Title: Bir Hakeim
Post by: tancrede on December 02, 2020, 12:33:31 PM
After painting some minis for France and for the Battle of the Bulge, it's now time for my pal and me to head south.
Winter is coming, and we need sun and heat ! ^^

So here is our new project : the battle of Bir Hakeim and some fightings in North Africa.
Just as for the "Bulge project", my friend will do the battlefield (always with only one hand), and I will built and paint minis.
And we both have chosen our army : he will play Free French (based upon Foreign Legion), and I will play Italians (mainly regular infantry). So you can expect a lot of weird vehicles in a near future !  :D

First minis are for my friend, as mine are still on the way between England and France (I've bought some minis from the Perry's and from Empress).

To begin, I've done a test mini for infantry. The base is a plastic 8th Army kit from Warlord Games, with a printed head from JJG Prints.
Not sure on the backpack, but my friend wanted the boys to have some...

Second mini is the Dodge Tanake from the Perry Miniatures range.
This vehicle was really nice to build and paint, and I'm happy with the result (color scheme was chosen by my friend, and I was happy he didn't chose something more exotic !  :D ) :

It's enough for today, but stay tuned as this project will be running for many months !

It will be very nice to see another Bir Hakeim project on this forum.
Hope to see it soon ! ;)

French with their weird vehicles & weirder camo schemes...
What's not to like?

Yes, sir !
And desert war was a great provider of stolen vehicles and weird véhicules modifications, from all the nations involved (for example, the 102mm navy guns on trucks by the Italians, or the Breda 20mm AA guns mounted on the trucks of the LRDG).
The armoured trucks are an heritage of the Spanish Civil War. Not as efficient as a real armoured vehicle, but they were cheap and simple enough to be built on the battlefield.
And the Free French must have to fight with everything they could find, as they have no help at the beginning...

But the camo scheme could be weirder :

I know !
Your project for French in Syria is one of my favorite ! ^^

That is a weird vehicle!  :o Never seen that one before. Great work on all your painting

It's really a nice vehicle, but only a few were built and used, by Free French and the Vichy army (mainly in Syra or Lebanon for them).
For example, this one is in a museum in Damas (don't know if it was still here) :

If your doing a Bir Hakeim project will it include a Susan Travers figure?

Her Biography is interesting reading.

@draxx66 :
As it's not my army, I don't know.
But it's sure that Susan Travers was a great woman !

For today, I have finished the 2 trucks with 75mm portee
They were converted to look more like the original one (as the only suitable model I've found is the Minairon one, but it's out of stock for a long time now) :

So here is my own versions, using Chevrolet 30 CWT from Rubicon model, 75mm guns from Perry Miniatures and some heads from JJG Prints :

Next is a 47mm AT gun from Warlord Games, but manned by legionnaries from Perry Miniatures, still WIP :

And last are the first minis for my Italians (again, Perry Miniatures models) :

Thanks, guys !

I'm looking at up-scaling a 1/100 3D printed Ford/Chev 3t GS for my Portee.
Yes, it can be the solution, but I'm not on 3D design/printing, and you will have to add tons of details for a 1/56 scale model.
So I work in the old ways, and I've done some minor conversions.

I've received some minis from Empress yesterday, so I know have to paint my Italians.
And I must finish converting the french legionnaries with all the heads received from JJG Prints.

What else can I add that hasn't already been said?

Superb looking paint jobs, unusual vehicle, great conversions and a really interesting period to be modelling. I have long wanted to do something for Syria 1941, but was stuck on the French, so your post has given me some inspiration, especially as I had not come across JJG Prints before.  Will check out the heads!

Thans for comments, guys.

especially as I had not come across JJG Prints before.  Will check out the heads!

JJG Prints have a really good choice of heads, and they fit perfectly with WG or Artizan minis.
If you want other size, you can just ask Jean-Jacques.

For the legionnaries, we had some exchanges on the size of the heads, as WG metal minis are smaller than the plastic 8th Army minis.
But finally, I've decided to go with the standard size.

These are great to see and as others have said, beautifully painted. I did the masters for a number of the French and Italian vehicles for Perry Miniatures, so am always on the lookout to see them being used as I know they're not the most popular armies to collect.

The Tanake was one of my earlier models and I'm glad you're happy with it as I think i'd build the master differently second time around. I hope to see at least a Pavesi in the Italians and possibly the 90/53 Autocannone as these two have to be my favourites. Michael Perry does have the masters to build a truck-bodied Lancia but might need some more persuasion to issue that model, I think his focus is currently elsewhere!

All the best,

John

It's an honor to see you here, sir.
The Tanake was really a very nice model to build and paint, and you've done a great job on this "sexy" vehicle.

Currently I have a TL37 on the desk for my 75mm artillery gun, and the 90/53 Autocannone will certainly be added to the army in the near future as I love this big boy. The Pavesi is nice, but it's an heavy artillery tractor, and I will not field heavy artillery...
But an AS37 with 20mm Breda gun can be a good variant of the traditionnal AS42 Sahariana (I love this model, and I will paint one soon, but it's a little to late for Bir Hakeim).

It's a sad news to here that the Perry brothers have a master for the Lancia truck, as the 2 Company B models were really a pain in the a*s to build. But they are certainly on another project, as they both are passionnate guys and jump from a project to another one. And as you said, french and italian forces are sexy with all their weird vehicles, but not the most popular.

And if you like to model weird french vehicles, I'm currently looking for some modern french commando vehicles in 28mm (SHERPA, Panhard VPS, ACMAT...)  ;) :D

Thanks guys !

You have really captured the red earth dust... what paint color are you using?

Base color is GW XV88, but you can use PA english uniform or Vallejo Leather brown.

Then I use watered red ochre pigments, and give a thin coat on the whole base. You can rework it by adding more pigments if you want (here, for example, on a dark brown base):

Last thing is to drybrush the base with a bone color, and paint the side of the base.
Very simple and fast (except for the pigments to dry).

Thank you, guys !

For today, a little M13/40 from Rubicon Models (always a joy to build and paint) :

WW2 by tancrede, eh? That I have to see. :) And it didn't disappoint.

.) great choice of forces
.) interesting theatre of war
.) Lovely conversions and painting. Love the reddish shading/dust on the French vehicles. I have my own struggle with 1/56th scaled vehicles with 28mm infantry, but I have to say that I got a bit interested again when Rubicon announced their M13/40 kit a while ago. And I don't even have Italians in 28mm!

Anyway, great job, I'm looking forward to seeing more. Which rules are you playing with those figures?

@Sigur :
I'm running with 1/56 vehicles, as it's the way it's played in my gaming club. But for modern warfare, I'm using 1/50 vehicles, and it's far better.

This Bir Hakeim project is for Bolt Action.

For this time, it was painted without airbrush. The model is 3D printed, but as it was a 15/20mm model, it's not as finely detailed as I want my models to be. But on the battlefield, it will do the job :

Yes, it can be the solution, but I'm not on 3D design/printing, and you will have to add tons of details for a 1/56 scale model.
So I work in the old ways, and I've done some minor conversions.

I've received some minis from Empress yesterday, so I know have to paint my Italians.
And I must finish converting the french legionnaries with all the heads received from JJG Prints.

Hi Tancrede,

First off, very attractive painting and modelling. I like your style.

About these heads at JJG Prints, they fit well on Perry bodies? What is the quality of the resin? I have heard of using metal heads on plastic bodies but wonder out loud if resin heads degrade over time and with handling.

Post by: tancrede on August 29, 2022, 08:20:39 AM
I have not tried to fit them on Perry bodies, but as you can scale them down I think it's not a problem (I've asked JJG to print me some at 100% and some at 90% of normal size to fit on "real" 1/56 minis). As WG models are bulkier than the Perry ones, I will try a 90/95 % size...

Resin is good, but a little fragile (especially on thin pieces like the barrels of guns).
Just ask JJG boss. He's a nice guy, and will answer all your qestions.
