Title: eMills Supers 3D Sculpts (Slugfest, Supersystem) December 8 '23
Post by: eMills on February 06, 2021, 11:51:45 PM
Hello all.  This thread will be for showing my Supers genre sculpts and figures.

I picked up Slugfest! recently and am excited to try the game, but I haven't got any Supers figures currently (that I know where are anyway), so I thought I would sculpt some.

Here is what I have so far:
Captain Phoenix

Big Pharaoh 6

Mr Jaadoogar

The Morphoid

Th art in the rulebook is relatively loose and sketch-like, so I am doing my own interpretations.  Not meant to be exact to the book art.  3D Prints and painted figures eventually.

Thanks everyone for stopping by.  Comments and Criticism welcome.

Nice work. The Morphoid is my favourite. After finishing the spikes like the right arm it should look amazing!

Thanks!

In addition to finishing the spikes, I intend to give him a texture all over his body.  Something akin to a rhino.

Holy smokes! Awesome! Any chance I might somehow trade for or purchase these STL's when they're ready? Amazing!  :o

Nice stuff! I've been learning Z-brush during the Pandemic. Do you do the base meshes yourself or get off the shelf ones? Done any printing yet?

Scott, you are most welcome to whatever I manage to produce.  If I knew when I would be in Pittsburgh next, I would deliver prints to you.  Happy to give you STLs or mail you prints if I can get some good ones.

I'm reasonably certain that I have every ruleset that you've ever written (except Supersystem 3rd, can't find that PDF and Wargame Downloads doesn't keep files for you).  Lol.  Getting you STLs or prints is the least I could do to pay you back for countless hours of fun.

I'd also love some feedback on my modifications to the design.  PM me if you have any input.

Thanks.  Initially, I grabbed some royalty free base meshes, but moved to using my own creations.  I use the other stuff for reference sometimes still but I don't use them in any finished products.

There is other WIP work and a couple prints in this thread (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=117241.msg1467227#msg1467227).

Had a look at the other thread; some very cool stuff. Superheroes aren't my thing, but I can appreciate the quality of the sculpting.
I see you had trouble with mail, which I ran into as well this last month. Looks fine on the screen, prints out soft/shallow, at least that was my experience. Did you find any solution?

Thanks again.

I might have a solution to mail, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I'll post in that other thread when I do. Part of my issue is that I want it to print well but still have some amount of verisimilitude. We'll see whether I've cracked it or not. Lol.

Thanks Scott.  I was hoping to have a print to show but it failed and now I have to change the FEP in my printer so it will be a little bit yet. :(

I have done some work in the meantime:

More awesome work! Thanks for showing them off!
Thanks Scott.  Hope nobody is getting bored with just screengrabs for now.  Haven't had any time to play with the printer recently.

Decided to rework Big Pharaoh 6 and Captain Phoenix.  The anatomy was wonky and bothering me.  Plus, I decided to drop some costume elements from BP6.

Captain Phoenix:

Big Pharaoh 6:

I also got pretty far on a design for the G.U.A.R.D. Tac Team:

And their Plasma Rifle:
Plain old small arms just won't do against Supers after all.

That's all I have to share for now. Thanks for stopping by.

So, I picked up a Sonic Mini 4K.  After having to return the first unit due to power supply issues. the second one is performing excellently so far.  Quick, and slightly crappy (sorry) pictures inbound.

Mr Jaadoogar (Slugfest):

Head and cap are a separate piece.  Blutacked on for this picture.

Other prints can be found in the other thread (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=117241.msg1651922#msg1651922).

Scott, I PMd you here but it did something weird so you may or may not get another message from me.  It is the same thing I emailed you though, so feel free to ignore it if it does show.

Love that one most of all. :)

Well done. :)
Thanks so much Leon!  I am adjusting the sculpt a bit so it prints better.  I'll update here when I have something to show.

Edit:
Since I have been working a bit more on various supers I thought I'd show updates on a couple:

The Siberian (Supersystem)
Detailing to do but pose and proportions are pretty well set.

Big Pharaoh 6 (Slugfest)
Redid proportions a bit and am working on costume details.  Lots to do before final pose.

The Blue Raja!

You could make a line of Mystery Men inspired models for Slugfest!   lol

On a more serious note, I am jealous of folks who can make and design models like this and then print them up.

Thanks! Mystery Men was awesome!  Haven't watched it in awhile.  Definitely need to dig it up and watch it again.

If you want to learn how, Blender is free and there are lots of great tutorials on YouTube.  Not gonna lie though, the learning curve is pretty steep.  Printers just keep getting better too.  Soon I'll be able to print master quality figures at home.  It's very close now, but the next wave of tech will probably get it there.

Fantastic! That second Siberian is amazing! Very crisp results! Can't wait to see Hardcore. When we originally had her designed, I asked that she be heftier, thicker. But Bob Naismith (who I love to death) had it in his head to make her slighter and wasp-waisted. Oh well.

Now she will have her proper heft!

Thanks Scott. They did turn out pretty well, but there were some support issues on them so I need to fix that and reprint.

Hardcore strikes me as an MMA fighter mixed with a Powerlifter. She will definitely have heft!

Thank you. Mr Jadoogar is definitely a pulp friendly design. 😁

I have no right to offer them for sale. Scott may want to explore that at some point in the future, but that will be up to him.

Thank you. If it wasn't for the support issues, I'd say they were pretty near perfect.

Count Bedlam WIP

Not a lot of free time lately so no test prints, sorry Scott.  I should be off next week so hopefully I'll be able to pop some out then.

I've been working on making a base mesh to speed the process of creating new characters up and finally have something that I like to work with. That should help me get sculpts done much faster.

Cracking work. It's not easy picking up software with steep learning curves but your making a great job on these. I particularly like Big Pharaoh 6, he strikes me as a more brutal version of King Tut from the old Adam West Batman episodes.

Thanks! I finally feel like I have a good handle on the software. Now it is a matter of grinding out pieces to improve my skills. Nowhere near the quality level I want to be at yet.

I have seen some of the AW Batman episodes, but I don't really remember that villain. I will definitely look him up though.

Your digital skills' evolution is impressive. Love some characters and how you give movement to them. I'm a beginner in Zbrush and posing the figures to give them natural compositions is hard. Your work is an inspiration, thanks!

Thank you so much.  I appreciate that.  I try very hard to make my poses look fluid and natural.  I very much admire Kev White's (Hasslefree Miniatures and now Forge World) abilities in this area.  He is, in my opinion, hands down the best at it.

Keep at zBrush.  The interface takes a bit to get a handle on but once you figure it out, it can do pretty amazing stuff.  I recommend a few YouTube Channels to anyone who asks (I know you didn't, but...)
Official Pixologic (https://www.youtube.com/c/PixologicZBrush)
Lots of good artists posted to this channel.
Michael Pavlovich (https://www.youtube.com/c/MichaelPavlovich)
Pretty sure this guy knows everything there is to know about zBrush. Awesome channel for learning.
Mike Thompson (https://www.youtube.com/c/michaelthompsonmiketartworks)
Amazing sculptor.  Cool to just watch how he works in my opinion.

Thanks again for dropping a comment.

Yep.  His work is very good, and interesting to watch (to me, anyway).

I've seen stuff from that app and it looks pretty powerful given what it is.  I'd love to try it but my iPad is a 1st gen with not a chance in the world to run Nomad. lol  I do have a Surface that I work on (using zBrush).  Very handy for downtime at my day job.

Some recent updates:
Big Pharaoh 6
(https://i.imgur.com/uPrsFNA.jpg)
Almost done.  Need to finish detailing the feet and then check him over for potential print issues.

Cobalt
(https://i.imgur.com/qkVxSd5.jpg)
Still early but a solid start.

Count Bedlam
(https://i.imgur.com/nPWV7gt.jpg)
Pretty much done except for the hands and some cloth detailing.

The Warriors
(https://i.imgur.com/J5Y5TjK.jpg)
Early stuff.  I really like the idea of them being completely faceless mooks.

Perun
(https://i.imgur.com/VqXs71B.jpg)
Coming along nicely, but still a little ways to go.

Krieghunde
(https://i.imgur.com/5wpDQWu.jpg)
I was searching for ideas and I ran across a picture of M. Bison from Street Fighter.  Perfect base to take inspiration from.  Add a dash of Cobra Commander and a pinch of Imperial Guard Commissar and I think I have a workable design.

That's all for now.  Thanks again everyone for stopping by.

Bunch of new or updated stuff since I last posted.
Updated:
Ox.  Updated him to have better anatomy and proportions.

Count Bedlam.  Details added and updated to be more print friendly.

Fenris from GAROU.  Reworked to the point of almost being a new figure. lol  Basic figure is a cross between Lemmy Kilmister, a werewolf beginning his change, and a 1%er biker.  Also shown is the start of his full blown werewolf form.

New:
Stone Flower.  Heavy hitter for the Crusaders of Crime.  Still early but very happy with proportions and pose.

Zoya of the Red Patriot Movement.  Still working on her details, which is why there is a star on her chest and her belt.  Not sure which place I want it.  As with Stone Flower, I am pretty happy with the pose and proportions on her.

Shieldmaiden of Freedom's Five, a WW2 era team.  Pretty good start on her detailing so far.  Scott wanted her to have a Dutch Partisan look, and that is the direction her uniform is heading.

Druid.  Also from Freedom's Five.  Still early.  Historical Druid meets Gandalf with a sprinkling of modern day priests.

Major Meteor of the Peace Force. A little bit Malcom Reynolds, a little bit Rocketeer, with a splash of Han Solo and an old school diving helmet.

Saber Skull, of the Cult of Super Assassins.  Mask is 100% done (and based on one of my favorite pieces of art), the rest is just beginning.

Toga Wearing Space God.  Very early.

That's enough for now I think.  Thoughts/critique always welcome.

Well thank you, that is very flattering. The beard is a Dynamesh sphere pulled in to shape and then worked with the Orb Cracks tool.  The helmet is lots of time with ZModeler. It is also not all one piece.

I've been working on some Fantasy sculpts and GI Joe stuff as a break from supers for a little bit.  I'll definitely post again when I have more to show.

Thanks again for dropping a comment.

Yeah, that's fair.  I do have some prints that I need to clean up.  Hopefully I'll have time in a couple days.

I would love to hear feedback on the designs too, if anyone has any to offer.  Are they too close to an existing character?  Too over the top?  Just bad in general (and why)?  That sort of thing.

The renders look good, none of the proportions look obviously wrong (although with Superheroes I guess anything goes), there is enough detail to make an interesting painting exercise without obscuring the figure and each of them has a unique character. I like that you have kept the poses relatively static, I think models at extremes of movement and balance look awful on the table.

It is difficult to comment on the merits of the concepts shown as you are working to a customer brief no?

I look at Superhero figures from a "Godlike" or "Achtung Cthulhu" game basis, purely for WWWII so appreciate more understated character ideas (less outlandish costumes or appearance), 1940s era Humans with limited special abilities.
For example I could see Shieldmaiden (with an ornate spear) as a Valkyrie inspired talent or Major Meteor as a Black Sun cult Nazi scientist/technician.
Hardcore or the reworked Zoya would not work at all for me as their modern fashion hairstyles are out of place in a 1930s/40's era setting.
A World War 2 period team based on clothing/style from that era would be great.

This is very good feedback.  Thank you.  I am trying to maintain some verisimilitude in all my figures, no matter how fantastic their genre.  I am also trying not to load the figures up with too much detail.  Interesting but not busy is what I am aiming for.  Sounds like (for you anyway) I am hitting close to my mark.

I really don't like extreme poses or tactical detritus either, so I will avoid it like the plague.  Those are the main reasons that I skipped the Marvel Zombicide and have thus far not purchased any Crisis Protocol miniatures.

It is difficult to comment on the merits of the concepts shown as you are working to a customer brief no?
Not really, no.  The closest thing that I have to a design brief is the Supersystem character profiles and the old Superfigs line itself.  Most of those were relatively simple designs.  I try to reference back to those when I feel it fits the character.  I do check with Scott to see if he wants any major alterations once I have started a design, but largely I am working from scratch.

I am definitely a comics aficionado, but I am far from an encyclopedic source for the character designs.  I am trying not to come too close to existing designs, but I have obviously not seen every character in every book, so I hope folks will point out if I do get too close.

I love Weird War 2 and will eventually be doing a lot of stuff for that genre.  I have tons of ideas.  I just need to get my skill level and speed up a bit.  There will definitely be other designs from the Four Color Earth that will fit with that time period though.

Thanks very much for taking time to comment.

OK, I assumed Scott's comments meant he was commissioning the new range. More impressive that you are coming up with the designs yourself, as well as doing the digital work.
I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with when you turn your skills to WWWII figures.
I am struggling to even get a halfway decent looking 1942 "Captain America" done on HeroForge. Not my area of skill at all  :?

Oh I forgot that I use the artwork in Scott's various rule sets for inspiration as well.  Just to be fully up front.

This all started as a creative exercise for me really.  I enjoy Scott's rules, I love Supers, and I wanted to practice design and zBrush sculpting.  Superheroes offer anatomy practice, posing practice, and general sculpting practice.  Scott was kind enough to play along and now we are discussing getting the figures into production.

WW2 Cap is one of the figures that I would like to make, so maybe I will start one soon.  If I do, I'll see that you get the stl file so you can get him printed if you like.  No promises on speed though, my life is unpredictable in when I get free time.

Thanks!  He is a quintessential villain from what is written about him in the Slugfest rules, so I tried to bring that across to the sculpt as best I could.

Got some decent prints.  I need to make a few sculpt adjustments on Bedlam to make a better final product.  Some of his details are pushing what I consider acceptable once they print.  Zoya came out really well.  Just need to adjust the supports for her and she is good to go I think.

I'll try to get good pictures of everything I have printed tonight so I can post it here.

I must confess that, when at first I saw your sculpts of the Count and Zoya, I though certain details in their anatomy are too exaggerated. As I am learning how to sculp in Zbrush, I use to sculpt soften details. Fortunately, your castings teach me how wrong I am. The details look fabulous and crisp, and it seems that I need to insist on some areas without fear of being too much sharp before printing them.  I suppose that, at the end, is a trial and error thing.

May I ask which printer you use? I am thinking in an Anycubic Photon Mono 4 for myself.

It is definitely trial and error. Sculpt some stuff, print and see what works. Adjust sculpt. Repeat. It definitely takes a bit to get used to what needs exaggerated and to what level.

Currently I use a Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K. I will be upgrading to the 8K soon though. Want to squeeze every last little bit of sharpness out that I can. I haven't checked in about 6 months but I believe the Phrozen printers still have the best pixel density (PPI or pixel size) on the market.

Got my airbrush supplies and some new paints.  Also got my Sonic Mini 8K Printer, so lots of behind the scenes type stuff to do.

For now, a quick shot of Bruiser Benning that I put some base coats on:

Not the best shot (got some stuff to help with that too hopefully), but I was excited to see how nice these Scale 75 metallic paints are.  I thought it would be neat to see his costume in all metallic colors.

This is what the illustration in the rulebook looks like:

I picked up some Contrast paints that I will use for the face and hair.  Hope to have time to finish him soon.

Still around and doing some more work on Supers again.

Jaguaro:
Trying to make him look like a superhero version of a Jaguar Warrior.  Really trying to avoid making him a Not-Black Panther.  My idea is that his Macuahuitl are manifested weapons similar to Psylocke's.  I may try to print him in a translucent resin if I can find good ones.  Then paint everything except the weapons.  Might work, might not.

I finally also have an ok setup for photos, so once my day job calms down a bit, I'll hopefully have some decent pictures of physical models to share.

Thanks for stopping by.

Just curious, but have you tried down scaling a print to 15mm-18mm.  I know much of. The detail would be lost, but it looks like most would downsize effectively.  This is one advantage of the poses not being overly dynamic is my guess. Your efforts might convince me to get into 3d printing.......

I really have enjoyed watching your progress,.  Hard core and Zora are my favorites so far. I'm glad  you went with the star on the chest.....  keep them coming.

Thanks!  I appreciate it.  Please feel free to give any other design feedback you might have.  No promises, of course, but I am always open to ideas.

I have not yet tried down scaling, but it is something that I have considered.  You are correct that the less action-oriented poses would make this easier too.

3d printing is fun, but be aware it is an entire hobby in itself.  I definitely think folks who are interested should try it out, but I don't want anyone to be blindsided by the amount of work still involved.  Not quite to the plug-and-play stage yet.

Some updates:

My favorite super criminal biker and werewolf, Fenris:
Benning and 6ft Guy as usual included for scaling purposes.  Also, that is a 25mm base Fenris is on.

Getting close to a final design I am happy with.  The pants he is wearing will be common to all the GAROU/Agency operatives.  Will be similar to SHIELD outfits from the comics, but not direct copies, of course.

Toga Wearing Space God had his proportions adjusted a bit.  Still playing around with ideas for the costume.  He is on a 40mm base here.

Some work on Krong.  He is pictured here on a 40mm base, and with the original sculpt I did to show how much better the new one already is.  lol

The basic details are done here I think.  Pose, how much clothing, and which weapon he has, etc.  I'm still trying to come up with details for all those things that don't push him too close to Hulk during the Planet Hulk run.  I also want to be sure to tie him (and The Warriors) back to the Alien Host, since that is how they were introduced originally.

GUARD Power Armor on 25mm base next to Benning and 6ft Guy for scaling.

Finally a design that I like.  This is another one of my favorite scifi tropes (Power Armor Soldier) so I am being super picky.  I also want to use this design as a base for a PA Troop to use with Union forces from the VOR: The Maelstrom game (with suitable differences to the 4 Color Earth version).  VOR was probably my favorite wargame in the 90s, closely followed by Warzone.  I have been gathering lots of ideas to update the VOR designs recently, which is why I have been working on this figure again.  More on that project later.

Anyway, for the 4CE version, I will add details to tie them to Rigger, who in my headcanon is responsible for all the GUARD tech.

Thanks again everyone for stopping by.

Sculpt update on the GUARD Power Armor:

I am thinking that the dome will be clear or tinted instead of a solid piece:

I have a test print done, but the paint on it got messed up, so I am stripping it right now.

Sorry the pictures are so blown out, but I don't have time right now to do better ones.

Zoya is so badass! They all look great, but she’s my fave!

Thank you.  The pictures are super dodgy, but I was in a hurry.  I'm glad folks like them even in spite of that.

She definitely came out really well.  And I really, really need to get more prints to you soon.  Sorry, been another crappy year.

This is a bit of a slow burn project because of how busy my life is.  Still working on everything, but it is all dependent upon my free time.

Scott and I would both like to release these at some point but I'm not certain when or how just yet.

Happy taking it slowly on this. It's a dream project and I am so glad it's happening! Take your time!

Thanks for being so patient Scott.  My life seems very fond of curve balls...
