
How does it compare in length with the long Renedra bases (230mm x 50mm)?

I was thinking of basing the lead team on a separate round or semi circle base to go round corners.

Gotta like Sgt. Tyree, but it ain't my department.

Jonathan
Yep. And has been is right you gotta like Sgt Tyree. ;)
-
A kind of terrain piece. The logic behind this range is that all relevant characters come both mounted and dismounted. So, for example, your figure Liberty Valance rides into town and dismounts, intent on mischief. He 'parks' his horse and moves on. However you need to mark where he left his horse as he made need to find it in a hurry. Certainly if he was robbing a bank.
So this set comes with a hitching post and two horses plus separate stirrups for you to fix as you wish. The hicthing post comes with a base so is stand alone. You can then place the horses when they are 'parked'. Or you can do as I have done in the picture and base them.
Please note that there are no reins. The ones in the picture have been added by cutting some thin paper. This also allows you to do the old cowboy trick of training your horse to stand still when you dropped the reins. Evidently they tied the reins to rocks until they were trained. So model some horses with the reins hanging straight down.
The models come un painted and unbased and without added tumbleweed.

Excellent idea, no doubt inspired by David Niven's book, 'Bring on
the empty horses'.
Many years ago someone (Connoisseur?) used to do separate ACW
saddles & my 'empty horses' use those, however my supply is sadly
depleted. Yours are tempting.
-
Not read that one. Must. ;)
Read the first one The Moons a Balloon.

Nice, cool idea as well.

Some new releases to our Hollywood inspired western gunfight range.
We thought we needed some civilians so went for these.
Inspired by 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' by Seth MacFarlane we have reproduced four of the main characters for our first civilian pack. Seemed logical to me as its a great film and pokes fun at all the Hollywood and historic western clichés.
Characters are;
Albert the dead loss sheep farmer.
Anna the gorgeous new girl with hidden secrets.
Louise, Alberts ex girlfriend who leaves him for a more suave new
beau.
Foy the new beau with the irresistible moustache.

Hmm. Well done, Paul. Now that I've gone back into the Old West, some civvies would indeed be in order. These may just do at least part of the trick.
I think you have hatched an evil plot to separate me from more of my money, between these and your Vietnam stuff... :D

A new member of our 28mm Hollywood Western cast is Barbarbrosa.
Willie Nelson plays a Notorious outlaw in this horse-riding, pistol-twirling, double-braid-rocking outlaw in this overlooked western from 1982.
Not one of the most famous Westerns, although has become a classic amongst the connoisseurs, but a great and very unusual character to make a figure out of.
An interesting character for any game.

You know that if you have a Willie Nelson figure, you just have to make a figure of an Internal Revenue Service auditor. Every outlaw has their nemesis. ;)

We have a special pre release for the Warfare show.
Our 28mm Wild West Stage Coach including passengers and crew modelled on the 1939 John Ford classic western 'Stage Coach' starring John Wayne.
John Wayne as the Ringo Kid.
John Carradine as Hatfield.
Louise Platt as Lucy Mallory.
Andy Vabre Devine as the driver
George Bancroft riding shotgun
and Thomas Mitchell in his Oscar winning role as Doc Boone.
This will be released properly in the next week or so but as we have a number in stock we are offering them to customers at Warfare for £38.
-
Will you be following up with them on foot? The stagecoach and crew I can see as a display piece but the characters themselves would be quite useful.
