Last Friday I received my all-in pledge of Bloodborne: the Board Game. 12 boxes filled with tiles, tokens, cards and lots of miniatures (around 210). Since Bloodborne is my all-time favourite video game I just had to get all of it...and get stuff painted.
For the first miniature I started with the first boss most players will encounter in the video game: the Cleric Beast. A huge deformed beast jumping down unto the gothic bridge...screaming at you and trying to claw, punch, rake and jump you. I struggled for a long time against him and have good memories of it. So it was the obvious choice for me.
I rebased him on a MDF base with a layer of putty on it. I rolled the putty with a texture roller from Green Stuff World. This will be the type of base for all of the miniatures. The painting went fast with the Citadel Black Templar Contrast paint and some fast highlights.

Next up will be some Scourge Beasts (read Werewolves) and the first hunter.
-
Woah! That guy looks fearsome! Excellent paint job.
Never played the computer game. Is the boardgame a co-op?
-Michael
-
Thanks! Yeah, the board game is a 1-4 coop game in which you play campaigns. A campaign consists of 3 scenarios of about an hour. So nice and fast. I played my first scenario yesterday solo and it plays fantastic. Really love the translation from video game to board game.
And the miniatures are awesome, so I hope to have a nice collection of painted gothic horror miniatures soon :)
-
Lovely work Marijn.
That "all-in" pledge is a monster :o
-
Cheers man! And yes...the stack is absurd. Lots of air in those boxes too, it's the way they pack board games nowadays. I'll probably bring it back to 3 boxes or so (and use the other boxes for other games).
-
I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of the minis painted - especially heroes.
We are living in boom times for nice coop minis boardgames.
-Michael
-
Superb painting Marijn!
For some reason I missed this KS, will have a look at it ( can't remember if Chris backed it or not...) :)
-
Thanks man! The game is really cool, played it Monday and had a blast. It's a nice puzzley game (no dice!) and the story is very cool. And knowing Chris, he probably went all-in eh ;)
-
Sounds good! And yes, you're probably right about Chris lol .

Scourge Beasts
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scourgebeasts1.jpg)
So basically Werewolves. In Bloodborne they are humans who have succumbed to the beast plague, a result of taking the healing blood treatment. So the grand city of Yarnham will be plagued now and then by people who transformed into slavering werewolves. Scary stuff to meet in the game.
For the miniatures I bent two of the fore paws down (one of the few good things about PVC) and glued it to the base. This adds some variation to the models and it fits their pose too. For the eyes I went with the variations from the video game: yellow/white, red and blue. This also makes it a bit easier to differentiate them in the game.
-
And the next one done...going fast now. This time the box art Hunter, the one most players will see as the first hunter in the game. Armed with the deadly Saw Cleaver and Hunter Pistol, clothed in the Hunter set...ready to take on all monsters.
"Oh, thank goodness. You're a hunter, right? Might you know of a safe place? The night is long and I've very little of the incense left... Please, there must be some nice place to run off to?"
You might see the models are quite small, I think true 28mm models. So for nowadays board games on the small side. But I like it! Excellent sculpts and casts and nice and fast to paint.
-
With over 200 minis this could be a long thread.
I, for one, am really looking forward to it as your painting looks great.
-
Cool. I have a strange fascination with the Bloodborne world. A nice mix of 18th(ish) Century fantasy and Lovecraftian dread. Have never actually played the video game, though. Loving these figures.
-
Cheers lads. Yeah, Bloodborne has a fantastic mix of two genres and the transition from the first into the second is brilliant. And with the Kickstarter I now have more than enough cool miniatures to replay certain parts or scenes. I think I will be doing a Rangers of Shadow Deep version of Bloodborne (Hunters of Yarnham or something).
-
They look great :)
I can see the wolfy things being useful for other games.
-
They look great :)
I can see the wolfy things being useful for other games.
Cheers man!
Will use them for sure in Frostgrave, Rangers and in my own game. Very cool models as generic werewolves.
-
And the next hunter is finished...the one in Executioner outfit and with the Gold Ardeo* helmet. He wields one of the heavy damage dealers of the game: the Kirkhammer. It's a trick weapon that consists of a sword for fast attacks that sheathes into the hammer. So you go from fast and dextrous swordplay to smashing enemies to pulp with a huge slab of stone. Lots of fun!
For painting it was interesting because the Executioner's set is extremely monotone in nature...grey, grey and grey! Only the black flappy things add some different colour. But I liked adding the contrast, different colour tones and weathering to him.
*The Gold Ardeo has the following description: "The odd helmet worn by the band of Executioners commanded by the martyr Logarius. The conical gold helmet, symbol of the executioners, represents luminosity, ambition, and an unflagging resolve to face impurity, staring it down with stern golden spirit. As the great Logarius once said, "Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good."
-
These are great!
Really digging the Cleric Beast on the first page too! Keep up the great work!
-
Beautiful job on that hero!
Although the hammer looks goofy - the sculpt, not your fault.
-Michael
-
I agree, it does look a bit silly. True to the original game from what I've seen, though. Lovely paint job.
-
Thanks lads. Honestly, I feel the hammer is a bit small on the model. In the video game it feels even bigger. But that may also be because of the animations, it feels super heavy. It's really fun to swing around and bash the foul monsters to pulp with. Even better if you first rub some fire paper on it (sets it on fire!), then do a charged attack from the back (basically a suuuuper strong attack). Instant fried pancake moment...very satisfying lol
-
And another one done...this time it's Alfred, the Executioner. He's a NPC in the game and he can fight with you in some fights and you can fight him if you act against his insane actions. He's the one of the last known survivors of the 'Executioners' group, a radical group within the Healing Church. Their favoured weapon is the Logarius Wheel, one of my favourite weapons in the game. It's just very satisfying to smash enemies to pulp with a humongous wheel...or to transform it to unleash the souls of the wheel's victims for extra arcane attacks. The description reads:
"Weapon wielded by martyr Logarius' band of executioners.
Used to slaughter the Vilebloods in Cainhurst. Bathed in pools of their blood, and forever steeped in their ire.
Transform to release the power of the wheel and manifest their lingering rage in a show of utter brilliance."
The model is on Thingiverse and my mate printed him for me in resin. A very cool model, but not perfect. But since it's free resin one I don't mind :). You can also see the scale difference between Alfred and the pvc Kirkhammer Hunter from the game. He's on a smaller base, because I based him ages ago on the Renedra bases. For Bloodborne I switched to the home made bases to make it all a bit cheaper, hence the difference.
I will probably be using this model instead of the actual Logarius Wheel hunter from the game as I prefer this outfit.
-
And another one done, it's going fast with these! This time it's a huntress wielding Ludwig's Holy Blade:
"A trick weapon typically used by Healing Church hunters. It is said that the silver sword was employed by Ludwig, the first hunter of the church. When transformed, it combines with its sheath to form a greatsword.
It exhibits several departures from the workshop's design, suggesting that the Church anticipated much larger inhuman beasts."
And it's also the 'Uncanny' version. Each weapon has three versions: default, Uncanny, Lost. They differ in the type of gem slots they have. You use these slots to make the weapons more powerful. Very cool they included the Uncanny version, because this version is often better in the video game due to the gems needed. In addition she wields the Repeating Pistol...a double barreled pistol firing two Quicksilver shots at once. And she is wearing Gascoigne's set, a very nice set worn by one of the first bosses.
So all in all a fantastic design by CMON and also a blast to paint.
Now it's time for some more monsters.
-
Yes! Bring on the monsters!
Loving this thread. I've never heard of this game, but I've been an Xbox gamer. I've been trying to get a Playstation 5 for a while now, with little success.
You painting is fantastic on this!
-
Cheers Vikey! And Bloodborne is a fantastic game...if you're into the Soulsborne games (Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1/2/3, Bloodborne and Sekiro). I know there are a lot of people who hate the style of the game and the way the story is told. But if you're into it, Bloodborne is pure gold. Awesome setting, story and you can spend hours and hours and hooouuurs playing it. I think I've played it for hundreds of hours by now.
-
Hundreds of hours AND you still manage to put out this quality of painting?
Do you even know how to sleep??? lol

Hehehe, a year long lockdown gives a lot of time for both online gaming and painting ;)
**Edit**
And another one done, this time the Huntsman Minion, one of the scarier enemies you'll face at the start of the video game. They are really terrible when you're learning the controls...but once you manage the 'parry' mechanic, they are super easy and a great source of blood echoes (the currency for buying stuff and leveling up) and blood vials (healing potions). Parrying basically means shooting the enemy at the right time during their attack. This stops their attack and brings them to their knees. Then you move up and basically ram your fist into their chest, doing a 'visceral attack', inflicting massive damage. With these Huntsman Minions the timing is quite easy to learn, making them easy to counter.
The miniature itself was slightly converted. I removed his beard (looks more like the board game), chipped the brick and bent his arm to his stomach (and glued it in place). This way I don't end up with four clones, but I will have some variety with the models.
-
And the second Huntsman Minion. Now with his right arm lowered, as if he's about to smash your face to pulp. Also went with different colours to get some variation between the models.
-
And the first of 12 Hunter Mob models done. You receive them as 3 models on one 50mm base, but I am doing them on individual bases so they're easier to use for different games. Not the best sculpts, those faces are quite poor. But still, fun to do!
I will be converting some too, so I don't end up with 4x3 clones. And fortunately the video game offers enough options to get creative with converting :)
-
I was a bit ambivalent about the sculpts when I saw the Kickstarter but wow you really brought them to life. Great work!
-
Cheers man! Yeah, the renders are often a bit underwhelming, but once you receive the models and paint them they really look different from the computer images.
-
Next one went fast...the Female Beast Patient. A big girl under a large cloak. Fantastic to have fun with textures, weird colours and other effects. Really had fun with these, probably my favourite so far!
-
Great colour choice. Really creepy!
-
Cheers man. Yeah, these models are awesome. Creepy and brooding.
And the Bloodborne train continues...and this time with two more Hunter Mob models. I think these are the weakest in the Kickstarter (especially the rifleman), but with some paint they are cool enough.
Not sure which models will be next. Maybe some Church Servants...the rest of the Huntsman Minions...Father Gascoigne? We'll see.
-
Excellent work again! The lighting on the torches is really well executed
-
Thanks man! I've been using AK fluorescent paints for OSL lately and I really like the effect. It gives bright and bold colours and it's perfect for OSL.
-
Great colour choice. Really creepy. :)
-
Incredible brushwork!
-
Cheers guys!
-
Finally some more additions again. This time two Church Servants. Pale menacing guards patrolling around the grand cathedral...clothed in the white clothing of the church. I converted one of them by cutting off the hat, resculpting the hood, giving him a new left hand and reposing his right. This gives some variety and more fun to paint too. And the two of them resemble the duos patrolling in the video game. With a zenithal priming, painting went really fast too.

-
Great conversions and brushwork yet again!
-
Still really loving this. Great painting of some decidedly creepy figures. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Cheers guys. And yeah, these servants are really creepy looking. I think they will make cool jailers and guards in all kinds of games.
I have finished the last two Huntsman Minions. So more brick clobbering ogres!

Next up will be the Beast Patients...true gothic horror!
-
Next up...the Beast Patients. Lovely miniatures and easy to paint due to the excellent textures. I reposed them and added some candles from Mini Monsters to get more variety and vibrance.
The female variants will be next!
-
Yesterday the males...today the female beast patients! Awesome models, the cloaks offer so much room for cool textures and colours. Also bent the arms for variety and added a candle for some funky light.

This thread is really great, a masterclass in making gloomy still pop
-
Thanks man, high praise :)
Now working on some Cyberpunk stuff...but once that's done it's time for more Bloodborne!
-
superb.
-
"Ooh, what's that smell... The sweet blood, ooh, it sings to me! It's enough to make a man sick."
Father Gascoigne...and his bestial form when he transforms halfway through the fight. This is the first real boss in the video game and it sets the bar for the rest. He is a hunter, just like you. So he uses the same techniques and weapons, but at a whole different level. And halfway he loses his humanity and gives in to the plague hidden in the blood and transforms into a bloodlusting beast. That makes him a very tough challenge for a lot of new players and I think all players who completed the game remember this fight well and fondly. So excellent models to paint and fun to do well. The bestial form had to be bloody, just like in the game and artwork.
-
And a quick follow-up, the first of the Church Giants.
These are really huge (it's a 50mm) base and are excellent translations from the video game. But I don't want too many duplicates, so I snipped the stock's model axe (https://images.beastsofwar.com/2019/03/Bloodborne-Church-Giant-CMON.jpg) and snipped it off. With some putty I sculpted flames around his hands, so he now resembles the Church Giant from the Lecture Hall (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bloodborne/images/9/90/Church_Giant_%E2%84%961.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20170915063045) in the video game:
Fun to paint, the enormous white cloak was very interesting to do and the OSL adds some colour and vibrance.
I have a 'normal' Church Giant lined up as the next model.
-
fantastic :-*
-
Thanks man! They still are a lot of fun to do, love how different they all are to paint due to the different type of designs
-
Nice to see this is still moving forward. These are all really creepy. I guess that is a good thing! :)
-
Great painting, really atmospheric 8)
-
Great work, the church giant is fantastic!
You've really nailed Gascoigne too! Keep up the great work
-
Thanks guys! Here's the second one, this time the stock model. So a Giant carrying a huuuuuuge axe. It can be very rough in the video game and in the board game he can one-shot you too. So that should be fun to face off against!
Next up will be the Bloodstarved Beast. If you don't know what that is...you're in for a real Gothic Horror treat :D
-
Great work with what can be a difficult palette. OSL is fantastic in particular.
-
I love this thread, those are so good. I hated those guys the first time I met them in the game.
-
Not played Bloodbourne yet (though done all of Dark Souls) so not familiar with the creatures etc. but they look great and your paint work really makes them "shine".
-
Thank you guys!
And now for a true Gothic Horror monster...the Blood-Starved Beast. A terrifying monster who had its flesh flayed and torn off and drained of blood, now oozing poison and craving blood. An iconic boss from the game and a very hard one for a lot of new players. Fast attacks, erratic movement, and a dangerous poison effect that can quickly kill you.
For painting it was quite easy, but I had a lot of fun with the gorey and sticky effects on him. He stands out from the other monsters, being so sticky and red...but I think it works well on this guy.

Next I will paint some treasure chests and the important lamps for the game, so I can play some fully painted games.
-
Horrible!
-
Great stuff 8)
-
Amazing painting, just browsed all pages and you really get the theme and comors from the game in your painting style :-*
Hope you enjoy the board game, heard some mixed reviews and Dark Souls seem to be better received. I missed this KS myself. At the very least you will have superbly painted horror miniatures for other games!
-
Thanks guys! In general Bloodborne was received a lot better than Dark Souls. It's a much better balanced game, a game takes about an hour, a campaign (=3 games) can be done in a single game and the storyline is very nicely done.
As a total Bloodborne nut (played the game countless times and played hundreds of hours by now and watched hundreds of lore videos and playthroughs lol) I think this is a fantastic translation from video game to board game. And it's one of my favourite games in my collection :). So yeah, if you like the IP I would definitely get the game.
-
That is beautiful, painting well done :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks! And the ride continues...this time with chests and lamps. So not the most interesting models, but they are key elements of each game and especially the lamps are special for all hunters. In the video game you travel from the real world to the dream world (or nightmares...) using lamps. Your hunter kneels at the lamp and gets "teleported" to the dream (a hub) and from there you can pick different locations. So finding a lamp is always a nice moment. A safe haven in the gothic and cosmic horror.
Lamps
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/1200/7238845/bblamps.jpg)
The lamps! Victorian designed lamps raising from the ground...surrounded by small "messengers" (bizarre creatures that originate from the dream in the game). The lamps in the video game are quite odd. They have yellow light when seen up close. But as you move away the light starts to turn blueish/purple, almost like a ghostly aura around the lamps. The Messengers though will be lit with a ghostly pale yellow OSL. So very eerie and weird. But I couldn't see this work on the model, so I kept it to a warm light. A bit too warm for the BB look, but I feel it works this way.
Chests
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/1200/7238819/bbchests.jpg)
These took me a lot longer than I thought, because of how they are designed. Small areas with wood and metal means I had to be careful to keep the colours neat and in the right places. I doubted on using different colours for the chests and cloth and in the end decided to keep them all in the colours of the game (for any BB fans saying the ones in the Isz Chalice dungeon look different, I know but I felt they would be out of place in other areas ;)).
Next up will be two more Church Giants, including a converted one :)
-
And another update, good mojo this week!
This time the third Church Giant...but now with a ball & chain. In the video game this enemy is very dangerous! He has a huge reach, has some crazy attacks and does insane damage. So yeah, he had to be added. So I cut off the stock arms and axe and replaced them with arms from an old Mage Knight model. I then resculpted the cloth around the arms so they would hang correctly around the arms. The ball was fully sculpted with Mag Sculpt in two stages and then I used a sharp tool to cut out the design and some decorations. A Stormcast hammer was cut in pieces for the connector and finally I used some fine jeweller's chain to connect it all together. It went just about how I wanted it, so that is always nice.
And also a group shot of all the finished Church Giants together:
Next up will be the last of the Church Giants!
-
And Church Giant number 4 done, finishing the mob. This time another stock model, nothing fancy. But still fun to paint!
And the four Church Giants together...a scary sight for Hunters!
After doing all that white cloth I am doing some regular Hunter Mobs again!
-
Love these 8)
-
brilliantly done.
-
Six years after all the cool kids, I am finally playing Bloodborne (the video game) myself. I am loving it, but I am also pretty rubbish at it. I am sure this thread had something to do with me finally giving it a try.
Those Church Giants give me the creeps. Wouldn't want to face all four at once. Remind me a bit of those big guys from the movie 'Prometheus.'
-

Hehe, the cool kids are still playing the game Plynkes! At least, I am ;). But it is a tough game to get into if you're not used to the Soulsborne games. But once the mechanics click and you get past Father Gascoigne (that one's hard for a lot of new players) the game becomes easier and more enjoyable to play. And for me, after hundreds of hours I am still deep into it. Currently playing with a Pyramid Head cosplay to get him to max level (level 544) and grinding in the Chalice Dungeons for better gems.
And yeah, the Church Giants are insane when you first meet them. So much damage, so much reach!
-
I killed Father Gascoigne on my third try. On the first two attempts I was backed up to a wall and the camera got stuck in the scenery, meaning I couldn't see anything, resulting in my death. I was rather annoyed, as I didn't really consider that he had killed me, more that the game's wonkiness had. :) The next time I made sure I kept away from the walls and it was a relatively straightforward kill.
If you ever have to paint any more lamps or other structures with Messengers hanging about, it might be fun to do a little converting and give them top hats, or some of the other tat you can collect for them to wear. :)
-
Hey, if you defeat Gascoigne in 3 attempts and the first 2 were death by camera, then you're not pretty rubbish :). Sounds like you have the controls down well! Enjoy the rest man...once you get past Byrgenwerth the game takes such a cool turn.
-
Stunning brushwork! Lovely bases too.

P.S. These embossed sheets might work for making paved “Roman” roads:

Finally an update again. This time two more Hunters: the Burial Blade and the Threaded Cane. The Hunter with Burial Blade is actually a resin model from Klukva Miniatures. Absolutely gorgeous and extremely well cast with perfect detail. It is a bit larger than the official PVC miniatures, but I don't mind. I just want pretty miniatures on the table :)

Looking good!
-
superb paint-jobs :-*

Glad to see this is still ongoing. Lovely.
Now I'm kinda wanting to see Elden Ring in miniatures. Bloodborne and the Demon's Souls remaster are still two of my all-time favourite games, but I think Elden Ring is the top dog now. :)

Yeah, I REALLY want to play Elden Ring! But I first want to have a PS5 to get the best graphical experience...
Not the same, but related: have you seen Bestiarium Miniatures on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/BestiarumMiniatures )? Not exactly Soulsborne copies, but the style is so cool and similar to that of the From Soft games. Really loving them and my mate is printing almost everything from this month to add to my collection of dark fantasy models 8)
-
Oh yeah, those have the From Software vibe all over them, don't they? Love 'em. Would really like to get and paint up some of them.
I was really lucky to totally avoid the whole PS5s playing hard to get thing. Last year I got an email direct from Sony, effectively saying 'we've got a PS5 reserved for you, do you want it?' and so I've been enjoying the gorgeous Demon's Souls remake (and Bloodborne - you can play your PS4 games on it too) and now Elden Ring. Am enjoying Elden Ring immensely.
Also I've played Jedi: Fallen Order, which really really is trying to be Star Wars Dark Souls. So I seem to have totally been captured by Soulsborne and Souls-likes, and it's all your fault, Malebolgia. :)

Hahaha, did you play Dark Souls 3 too? Really recommend it. It's more similar to Bloodborne in play style than oldskool Dark Souls. And it has some epic bosses and areas. And I cannot wait to play all the "old" games on PS5 with way quicker loading times too
I also -really- like Monster Hunter: World. It's somewhat similar in that it's basically a boss fight game and heavily focuses on skilful use of gear, dodges and guarding but it has way more depth in gameplay. It is veeeery shallow in terms of story and has more of an anime style to it, but I am now 450 hours into it and I still have so much more to do in the game. Not the easiest game to get into because of all of the options, skills, weapon variety, etc. but if you like that type of game...it is fantastic!

And three more models done...Hunter mobs. Probably the weakest models from the entire Kickstarter. So not that enjoyable to paint with all the soft detail. I did convert all of them for more variety. So I gave 1 a cleaver and rope molotov, the second a sabre and with the last one I rebent the model to give ita very different pose.

Lovely job, even if they weren't fun to do.
You know, that the firebombs in Bloodborne are called 'Molotovs' in-universe always bothers the hell out of me. It is so immersion-breaking. I mean, do the Soviet Union, the Winter War and Vyacheslav Molotov exist somewhere in that world? Can you walk from Yharnam to Moscow? Oh well, it isn't important. :)

And now for something completely different! But related.
Me and two mates have been playing miniature (board) games for a long time now and some years back we also started with playing coop on PS4...and Bloodborne was one of the games we played and enjoyed a lot together. Last Saturday we met up to play offline again, FINALLY. COVID of course made this hard to do, but now we could get together again to play some Bloodborne the board game for real! And it was glorious. But we also wanted to give the host a cool gift. And we came up with the idea to make blood vials for him, filled with his favourite bourbon: Bulleit. I ordered glass bottles and started weathering with sanding paper and wire brushes. I then made them dirty with some washes. In the meantime I had also made labels in photoshop and died some paper in tea for the best colour. I stuck the labels to the bottles with some Mod Podge and finally added some more washes and stains to finish them off.
Time to fill them! I poured in the Bulleit and then added food colouring to tint the bourbon and make them actual Blood Vials. Pop a cork in and done! I also bought a cheap chest and used wood stain to get that typical dark brown look and now he has 11 blood vials at home.
Later I also found 3 long thin vials at a thrift store and thought these would be great as Iosefka's Blood vials as these are longer and thinner. The whole process remained the same, but I filled it with cheap Glen Taloch as it has a nice yellow colour.
We met last Saturday and the gifts were well received! And of course, we played some awesome games of Bloodborne the board game together. Being able to enjoy some games offline together was such a blast. And he used the Blood Vials as health points in the game, so cool!

Hahaha, I felt the exact same way. It just felt off in a game that is otherwise so good and correct in terms of fluff and lore. Glad I'm not the only one :D
-
Oh wow, what a cool and thoughtful gift.
Though a little too realistic-looking for me to want to drink out of them, maybe. Unless of course I was desperately low on health. :)
-
Cheers man! I am now also working on two more sets for myself, but then filled with dyed mineralised water.
And an update...a fast one! Vicar Amelia. A special boss for me, as this was the first boss I was stuck on for a while in the video game during my first playthrough. I was quite underleveled and wasn't very good at the game yet. So she was HARD and it took me countless of attempts. But in the end she went down and it was glorious. So it felt special to paint her. And it went bloody fast too, less than an hour I think. With some zenithal priming, washes and drybrushes most of the model was completed in no time. Only 5 more and the core box is done for me!

Next up will be the last two Church Servants...both converted!
-
crikey, less than an hour for a figure looking like that ... o_o
you're getting spectacular results.
-
Sweet. Fantastic job.
I have fond memories of this boss. Just looks so cool when thrashing about, and the arena (the interior of a big gothic church where you later also fight a really nasty NPC), is quite memorable too. Unlike you, I managed to get her first try, or in a couple of tries at least (memory is a bit vague but I have no recollection of a frustrating time). I think I must have got lucky, but using fire paper helped too. :)
-
Yeah, it is interesting how different each boss can be. For example, I did Orphan and Gehrman in one attempt, but Maria took me aaaaaages. Nowadays I can kill her in one attempt to with some nifty parrying though. Same goes for Amelia, on my last attempt I used fire paper and a beast blood pellet...and 20 seconds later she was dead 😁
-
Amazing work! Really incredible stuff for under an hour! :o
-
Thanks!! :)
And another update...this time the last two Church Servants, number 3 & 4. As with the others I want to have as few duplicates as possible and to show the variety the video game has to offer with some enemies. So time to convert them!
For the first I used hot water to bend his arm with the staff and glued it to his jacket so it would stay in that position. For the lantern I wanted to have it covered in eyes. In the video game you collect "insight" in various ways and it is a kind of way to simulate your insight into the cosmic truth. Once you gain 15 insight the Church Servants change! The lanterns are now covered with eyes and the Servants fire arcane bolts at you...a very cool and spooky change. So I made a lot of tiny putty balls and stuck them to the lantern by using a thick layer of Mod Podge (I love that stuff). A bit of a pain to paint, but I'm glad I did it because it's such a cool feature from the video game.
For the second one I simply cut off the hand with the lantern and replaced it with a resin hand holding the Repeating Pistol (from Klukva's Miniatures Bloodborne models). Super simple conversion and it's true to the source material as there is 1 Servant sniping with this pistol.
So four Church Servants done and all different. Goal achieved! And only three Hunter Mobs left to finish the core box.

Brilliant work, as usual mate!
-
gosh, missed these latest ones - fantastic :-*
-
Lovely brushwork!
-
Man it's been ages since I added some more models for this project. But this time it's a great milestone, because they are the last enemy models from the core box!*
Three more Hunter Mobs done, in my opinion the worst sculpts of all of the Bloodborne models I have. So I wasn't looking forwards to painting three more. But Yarnham isn't complete without Hunter Mobs! So it was time to finish them.
Hunter Mob

Hunter Mob with rifle
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/1000/7239041/huntermob15.jpg)
So now the core box is done I can do more stuff from expansions! Next up will be Forbidden Woods, mixed with some other models (like Large Huntsman and Dogs). I'm looking forwards to doing these. I will also do some photos of the core box soon and add them here.
*technically speaking I still have 3 more Hunter Mob models remaining...but I really don't want to paint 3 more and 9 is more than enough for the game. So I keep it at 9!

Nice. I see what you mean about those figures, but you have still done a really good job with them. Those guys seem quite innocuous now compared with the actual horrors you meet later, but when you first play the game, go up that one street and there are about half a million of them, it's really scary.
Ugh, the Forbidden Woods! I really don't like snakes. Especially ones that pop out of people's heads. :)
-
Great work mate! 👍
-
yep - can see what you mean about the figures- but you've done such a brilliantly atmospheric job on them, that you have to look quite hard to see that.
Superb painting.
-
Cheers guys! Much appreciated :)
But here is the shot of everything together, the core box with everything in it...quite a lot for me!

And the link to the full image:

And boom! I've got more done too...the Rabid Dogs. Probably the most hated enemy type in any Soulsborne game. Dogs can be such a nuisance. Fast and erratic, they stagger you, and you feel like a total doofus if they kill you lol
The models are okay...a bit dull maybe. But they paint up fast!

spectacular ensemble.
And continued brilliance with the doggies. Love the way a bit of perfectly judged OSL is just tacked on to one of them ...

Amazing work! The lighting and colour palette really captures the Yharnam feel!

The OSL is getting easier and easier to do, now that I am applying it a lot. With fluorescent paints it gets so much easier than with regular paints!
Amazing work! The lighting and colour palette really captures the Yharnam feel!
Getting that typical Bloodborne and Yarnham feel was important, so that is great to read!

I see somebody is making an Elden Ring game in a similar vein to this one...

Yeah, Elden Ring isn't really Gothic Horror (though there is some stuff in there that is pretty horrific), but it is very much connected to this thread.
-
Yeah, also a From Soft game :). But...the board game is by Steamforged Games and these guys don't really have a good track record on -good- board games. They are mostly okay, but often not that great. And I haven't played Elden Ring yet, so for now the Kickstarter is not for me! And the all-in price is insane too lol
-
Oh that's disappointing to hear. They are really pushing this one, I found out about it via a Youtube ad, of all things.
I'd really like to paint some of the more iconic characters from the game, but I don't think I'll jump in on this. Got enough damn unpainted lead and plastic as things are. :)
-
looks like an interesting system in terms of giving the 'open-world' feel etc.
like the idea of the ring-bound books. Conceptually and visually at least - actually playing out the encounters in such a book might feel a bit naff in practice.
-
> But...the board game is by Steamforged Games and these guys don't really have a good track record on -good- board games.
Elden Ring is one of the only Ameritrash games with combat that *doesn't* use dice! :O While I'm interested in anything that does more than throw dice (Gloomhaven fired everyone!), yes, it's expensive to go on KS faith that their card-based system will be good to play. And, while I've heard good things about Guild Ball (which Steamforged dropped because they're now doing IP games :P GB isn't how most gamers were introduced to Steamforged. I have plenty of games and miniatures in the queue, so I'll wait for the reviews.
> The OSL is getting easier and easier to do, now that I am applying it a lot. With fluorescent paints it gets so much easier than with regular paints!
More importantly (: do you have an OSL tutorial or can recommend one? True metal metal is about as good as I can get with this reflective light nonsense (: and would like to do a decent OSL job. I can fake some OSL on high-beam light sources from sf drones... :D
-
And after a long time some more Bloodborne! This time another Hunter...one with the Cainhurst set, wielding the Threaded Cane and a Gatling Gun. The model is by Klukva Miniatures and is a fantasic resin cast. The Gatling Gun isn't in the board game though, as it a weapon from the DLC and CMON didn't do the DLC (yet...?). So I'll probably think of rules for it one day and use this as a proxy for the default Threaded Cane hunter.
Reasonably happy with the model, it's not very special with all that metal armour. But the cloak was difficult. I couldn't find any decent image of the actual pattern used on the cloak, so I just tried some things and then dulled it down with Nuln Oil. Not too happy with the design, but it works...somewhat.
But still, glad to found the Bloodborne mojo again! Already thinking on what to paint next.

@ced1106: totally missed your question OSL. I'll get back to you soon. It'll take a bit of typing ;)
-
And two more hunters done, this time a Choir hunter with Hunter Axe and a hunter in the Charred set with a Chikage and Hunter Pistol. Not the easiest models to paint. 25-28mm with realistic proportions in PVC is...not ideal.

The way I do my OSL on the Bloodborne stuff is to first the model normally, but keep the unlit areas darker and with more blue tones. So a very dark blue added for shadows and a light blue added for the highlights. And for the parts that are lit I use lighter and warmer tones for highlighting. So adding more Ice Yellow for highlights. This gives a nice tonal contrast between the dark and light places. Then I take the fluorescent paints from AK I have. I go from yellow > luminous orange > fluorescent orange > Vallejo fluorescent red. The stuff is very thin and translucent, so it's quite easy to build up the layers and thus the effect. The main thing to remember is that the light source should ALWAYS be the brightest, otherwise it's just wrong. And finally I often add some very dark and stark shading to enforce dark shadows, getting more contrast and a stronger effect. For example in folds of cloth and such.
-
more great stuff.
prompted me to look through the thread again. Fantastic and I see Zatu have got quite of a lot of the boxes in stock at good prices ...
Looking at the ensemble pic you posted a page back - just brilliant - with the OSL so well done as well.
your board/ miniature games threads here on LAF are among my favourites.

Aw cheers man! That's just so awesome to read! Thanks for that comment, that made my day.
I have painted two more Bloodborne models, but have to take pictures. I'll try to do this tomorrow!
-
Love the conversions and the painting in this thread. Had missed it up until now! Sadly, I can't see all of the pictures, do you know if they were hosted somewhere that now made the links broken?

Thanks for the headsup man! I changed webspace, so I had to relink most of them. But I think they work now.
Hope to paint some more Bloodborne this year, they are always fun to do!
