Hello everyone. I got given a copy of the 2nd edition Frostgrave, and while I had put together a warband for 1st edition, I'd never managed to get it to the table.
Here's my warband, put together from a few sprues of the North Star kits, as well as a guest appearance by a couple of veterans from the Old World, sat on a piece of GF9's battlefield in a box terrain.

Given the lockdown I had plenty of time on my hands, so I decided to make putting together a table my first project of 2021.
I had some Hirst Arts casts sitting around from an aborted plan at an AoS table, so I decided these would form the bulk of my Felstad ruins.
You can see the test piece I put together here.

Going forward I'm planning on providing a few updates about my work so far, and the progress I make putting everything together, which I hope will be of interest to everyone here.
Hopefully it won't be too long before I can get a few games in, or at least try some of the solo campaigns.

super stuff :-*
-
:o awesome!!!
-
Thanks all! As I said, I had a bunch of the Hirst Arts pieces so I've done quite a few of these pieces. There's also some scatter terrain, made from the old GW arcane ruins and some Scotia Grendel resin pieces.

Brrr! They look cold. Great work on these.
-
Cheers, it's been a real learning experience!
-
you've really nailed the 'snow'. Brilliant.
-
I've also been repurposing some old GW stuff to help fill out the bestiary.
I think this snotling makes a passable imp.

I really like the last two female minis and how you have painted them. I like the rest as well, but these two stand out for me.
Where do they come from?
-
Thanks! I'm pleased with them too, as I've been trying to push my painting a little more.
The barbarian is from Otherworld Miniatures, and the other one is from Hasslefree Miniatures. Both lovely sculpts with a minimum of clean up needed.
-
If anyone wants some details as to how I made ruins like these for my Frostgrave board
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50925204153_e2fb827d03_k.jpg)
I've put details of my method here: https://tinyplasticpeople.com/2021/02/founding-felstad-part-1/

Here's a couple of glamour shots of my next two warbands.
Sigilist:

Witch:

From left to right.
Bert, who fancies himself as a ladies man, and is inordinately proud of his moustache.
Isadora Grimsbane, drawn to Felstad by her sense of duty and a desire to combat the forces of evil.
Red, who's taken a few too many blows to the head during his time in Felstad.
"We're all gonna" Dai, known for his lugubrious nature and constant predictions of doom.
-
8) way cool...lookin fab!!!!
-
Two fabulous looking warbands. A great choice of minis and cracking paintjobs.
-
They look great, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the recruits! And in my view it is perfectly reasonable for Bert to be proud of a moustache as impressive as that!
-
Thanks all.
Finished up (well, minus the snow) a couple more soldiers.
Here is Angry Ron, a thug who was terribly scarred by a troll attack on his first trip into Felstad, and has now pledged to hunt down and kill the troll that took his eye, and Slick Nick, the thief who says he can pinch anything not nailed down, and if it's nailed down he'll pinch the nails as well.

Finished my witch and her warband.

I went for a cold colour scheme, with various shades of blue and used white as the spot colour. It maybe doesn't make sense that the gaggle of thieves and sellswords that the wizard hires all dress alike, but it does give them a certain impact on the tabletop.

Actually, the color part would make sense for a group...mainly due to making things easier for them in threat differentiation in the middle of a fight...
-
Good idea! That's my story and I'm sticking to it now
-
Really nice work that inspires me to keep learning with my painting.
May I ask, what colour scheme did you employ for the red hair on the dwarf in your first picture?
Cheers
Ryan
-
Thanks Ryan! I did him a good while ago, so I'm not 100% sure of the exact method, but it was primed with citadel wraithbone spray, then a coat of the contrast paint gryphhound orange. After that I think it was a drybrush with Yriel yellow and a wash of fuegan orange.

great stuff.
they've got the vibe alright.

Part 2 of my blog series on my table build is up.
https://tinyplasticpeople.com/2021/03/founding-felstad-part-2/
This time, it's my first attempts at XPS foam terrain:
and how to mix in some pre-painted stuff so it matches the rest of the board.

This is a very nice project, well done.
Incidentally I just stumbled across your blog today, it's very good.
-
Thanks! The editors do all the hard work, I just send them articles every so often.
-
With the stairs, they look great, but you might want to consider adding vertical cuts to the sides to make it look like a brick pattern with that kind of thing.

I agree! Not that it would look bad now, but it could improve it a bit.
-
Yeah, the next stairs I built I did in foam because it was easier to do brick work.
-
Really good to see some of your XPS builds, I'm just taking my first forays into terrain building as well and experimenting with XPS and insulation foam.
I read your blog and despite the problems with warping you mentioned, I still kind of want to try using corkboard for stairs, the textures you managed with it are excellent.
Also, can confirm, arches are hard. Hence I haven't even attempted any yet!
-
I know what you mean, the texture is nice. Using thicker cork will help, or sourcing it from tiles, rather than rolls.
I found loads of great tips for using cork here: https://www.matakishi.net/making-things.html
Hope the terrain builds go well, make sure you post photos - I love seeing different people's projects. (Edit - just saw your thread, nice work!)
-
Cheers :)
Got some more stuff made since that battle, I'll post pictures as part of a battle report. Got to say, I'm still most proud of the Silent Tower build (soooo many bricks!).
Next is a load more scatter type walls rather than individual buildings and a "riser" or two to add more verticality to the maps.
So much terrain to build and so little time!
-
Where might I acquire "fine granite" that you prefer to use for snow ?
Could you tell me how you go about applying it and making it stick to your projects ?
Sorry bout Ron's eye ......
-
I got it from War World Scenics. I mix it with Mod Podge Gloss to form a paste where I want drifts, and then sprinkle a bit more on top to give the impression of freshly fallen snow.
PVA would work as well.

Right now there seems to be a backlog of overseas of shipping container space due to a worldwide cluster pluck caused by the current viral crisis.
I wonder if you or anyone else has ever tried that same method with Powdered Marble Dust ?
I had considered using baking soda however I have read elsewhere that over time it may react with PVA and turn into "Yellow Snow".
-
I got a set of snow basing material from warworld scenics, I've only used them on my custom treasure tokens so far as going back and basing all my miniatures seems like a huge task (when I have so much terrain to make!)
I've attached an image so you can judge for yourself.
-
I've been a bit distracted by starting an Oathmark army, but I've managed to finish my Sigilist and his warband.
We've got Otherworld, Hasslefree, Reaper, GW, Northstar, and Victrix represented here. I wanted them to feel like an old school adventuring party, so I deliberately chose from different ranges and tried to keep the colour schemes varied.
-
that's come out a treat. Fantastic :-*
-
Great looking warband. You have some lovely figures and terrain in your collection.
-
:o wow....awesome warband!!!!
-
Thanks! I've now done 3 warbands during lockdown, and not managed to play a game with any of them!
-
Part 3 of my series is up!
https://tinyplasticpeople.com/2021/04/founding-felstad-part-3/
This time I'm talking about the platforms and walkways I made to add some height to the board.
I'm quite pleased with these as a solution. They should be easy to expand on.
-
:o that looks splendid!!!
-
I love your Sigilist’s warband. Great looking group!
-
That platform has turned out really well - great work!
-
Thanks! It's been fun putting all this together. I need to fill out my bestiary, but I've been a bit distracted by Oathmark.
-
Well, I finally finished enough tiles to lay out a full 3x3.

I've got some bits and pieces of scenery to finish up, and I'm still going to try and round out the bestiary, but I'm going to pause this project while I work on Stargrave, or at least until I can actually get a flipping game in!
-
Its always a great feeling to fill the table with scenery!
-
fantastic looking table
-
A lovely selection of scenery.
-
:D tables all ready to play...quick...switch games...lol...looking good!!!
-
Hey! I'd be playing it if I could. Soon though...
