Title: FEAR OF THE DARK solo horror skirmish wargame
Post by: tereydavi on March 06, 2021, 01:37:56 AM
I would like to share with all of you that after a lot of work I have made a wargame.

FEAR OF THE DARK skirmish wargame

Fear of the Dark is a solo horror skirmish wargame set in the worlds of madness created by H.P. Lovecraft.

Solo as this game is designed to be played solo (or full coop if played by several players)

Horror as the supernatural and the mystery will be the common thread of our scenarios.

In this game you will play a group of characters during 1920-40 fighting supernatural beings and their acolytes who unconsciously try to wake up the long dormant evil, exploring ancient ruins, hiding from shadows that could devour you, and struggling to live another day.

Do you really want to know more?

Are you sure?
Ok, enter at your own risk...

This is a blog created to give info, scenarios, support material...
https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/ (https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/)

This is the link to the facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/fearofthedarkskirmishwargame (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fearofthedarkskirmishwargame)

Right now this game is quite a big deal:

For 11$/10€ you get the full rulebook, eight scenarios and one campaign, more than 260 pages of lovecraftian horror to be played solo (or full coop)

I really hope you like it, as it will make all this effort worthy.

I've enjoyed your The Lone Warrior blog for a while and have been waiting for this ruleset since you announced it.

Just bought and will have a read later with the hope it will transfer easily to a more Victorian Sci Fi/Gothic Horror environment.

If not I still think the purchase of the rules is just reward for your efforts and might start me painting pulp figures too.

I really am going to have to get round to selling unused or redundant rulebooks though.

Just purchased also - have lots of pulpy minis and scenery and a solo based rule set in this genre is always welcome.

130 pages - I look forward to a good read.

As a side note, the support material link on the page does not work for me and general articles takes me to All Express.  Has some weird otherworldly source infiltrated your web page?

Thanks a lot for the support!!!
Thats really motivating!!

The game has just been released, and that´s the reason that there are no more support material or scenarios in the blog...

I plan to post scenarios, battle reports and material as soon as possible.

A player has made a couple of videos while playing two of the scenarios.

In the videos is explained the game system, the activation, how the AI works...

It is set in 1920, but in can be reskined to be played in a western, Victorian or even modern background.

If you want to follow the blog or the Facebook group, I will be posting support material, scenarios...

In fact, I already posted weapon cards so that you can use them while playing the scenarios:

I made a couple posts on the blog about low cost wargames or how to make a gaming table on a budget:

https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/2021/03/low-cost-wargames.html?m=1 (https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/2021/03/low-cost-wargames.html?m=1)

And a post on solo wargaming, as Fear of the Dark is a Solo skirmish wargame, and many times I have been asked about solo wargaming:

Hi tereydavi, I recently bought FotD from Wargame Vault, and am looking forward to playing it - I subsequently recieved notification that the files had been updated & was wondering (as I like to have a print copy to hand), what the changes broadly were. Would it be a matter of replacing a few pages, or should I print the whole thing again?

First of all, thanks for supporting this project, and I hope you like it!!!

The problem was in the Melee weapons table that had a mistake in the special rules of two of the weapons, so I corrected that table (and in the tables at the end of the book)

It would involve pages 28 and 126, where I wrote "+1 to CaC" it now has written "+1 to melee combat"

Right now I'm working on a new scenario that will be given for free to all of you that purchased the game.

There is a Facebook group where you can get information or ask any doubt you have.

I hope that you like the game as that would make all the effort worthy!

I played solo a new scenario for Fear of the Dark skirmish wargame.

It was quite tense and entertaining, and was difficult to make it alive as the characters had to fight their way towards the objective of the scenario through waves of creatures.

Hope you like the battle report!

Yes, I’m really enjoying them.

Great report, looking forward to you getting your pc fixed & being able to release it.

Thanks a lot!

The scenario is already handwritten, so, as soon as the pc is fixed I'll write it properly, select a few pictures and make the layout to make it available for free for all customers.

I'm working as well in a short campaign, but it's taking some time as it is getting longer than I expected. I hope to make it available soon, but maybe I try something new (that I have to make available for players). As you can see I don't want to make any spoiler, but I think it is going to be funny.

Once you play it, don't hesitate to post your pictures!!

A new free scenario for Fear of the Dark skirmish wargame is now available for free to all of you.

The characters are called by a friend, Jeremy Hikes, known to be an experienced "book hunter".

Very used to walk libraries and antique dealers waiting to get a book of dark arts for almost nothing and resell it for a fortune.

Jeremy has bought a really interesting book...

Interesting enough to call the characters and show it to them, as it contains very important information.

But there is a problem, someone else wants that book, and it is the kind of person you don´t want to have as an enemy...

This is the starting point for this thrilling new scenario, this is the first one but it´s not going to be the last, as I´m working in a short campaign that will also be available for free.

To get this free scenario, just visit your Wargamevault.com profile, and in the Fear of the Dark folder (created when you bought the game) you´ll see that a new file has been added, you just have to download it for free.

This scenario is the way I have to tell you:

THANKS A LOT FOR SUPPORTING THIS PROJECT.

A second free scenario has been added to Fear of the Dark skirmish wargame:

A fine rain falls behind the windscreen of the car as the characters drive through the night across a lost road.

In the distance, illuminated by the headlights of the vehicle, they can glimpse a white figure that is motionless on the shoulder.

As they approach the figure, they see her more clearly, seeing a woman dressed in white, with blood all over her hands and face, staring at the ground.

When they are only a few meters away, the woman suddenly raises her head and looks at them with empty eyes, rushing towards them in the middle of the road...

This is the intro for this thrilling scenario. I hope you enjoy it.
And as always... THANKS FOR SUPPORTING THIS PROJECT

A FAQ file has been added to the game. It's a summary of the questions and doubts that plasters have had.

If there are mire questions, the file will be updated.

Everything that I make (scenarios, FAQ... ) is uploaded to wargamevault and can be found into de Fear of the Dark folder, just go to your profile and download it for free.

Thanks for supporting this project!

As I have been a ww2 wargame player for such a long time, I'm thinking on making a ww2 / weird ww2 version of Fear of the Dark.

It would be a more combat oriented wargame, although it still would have part of the narrative style seen in Fear of the Dark.

It would be a solo wargame and would involve small skirmishes during world War 2, and the weird component would be optional, as there would be scenarios that would be strictly ww2 and other scenarios that would be weird ww2.

The game system would be similar to Fear of the Dark, although the combat system would be enhanced to become more tactic and combat-oriented.

The following battle reports are an example of what could be done with the game, I hope you like it and expect your comments:

https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/2021/05/battle-report-fear-of-dark-weird-ww2.html?m=1

https://fearofthedarkskirmishwargame.blogspot.com/2021/07/battle-report-fear-of-dark-weird-ww2.html?m=1

What do you think?

Would you be interested in a ww2 solo skirmish wargame with a weird component?

A new scenario has been added to Fear of the Dark, this is the seventh scenario of the game, and ot won´t be the last one....

"Til death do us part" is a story about love... true love...

Love can drive you crazy, and you do crazy things for love... It seems that love and madness go always together...

What would you dare to do for love?

This is the introduction for this scenario, to get it for free just log in your wargamevault profile and look in the Fear of the Dark folder, you may download and enjoy it.

I bought the game a while back but Cthulu is not really my thing (mainly as I don't have the minis or terrain).

I have, however, commandeered some of your ideas to make another system work solo for me.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Like the One who awaits in the dark, you may not see me, but I'm still here...

Real life has kept me away from gaming, mainly two kids on holidays (without going to school) that take most of my time.

What am I doing these days?

Well, I'm really busy as I'm working on different projects:

A Fear of the Dark mini campaign. A writter has disappeared while looking for information on a cult... a small fishy town with dark secrets awaits... Will the characters make It alive?
It's going to be a long scenario with a few dangerous scenes while they unveil whatever happened to the missing writter.

Terrain making and painting miniatures. New scenarios and new projects need new terrain and miniatures, so painting and making terrain takes a lot of time. Docks, a ship, scatter terrain, miniatures... There is always something new to paint or make (specially when we think on the project listed below)

A new project/ruleset based on ww2/weird ww2 skirmishes. Rules are almost done, but still need more playtesting. It will cover ww2 historical skirmishes but will also have a weird twist, always dealing with just a few miniatures and a narrative approach. That way you may play historical ww2 scenarios or go beyond and know what "really" happened during ww2.

As you can see there are a lot of things on the way, and the first one will be a post on terrain that I'm already preparing.

I'll be more active as summer is over (and kids start school) and I'll keep you informed on how everything unfolds.

We are getting close to the scariest date of the year... Halloween...

Are you preparing anything special related to wargames? Which are your plans?

I'm preparing a one-shot scenario for you and I want it to be available before Halloween.
The scenario is already written and I just have to playtest the scenes so that they are balanced.

The idea came while reading a bedtime story to my children and the plot may sound familiar:

"Officer, what we know about the case is that a young girl was going through the woods to her grandmother's house carrying a basket with a piece of cake... Next thing we know is that she was found dead as if a beast had slayed her...
It sounds familiar, isn't it, officer?
Well, to make things even more strange as It was raining she was wearing a cape with a hood...
Do you guess which colour was it?
Red... Of course...
So, officer... Are we looking for the Big bad wolf?"

The fourth free scenario has been added to the core ruleset.
Right now Fear of the Dark has 8 scenarios, and the whole ruleset and scenarios are more than 200 pages.

Halloween is quite a good opportunity to give a try to Fear of the Dark...

Many of you may have noticed that the game Fear of the Dark has disappeared in Spanish.
Both the file in Wargamevault and the free demo version.
Everything has an explanation...

Recently an agreement was reached with the Shadowlands publishing company for its professional edition in both physical and digital format in spanish.

Shadowlands is a serious and strong publishing company specialized in horror role-playing games, and anyone who has seen anyof their work can only conclude that this is the best publisher that could be responsible for launching this project in a professional way.

So for a few months Fear of the Dark will not be available in Spanish, but soon you will be able to enjoy a really professional version that will surprise you.

What will happen to those who already purchased the game through Wargamevault?

Nothing is set in stone yet, but it has been considered to give some kind of benefit to those who have already bought the game if they purchase the book once it is published by Shadowlands.

Although that benefit is yet to be decided, be sure that those who trusted in this project from the very beginning are not going to be forgotten, thanks to you this game is possible and both the publishing company and I think it's something worth rewarding.

We still have a few months to see Fear of the Dark edited in spanish in a professional way, but be sure that the wait will be worth it...

In the meantime stay close...

Stay together...

And above all, have fear of the dark...

P.S. many people has asked about an english hard back profesional edition of the ruleset, but unfortunately I'm afraid that the only publishing company that was interested wasn't a good choice (they hadn't done a RPG or wargame before and they weren't aire how to distribute It)

I Hope we see a profesional edition of the book on english made by a serious publishing company...

A new thrilling campaign is available for free for Fear of the Dark.

Jerry tugged several times on the axe handle unable to get it to release from where it was stuck, after trying in vain to pull the blade of the axe out he decided to rest his foot on the poor man´s back.

Pushing hard with his foot and pulling energetically on the axe handle, he managed to force the blade out of the back, exposing a large wound from which blood was flowing.

Looking down at the stranger's immobile body, he tilted his head to one side and crouched beside him.

Bringing his lips close to his victim's ear Jerry asked him in a low voice:

"Do you still hear the violins playing?"

Sons of the New Moon is a 53 Pages campaign that will take your investigators to their limits:

a writer is missing while he was making a research for a new book, a horror novel about a long time disappeared esoteric cult. Everything seems like he has discovered something... something wicked...

Will they discover the writer´s whereabout?

Will they make it alive?

Will they find what happened with the Sons of the New Moon?

This is the first campaign, that along with the free four extra scenarios make this game quite a big deal:

For 11$/10€ you get the full rulebook, eight scenarios and this campaign, more than 260 pages of lovecraftian horror to be played solo (or full coop)

Being an old school retired guy there is, and probably always will be, an affection for a solid book I can hold in my hands (as  my  collection of over 500 Lovecraft/Mythos titles will attest to.) Same with all my tabletop rulebooks. From all that I've read (and especially being a strictly solo player for many years now also) I've found myself sorely tempted by this game. As it looks like there's no physical copy of this on the near horizon looks like itm might be time to bite the bullet and pick up my first digita rulebook.

Thanks a lot for supporting this project!

Unfortunately I'm afraid It is not available in physical edition, but many people has printed their digital edition at local printer shops, with a quité good result.

Apart from that, right now It would be more than 260 Pages, so It would be like two Big books to print Everything.

I'm thinking on making a separate book with all the free stuff (4 scenarios and the campaign)

I recently got back into painting miniatures after a bit of a hiatus and have been looking for a fun skirmish game. I like the fact that it can be played solo and have found the mechanic quite novel--I really enjoyed Gloomhaven, though I am beginning to wonder if my girlfriend and I will ever actually finish all of the scenarios.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend an approximate quantity or type of miniatures to get started. I have some Copplestone Gun Mols that think might work (aesthetically at any rate) and some Reaper Ghouls which I think might also be on theme as there are a number of stories in the extended Lovecraft mythos which feature them. Then again, I am guessing that the scenarios likely call for specific types of enemies and antagonists. I suppose I will have to buy a copy of the rules to find out. Anyway, this looks like a really exciting project.

Then again, I am guessing that the scenarios likely call for specific types of enemies and antagonists. I suppose I will have to buy a copy of the rules to find out. Anyway, this looks like a really exciting project.

Thank you, just what I was looking for. In terms of protagonists, are their stats and description defined in each scenario or do you have the ability to create your own characters? For now, I will work with that table you provided as best that I can.

As aircav said, there is a list provided by one of the players that states what kind of miniatures you Will need.
Besides you may use whatever miniatures you have that , more or less, fit the descripción of that kind of figures.

In the ruleset It's explained how to create the characters that form your warband, and you are free to create them as you like.

There is a blog and a Facebook group for the Game (look for "Fear of the Dark skirmish wargame") if you have any doubt.

Time flies...

A year ago I published Fear of the Dark, a solo skirmish wargame based on the world of Madness created by HP Lovecraft.

It works as a call of Cthulhu RPG scenario played with miniatures and designed from the very beggining to be played solo or full coop.

Right now this wargame is quite a big deal as the price is 10€/11'50$ and you receive the full ruleset with four scenarios, four extra scenarios more and a campaign, making It a more than 260 Pages game...

8 scenarios, one campaign and the full ruleset... But It has not ended as there Will be more free scenarios for those Who bought the Game.

Right now I'm working on a second edition of the Game and Will be sent for free to everyone Who buys the Game, so if you buy It right now as the second edition is published It Will be sent for free.

If you are interested and want more information just visit the blog made for the game or the Facebook group searching for Fear of the Dark solo skirmish wargame

Hi! I just wanted to let you know how every project is going on:

1. I already started editing the layout for the second edition of Fear of the Dark, I Hope It doesn't take too long, but It's a more than 260 Pages file...

The rules Will suffer some changes and some things Will be clearly explained. The layout Will be slightly modified as well.

Apart from that, the Game Will be written without gramatical mistakes or typos.

As you know I'm not an english native speaker, but several members from this group have taken their time to help me and correct the text so that It is properly written.

The Game Will be published in two separate books: one with the rules and four scenarios and a second book with four scenarios and the campaign.

Everything Will be uploaded to wargamevault and Will be free for all those Who already had bought Fear of the Dark.

2. New scenarios for Fear of the Dark... well... I have a lot of ideas, but two of them are really appealing: one dealing with a fishy town similar to Innsmouth and another one dealing with an expedition in the sands of egypt.

I have developed all the possible "paths" in the first one and just need to write it down. I´ll be playing this one this week or the next one, as soon as I have all the terrain ready.
Remember: keep your deep ones ready...

(and as an addition this scenario would include a skirmish battle between US soldiers and hoards of monsters, as a preview of the following project ↓ )

3. The ww2 (and weird ww2) rules are working properly. After a lot of playtesting most rules have been changed once and again, but it seems that I have reached a point where they are stable and work as I want. So it just would need a lot of scenarios, and as they are quite simple to write (not as Fear of the Dark ones) I hope I can write a few and have the ruleset finished in the next few months. After that it would need a long photography session and some time of edition to make the layout.

This project is going to take more time than I expected, as I´m trying to do my best and dont want to make mistakes or leave aside important aspects of the game, but this game is something I really want to do, and I want all of you to play and enjoy it.

And this is it...

Of course I dont know how long will it take me to do each of these projects as I, the same like you, also have a real life that needs its time (job, kids, social life, everyday problems...)

I hope I have time and go step by step to finish all of them as soon as possible.

Fear of the Dark skirmish wargame is back with a second edition!

After a year and a half from being published an improved edition is available: Rules have been checked and modified, the AI controlling the enemies has been made easier to use, layout has been improved, typos have been corrected and checked...

Fear of the Dark 2nd edition is now available and it is made of two books including the whole set of rules (tokens, cards and everything needed to play), eight scenarios and a short campaign... more than 260 pages full of chances to fight nameless horrors...

Great news, and very kind of you to make it a free upgrade for existing owners :D

Now I just need to paint up the Cthulhu figures from the CMON games I bought at the start of the year ;D

I thought It was fair to make It free for all those that have been into.this Game from the very beggining.

The Cthulhu:death may die miniatures are perfect for this Game!

Don't forget to take some.pcs and post them un the Facebook group or on.this thread!!

How is It going, fellow investigators?

I'm writing this just to let you know why I have been so silent since I made Fear of the Dark second edition.

After ending the second edition I started to work in two projects at the same time:

1. A ww2 ruleset which would include a weird twist

2. An Innsmouth campaign for Fear of the Dark

I started writing the Innsmouth campaign which I wanted to be big (as that setting deserves) but I got hyped with the Ww2 ruleset.

I have played Fear of the Dark a lot last year, and when I started playtesting the Ww2 ruleset I got hyped and realised that I needed a change of setting.

A full time work and two kids that keep growing don't let me much spare time for hobby, so I have decided to work in the Ww2 ruleset and once It is finished go back to the Innsmouth campaign.

I Hope you understand this decision, It Will take some time til I'm back with Fear of the Dark but It's not going to be abandoned at all.

As I keep Painting miniatures, making terrain, searching for ideas... I'll make posts for Fear of the Dark, and I Hope you do the same and when you Paint, build or see anything related to Fear of the Dark just take a pic and post It in this group.

I'll be back soon with the Innsmouth campaign and many other ideas as soon as I end the Ww2 ruleset, one of those ideas involves a group of investigators following the trail of a German expedition dissappeared in the sands of egypt while looking for an ancient artifact...

About the Ww2 ruleset, it is working better than I thought allowing for solo/coop/PvP skirmishes keeping them fast and easy to play even when you use more than 30 miniatures per side.

The rules are quite easy but allow for a wide range of tactical decisions.

The rules are almost finished (infantry, vehicles, stealth missions...) including the player VS player and Solo modes, and now I'm making scenarios for a campaign but to make them is a joke compared to a single Fear of the Dark scenario.

This is a review I have written (full of pictures, of course) on Rubicon Models City Walls Set to use them when playing @
I think it´s a great and highly detailed set and not expensive at all.

First, thank you for the review of the Rubicon wall set. I love Rubicon vehicle models, but have not yet gotten any of their terrain.

Second, a weird WW2 skirmish game? COUNT ME IN! Please keep us updated on your progress. It will give me something to do with all of my Bolt Action minis since I don't get to play much.
