Title: Falklands war build- Argentinian Dassault Mirage IIIe update 28/2
Post by: bluewillow on February 22, 2021, 07:15:06 PM
Blaming Dougie for this one!

Wet and cold today so no gardening this morning, not inspired to paint really as I am slogging my way through a big Cuirassier commission. At lunch I decided to go upstairs and pick up a few kits and spied a old Dassault Mirage IIIe Frog kit, so bought it back down, opened the box and away I went!

Should get it together easily this afternoon including  the pilot and cockpit completed!

Now I need to find some suitable decals for the Argentine Mirage IIIe for the Falklands.

Cheers
Matt

You have made that old Airfix kit really fantastic.

I was very happy to see this!

As I have made a small start at doing a 1/72 Falklands project. Do show and tell more...

I am also still looking at what rules to use so suggestions welcome.

Thank you, the hardest to get was decals for the gruppo and the 8th squadron.

I am using for rules Able Archer which is based on rapid fire, but I do want to try the new Northtag rules coming out.

For miniatures I am using a few different brands Elheim, and RF models a mix of resin and plastics for vehicles for the Brits. For my argentines a mix of Elheim and RF models, resin and plastics too.
I hope to start painting Infantry next month and will update here as I go or on my modern/ww2 blog.

Cheers

Look forward to seeing that. I will have a look at the Northtag Rules. I like the sound of them as they are similar evidently to the excellent WWII Battlegroup rules.

Completed, really happy with the build, went together ok, did need some putty, but sadly my squadron putty had dried out and I tried to resurrect it, sort of successfully. I added a wire through the centreline to attach to my flight stands for jet aircraft. If I was building a display piece I may of spent more time on it, but this model is a poor example of the dassault Mirage III, requiring major changes (wheel hub location, rear tail alignment, panel scribe detail and tail deflectors etc. The paint went on well and happy with my camo work, added the extra fins to the missiles to make them look more like the magic 550 missile. I did fek up with the clear varnish and forgot to mask the canopy for the matt finish.....oh well still serviceable. Decals were the biggest problem but saved by and a big thanks to my mate Robin for saving me, as Hannants are not delivering to France at the moment.

Built as a Mirage from Grupo 8 de caza I-1003 with the yellow tail marking for the falklands war

What a great idea could you provide extra details.

The holidays are designed for a couple to have a holiday in Pays de Loire, France. An opportunity to visit the historical battlefields and chateaux of Western France, concentrating on Pays de Loire, Brittany and Normandy and battles from Caesar to ww2.

This year will be concentrating on anniversary battles, with packages either for a 3-5 day holiday or walking the local battlefields then returning to Wargame in our fully timber panelled 18th century Salon de Guerre at l’hotel de Hercé, a grand 4 storey 1200 sqm 18th century Maison particular built by Baron de Hercé.

Superb!  No prob re the canopy - just paint it in gloss varnish and it'll clear instantly!  :D

I've never bothered masking canopies since I discovered that trick (by accident).

So when can we expect to see a Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard or anything else for that matter?

Like the gloss idea on the canopy Jemima would never have thought that would work.

This week I decided while building the Dassault Mirage III model that I would make another two flight stands for jets, one for Arid and desert games and one more for more green looking european games.

They are mounted on some MDF octagon shaped 10mm deep pieces that I picked up once in a paint shop clearance about 8 years ago. I left with about ten pieces and then had a Hotz mat made to match them for my WW1 Canvas Eagles 1/72 scale aircraft games and I also use them for ww2 larger aircraft like bombers, and DC3-JU52 para landings. Happy with them, although I may add some more bushes to the arid one I think.
