I started this project ages ago but now I fancy carrying on with it. I've been dabbling in and out of it for years but this year will see some steady progress (I hope lol )
The basic premise is that after some attacks on British diplomats in the later 1850's by Shogunate troops the British have had enough and have sent over the 31st Regt of Foot stationed in China along with some attached artillery and cavalry. The Americans have also been persuaded to join in and there's the potential for some French at a later date (if they bother to show up lol ).
First off are the Japanese troops I've completed so far. They are all Bac Ninh Miniatures with the exception of two of the command figures, one of which is a Perry ACW officer with a suitable head, the other is a Copplestone officer; again with a head swap. The artillery are Perry plastics with head swaps and the addition of the little insignia on their arms and the cavalry tester is again plastic Perry with a head swap.
The Shinsengumi are Bac Ninh as well apart from the chap in the middle front who's a Perry.
Brits to follow next when I've sorted out their new banners and then the Americans :)

Sounds interesting, always wondered about gaming something like this after reading about the marines and bluejackets storming an artillery stockade in the 1860's.
-
A good start 8)
-
Beautiful work on those figures and the proposed campaign sounds brilliant.
-
Outstanding work.
-
Superb work mate! ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)

I’ve got a few of the cannon for the Shimenoseki batteries amd will no doubt do some sort of landing party. Need to get some more naval brigade sorted first though.

Nice project :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Excellent ! Will be following this closely.
-
Thanks :)
Got to add some banners for the Brits then they can be posted.
-
Got the flags sorted for the Brits. They're Crimean (from GMB) I think but close enough for what I want (as previously mentioned, I'm going for the 'look' rather than accuracy).
Just the one battalion at the moment (all Perry) but I've got the figures for another. The 12 figures are a mix of manufacturers that can be used for more narrative skirmish games and yes, those are the characters from Rorkes Drift :D

I love it,,,yet another conflict to paint...
-
Beautiful brush work! Great figs as well.

Great Project!
Funny .. a few day ago a friend of mine introduced me to his Russian-French-British-Japanese Napo Project, he is working on.
A few years after Nelson's failure at Trafalgar Japan is the new Peninsular War Setting. I think Sharpe is still using a "metal bar" instead of a katana.
-
Nice job on those. The shinsengumi are lovely figures and they've turned out great. What figures are you going with for the Americans?
-
Thanks again :)
I think Sharpe is still using a "metal bar" instead of a katana.
lol

Foundry Opium Wars brits with a different paint job for the marines and some Perry BIF Canadians for the regulars. I've nearly finished a battalion of marines but the regulars will take a while.
I'll be getting some terrain out next that needs finishing off :)

Now that's something which I'd love to see done. Have you ever read about "the Phaeton Incident"?

Ui! That interesting! Thanks for the link.

Looking great, wish I hadn't sold mine off 😁

I think zouaves didn't but definitely french troops engaged Chosu samurai in battle during the Shimonoseki Straits crisis

Got the first unit of Americans done (with help from Flags of War for the flags). Going to use Canadians from the Perry BIF range for the regular troops.

:o I must say I didn't know about these events.
I just had a look at Gallica (French National Library website) and they have an engraving from Le Monde Illustré (made from a picture from Nadar) showing Japanese ambassadors in Paris in May 1864. It says that one of the ambassadors put on a Japanese war armour because they understood that the French public would like to see it.

Check it on Wikipedia. You have two main samurai vs westerners confrontations :
- The aforementioned Shimonoseki Straits crisis (France, Britain, the Netherlands and USA against Chosu clan)
- The British bombardment of Kagoshima
Aside from that, several french advisors joined the shogunate army during the Boshin War. A Spanish and several Russian war vessel also called port during that time but they were on far more friendly terms
-
This project is a 'what if'. If you want to discuss the actuality of the situation the it would best to start your own thread where you can talk about it :)
-
These look fantastic James! :-*

Thanks :)
I’ve found six buildings in various states of completion and I’ll sort out some photos of them soon enough.
