Title: Painting Hyenas
Post by: randwulf on January 12, 2021, 11:13:11 AM
Hi,

I just got some new additions to my darkest africa bestiary and cannot figure out the appropriate colour to paint my hyenas.  o_o

Paint-wise I mostly have Vallejo and a smattering of games workshop. I would like to get something similar in style to what is posted on the Northstar site (attached)

Regards,
Kev

Best thing would be to go to Google Images, and have a look see what you can find. Sure to be hundreds,if not thousands of pictures of Hyenas, and go from there.
As for colours; a golden brown along the ridge to the Hyenas head, softening to a deck tan progressively fading out with bone/ivory for his tummy. The spots,I would use a dark brown, chocolate brown darkened with black should do the trick :)

What he said. I would definitely not go for the stark contrast of the spots in the example. Go for a darker tone of the base color and then put a black or dark brown spot in the middle of it.

Guys, that picture is from the North Star website, and is what the OP is trying to emulate. He's looking for tips for achieving something like that, he hasn't actually painted them yet himself.

I have those figures somewhere. Once I've actually painted them I might be in a position to provide some help, providing they aren't a complete disaster. Until then I'm not of much use.

Here are mine... I’ve seen pics that show a variation in face color, as well as how varied the spots can be wrt definition.

Ok, so thank you for the suggestions. This is what I have come with. Also the figures at the beginning were not painted by me, they are straight from the NS site, I just wanted a base picture to discuss.

I went for a lighter look to the NS ones.
