Title: Turnip28 - Skirmish Wargaming in a Post Apocalyptic Napoleonic Setting!
Post by: King Arthur on December 12, 2020, 03:55:50 PM
Greetings fellow Adventurers!

I know a few of you like a good Kit-Bash project! Here's one I'm currently working on and enjoying very much!!!

It's a project for a soon to be released Skirmish game by the name of Turnip28...... as the name suggests it's heavily influenced by Turnips and root veggies! What the F I hear you cry.....

Its background setting is also highly interesting, it's a Post Apocalyptic (no zombies or mutants) Napoleonic era with a Medieval twist and a touch of the 'Great War' - trenches, mud and desolation.

I am in no way endorsed by the creator, I am a member of the Patreon though so I have access to the games rules etc.

If you're unfamiliar with the game, here's an interview the games creator:

https://www.goonhammer.com/turnip28-interview-with-max-fitzgerald/

Here's the front cover for the rule book, suitably grim:

(https://i.ibb.co/7KpPZH0/Turnip28.png) (https://ibb.co/1TX1P34)

As said before, the setting of Napoleonic/Medieval gives rise to tons of kit-bash opportunities, enter the stage Perry Miniatures  :D One additional twist to the creation of the models is to include roots/vegetation growths, primarily sprouting from the backs.....

To kick my project off, I was inspired by the artwork of a chap called Moritz, Blackcrabrt on Instgram, his drawing of a Cavalryman was the base for the build of my first model:

(https://i.ibb.co/hdV12hz/IMG-9546.jpg) (https://ibb.co/my4Fh1W)

The base for the build was a Medieval Knight, the sword from a Nap. French Hussar and the rifle from a Nap. French Dragoon and a bit of Milliput and Greenstuff to make the clothes you see in the picture. Here's the post putty work (sorry for the glaring whiteness of the Milliput, the lamp was too high a setting, but a I couldn't be bothered to retake   ::) )

(https://i.ibb.co/zJSNbJ1/IMG-9735.jpg) (https://ibb.co/8cjX2cJ)

One particular aspect of the setting I enjoy is that of the 'Tech' it blends the two era's together, you can see in the picture I have attached the head of a Halberd to the underside of the rifle, using some sewing thread to act as the rope. In game there's a section of rules that relates to 'Time Honoured Weapons' allowing you to equip your troops with Bows, Crossbows, Halberds, Swords etc

Next up, you'll see that I added the roots growing from the riders back and spewing forth from the horses mouth, these are a product by Martin Welberg Scenic Studios, one of his dried weeds. I also based the model in vallejo's German Field Grey ahead of the Oil Painting:

(https://i.ibb.co/M1Yq0HD/IMG-9758.jpg) (https://ibb.co/LgL47yz)

OK, now onto the fun stuff, Oil Painting!!! On some projects, I really do enjoy using Oils, Turnip28 lends itself well to the medium as the troops are usually filthy and disjointed looking, so the blending and colour use offered by Oils is just great  :) The brand of Oils doesn't matter, I have a lot of Lukas as my local art store has 20% off that brand and then I fill in gaps with Windsor Newton. I use a mix of synthetic and cheaper sable brushes as the oils plus the cleaning will eventually ruin your good sable ones.

(https://i.ibb.co/Qk71N7f/IMG-9823.jpg) (https://ibb.co/nBq5cqb)

I first applied a wash of Paynes Grey over the entire model and then wiped away the surface colour, leaving it in the recesses and underside, this acted as shadows and the beauty with oils is the paint stays wet for a few days, so I could use the Paynes Grey and drag it down into other colours to darken them. In the pictures above you can see the first stages of the painting where I begun blocking in colours.

And here's how it turned out! In the artwork, the horse looked very malnourished and that was a look I couldn't achieve on an already sculpted plastic horse, so I opted to make the horse look sickly, I gradually blended in yellow, green and purple into the brown skin tone. The little stones I initially glued onto the front legs were to represent fungus growths you commonly see on tree bark, so I painted those to look like that and the rider was painted in various shades of khaki, green, purple, blue, magenta. all blended together in a non uniformed manner. The base was finished off by applying some shrubs from Martin Welberg and using Vallejo's Mud to represent, well, mud..... To kill off the satin from some of the oil colours, I gave the model two coats of Matt Varnish Galleria by Windsor and Newton.

One down, many more to go  ;)

Onto the next part.... I wanted to work on a unit this time, so looking through the rules, I settled upon a unit of 'Chaff' these are Skirmishers, their main aim being to distract the enemy whilst attempting to take out their Heavy Infantry (Brutes). With this in mind, and under orders from my daughter, I begun to build four female's, I wanted them to have a somewhat veteran/elite look, so I added various weapons to them. They are a mix of European Mercenary bodies, some British light infantry back packs and rifles and Kingdom Death Monster female heads:

Next stage, you guessed it, Oil Paints  :D

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the game if you're also building up a force of already gaming?

More to follow as the army grows!

Really interesting concept, I really like the whole idea of it. Enjoyed reading through your conversion of the figures and your thought process behind it. Don't know if I will join in but I am certainly interested in seeing where this game goes. :)

This is exactly what I am thinking about it. It is not perfectly to my taste, but interesting enough to follow. I look forward to see more of it soon!

I like what you’re doing doing and I also like the ‘T28’ setting; it’s got an early Ghibli vibe to it  8)

Amazing, I love your kitbashed models amd the use of oils is brilliant.

I've put together some Turnip28 style models but haven't got to painting them yet. I got turned onto the Sludge wargame by Sean Sutter (Relicblade). He was inspired after seeing some of the original T28 stuff on Instagram and came up with his own vision of a game before he knew anything about it. As a result Sludge is its own thing maybe more mud based than tuber. There is a lot of crossover though! Rules etc can be obtained through the Metal King Discord group

Glad to see Turnip 28 making its way to LAF, it was inevitable really.  lol

I've been slow to actually get started but now that the rules are taking shape I'm sure I'll start converting some stuff as well. Its quite daunting though, there are so many amazing builds out there already, like yours!  :o

Love the conversion work, hate the moniker  lol

While inspiration from other sources is obvious, it feels fresh - we need more of this all round  :D

Love this - I did start putting together some turnip forces but fellmofnthe wagon a bit, hadn’t considered it as more of a skirmish game and now I’m rethinking. Might revisit my kit bashing!

Thanks for showing your oil process, I’ve been using lots of oil washes and glazes recently, but still a little unsure where to start going full oil, this is helpful and the result is lovely :)

Hello again fellow adventurers!

Here's the next update to my Turnip28 project! The unit of 'Chaff' has been completed! Once again the models were painted using Oils:

Lucky Lotti The Pale and her sisterhood of Brute hunters! It is said that Charlotte (Lotti) gets her 'Lucky' tag by being a veteran of countless battles, having been on the front line, fighting with a speed and fury that some say is impressively unnatural.....she has recovered from many a rifle shot or sword slash that would fell most people!!! It is also said that she always enjoys a good glass of deep red 'Beetroot' juice post battle, although not many Beetroots are to be found growing in these parts.....

(https://i.ibb.co/CtnF85N/T28-Chaff-07.png) (https://ibb.co/8BjVsDT)

These were great fun to model and paint, I really like the opportunity to 'kitbash' and be creative with the build and subsequent paint job. I find that Oils lend themselves very well to the aesthetic of Turnip28!

Next on the table will be a unit of 12 'Fodder' these are the rank and file mass infantry units of the T28 world.

Stay tuned for more  :)

Greetings all,

Here's the next instalment of my T28 project -  a unit of 12 'Fodder' these chaps will form the main body of the army and are expected to disperse the enemy with volley fire, should their rifles work....

Again, I set about kit-bashing Perry Miniature Napoleonic's and Medieval. I worked in some details using Green Stuff and Sewing Thread and the root growths are weeds from Martin Welberg Scenics. Three of the models took inspiration from art in the rule book:

I will once again be using Oil Paints on the models.

Hello once again!

Painting and basing has now been completed on the unit of 12 Fodder! Once again I used oil paints and this time around I wanted to add some details and definitions, so I went to work with some Enamel Washes. Enamel washes are great, in particular, for Turnip28 as once dry they leave a chalky/dusty effect.

"Dear Journal, it's been two weeks since we left the ruins in the north; that's where I found the pictures or paintings as they were called, of the strange woman; I found two of the same! I wanted to give thanks to the Great Root for the find so I begun to pay homage by drawing on my favourite root, the Carrot. One of the lads who is more well versed than I gasped when he saw what I was doing! He said the ruins must have been the 'Loov-Ra' or something like that and that the pictures were very valuable once; he also said they kept two copies, the original and another for the people to look at......... If the original is worth something, I hope my artistic homage was done on the copy as I'm thinking of trading in the original for a bag of potatoes and some carrots of course....."

The banner was printed onto Japanese Rice Paper. I like using this type of paper for banners as it prints out in great quality and if you have a two sided flag that you glued together you can manipulate it whilst it's drying to give off the effect of movement in the wind.

And lastly, here's a group shot of the project so far:

Stay tuned for more!

Hello once again my fellow Adventurers!

The next round of models for my T28 project is now completed!

In game, these chaps and chapess' are known as 'Brutes' - they are the hard hitting, veterans of the contingent, well fed troops which have been influenced by the 'Great Root'. To represent this, I added some tentacles to each model, these roots have grown out of their clothes, bags or skin and are a very helpful battle companion, assisting with weapon control and generally freaking the F*@K out of their opponents  :D

Here's the 6 person unit; the mainstay of the conversions were Perry Miniatures Naps and Medieval with some Kingdom Death Monster parts (the heads of both females and the torso of the Gas Mask wearing female), some Tamiya WW2 weapons (Gas Mask and the Helmet on the big guy) and some Oldhammer skulls. Tentacles were made from Green Stuff using the Tentacle Roller from Greenstuff World.

Here's a close up of 'Frederik - 'Freddy' thinks himself a bit of a ladies man and is always making inappropriate jokes about the size of his 'Root'..........

He began life as a Zombie from the excellent Studio Miniatures.

Some really great kit bashing and conversion work there.
But that German steel helmet looks "wrong" (I know, seems a strange thing to say about Turnip28 figures but there you go). I think it is too recognisable as what it actual is and does not work with the Napoleonic/Medieval theme you have going with the rest.

Hello Robh,

I'm too leaning towards that trail of thought, I was looking at ways to diversify but I'm beginning to like the thought of the big chap wearing a Bear skin hat squeezed on to his head, I think it'll look quite comical and fit better. Thanks for the constructive feedback  ;)

If you do stick with the helmet, putting a spike on top and turning it into a pickelhaube would go a long way as those were around since 1842, which is not that far off from your timeline.

Hello fellow Adventurers!!

Apologies for the delay!

The unit of 6 Brutes as shown in the previous post has been completed, until I get around to properly photographing them I have begun work on a unit of 'Bastards' - these are the sons of the Toadies and Snobs who are eager to prove their worth on the battlefield and are represented as a unit of 3 Cavalry.

As they are both heavy cavalry and the sons of 'noblemen' I wanted them to look menacing and live up to the name of 'Bastards'. The base for the models was some Perry Miniatures French Napoleonic with some Kingdom Death Monster and GW Wood Elf Dryad parts thrown in!! Extra details added with Green stuff and sewing thread. To give the horses a grimy/fungal look, I primed them with a mix of Gesso and grit.

If you noticed from my opening post, I had already painted one cavalry model, so here's the next two to complete the unit!

As per the previous units, I will be painting the majority of the models with Oil Paints and then picking out details with acrylics and enamel washes where applicable.

I hope you like the 'Bastards' and stay tuned more more soon!

Thanks!

Hello once more Adventurers!

I finally got around to photographing the unit of Brutes, so without further delay, here they are for your viewing pleasure!

Once again, I used Oils, Acrylic and some Enamel washes. I also used some Pan Pastels to blend the skin tones on the big guy. I wanted this unit to have a sense of the exotic as in game they are heaving hitting infantry who have been influenced by the 'Great Root' - hence the tentacle additions; they need to stand apart from the Fodder and Chaf units.

As always, I hope you enjoy this latest instalment and stay tuned for the painted unit of 'Bastards' coming soon....

Take care and happy hobbying!

Hello once again fellow Adventurers!!

After a small hobby break during the Summer period, I recently returned to my T28 project and completed my unit of Heavy Cavalry aka 'Bastards'! The fallen sons of nobility eager to prove themselves on the field of battle!

The models were Kit Bashed from Perry Miniatures primarily with a few pieces from Kingdom Death Monster (the Masks) and GW (the Dryad horns) thrown in!

The models were painted using Oil Paints.

Hello once again fellow T28 entusiasts!

I have completed work on the Cannon for the force! The Cannon itself and 3 of the crew are from Victrix with some Perry medieval heads/weapons attached and the final crew member who is keeping cavalry at bay is a French Agincourt knight armed with a Crossbow. The wooden spikes are from an English Longbow sprue. The models were painted using Oil Paints and the ground using Vallejo's 'Thick Russian Mud'. The cannon balls are small metal bearings.

Thank you! I set the theme from the projects beginning, as I use a Black backdrop for photography, I wanted to use muted tones with primary 'pops' and the cadmium based oil paints are so intense they fit the bill perfectly, popping off the backdrop nicely!

Greetings once again fellow Hobbyists!!

Up next will the last model of the warband - the units Leader, a SNOB!

The base for the model is a Death Rider from Forge World as the horse has the right sense of creepy for the project! I set about scraping away all the Imperial insignia, getting rid of the riders gasmask and airtubes and fleshing out the helmet a little with greenstuff so it look less German WWII. As this is the Leader I wanted a different arm pose than the original that was lower down holding a spear. I was inspired by an artwork piece from the Planet of the Apes franchise where a mounted Chimp was holding aloft a rifle! The look I wanted was of the Leader to be seen as inspiring his troops onwards! The look was completed by adding a Mask from the Kingdom Death Monster boardgame and then adding in some medieval flavor by grabbing pieces from the Perry's WotR sprues.

Hello once again T28 enthusiasts!!

The force's SNOB has been painted, based and photographed! Once again, I used oil paints to complete the work, staying with the overall theme of muted tones with primary 'pops'! The mud used on the base is Vallejo's 'Thick Russian Mud'.

This model is the last one in the force and brings to a close this chapter of a highly enjoyable project!!! The T28 setting really allowed for a more abstract approach to painting and the medium of oil paints really was a perfect match to get that gloomy feel!! I will add some photo's soon of a group shot so you can see all the models arrayed together, but for now, here's Johnny.........

Do they call the red-haired one "The Beautiful" because she(?) doesn't have any horrible growths on her face? Or perhaps "The Ill-Favored"?  ;)

One of the things I love about Turnip28 is that it encourages people to kitbash/customize/chop up miniatures. I can barely bring myself to do weapon or head swaps unless it's just pieces from a North Star kit or a model's already broken. Maybe someday I'll get brave!

I love your work.

Ah, this is 'Lucky Lotti' leader of the Brute Hunters!! It is said that Charlotte (Lotti) gets her 'lucky' tag by being a veteran of countless conflicts, having been on  the front line, fighting with a speed and fury that some say is impressively unnatural for a Women of her staure......she has recovered from many a rifle shot or sword slash that would fell most! It is also said that she always enjoys a glass of deep red 'Beetroot' juice post battle, although not many Beetroots are to be found growing in the fields nowdays.....

So perhaps the secret to her youthful appearence is her love of 'Beetroot' juice  ;)
