Many of my Grand Alliance troops were painted decades ago. I decided upon a refurbishment. Otherwise, my new French would have been too spiffy by comparison. Also, depending upon when the unit was done the painting style varied and the size of the battalion flags differed.
It has meant rebasing but that allowed me to mix figures from Dixon, Gladiator, Essex and Irregular together. Successfully, I think.
I’ve made a start and you can see the first 4 battalions on my blog if it’s of interest.

Very nice, the different manufacturers work really well. :)
-
Thanks Jambo. I'm pleased with how compatible the infantry are. Not so the cavalry sadly.
-
Cavalry in most scales can be a problem, the size of the horse can be the sticking point. :)
-
A great looking refit 👍🏻

Exactly that. Gladiator have some nice WSS French dragoons in stocking caps. Just the job for the LOA period. The horses though are massive. I got some anyhow and put them on Irregular Miniatures horses and they work well. Old Glory also have suitable French dragons and their horses are smaller than the Irregular ones which is great. I did have to green stuff over the riders turn backs but overall it's OK.

A great looking refit 👍🏻
Thanks, I'm currently redoing Kirke's and Trelawney's regiments. Convincing myself that the refit was an opportunity not a chore was half the battle.

My first two English battalions for the Grand Alliance are done. You can see Trelawney’s below.
They are joined by Kirke’s Lambs and the Dutch Blue Guard on my blog. I’ve used a mix of manufactures figures again.

Nice work and some of the most enigmatic regiments of the time, Kirke's must be one of my favourite uniforms of the period. :)
-
Thanks Jambo. Yeah, it's a nice uniform. Kirke was an interesting lad.

I'm contemplating the English cavalry next and of course that means the Oxford Horse and their blue coats.
There's something nagging at me about that unit and helmets and armour. They had at one time worn both. Mostly we think that they stopped doing that before the Jacobite Campaign. On the other hand it was often the case that Williamite infantry storming parties were often outfitted in cavalry armour.
That begs the question where did the cavalry armour come from? I tend to doubt it trundled about with the siege train displacing space for vital munitions and powder. I'm more inclined to think that cavalry armour probably accompanied cavalry squadrons. If they carried it they probably wore it, at least in major engagements.
So far as I can tell some of the Danish cavalry wore breast plates and maybe breast and back. The other candidates would be the Oxford Horse, maybe.
I'm tempted to do the unit in a mixture of armoured and unarmoured troopers. It would look nice but I'm far from sure it reflects the historical reality. Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.
-
I would go for the Oxford horse in armour, no other reason that I think it looks cool! In the blue it's a cracking uniform and breast plate and helmets just add to it, so basically no historical insight just the look! :)
-
There's a lot to be said for doing just that. I could do a mixture of hats and helmets too.
-
Nice unit - Great work!
-
Thanks Hogan.
My first English cavalry here in the form of the Oxford Horse. The figures are a mixture of Essex, Gladiator and Irregular. As you can see I did two squadrons one with armour and one without.
-
The Earl of Bath’s, Sir John Hanmer’s and a fusilier battalion join my collection of English Foot. They are accompanied by the Earl of Oxford’s Horse, both squadrons. The figures are a mixture of Dixon, Essex, Irregular and Gladiator.

More great additions to your ever growing project! I like the fusiliers, very nice and the blue is luscious on the Earl of Bath's, superb!! :)
-
Lovely additions to the army 👍. Great colours across all of the units.
-
Thanks fellows. The blue is Vallejo Dark Blue.

Some progress on my Grand Alliance Army two battalions of Danes and Hugeonots join the ranks along with a squadron of English Horse Grenadiers.
More cavalry next and perhaps some dragoons.

More great additions - super flags as well.
Ah, Vallejo Dark Blue, it looks really good, but the most confusingly named paint, ever! lol
-
Yes, it's an unusually bright dark blue.
I need to do the Horse Grenadiers dismounted too. I think I'm going to tackle the horse holders issue by doing 3 stands of horses and having the holders in various uniforms on separate bases. That way they will work for all the armies in my LoA collection.
