Hello there.
I don't know if LAF can be considered as a support group, but I came here to confess a near pathological obsession for egyptian-fantasy minis (and also non-fantasy egyptian minis but that'd be a different topic for another forum board). I suppose Games Workshop is responsible for my addiction because of their Tomb Kings range. Of course, GW removed those minis from their store (sadly) but the damage is already done and now I compulsively buy too many egyptian-related minis for my own good. Naturally other manufacturers are to blame too, tempting me with all those delicious minis...
Anyway, I thought I'd share some pictures here on LAF because I don't only buy minis, sometimes I also paint them or play with them.

Naturally I have a ton more minis to paint...
-
Lovely figures and scenery with some very subtle painting.
I am also a Bronze age myth/supernatural obsessive.
-
Very nice job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Incredible images. Really nice work. I see you say that you have tons more to paint, but this is off to a great start with the quality brushwork.
I do feel bad for the eunuch skeletons however; they're prolly glad they're dead. lol
-
Crom, such Stygian perils!
-
Great collection of miniatures and terrain.
Do you also have more Wargods of Aegyptus figures to paint?
-
Very nice indeed :-*
-
Brilliant work! I particularly like your tomb robbers and the ghouls. Your style manages to make many of the GW figures I previously was unimpressed with something I now want.
-
Lovely work!
-
Great work. I particularly like the way you paint the metal parts, very vibrant and effective.
-

Welcome aboard! Of course you can consider LAF as a designated support group for any sort of lead addiction or pathological obsessions for any kind of miniatures.
By the way, this entire thread reminds me of a few dozen semi-clad Egyptian ladies in my cupboard who insist to be painted soonest... ::)
-
Cracking photos. Feel free to show us more and what you are working on.
-
Great collection 8)
-
Lovely work on the Dark Fable figures! :-* :-*
And great terrain!
-
Some lovely miniatures and great paint jobs there.

Come on boys, fight! You've nothing to loose but...
well.. you've got nothing to loose.
Wonderful stuff, all of it, but consider the Sphynx
(Dark Blue with light blue edged highlights) a nicked idea.
-
great stuff.
shame about the TK range too - some of their most striking miniatures I thought.
-
Lovely work. Have you seen Fenryll's figures? There's a few figures in their range that would fit in nicely with the theme:
http://fenryll.com/product.php?id_product=562
-
What an inspirational collection! I'm currently working on some Egyptians and Arabs for a Conan-type setting, so loving the ideas here.
I really hope Dark Fable stuff becomes available again: by the time I pulled the trigger on the project, they were no longer for sale.
-
Wow! Thanks everyone! Your comments are much appreciated!
Do you also have more Wargods of Aegyptus figures to paint?
Not a lot unfortunately. I think I have 2-3 unpainted minis from that range + a few accessories. I really want to order more of them but money is a bit tight and there are so many minis I'd like to purchase from various webstores.
Wonderful stuff, all of it, but consider the Sphynx

You are welcome to "steal" the colour scheme. :)
I also have a criosphinx (ram headed sphinx) painted in a similar scheme but green instead of blue (pay no attention to the unpainted minis plz):

Thanks, I didn't know that range. I'll have to take a close look at it later!
I really hope Dark Fable stuff becomes available again: by the time I pulled the trigger on the project, they were no longer for sale.
All I know is that the guy behind Dark Fable said last year he was fighting against cancer. I can only suppose this is the reason his webstore is currently closed (I check everyday or so). I truly hope he gets better and I keep him in my thoughts. :(
-
Sorry to tell you that Mike Burns sadly passed away earlier this year.

Sorry to tell you that Mike Burns sadly passed away earlier this year.
Oh...
I am very saddened by this.
I didn't know Mike personally but I always loved the minis he was selling in his webstore and he was always super nice in the few messages we exchanged. I was really looking forward to his next KS for more egyptian minis and I hoped he would get better. Cancer is a bitch...
May he rest in peace.
-
I have a lot of those same figures in unpainted state and love what you have done with them. I'm especially enamoured with your brushwork on that vampire.
Also a fan of the look of clear bases, which I've used on one of my projects too. I would use it more often if it wasn't such a pain to drill through them.
-
By the way, this entire thread reminds me of a few dozen semi-clad Egyptian ladies in my cupboard who insist to be painted soonest... ::)
Dark Fable - I could offer mine (already based and primered) if somebody needs them desperately (ladies of course - no warriors). This would also help to reduce the lead pile... ;)
PM me if interested!

I dare say Michi is obviously enabling my addiction...
Here a few step-by-step pictures of a room for an egyptian dungeon. For those who wonder, the dungeon tiles are from Lunesdargent Workshop.
Step one: the tiles are 3D-printed by a dear friend of mine who owns a printer. The tiles are tied together by little connectors (which we can't see on the pictures).
Step two: I spray primed the room in pale yellow with a cheap rattle-can. Respiratory protection mask mandatory.
Step three: I covered the whole room with a mixture of brown paint and acrylic medium, making sure to get paint into the grooves and the carved hieroglyphs.
Step four: drybrush the whole thing with beige paint.
Step five: grab a fine brush, some inks and carefully paint the scarab on the floor.
And that's it basically. Maybe I'll add some weathering later but that's optional. The room is ready for a game of dungeon crawling and tomb robbery.

That looks great!
Had a look at your blog some fantastically painted figures and beautiful scenics.
If you do the Facebook I am in a small page called the Annals of Aegyptus minor. The painting and modelling is not to your level. But you may find something of interest.
-
That is a superbly painted collection of lovely miniatures, topped off with great scenery.

That room looks superb!

The Dark Fable range is being transferred to Dragon Bait Miniatures, which is run by a close friend of Mike.
https://www.dragon-bait-minis.com/
Hi Folks,
Today is a somber day for me as I have completed the last few details in acquiring my late friend Mikes company, Dark Fable Miniatures. I can not thank Mikes gracious sister Carla enough for the ease in which she allowed me to continue my close friends miniature legacy. Mike loved what he did and his passion will be truly missed.
My goal is to establish a Dark Fable Miniatures Archive on Dragon Bait Miniatures site (I have no admin access to the old site). Slowly as I physically obtain the lines, I will release them in the totally chaotic manner you've grown to comfortably expect from Dragon Bait. I expect the transition to take a year but individual packs will be available as soon as I receive them.
For those unfamiliar with Dark Fable Miniatures. https://www.darkfableminiatures.com
Any questions of course just fire away.
Joe

Thanks for the comments guys. :)
@SwiftNick: Sadly I am not on Facebook and I don't plan on creating an account there but if I change my mind, I'll definitely take a look at that FB page.
@Sir Barnaby Hammond-Rye: Thanks A LOT for this information. The decease of Dr Mike Burn is a tragic loss, but at least I'm glad to know that someone plans to maintain the DFM range.
-
It all looks wonderful.
-
:o Truly superb! Congratulations.
Um, not willing to highjack anything ;) I take the liberty to share a link about a game played 5 years ago, if it could give more ideas for more inspiration.

Cracking stuff! :D And I liked the tutorial for the rooms or chambers as well!
-
Having recently bought models from both Dark Fable and Dragon Bait I am Very pleased to see the range not only survives but was also purchased by a friend. Joe and Mike seem like great guys from my limited interaction with them. The hobby can be a fragile place when companies that are labours-of-love shut up shop, so good news.
Good luck and thanks for keeping Mike’s legacy going.
Edit. Also those Egyptian dungeons look great. Home printing>sliced bread!
-
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated!
My latest painted mini isn't exactly egyptian-looking but I feel it is generic enough to fit in and it was left unpainted in my pile of lead for far too long:

I took a look at your thread. It looks like it was an awesome game!

Brilliant work, and I think you managed to give it an Egyptian vibe with your color palette.

That sandy base looks great. Care to share your process?
Basically I spread a textured paste from Vallejo (link) (https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/product/hobby/diorama-effects/desert-sand-26217/) on the base. Once dry, I applied a slightly diluted desert yellow paint. Then, I dabbed pigments with an old brush, mostly yellow ochre and burnt sienna, and lastly I glued some grass tufts.
Here is a video tutorial from someone who does it better than me: https://youtu.be/zr8WLA6Heq0 (https://youtu.be/zr8WLA6Heq0)

I agree those are some of the best sandy bases I've seen.
-
Love this thread! You definitely have some nice figures here.
What did you use to paint the skin of the tomb raiders? I've been trying to lock a good paint combo down with little success.

He fits in nicely with the rest of your figures. I'm enjoying checking in on your blog to see what's new. Keep up the good work.

Great painting here and wonderful way to capture the theme.
I am very sorry to read about Dr Mike Burns. I never met him but backed a couple of his KickStarters and always found him friendly and a real pleasure to deal with. Glad to see his work will live on.

Thanks for the comments!

The tomb robbers were painted quite some time ago. At that time, I used a mixture of Ratskin Flesh and Bestigor Flesh (GW) as a base colour, then dipped my minis into Quickshade Strong Tone (Army Painter), matt varnished them, and finally added a few shy highlights.
Now I no longer use Quickshade (too much of a hassle to use as I live in an appartment). I simply start with Ratskin Flesh, followed by a wash of Reikland Fleshshade, then I layer and highlight with diluted Bestigor Flesh and Ungor Flesh.
I just finished painting some Tomb Kings skeleton horsemen this week:

Oh my :-* :-* :-*, your paintjobs are simply superb.
-
They are fantastic!
In my Aegyptus there are no horses. We had a couple of games where chariots just ran everybody over.
Instead of the army painter dip have you tried the coat of arms version. Much less smelly and dries quickly.

Hello, it's been a while since I last posted here.
I was out of inspiration/motivation during november but I eventually took my paintbrush again as I received a challenge (on another forum) to paint a mini.
So here it is: a mummy carrying a seemingly unconscious woman.
Did the mummy abduct her? Did she pass away in tragic circumstances and the mummy is taking her to the tomb? Or is the lady simply too drunk to walk back home after partying too hard? It's up to your imagination. :)

Those are some amazing flesh tones on the lady! How did you paint her?

Thanks for the comments!
Those are some amazing flesh tones on the lady! How did you paint her?
I used GW paint for her skin:
- Ratskin Flesh
- Reikland Flesh Shade
- Ratskin Flesh (again but leaving out the darkest areas)
- Bestigor Flesh
- Ungor Flesh
- Pallid Wych Flesh
I thin the paint a lot and I build the skin tone layer after layer, focusing progressively on the most highlighted areas.
Sometimes I also mix the paints when I'm switching colours to avoid a brutal transition, for example: Ratskin Flesh -> Ratskin flesh + Bestigor Flesh (1:1) -> Bestigor Flesh -> etc.
-
Beautiful transitions on her skin. A great contrast to the mummy. :-*
-
Lovely work!

Exactly what I was thinking.
:)
Stunning!
:-* :-*
-
Again lovely paint jobs. As mentioned her flesh is a masterful piece of work,
but (weirdly) I am drawn to the Mummy's flesh. How did you achieve it?
-
This thread is extremely inspirational. Thanks for the great pictures and the tips. I may try my hand at making bases in the style you described - I really like the results.
One problem with coming to Lead Adventure Forum when you have this kind of problem is that we tend to be enablers. Great work!! Show us more! Have you seen these miniatures?!
Speaking of which, the "Desert of the Dead" Kickstarter, by Troll Trader and Tabletop Games, looks to be shipping soon, so if you didn't back it you should hopefully be able to order figures from their site soon...

P.S. Show us more!
-
Thanks again for the comments fellas.
but (weirdly) I am drawn to the Mummy's flesh. How did you achieve it?
Strange attraction but who am I to judge?
- Basecoat of Skavenblight Dinge (GW) - 2~3 thin coats to get a nice coverage
- A wash of Agrax Earthshade (GW) or any dark brown ink
- Highlights done with Stormvermin Fur (GW)
- Last highlights done by adding some ivory beige paint into the Stormvermin Fur
- I think I added a glaze (a very thinned wash) of sepia to finish it
In contrast to the lady's skin, the colour is a bit dull but then dried mummy skin isn't exactly the most colourful thing to behold.

I know this KS and I am waiting for my pledge to be delivered (soon I hope). Although with the sheer amount of minis that KS will add to my pile of shame, I'll probably have to stop buying minis in 2021 until the mountain of unpainted plastic, metal and resin becomes at least a hill. :-I

I think many of us think that every year... ;D

I think many of us think that every year... ;D
Bur this year it will be different! It will be THE year I will keep true to my good resolutions!
Cue the laugh track.
Anyway, I speed-painted a 3d-printed jackal mummy a friend offered me:

Maybe this will be the last mini I have painted this year (not sure I'll be able to paint another in the next days as I'll be seeing my family). Have a nice christmas party everyone!
-
Great paintjob on a different miniature. The red eye really works!
-
All wrapped up for Christmas.
Great work.
-
That is a neat sculpt. The paint job may be quick but it looks great.
-
That's a really good print and you've done a great paintjob on it, can't believe I've not managed to comment on this thread till now.
-
That's a really nice miniature - amd the paint job does it full justice.
-
Awesome project :-* :-* :-*.
-
Great painting on the jackal 👍
-
Thanks for your kind comments guys! Much appreciated!
-
Nice work, scenery and figures both.
-
That jackal mummy is adorable, great job!

Hi folks, it's been a long time.
I didn't paint as many minis as I planned to do this year, but I still painted a few egyptian ones.
An egyptian Prince from Dark Fable Miniatures (now Dragon Bait Miniatures):
A pair of desert houses (a friend printed them for me) that I also painted:
A bunch of mummies from TTCombat (I received them as part of a KS pledge):
An egyptian banshee (also from TTCombat):
A 3d printed mummy lady from Bombshell miniatures:
One of my project for the coming year is to paint an army of egyptian elves from TTCombat.
Here is a paint test I did on a defective mini* quite some time ago, as I wanted to make a recipe for NMM bronze:
Now I have to get myself together and actually start painting this army for real.
*My pledge contained over 200 resin minis so a few of them were bound to defective. Of course, the manufacturer sent me replacements as soon as I contacted them about it.
Have a great New Year's Eve and see you next year!
-
Great work as usual mate, they all look brilliant.
-
Liking the new additions - but as I hadn’t seen this thread before, I’ve really enjoyed reading / looking at all of it, great minis and fantastic painting. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Very nice brushwork.
-
superb work, may not be as much done as you wanted, but the quality as usual, is great, now got me looking at egyptian elves, oh no, no must not...
-
Some great looking minis and that NMM is effective. Looking forward to seeing the elves.
-
Great project and some lovely figures an scenery :-*
-
Splendid and quirky. I lovei it!
As a PS: it isgood to see that Dark Fable has survived!

Amazing brushwork and a nice haul of eye candy there. WOW! :o

Great project!!
Just curious, but do you know the Aegyptian miniatures of Crocodile games?
-
Somehow I missed this update. Lots of lovely stuff, but that banshee is definitely me favourite. I love what you've done with the limited palette.

fantastic paint-work :-*

Epic! Did you see the Dark Alliance Anubis Army set? Its 1/72 but they are close to 28mm!

I didn't know the Dark Alliance miniatures. Thank for the link!
Great project!!
Just curious, but do you know the Aegyptian miniatures of Crocodile games?
Yes! I have a few of their Wargods of Aegyptus minis, maybe 4 or 5. I have painted 2 so far:

Maybe I will buy it and paint it someday. :)
So. I haven't made a lot of progress in the hobby lately. And I probably won't have the opportunity to paint minis before a week, maybe two, because real life is getting in the way.
So what is currently waiting in my workshop?
1) An assembled jackal monster from a kickstarter (Desert of the Dead) who will be played as a werejackal (basically the egyptian equivalent of a werewolf) in my games of Frostgrave/Sandgrave. A few more preparations (green stuff some bits) and he will be ready to be painted.

2) I also started a conversion for an important character of mine, a magician lady. The original mini is from Reaper Miniatures (Yanara).
My plan is to change her head, her belt ornament, the top of her staff and maybe ad a few more things on the way.
So I started by sawing her head off and sanding down the remaining hair (she still has a small fur on the shoulders).
A quick test to make sure the new head (from Statuesque Miniatures) looks good:
I think it's a perfect fit for my magician/priestess lady specialized in healing spells (she's a thaumaturge in my games of Frostgrave/Sandgrave). I like the softness of her round shaved head.
I had doubts about the piece of fur on her shoulders and upper back. Should I keep it or should I trim it and sand it down completely? After some thinking, I decided I will keep it and paint it as a special garment, a piece of leopard fur, to show that she is not a mere novice of her temple but a high priestess.
From now on, I have to:
- drill and glue the head to the body
- re-sculpt the piece of fur with some green stuff (it has been predictably damaged when I sanded down the hair left for the previous head)
- cut off the top of her staff and find a more suited replacement, something more egyptian looking
- shave the belt ornament (currently some kind of winged skull) and replace it with an ankh cross
I'll post again when I have finished the conversion (hopefully soon). ;)
-
Any progress is good progress :)

That head looks so much better.

The Egg is right. :)

I concur - looks better than the original. Looking forward to seeing her finished

That looks a perfect fit.

Really cool thread, enjoying the theme, conversions and high quality paint jobs.
-
Good call on the new head, looks great!
-
Thanks for the kind comments. :)
I haven't finished my conversion yet. Sculpting green stuff is quite intimidating and I am afraid of messing it up.
But I finally started painting again.
1) A 3D printed tabaxi (i.e. a fantasy race of feline people in D&D) who is exploring the desert:
2) I speed-painted a bunch of cultists from Reaper Miniatures. They will serve as death-worshipping cultists in my games of egyptian-frostgrave (aka Sandgrave; yes I know, the name is vastly unoriginal).
3) A soldier for my Sandgrave warband. The miniature is from Crocodile Games:

And that's it for now!
-
gah !! more 'speed-paints' which look bloomin' amazing to me :-[ :-*
-
Lovely paint jobs, I particularly like the Croc mini.
If you're not too fussed about Sandgrave you could go with...Nilegrave...
-
Really like the red shields on the skellies,
& the way they go from very dark to a
nice bright red. :-*
-
They all look superb, but I especially love what you've done with the Reaper cultists. I've looked at those miniatures before but haven't been too impressed with them. This makes me look again!

Thanks for the comments, guys! Much appreciated!

In this latest batch, only the cultists were speedpainted. It took me one session (~2 hours) to colour all 6 of them whereas the tabaxi adventurer and the axe warrior took me 2 and 3 sessions respectively.

Nah I've been calling it "sandgrave" for a few years, I'm not going to change that now. ;)

Yes and I am really enthusiastic about them! I hope that they will correct the position of the quiver for the archers (as some people already told them in the comments). Once they get released, I am sure to buy a box of them or two.

Small update: a thaumaturge apprentice for my Sandgrave warband (model from Reaper Miniatures).
The model had a tiara originally but I cut it off because I wanted to make her look a little less fancy since she is "only" an apprentice, not a high priestess or a princess.
Of course, it is only after I varnished and photographed the mini that I realized I forgot to paint the tiny armband on her left arm... >:(
Oh well. Like they say: "if you forgot it then it wasn't important."

Gorgeous work mate!
-
All of that work looks amazing! It makes me really curious - do those reaper cultists match height wise with oathmark/frost grave minis, or are the more in the 30/32mm scale of things?
(Reaper, from what i remember, is a bit all over the place scale wise- so I don't know what these might end up being!)
-
Wow, this is going to me my new favorite thread! I too suffer from the same fascination and obsession with all things ancient Egyptian.
Dan

Lovely crisp painting.
-
lovely paint job.
as regards the 'speed paint' comment above- yep, I was aware you were referring to the reaper cultists only - and they look fantastic to me.
-
Thanks for the kind comments fellows!

I shot two picture of cultists along with some Frostgrave minis:

The cultists are slightly taller but I don't think the difference is too bad.

Hi folks!
Slight update with a Frostgrave Sandgrave knight from Reaper Miniatures (https://www.reapermini.com/miniatures/02610):

Only thing left to do is varnish the mini before glueing it on its base. Definitely not my best mini but at least it's done.
-
Definitely not my best mini
Well I like it.

I already know about this KS campaign (but thanks for the heads up anyway!) however I'm going to pass on it because I can't really afford to spend money in the hobby at the moment.

Beautiful work on the conversion and painting! That’s a great looking war band all around.

Outstanding! :-*

Amazing

Amazing work,fantastic! :-*

That warband looks superb. I really like the turquoise on Yanara: it's different from the royal blue that I normally associate with egyptian stuff, but works really well.

This is a wonderful paintjob on a fantastic conversion of an already great sculpt. I hardly found another model which I considered as perfect to suit my search for a proper female necromancer for my own Frostgrave band:

@Michi: Your minis are absolutely gorgeous! Maybe just a little underclothed for Felstad's climate. lol

Wot ee said!
I love this thread.

This is an incredible project. I started a "Sandgrave" project too, kit bashing Ghost Archipelago tribals, but I might as well retire them. I'm thinking of doing a 15mm version using not-Conan miniatures from Crom's Anvil.
-
Such a lovely thread and so much inspirational work do keep 'em coming.
Would like to see more of them in game.
-
Thanks Philhelm and Golgotha!
It's been a while since I last posted here. I haven't made a lot of progress since then. But there is still a model that I forgot to post here.
Here is the archenemy of my Sandgrave campaign directly inspired by the Thaw of the Lich Lord: the Faceless Queen, a powerful lich-mummy. She was basically the final boss who showed up for the last scenario. Some of you may recognize her: the model is from Reaper Miniatures.

I still have pictures of the last scenarios of the campaign to shoot (re-shoot actually, a lot of the first pictures turned out to be too crappy to be presentable). I'll make sure to post some of those here.

Such gorgeous work! 👏🏻

Wow, what a great project! I really like this style, your painted figures and conversions.

Wonderful project. Your painting is exceptional.
