I've wanted to start a fantasy project for a while, but I've always been put off by all the buildings and trees I'd need for a 'European' fantasy world. But I've got plenty of desert buildings for Pulp gaming, so I've finally taken the plunge with a desert fantasy project this year: bits of Conan, bits of Sinbad. Here's the first group: the Cult of the Violet Shadows. My photography could do with a bit of work, but you get the idea! Miniatures from Harwood Hobbies.

Thanks guys! The white face is copied from the photos on Harwood's site. I wouldn't have thought of it, but I really like the look of it.

The terrain is freshly painted too: from GW's Warcry. It works really well for this setting.

Good color scheme and nice sculpts on that first group but the Sinbad characters in the second group really steal the show. Especially nice brushwork on the fellow in the mask. But then I have a soft spot for that classic movie.

Excellent point! I recall asking people on a different forum which genre or period required the least terrain work, and the answer was also a desert environment.
QUESTIONS:
Do you have plans to scratchbuild sand dunes? If so, what types (domed, barchan, parabolic, etc)? And how do you plan to make them?

Harwood do a Caroline Munro in 28mm, but I'm not sure about 15mm.
I have no plans to make dunes: I don't think you'd be able to fit many onto a 3x3 table in a convincing way. I'll probably just create undulations under my mat.

I’m also looking at the Amera sand dunes. They look excellent in the photos I’ve seen, and don’t look like they would overwhelm a 3x3 table.

Thank you Blackwolf. It's a bit hard to tell in this photo, but I don't think this is a Munro figure (wavy hair rather than straight!)
What rules did you have planned?
Pulp Alley are my go-to rules for cinematic skirmish, so I'll be using them. You get to stat up your own characters, and it's interesting that I'm noticing a whole range of character abilities that I haven't used in other settings. I'm encouraged that it means the games will have a distinctive flavour.
PS. I’m still looking for tips on how to scratchbuild sand dunes:
For dunes like Amera's, I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard to sand blue foam into those kinds of shapes.

Blacksoilbill I like your choice of palettes and setting (terrain can be draining when needed in large amounts - which it nearly always is) desert is a good choice for an easier terrain to-do list - I started WW2 Tunisia for this very reason and have ploughed through the terrain side and I’m nearly done, now I just have all the little chaps to paint up :D I bought the warcry set and was equally as impressed as you with how usable it is (and the lack of excessive skulls nonsense).
Cacique Caribe what mat or surface are you using? If you’re using a good soft, drapable mat I’d go with BSBills idea of blue foam sculpted into shape and placed under the mat. I’m using cigar box battle mats and have a stockpile of foam in the shed intended for this very purpose as they flow over things put beneath them excellently. Also Peter Pig do naked ladies in 15mm as dressable dollies which you could sculpt the details over to make Caroline Munro. I haven’t seen them (one of the few things not pictured on the website) but I’m considering some soon to dress as AWI civilians - if you want I could have a go at detailing one up suitably?

For the ocean surface, I went with the “sunny” Caribbean vinyl mat (36” x 72”) from Mats by Mars. I wanted a surface that would help “glide” the ships smoothly.

I’ve been working on making mangroves*, sand bars and a section of coastline. The base for those is EPVC, about 3mm thick for the smaller pieces, then built up using pink/blue foam (expanded polystyrene)
For the deep desert areas, I bought a 3’ x 6’ neoprene mat from Urban Matz. It looks fantastic.
As for a sculpted 15mm Ms. Munro, the closest thing I’ve found is the Dejah Thoris princess from Fighting 15s. I also have another potential one, it is the high priestess from Crom’s Advil. I haven’t painted either of them yet, because I’m still waiting to get my cataracts removed. But they are top on my list.
I’d still love to see what you’d come up with. Neither of the figures I have sports an Indian/Persian “vest” top and puffy silky leg attire/skirt. :)
