Title: World War of the Roses - May 22 & 23 - results and next year....
Post by: Winston on December 10, 2020, 06:53:34 PM
Hello everyone,

Some of you might be interested in this simple painting/gaming challenge I've developed along with fellow WotR 'enthusiasts' Raglan and Paul Baldwin.

'World War of the Roses' has a simple aim: get as many people as possible, wherever they are in the world, painting WotR minis and then to game with them simultaneously on the weekend of May 22 and 23 2021.

It's an attempt to inspire people to (hopefully) come out of lockdown fighting (gaming) and making the most of some of the remote relationships/skills we've all had to build over the last few months.

Here's how to take part;

1. Pick a side - Yorkist or Lancastrian, and paint WotR miniatures. Post pictures of them on social media, or here. If on social use the hashtag #worldwarroses.

2. If you can, organise a game for May 22 or 23 and tell us about it on social - search the hashtag to find us or see my feed on Instagram and Twitter @winston_ab_rees

3. Play the game on the day(s) - and join our group Zoom chats at the start and end of the weekend. At the end of the last game on the Sunday we'll total up 'scores' for Lancastrian and Yorkists winners across all the games to declare an overall 'winner' - York or Lancaster.

There is also a competition!

Early in the new year we'll announce details of a vignette painting competition - the winner will be announced ahead of the weekend and will get a decent prize of WotR minis. Exact amount/details of how to enter to be announced in January.

We don't mind what rules you want to play with - small imaginary scenario games with the likes of 'Billhooks' welcome - all the way up to whopping 1,000-figure+ refights.

Some people might want to pick a particular battle - the three of us are playing a 1,000-figure St Albans I re-fight.

We've already had lots of people taking part and six games are confirmed for May 22 23 already in Wales, UK, the US, Australia, Canada and Spain - but we want more!

Thank you for your support - and keep an eye on this thread for pics, updates and painting tips.

Winston

Some beautiful War of the Roses battle photos to wet your appetite. These are from the collection of my friend Danny Watts, some were painted by yours truly.

An excellent idea Winston. It should inspire a lot of people to get off their respective 'painting' bums and has the potential to draw in a few more wargamers who are not 'into' the Wars of the Roses too- though Billhooks has certainly achieved that already! I believe it can a very respectable three in the Best rules 2020 WI awards and well deserved.  8)

I have two display games in the planning for next year (re: late next year) and have committed to both and don't want to let my partners in crime down by overstretching and not quite getting the requisite painting done or I would enter the 'comp' at a pinch.

I wish you all the best of luck and look forward to seeing the games next year  8)

I have a bunch of Yorkists already.  I'll add some Lancastrians for this.  And try to find an opponent for a game come May.

A fine idea, thanks for posting this. This will certainly help spur me on to finish my Percy retinue. I'll also keep an eye out for the vignette competition in the new year.

Good idea, but I've painted most of my WotR minis already, can't wargame at weekends and can't zoom, but I will try and play a game around about those dates and post a few pics if I remember.  :)

There I was, minding my own business with all my Christmas hobby projects planned and procured.
And then this lovely distraction comes along, and so now I have a new period to enjoy...

I suppose I could try and jump in with a Speed Painted Burgundian faction- perhaps a small 'test the water' invasion force of a kind?

True. Got to find the time. It's the time span of history that I'm most passionate about so it would be a bit daft for me to sit it out lol

Chastity is illegal? Well, good idea, I suppose.

That aside, I've got 10mm WOTR plans, but as supplementary stuff for Kingmaker. I'll see if I can arrange things to fit the broader timetable here, which is a lovely idea.

Some of the pictures I have seen on here put my plans to shame, both in size and standard.
However I will join in with this plan now that I have finally got some painting done. My collection is rather small compared to some but will slowly increase hopefully.

Here is a taster, with a couple more pictures on my blog (https://welshwargamesdevon.blogspot.com/blog).

Great stuff everyone. We've had more people taking part/hashtagging than I count recently and big thank-you to all who have taken part.

We'll open the vignette competition next week - Monday 15th Feb - more details on criteria/how to enter then.

Also, the prize has been confirmed... ....and it's really flipping good! Eyes peeled next week. I'll post details here and it'll be all over Twitter, Instagram and YouTube via me (@winston_ab_rees) and my esteemed colleagues in WotR/#WorldWarRoses, Raglan and Paul Baldwin.

Title: Re: World War of the Roses - VIGNETTE PAINTING COMPETITION THREAD
Post by: Winston on February 15, 2021, 07:37:53 PM
Hi all - this competition is now open! - with an amazing prize. Entries can be posted on this thread or Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #WWRVignette . No Facebook entries. Here's all the details - simply reply from here with your entries by 8pm GMT Sunday 28 March.

Video explainer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ePmZrRPjPU

And full details;

ABOUT #WorldWarRoses
Run by a group of like-minded UK-based wargamers, #WorldWarRoses is quite simply a call for hobbyists to paint as many WotR minis as possible and post them online using the hashtag #WorldWarRoses. We then want as many people as possible to play WotR games, wherever they are in the world, on the weekend of May 22 and 23 2021, and post about them! On the weekend itself the organising team will run a group Zoom call and keep score from the games across the world for the houses of York and Lancaster. (But use any scale/rule system you like)

ABOUT THE VIGNETTE PAINTING COMPETITION
To encourage #WorldWarRoses players to get creative, we've devised an online painting contest. We want people to create, paint and enter Wars of the Roses mini wargaming vignettes. One lucky winner, judged to have made the best entry will win a real-life prize worth more than £200 (approx $300 US). Entries open on February 15 2021 and CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS 8pm GMT on Sunday March 28 2021. NO EXCEPTIONS and please check your timezone! Only open to Wars of the Roses vignettes! The competition is free and open to enter from anywhere in the world.

WHAT COUNTS AS A VIGNETTE?
A vignette is a small collection of miniatures together on a single that make a characterful scene. Like a command stand, or a symbolic/interesting moment - a fallen knight defending a dying horse, some mercenaries stopping to take a drink of ale, a few men at prayer with a friar before battle... you get the idea. Note a vignette is not what we'd traditionally think of as a unit, it's got more character/narrative/obvious single purpose than that.

MORE ABOUT THE RULES/WHAT QUALIFIES
To count entries must be two or more Wars of the Roses miniatures on a base not larger than a CD disk if circular or a CD case if square. They can be any scale but must by WotR era and they must have been painted by you specifically for this competition, the vignette must not have been entered in any other previous competition anywhere in the world. The vignette must be playable in a reasonable sense - i.e. you could put it on a table in a game - so big, thick, tall competition-style bases. You can use printed/bought flags but the miniatures themselves must have been painted entirely by you. Livery decals etc are o.k. but we'e more likely to give thumbs-up to minis 100pc hand painted.
You may want to convert, chop, pose and add green stuff/kit bash minis, add discarded weapons etc etc, that's all fine. Historical accuracy is imporant but we're not looking for odd errors - a slightly wrong type of crossbow won't matter for example - but clearly well out of period/obvious fantasy miniatures won't be counted as entries. Only one entry per person/social media account please.

HOW TO ENTER
Simple - create your WotR vignette and either;
1. Post no more than four good photos of it on your Twitter or Instagram account using the hashtag #WWRvignette before the closing date

OR

2. Post no more than four good photos of it on the World War of the Roses thread on the Lead Adventure Forum (in the medieval section - right here below!) before the closing date, clearly stating they are an entry for the World War of the Roses Vignette Painting Competition. If you are not a member of the forum it is free and easy to register.

Do not try to enter in any other way and NO ENTRIES VIA FACEBOOK. They won't be counted. #WorldWarRoses organisers are not regular Facebook users and we don't have the capacity/patience for FB to run a compo page on Facebook.

JUDGING AND WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT
Judging will take place via panel over the Easter Weekend 2021. Judges' decision is final, and we are looking for only one winner, who will be announced on Sunday, April 14 2021 via social media and the #WorldWarRoses and #WWRvignette hashtags from Winston's Insta and Twitter accounts (@winston_ab_rees on Twitter and Insta), plus Paul Baldwin and Raglan.

THE AWESOME PRIZE!
The single winner will get an army bundle of 28mm metal Wars of the Roses miniatures from Athena Miniatures. This lovely new line of miniatures are now live as retail after a successful kickstarter, and this is what the prize bundle includes;

Plus;

And

Set of x 8 brand new Vallejo model washes.

That's a £186 army bundle, book and washes in total to one lucky winner.

ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFO?
-As this is competition which is social media-focused and involves metal minis as a prize - entrants under the age of 18 must enter via the supervision of an adult and posted on the account of an adult i.e. through their parent/guardian.
-No cheating. It's a valuable prize so those in contention to win will be contacted in advance of final announcement and asked to provide additional photos via an authentication process.
-Judges decision is final on the winner and on any necessary interpretation of the above rules
-Organisers of World War of the Roses and judges are obviously barred from entering!
-Please make sure you post no more than four images per entry and use good images which are clearly in focus and well lit
-By entering you agree we (the World War of the Roses team) may use your images on social media for purposes of winning announcement and or inclusion of highlights in a video showcasing judging process/best entries.
-You enter at your own risk and the organisers shall not be held liable/responsible for any weird injury you may incur while cutting/sawing miniatures in the process of creating an entry.........
-Have fun and paint! #WorldWarRoses #WWRvignette

I am committing to the vignette and painting WOTR figures for the next month or so.

We will conduct a game at French Wargame Holidays here in France on the May 22-23 Weekend. Plan to fight a Never Mind the Bill hooks skirmish and Impetus large battle. Battles to be announced, but I am thinking 1st Saint Albans and then Tewksbury.

Put some more figures on the table this week into the painting line up to add to my collection.

Cheers

I too will commit to the vignette. Although the lockdown is easign here in Jersey it is yet to be determined if we will be able to meet to fight a battle. MOre on that as the easign proceeds.

I've had an idea for some time with respect to the vignette. I'm finishing off some command stands for some Hundred Years War (Never Mind the Billhooks rules). As soon as these are completed I'll get on it.

Cheers All,
Richard

I won't be doing a vignette, but I'll be playing at leastvone skirmish using the "Knyghte, Pyke, and Sworde" rules from Nordic Weasel Games. I've begun painting and my opponent is already set, so it looks like it's going to happen.

I was asking as it might just spur me on into actually getting something together and entering! :)

Sorry, I ought to have worded my post a little more clearly..... what I was asking, is; is it OK to post WIP pictures of our work as we put the vignette together and during the painting process or would you just prefer an image or three of the final piece Winston?

If I may, I'll post the pix and the battle result here, since I don't have the approved social media accounts but should love to be in with this lot and am wearing my brushes out painting both armies here in Bangkok. Will this be allowed? You won't have many WOTR engagements fought in SE Asia, I suspect.

Some nice entries so far. I love the scrolls and armet on De Vere's table, and always good to see Clifford's red wyvern flying!
My entry is set in the lawless Royal Forest of Knaresborough, and also partly inspired by The Black Arrow, by RL Stevenson. The steward, and Percy supporter, Sir William Plumpton is, rather unsuccessfully, trying to chase down a local outlaw!

Hello all. Please note entries for the competition are now closed. Judging will take place over Easter and the result will be announced here and on social later in April. Thank you to all who have taken part for some wonderful vignettes.

This thread will be renamed shortly to take us up to and include news on all the WWR May games.

Hello all and a warm thank you to everyone who entered. We had some fantastic entries. Winner will be announced here on Sunday April 11 and also on my Instagram and Twitter accounts @winston_ab_rees on the same date.

Meanwhile the easing of restrictions in the UK means we are looking good for May 22 and 23 although obviously the situation in other countries varies. We should still have plenty of WotR games taking place internationally though on both dates.

Further info to follow too on the plans for a group Zoom call on the weekend and international score keeping for Lancaster and York! Keep painting and posting with #WorldWarRoses

Evening all, and it's time for the announcement. In short, we were utterly chuffed with the thought, care and attention that went into more than a dozen entries to this compo. We're so grateful to everyone who entered and took the time to create some wonderful vignettes, thank you everyone.

It was so tough we decided to introduce two 'commended' consolation awards. The first goes to Andy Jarvis for his Earl of Oxford piece. Judges commented on the wonderful flags, colours, and details in this. Could easily have been a winner. So close!

Our second consolation 'commended' award goes to Thew2 - who also was so close with the wonderful presentation, animation, groundwork and creativity in this one.

Finally our overall winner - Little Ninja Painting, who entered via Twitter with this incredible work showing Gloucester bowmen staking in under the watchful eye of a captain. Judges loved the colours and blends, thought that clearly went into the piece, change of height, placement etc, "a true vignette" as everyone agreed.

We're now contacting LNP and the two consolation prize winners to send out some marvellous Athena WotR miniatures to them. Thanks again to John at Athena who so kindly sponsored the comp and put up the prizes.

And again - we're absolutely honoured by the effort everyone put in and sorry if you did not win. We were impressed by all of them and I personally loved everything of course, it being a WotR fest, but we had to choose.

I've had a few days free and my fighting troops aren't here yet, so I've knocked together a few WotR vignettes for the baggage trains. 10mm, please note. The more literate here, which I trust will include you, gentle reader, will recognise Somerset killing Wenlock after Tewkesbury, the death of Clarence, Dighton and Forrest babysitting the sons of Edward IV, a Son that Hath Killed his Father and a Father that Hath Killed his Son behind Henry VI, and Richard Plantagenet and the Duke of Somerset picking a few roses.

Evening all - and here are some pointers for the weekend's event for our LAF participants.

1. Many of the UK games, including our big St Albans I game (with Raglan & Paul Baldwin), are going ahead in person due to the easing of Coronavirus restrictions. We will of course support anyone who would rather postpone a game due to the challenges of restrictions in their country or through personal choice/circumstances. We'll simply add your result to the final York vs Lancaster total at a later date. Please abide by the guidance pertaining to your part of the world!

2. The bulk of games however should take place this Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23.

3. If your chosen method of #WorldWarRoses communication is here on the LAF, please reply to this post with your location, planned game scenario - i.e. which battle.

4. Then on the weekend itself post pictures here of your games along with the result - Lancaster or York.

5. There will be two brief (circa 15mins) group Zoom calls on the weekend - one Saturday and one Sunday - arranged at different times which hopefully make it bareable / possible for you to join wherever your time zone may be. During the call, we'll all simply say hello across the globe, share a few pictures/camera angles of our games and wish oneanother luck in battle. If you would like to join a Zoom call - send me a private message via the LAF messaging service to obtain the details/code from me.

6. The following week I'll share a few highlights, battle reports and latest score here on the forum.

Good luck everyone, and thank you so much for your support! #WorldWarRoses

Bangkok here; playing this Saturday, SE Asia time (GMT + 6. I believe); Battle of Tolpit's Common (which you won't find in the history books - hope that's OK); Edward IV = Alexander Hay-Whitton, Warwick = Krisanan Lertanantawong.

A re-imagining of Bosworth 1485.

I will put on a small game on Sunday. As my forces build, I only have small forces, so within that limit i shall just be doing 1 ward Vs 1 ward using Sword & Spear Rules.

We pick up the story at the point that Richard sees treachery in the actions (or rather non-actions) of Lord Stanley. He orders the execution Stanley's son, Lord Strange, whom he holds hostage.

And then our story 're-imagines' a spin-off. Richard goes to Northumberland's (Percy) inactive ward and orders him to attack Lord Stanley and that is where this scenario is based - on what we believe was a quiet part of the battlefield.

Percy has slightly larger forces than Stanley, but will Stanley's brother, who is already partly engaged supporting Oxford, send across enough reinforcement to Help Lord Stanley? plus Percy will have to cross open ground in front of Stanley's excellent Welsh archers. Richard is supporting the Percy 'what if' with some cavalry and a re-orientation of his light artillery.

I am racing to get another base of hand-gunners painted and based to round out the OoB for the game.

I don't do the various social media, so will post back here with pics and results.

Given this is out of sequence with the battles we have so far fought in our WOTR series I'll hold fire on posting the results until such time that we have fought Mortimer's Cross, 2nd St Albans and Ferrybridge.

Wishing everyone a great weekend of WOTR gaming

(Tolpit village. Enter King Edward as prologue)
King: Though two months' wait have crept their tiresome way,
Like unto a friend who, late for the game,
Hath not turn'd up and wears the patience out
Of those whose smalltalk is exhausted quite
And cannot drink more coffee without risk,
Yet is the day of battle now arriv'd,
With high plumes dancing o'er his burnish'd helm
And proud, bright trumpets calling men to arms.
Now long the dice to rattle in the tower,
The rules neglected to be read again;
And now the warlike figures are unpack'd,
10 mil or 28, 15 or 6,
Ready to act in little scale and space
Great feats of courage, mighty histories,
And crimes to make the page of record blush.

(another part of Tolpit village. Enter severally two clowns)
Clo. I:   Save thee, neighbour. Is the world run mad,
That such great hosts do march upon our fields,
And, if report say true, our goodly king,
Henry of Lancaster, fortune e’er attend him,
In presence with the beauteous Margaret?
Have they no business in London keeps them there,
But huddle in this corner of the realm?
Clo. II:   Why the blank verse? In these scenes of low life among the common folk, we should  speak earthy prose, mixed withal into a scramble of worn-out idioms and heavy puns.
Clo. I: Aye, if only to allow the leads time to scramble into their armour and cast an eye o'er the script for the big speech to the army.
Clo. II: But tell me, friend, why do they fight these wars? I do wonder what they will do with the crown after they win it at the cost of so much bloodshed.
Clo.I: Marry, worry for the rest of their lives over who intends to steal it from their heads, and perchance their heads from their shoulders too.
Clo. II: First thing that I’d do, I’d kill all the rules lawyers. Is’t not a shame that because Phil Barker could not write good plain English or understand a tapster’s arithmetic, the Sabbath afternoon of games should end in broken friendships?
Clo. I: Aye, and broken heads at that. Come, shall we drain the ale in yon hostelry before the thirsty soldiers steal it all?
Clo. II: Lead on, I’ll follow thee.

(Queen Margaret adressesses her army)
....And, though unskilful, why not Ned and I
For once allow'd the skilful pilot's charge?
We will not from the helm to sit and weep,
But keep our course, though the rough wind say no,
From shelves and rocks that threaten us with wreck.
As good to chide the waves as speak them fair.
And what is Edward but a ruthless sea?
What Clarence but a quicksand of deceit?
And Richard but a ragged fatal rock?
All these the enemies to our poor bark.
Say you can swim; alas, 'tis but a while!
Tread on the sand; why, there you quickly sink:
Bestride the rock; the tide will wash you off,
Or else you famish; that's a threefold death.
This speak I, lords, to let you understand,
If case some one of you would fly from us,
That there's no hoped-for mercy with the brothers
More than with ruthless waves, with sands and rocks.
Why, courage then! what cannot be avoided
'Twere childish weakness to lament or fear.

Our real enemy is the Duke of Clarence, who has deserted with all our cavalry, such as it is! Fortunately, Stanley, commanding the Lancastrian horse, is ignoring orders.

The Lee manouvre; move your general (Neville, Earl of Warwick) into a town where artillery can't reach him, and wait with a strong reserve for an opening.

Lord Stanley, backing Lancaster at this stage, decided to sit out the first four rounds. William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, had read "Richard III" and moved up to cover his flank in case Stanley turned his coat.
Alas, my own knights, under George Duke of Clarence, were sent off to turn the enemy flank, and decided to stop off at Peterhaven for a drink or two. Or three. Or four....

Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, leads a collection of "smokie gunnes" to the support of Richard, who was finding Warwick's followers tougher than he expected.

The right centre contained and broke the Lancastrian attack, assisted by some shire levies who rained arrows from the battlements of Hay Castle (newly bought from Magister Militum, 1:300 scale).

Lee is not the only one who prefers not to lose her C-in-C. I wanted to keep Edward out of trouble until I could arrange a screen of Flemish crossbowmen to cover him, but they advanced so slowly that he never left the hill.

Now the warlike Warwick emerged to choose a flank and hit it. Audley's attempt to lend flank support was not enough. Both armies had to retreat with morale rather battered.

No victory, no royals killed; most important casualties were Pole, ignominiously shot with a new-fangled handgun, and Courtenay, Howard, Hastings, and Buckingham, who all fell nobly in combat.

Rules: Home-brew Ten More Sons! with special pack of event cards
Figures: Pendraken 10 mm
Mat: Tiny Wargames
Castle: Magister Militum
Other buildings: Leven
Malmsey: Villa Supermarket, Sukhumvit branch

Thanks, an excellent account with a lot of WotR flavour - did the cards produce much of that or was it just down to good rules with an interpreting narrative?. The castle looks superb and makes for a great centre piece.

My own contribution.

I have covered a 'what if' type scenario, taken from the Bosworth battle. It looks at the area of inactivity between Northumberland (Percy) and Lord Stanley.

Today we have Percy going onto the offensive and attacking Lord Stanley's position, who has urgently sent for help from his brother, Sir. William.

I am at the early stage of collecting, so the size of my game reflects that, being 28mm in a 4'x4' space (in truth a smaller table would have been fine).

Hopefully doing a game at this level will encourage others who may be wanting to use 28's in a small space.

Anyway, pics, background fluff and an ARR are up on the blog.

For the record, a Yorkist win, but by the slimmest of margins

And thank you to the organisers  of this event and to those who are putting games up, I am already enjoying your picture and reports. Norm.

Yes, my scourers got lances, which gave them the edge over Lee's, and her extra beer rations saved her on one occasion from a broken unit result in melee. The cards influence but don't dominate the action, which is what I intended.

I think the castle was the last of some old MM stock; it's no longer on their site. I don't know why; it does look just right, and it's clear there's plenty of WotR enthusiasm out there.

I'm glad your game advanced the Yorkist cause, even if mine didn't.

As night falls, the bold attack by the Earl of Warwick won the day for the Yorkists and it began his famous military career and would lead to his reputation as "the Kingmaker". King Henry was taken prisoner and escorted back to London.

Ta. I resisted WotR for decades (wot? no cavalry?), but am rather enjoying it, of course.

I couldn't have afforded a vat full; it hardly comes cheap out here. Anyway, I'm one step away from TT (started drinking a little when I turned 50), and no gout sufferer drinks immoderately and gets away with it, trust me.

Hay Castle, in the recent Battle of Tolpit's Field, was flying a number of flags throughout the battle; Lee didn't capture them on film, but fortunately I did. They can be replaced with Lancastrian banners, though taking a castle is so difficult nobody ever attempts it!
The model needed a little work before painting, since every single tower was provided with an obvious gateway - not a discreet little sally-port, please note - but a few minutes with builder's plaster sorted it out. The modeller clearly hadn't quite worked out what medieval fortifications were for.

Hi all, I note from page 1 of this thread that battle reports were encouraged to go onto social media. I am not enrolled with the main social media groups, no doubt my loss as a wargamer, but I wondered whether those that gamed and posted to social media, would throw a photo or two onto here, just as a catch-all. Thanks Norm.

A very warm thank you to all who took part - for anyone not on social the final figures were;

Yorkists 5
Lancastrians 7
1 Draw

We had 13 games in 9 different countries overall. It was a mixed picture in terms of Covid-19 restrictions - ok in UK/Aus/NZ, for example, and tricky for Canada, who held their game outdoors.

Myself, Gareth and Paul certainly found #WorldWarRoses a welcome distraction as the pandemic uncertainty continues, and we hope others did too.

There has already been enthusiasm for a sequel event next year - perhaps with even greater levels of co-ordination and in-person gaming where possible. We'll keep all updated with plans.

Thanks again to everyone who either hosted a game, painted, took part in the vignette competition, or just showed us some encouragement and enthusiasm.
