I just couldn't help myself, I got Adam to knock up a sample of the command for the Byzantine Cavalry and I threw some paint at it, there are a load of small pieces to finish but I think it will be the officer for my first unit.

The first 2 packs for the Byzantine Cavalry have been moulded, they will not go on sale until we add the lancers and archers for the first unit. Next in the production line are 2 more commands. We have tried to limit the amount of separate pieces in these packs and the only separate pieces are the bow in the officers left hand, the standards and the musician in BYZ51 is in 2 parts to allow more variation. The horses are from another new mould and will come with these 2 parks, there are more horses for the next 2 commands. They are H6 and H7 and we may add them to the store down the line. Now that I have the photos of them in grey I can start painting. YO!

I spent all the money that was saved in my PayPal account for this range. It went on an Aventine successor army.
I guess I’m just going to sell a load more other figures to fund my Early Byzantine ambitions!

The next 2 commands have been moulded. Slightly later in period but it is a short timespan so will go with the rest IMHO. New horses H& for them. Shields to be added once we have sorted transfers for them and prior to them being added to the stores.

Keith, these look simply stunning. To help with my budgeting and painting plan can you give a rough idea when the rest of the cavalry will be released? I plan to buy a whole army in one hit Also, I think you intimated a few months ago that Adam may sculpt some Lakhmid/Ghassanid Arabs to be Byzantine/Sassanid allies. Do you know if this is still the intention?

Hi, we are working as fast as we can to get the cavalry packs out but there will be a lot of them, eg 2 packs of Boukellaroi with lance, 2 packs of armoured horse archers, 2 packs of early kavallaroi, 2 of a later style, unarmoured horse archer packs and mounted javelinmen packs.... the list goes on and then add allies and the remake of the steppe range, all this makes giving a firm date impossible, I would hope that most will be in the store by the end of the year. The main units for the range should be ready in around 2 months.
The figures you ask about have not received much attention given the amount of work needed on the cavalry, I will remind Adam of the plan again so it remains on the table for later.

stunning miniatures but what else could we expect?
Please do not forget the Lombards and mostly the Heruls as nobody ever made them! There is a likely representation of one Herul light cavalryman in Justinian's wars ( Montvert Publications).

I've got several rules sets that I'm trying to accommodate with the basing. It's possible for me to set up for Swordpoint, Hail Caesar, Morten et Glorium and Impetus. I'm sure I could fudge a few other rules sets in there if needed.
Of course, thanks to the trials and tribulations of the last year I haven't actually rolled any dice in anger with my Early Byzantines :'(

Mine arrived today. To say they are stunning is an understatement.
It is joyful to have some brand new figures to paint. And the new, slightly bigger, horses are fantastic. On both the riders and the armoured horses, the detailing in the armour is so well defined, and there’s just enough variation in each pack to make the unit look regular, but at the same time, very realistic. Well done Keith and Adam!

What a beautiful army: it will really stand out on the table top. And it is such an interesting, unique one.
The new releases look exquisite. I've already gone in feet first on the infantry range and will do the same with the cavalry.
I second the shout for some packs of Heruls, Lombards and perhaps some "late Goths" to enable the Italian Gothic wars to be gamed!

Keith, although I understand Hincmar’s request for more Goths, please, please ask Adam to produce some early Arabs. Goths ( admittedly not specifically 6th century) are pretty well covered by other manufacturers in both metal and plastic. Arabs suitable for Byzantine/Sassanid Ghassanid and Lhakmid allies plus “early Arab conquest” are rare if not non-existent.

I love your army, I like how you painted them, Early medieval byzantine army is my dream army I have no idea when I will be able to paint. At the moment I am finishing 3 armies simultaneously, Saxon, Vikings and Normans, after that I have planned to move to 17th century Caribbean theme so I have no idea when I’ll come back to 10th century Byzantines and Muslims but I am longing to paint those heavy cataphracts.
