Title: Painting Competition | Giants in Miniature Five-Year Anniversary
Post by: WargamesIllustrated on December 08, 2020, 10:08:39 AM
Our Giants in Miniature range was launched half a decade ago and we are celebrating with an epic painting competition!

We want to see your painted Giants in Miniature! We’ve created a range of categories, along with varied judging criteria, to ensure painters of all levels can get involved. You could win glory and fame in the pages of Wi, along with some fine prizes.

You can enter as many miniatures and/or scenes as you’d like; each entry will have a chance of winning the Main Category it is entered into, and we will fit it into Sub-Categories that are applicable. In that way even the less experienced entrants may be rewarded for their exciting entries!

Prizes include

- £100 North Star Voucher (https://www.northstarfigures.com/)
- Be a Giant in Miniature – Your likeness, sculpted to fit whatever period and army you prefer, will be released as a GiM!
- 10 copies of your GiM.
- A Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR Plus 2-in-1 Airbrush.
- A Broken Toad Mk3 Brush Set
- One year Wi Print and Prime subscription
- Choice of ten GiM
AND MORE!

I was tempted, but since I'd already painted some of them for Wargames Illustrated, I figured it wasn't in the spirit of the competition! Good luck to everyone, I look forward to seeing the entries.

I read it in the magazine and mi' first charitable thought was

'An ordinary brush mechanic's got a snowball's chance in hell of winning owt here!'

But, now that Mr. Cubbins has done the honourable thing, we mere mortals might be in with a shout!

:)

Haven't heard anything myself... Was wondering if they had quietly called it off.

I believe the closing date for submission has been extended because of the plague?

???

Aye (and that caught me off guard since I could have prepped another figure, if I knew), but it is still passed by quite some time. Moving the closing date and then not knowing anything is what led me to think that they have quietly called it off since, probably, they did no have enough submissions of decent quality?

I posted a question here, asking if the results were announced.

It didn't seem to register.

Got to admit the silence is pretty deafening from WI Magazine. It'd be a tad naive to think none of their staff's gormed this thread.

I saw a post on Instagram that indicated the entrants were going to be posted in the May issue of Wargames Illustrated (unless I misunderstood it).

You may have seen this already but it does say there will be a gallery of entries in next month's issue:

I had a go at a couple and it will be fun to see if any of them made it into print!

Certainly was, I was expecting several pages of superb miniatures to drool over. In my 'umble opinion WI Magazine really missed a trick with this one. The majority of the Giants in Miniature range are superb, they should have really bigged 'em up!

I don't understand why they did not make a FB gallery with the entries. Especially given that there should be a "reader's choice" and that the page you are supposed to go to in order to vote that returns a 404

Just had an e-mail from WI to say that I won runner-up in the Best Unit/Scenic category.   :)

Well excited, I can't remember the last time I won a prize in a competition!   ;D

Well done Lord Snapcase! May I ask whether your entry was featured in the printed magazine?

It was an slightly odd feature. I expected the winner of each category to be shown along with each of the four runners up, plus a selection of notable other entries. Seeing as the magazine encouraged painters of all ability levels to contribute I was hoping to see a wide variety of interpretations of each figure,  which would be interesting even if not every one was a masterpiece. Instead there was a fairly small selection of figures consisting of the winner of each category plus occasionally an extra figure (and it was not always clear whether these extra figures were prize-winning "runners up" or just non-winning entries that the judges nontheless liked. Hopefully we will see more of this in later issues, and I hope that the readers choice will eventually go ahead.

I was runner up in the Stars of the Silver Screen category. My email didn’t say which of my figures was placed, as I entered two. I’m still waiting for my prize.

Sorry Bearwoodman, only just seen this. No, my photo was not in the magazine. My painted GiM was Lord Flashheart in a group with Blackadder etc. There was some mention of an on-line gallery with all the prize-winners on it but I have yet to find it.

Well done, THE CID. My choice of three GiMs arrived a couple of days ago and also an e-mail regarding three free months of the on-line magazine, so I imagine yours can't be far behind.

I didn't win anything so will never buy that magazine again... ever!
That I was beaten fair and square by lesser brush-mechanics, is an intolerable insult from the shower at WI, to whom I'd recommend a visit to Specsavers. From now on I'm sticking to mi' old mantra...

"Better to cheat and lose than play fair and win."

Not that I'm a twitter and blisted sore loser or anything.

Well done Dr Mathias! That is a very well painted example of an interesting figure. In fact I submitted an attempt at that figure too, although not quite to the same standard. It was interesting to see the different colours you chose for her clothes as this figure in particular, not being in uniform or armour, was open to many possible interpretations. I would have liked to have seen more entries shown in print and online for this reason.

Exactly, I'd like to see more entries as well. I'm under an impression that there was in fact quite a lot of submissions.

Looks like I dodged a bullet there by not entering the contest. The standard seems ... worryingly high!
