Hi All,
The local historical scene is not to my taste. I wondered what the current competition rule sets were/likely to be in the next year or so? Thought I might get a few games in at upcoming conventions (as & when). Previously found games a-plenty in 40k, but my historical S are calling to me from the loft . . .

It may be good to detail which historical periods you are interested in.

18th century, ancient/dark ages, skirmish. All in 25/30mm, as the smaller scales are wearing on the eyes :x)
Recently picked up some 1/72 SCW for Que!, though I doubt that would count as ‘competition’ rules.

I don’t know if your answer implied just “skirmish” rules. From what I know the most popular “small unit” ancient medieval rules are “Saga”. This has a core rule book and then period specific books. These currently cover “Hannibal”, the “Viking” period and the Crusades. For 18th century small unit games either “Muskets and Tomahawks” or Two Fat Lardies “Sharp Practice 2” are both popular.

I don't think there has ever been much of a scene for tournament gaming for historical (pre 20th C) skirmish in 28mm.
Most ancients / medieval tournament games are mass battle games played in 15mm.
The rules that are currently popular would depend a lot on your local area. On the Madaxeman's website there are yearly updates on the competition scene in the UK. Here's a recent one:
