On returning to miniature painting ~ 5 yrs ago, after many years layoff since childhood, I did a 2nd Punic war, Battle of Lake Trasimene Diorama. Since then my knowledge of the period has grown as have my miniature skills so I feel it's time to revisit this most epic period of ancient history. I thought it might be nice to share some of the works in progress here and get any tips/ suggestions and other feedback.
-
This was my effort a few years ago. You may note some historical inaccuracies ie Lorica Segmentata. ( Hollywood error !) In fact most of the Romans look post Marian reforms now I look at them. Anyhow that's the starting point. I'm now working on a series of smaller modular Punic war "brigades" . Will show progress shots soon.
-
hand painted Iberian Shields ( not very well).
-
That is quite the diorama, last time I saw anything like that was at Hamburg’s Tactica show.
-
Wow, that is really cool! I've thought about trying my hand at dioramas here and there. I always talk myself out of it, due to lack of skill ( :D ) and the fact that, in my head at least, once the minis are part of a diorama, that's where they are, and you can't use them for anything else. But I gotta say, your presentation here is really inspiring!
-
Thanks guys but that's the work form ~ 2 yrs ago. Here's the more recent stuff. Starting w my Carthaginian Sacred Band backed by big Bull Elephant.
-
from the front ...
-
and the view the camp followers would have got ...
-
other side
models mostly from Victrix, a few Agema guys a bit of kit bashing etc..
Really liking the Agema figures. More of them to come especially w the Roman Manipular Legion.
-
starting on some Roman Princepes. Picked up this nice orange brown paint by Reaper the other day to use on their tunics. I like the colour a lot.
-
bit more done ...
-
I like your bases and the staged photos- Wonderful work.
-
Thanks Codsticker. Here's the 1st principe ( principe principe you could say :) ) almost done ....
-
Velites based now . Mostly Agema figures.
-
and from reverse..
I used a new method for me to base. Glued the figures to the board then made a perimeter border of masking tape. As it was going to be difficult to get between the legs and soothe out the stands with modeling putty, as I do for single figures, I tried just pouring in a thin layer of epoxy resin mixed with dark paint. Once semi dry I sprinkled in some grit. Then just gave a wash of Citadel Nuln Oil and a bit of grass. I'm pretty happy with the result and made things a lot easier.
-
Principal Princepe done !
-
Agema guy w Victrix shield and transfer by LBMS
-
2nd brigade of Velites. Mostly Victrix this time.
-
More Velites done. Mostly Victrix w some Agema.

Triarii. Mostly Agema. The back row both corners are Aventine.
-
Triarii again
-
No retreat !
-
The Agema and Victrix figures make great looking Triarii
-
Just completed my Libyan skirmishers. Mostly Victrix.
-
again

That Agema princeps is really nice, great paintjob on the face. The Libyans clothes are too shiny, maybe a(nother) coat of matt clear. Looking great though.

Thanks cadbren. Good suggestion w the matte.

Liby-Phoencian Foot. Agema figures, slightly modified.

-
Roman Equites enter the contest.
-
metal models. I think by Warlord Games. I bought a few yrs ago and sat in the cupboard neglected till now.
-
Phoenician Foot -- made by combining and modifying Agema Roman and Carthaginian kits. Made simple linothoraxes from paper. Not 100% happy w them but add another interesting unit to my diverse Punic force.

PF 2

PF3

These look great, especially the equites!
Quite impressed by the Agema miniatures too!
-
some elite Punics
Victrix models although the middle guy's head is from Wargames Atlantic Persians w crest added. Shields hand painted.
-
North African Forest Elephants ( now sadly extinct) in the service of Carthage.

Howdahs custom made.
Larger tusks made from Milliput
Mostly Victrix models.

Nice modifications to the elephants

Looks good!
“Regular Guy” looks like Wargames Factory horse (and figure minus head).
-
Correct. Head is a Victrix Numidian.
-
Very nice! I really like the mixing and matching of different bits into units as you've done here!
-
Yeah thanks FB. That's the benefit of being a compulsive miniature kit buyer :). I have literally hundreds of guys and thousands of left over bits kicking around. I hardly ever make a unit straight up as intended by a single manufacturer.
-
I see V&V miniatures have some nice looking Carthaginian Officers out. Pity the cost of figures and postage is way above industry standard or I'd jump to add them to my army.

They are nice looking figures but how fragile are they? Especially considering the cost...
-
Princepes - finally done !
-
mostly Agema. Front left of screen is a metal Warlord Games Hail Caesar guy.
-
musician is by Aventine
-
hope you like
-
side on .....
-
Numidian Cavalry now completed.
-
Bodies mostly unarmoured Greeks ( victrix) w Numidian/Libyan Victrix heads shields freehanded, horses on far R and L are Aventine, 2nd from right is Wargames Factory and 2nd from left is a Warlord Games German Cav horse.
-
getting away....
-
Command group of Carthage
-
A mix of figures. Trumpeter by Agema, some Victrix and some kitbashing.
-
Another Numidian Cavalryman
-
made from body of Victrix unarmoured greek, libyan head from Victrix Warriors of Carthage set, horse is Aventine. As the legs of the Victrix guy would be too splayed for the slim Aventine horse I put the body in boiling water and molded the legs in a bit. The spear quiver if custom made. I custom made the sheep skin wrap too from greenstuff.
-
I enjoying doing more Numidian Cavalary so I've ordered a set of the Victrix ones to add some more. I thought I'd do 2 small units, Masaesyli. and Massylii Numidians w different colour schemes.
-
I love all the variation and kitbashing on these Numidians :)
-
Punic heavy cavalry
-
Victrix Greek Horse, Gripping beast rider, Aventine head.
-
Finally finished my Carthaginian Citizen Spearmen.
-
advancing
-
and the reverse :)
-
some character figures
-
Trumpeter
-
Spears up !
-
Agema Carthaginian Command figure. I like him a lot. A bit slim- as most Agema metals are - but cool pose and details
-
I modified the original figure a little with changing the basic sword to the curved kopis and plumed up his tail a bit w greenstuff
-
Shield is by Relic and transfer Veni vidi vici
-
Nice work on him, he is a really nice figure and one of my favourite command figures.
cheers
Matt
-
A variety of Carthaginians. Kitbashed into action !
-
Punic Lion tamer
-
Lion 2
-
Agema Sacred Band Command. Actually I was a bit disappointed in the production quality of these figures. Lots of mould lines and hard to put together. Came out okay in the end.
-
again
-
Enjoyed painting these Gripping Beast metal Libyan command figures more. :) Nicely made and clear details.
-
although the guy w the scale armour and black shield w red horse is Agema.
-
Agema Mago Barca - modified a bit. Normally comes w dog. I cut off R hand and realigned it. Added plastic Agema spear. Victrix Carthaginian shield w free handed design.
-
V and V
-
more V and V -- superb mins !
-
Just went through this thread, you really have a great collection!
-
Thanks. Not finished yet :)
-
Thanks. Not finished yet :)
It never is, I know... :) Looking forward for more.
-
New V and V Elephant. Very nice model ! Easy to assemble w minimal clean up work. Only issue was the long spear. Needed to use a broom stick spear and attach the spearhead and butt spikes.
-
and again
-
and a modified V and V w Victrix arms so a "VVV " figure :)
-
Video review available here....

Roman Alae -- Victrix. I went for the battle weary look w some sword slashes in shields, dust on lower parts and a smattering of dried blood.
I'll do a block of 4 more with the more dynamic Agema plastic figures next.
-
Beautiful work all around, but that elephant is especially nice! I really like the colour palette you used, and the bronze in particular.

Thanks PM. The bronze if quite easy. I base c Vallejo Tinny Tin, light dry brush over w Vallejo Gold and then some Army painter Quickwash - purple, dark or even the flesh wash all work well.
-
Thanks for the information about how you do bronze, using a purple wash never would have occurred to me (but in retrospect it makes sense that purple would make suitable shadows when applied over an essentially yellow metallic paint).
-
Agema Miniatures Alae unit. More dynamic. :)

-
Victrix Numidian Cav. And before you say it - YES , I know Numidians aren't that black. They're not Nubians ! Just wanted to see how he looked and I'm quite happy w him actually. :)

That Diorama looks great.
