Thats the first box finished, next one is in the post.
Have some mounted MAA in the plastic pile, but am a bit intimidated by them!

Very Nice
-
Nice work. Another nudge for me to get mine done!
-
Excellent work. It is a tempting period.
-
Great colour combos; certainly inspiring me to get more done (one day we might actually get to play with them!)
I think Contrast browns might be handy on the horses.
-
Nice and efficient work!

And another unit marches off toward Mortimer's Cross

Wow! Yeah. Those have come out very well indeed. Painted sallet helmets are just cool.

They look sharp! Looking forward to seeing more.

How common was that practice?

I have no idea. Lots of people seem to do it and it looks cool :)
I suspect there must be *some* evidence for it, but that it was nothing like as common as we wargamers like to show it. :)

There is evidence, and interestingly it points to painted helmets being something common soldiers did rather than the wealthier nobility. If you had money, it seems you paid to have your armour polished to a high sheen. If you didn't have money but still wanted it to look cool, you painted it yourself! There's definitely museum examples of sallets painted with chequer-board patterns, the actual shape and construction of the helmet itself being on the lower end of the scale. There's a good lecture Tobias Capwell on this subject which can probably be found somewhere on youtube.

Lovely painting! :)
I’m pretty sure the Modern History channel on youtube has a video about wearing plate armour where the presenter talks briefly about paint being found on late medieval armour beyond just helmets.
I paint some of the livery colours on the helmets and sometimes even the back and breast.
I’m not expert, and am not trying to be, so I don’t mind some conjecture when painting my toy soldiers ;)
