I have two Reaper Spirits of the Forest (Bones version) and wanted to convert one into a more slender Tolkienesque Ent.
Long story short, I kept the head and parts of the torso, but extended the arms and legs.
So far I roughed out the volumes with a 2:1 mix Milliput to Greenstuff. Next up refinement and textures. I will add some more volume with a mix of filler and acrylic medium, as it is easier to carve than the pretty tough Milliput mix.
I will place a mushroom man on his palm and some smaller ones riding along in the cavity in his chest, while he leans on a staff made of burned wood in his other hand. Idea being he would not use a living tree, but a casualty of a thunder storm.
First I drilled some holes in his torso and attached some wire with greenstuff.

Second step is adding volume with the Milliput mix and some finer branches to the head. I also adjusted his pose.

That’s looking good :)
-
Nice start :)
-
Amazing and very creative! I'll follow with interest! :)
-
Next step: Cover the basic shape with filler (adding 25% acrylic medium, let dry and carve the bark texture. I could have carved it into the Milliput, but it was too strenuous when fully cured.

Finished most parts of the body last night. Now I need to sculpt the face and hands.

Great progress! The bark looks very realistic! Will you be weathering the finished ent with moss and lichen and some such?
-
Awesome.
-
I'm very enthusiastic about where this is going :D
great job!
-
He looks cool...if a little spiky :D Looking forward to seeing more.

Thank you! Yes, I thought of adding tree-dwelling mushrooms, ranking ivy (as hair), some soil clinging to his roots and a bird's nest in his crown.
Awesome.
Much obliged!

;) Thank you!

Thanks! I think the spikes will be less pronounced when he is finished (I will cover all the wire with acrylic medium). usually this prevents horrible accidents picking the miniature up while keeping it flexible to prevent damage.
I finished the remaining bark texture and last night got around sculpting the face. I will add a mossy beard, but so far I am quite pleased. He looks a bit like Beaker with a pointy nose.

The idea was to make him look a bit whimsical. Given I intend to place a smirking mushroom on his palm, that should work well. There are enough grimdark miniatures around already.
-
:D Are you gunna given him autumnal leaves?
His face looks great, I like the hook nose.

Yes, I thought of autumnal maple.

Nice.

I am watching progress with interest. It looks great so far, and I love the "basically realistic with a bit of whimsy" feel! I look forward to the next update!

Perhaps have squirrels and other cutesy animals on the branches?
If it's a (sugar)maple you might add a tap and a bucket collecting sap for maple syrup ???

I will definitely add some critters. I am out of squirrels, but want to add a raven and hare. Maybe a butterfly. I think I will keep it at a medium whimsy level, not going too far into "fairy tale". I thought more of Labyrinth or Neverending Story.
-
I did some experiments with wool, moss and coconut fiber to fashion a moss beard. I think I will add some more volume, but overall it looks fine. Painting will be done via airbrush.
I also finished his fingers. Apart from the beard I only need to add some ranking ivy, maybe some more mushrooms and I can start painting.

He's coming along nicely!
Somewhere around here I have two (maybe three?) tall thin Ents I started sculpting from scratch at least five years ago and haven't finished. I should excavate them and slot them back into the queue...
-
Wonderful work so far. Looking forward to the next update!

Oh, exciting. Would love to the the WIPs.
Wonderful work so far. Looking forward to the next update!
Thank you and as you wish:
I think the body is now ready to paint. Staff, critters etc. will be added later.

crikey - easily one of the best Ent figures I've seen - if not the best.

Much obliged and high praise indeed. I am thinking of making a second smaller one that looks more like a beech, however, entirely scratch built.
-
Started with the mushroom man last night. He will go on the outstretched hand.
-
Finished the outer parts of the cap, the arms and the hands. Only the gills are missing. I also changed the hand position, so that he looks like paying allegiance. Reference for the cap was Marasmius oreades.
-
The mushroom man is finished, but will be based individually.
The Ent is also coming along. I added a spell effect, which I felt works better in a variety of contexts.

Last pictures before I start painting the Ent. I finished the base and added the driftwood staff.
Airbrushing shall commence on the weekend.
-
I can't find proper words to even begin to state how awesome is this :-* :-*
-
Thank you for your kind words. Glad you like it. Definitely will make a few smaller ones, too.

Awesome work! Not at all cute, in fact he looks rather severe and intimidating, almost brooding in some of those photos. The final effect will depend a lot on your paint job and I am really interested to see where you take it.
-
OUTSTANDING! Your Ent & Associates are just as BEAUTIFULLYcrafted here as on the Reaper Forum!
-
Thank you all for the encouraging comments. I managed to start painting last night. Base colours established, now onto detailing.
-
Great progress 8)

as DN says - outstanding.
wonderful work on the face especially.

Thank you! Yes, the face is coming along nicely. I will tackle the tree dwelling mushrooms next.
-
The moss beard is a wonderful feature. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
This is just fantastic. Can't wait to see the finished model.
-
Upped the contrast significantly, using a nice violet green shadow colour and placed some highlights to guide the eye. I also painted the mushrooms. Chicken of the Woods and some oyster mushrooms.
Next I need to glaze the highlights in some and the main body is finished. I may revisit it in the end, when foliage is added.
-
Simply amazing!
-
Impressive work! I like specially the rocky spell effect
-
Absolutely fantastic :o
-
Incredible and that’s only this far into the paint job....
-
Superb stuff and painting !!!

Nice work on that Ent.
-
Thank you all! Glad you like the progress so far.
I did add some foliage, the base is almost finished and the rock spell effect painted. I might magnetise it, then I can swap it out. I will paint the foliage next to increase contrast. So maybe a glaze to up the saturation. I love the detailing MiniNatur nets provide, but they need some finishing touches to really shine.
I also tried my hand at some bracket fungi. Really hard to get striations to show at that scale.

As someone was asking, here the recipe for painting the bark:
I started with the airbrush: Vallejo air Dark Earth with a bit of London Grey, followed by a lighter misting with Vallejo Air Sand Yellow with a bit of RMP Bleached Bone.
I covered all of this with a dilute wash of Kimera Colours Carbon Black, Red Oxide and Yellow Oxide. Basically a very dark brown, almost a chromatic black. After this I went back in with VA Sand Yellow, to emphasise the bark texture. This was again glaze consistency, followed by almost pure Bleached Bone, just for some spotlights.
Next up defining the shadows: I mixed Kimera Colours Violet with Carbon Black with a hint of Phtalo Green to achieve a nice dark violet. I applied this to the darkest parts of the miniature, heavily diluted, feathering the edges out with a moist brush.
The last step was a gentle wash with AK Interactive Enamel paint: Slimy Green. Just to add a bit of green and simulate light moss deposits.
Towards the roots I applied it heavier (and might apply some more, to really achieve a mossy look).
-
The Ent is finished. However, still need to add a squirrel and options for his hand. I might give the foliage a final brown misting, but I have to see.
Next up a small frog man and a mini Myconid.
-
Absolutely fantastic :-*
-
Extraordinary!
-
Excellent 8)

Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Love the fungi
-
The best ent I have ever seen!
-
That looks fantastic, one of the best treepersons I've seen.
Looking forward to seeing what you do by way of modular stuff in his hand, but the floating rocks look great.
-
Thank you all for commenting. Great motivator, especially when there is a toddler in the house and some evenings Netflix seems like less effort.
I am now wondering if I should try out oak foliage instead of maple. Would go more into reddish brown. As the foliage is not fixed in place yet, might be worth a try.
I also started with the frog man and mini Myconid. The latters hat I might invert.
-
I made good progress with the toad. The combination of micro beads, poppy seeds and super glue applicator tube produced a really nice warty skin texture.
-
From your inspiration, with far inferior sculpting skills, I could make this (Oathmark goblin for scale):
Its my second sculpt (the stone golem next to it was the first), and I learned a lot... The paint is just a basecoat with a quick (and too heavy) drybrush, just to control the texture (I made it with a piece of bark). I hope, that with a lot of green stuff (not greenstuff) and a decent paintjob, I can make it not-that-horrible.
-
Nice sculpting.
-
Both sculpts are fantastic - even more so as they are your first two attempts. Kudos.
-
Thanks!
Its almost ready painted now, it looks much better. I will post it, when its ready.
