Lakshmi Bai the Rhani of Jhansi. 1828 - 1858
JUST RELEASED.
At the start of the Mutiny she offered to raise an independent force to support the British which was duly agreed. On the 6th June 1854 the 12th Bengal Infantry mutinied in Jhansi and after killing their officers turned their anger on the Europeans in Jhansi Fort. Following a siege they agreed terms and surrendered and 30 men, 16 women and 20 children were promptly murdered. There is no evidence to suggest the Rhani had anything to do with this but the British believed she was.
Following attempts to persuade the British of her innocence she raised an army in defence of Jhansi the richest Hindoo city in India. Two neighbouring rulers saw this as an opportunity to take the state but she showed significant military skill in defeating them. Her army grew in size and the British saw her as a serious threat and a force under Sir Hugh Rose was sent to defeat her. Following a siege she escaped with some of her followers but was chased and nearly captured.
Joining the forces of Rao Sahib she attacked the British but was defeated. Next she turned on the loyal to the British Maharajah of Sindhia whose forces deserted him and Gwalior was captured and looted. The Rhani taking ownership of the fabled pearl necklace which our figure is wearing.
However the British forces under Rose tracked her forces down and attacked. Surprised when a detachment of the 8th Hussars attacked her camp she is reported to have mounted and armed with two swords and supported by her maid/ bodyguard fought back but was mortally wounded, the maid killed. Several days later the 8th Hussars interrupted the cremation ceremony.
Certainly one of the more unusual characters from the Mutiny the Rhani makes a splendid leader to your Indian Mutineers who fought not just the British but other Indian armies.

One of the staff officer figures Hicks made was hinted to be based on a certain well-known fictional character.

Just to confirm there is NOT a figure in the range that is based on Flashman.
But there no doubt will be in the future. ;)

One of the attractive aspects of the Indian Mutiny range is that Mike and Paul produced a couple of dozen British staff officers. These would be perfect for a role-playing adventure game set in the period, even if one didn't want to full-on game the Mutiny itself.
And of course, a little green stuff could transform those officers, according to the gamer's taste.
Does anyone know a set of skirmish / rpg rules for Victorian India? - Damsels to be rescued. Espionage to be done. Perhaps even a daring raid to arrest a subversive fakir.....

Todays release is four sets of Victorian civilians designed primarily for our Indian Mutiny range although some figures will work for other conflicts such as the First Maori War and American Civil war.
28mm and sculpted by Paul Hicks, as is the entire Indian Mutiny range.

Oh those are wonderful. I can personally see a use for those four in the second pic. Nothing about them specifically shouts 'India!' Reckon they'd do for DA explorer types or adventurers for this slightly earlier period. A couple of potential Young Quatermains there.
Can't believe I missed that post from 2020. That's a nice set, too. I believe the modern English spelling is Rani, not Rhani, by the way. Back in the day Ranee would have probably been most common.

I seem to have missed this in the pre Christmas rush so as an update.
Some Indian regiments had a small number of riflemen attached. Armed with Brunswick rifles these soldiers were trained in light infantry tactics and sniping. Just add these chaps to your standard muskets armed line units to act as skirmishers.
They would have served on both sides depending on the loyalty of the parent unit so the pack is in both the British and Mutineer rooms.
