Title: Tap's VSF World Update 06.10.2021
Post by: Spinal Tap on March 06, 2021, 03:42:35 PM
Have felt the need to get involved in some VSF style gaming for a while and finally I have given in to the idea.

Problem is - no terrain and no minis excluding some Empire of the Dead monks I've had for a while and did an ok paint job on.

I have now started building some Dave Graffam buildings and have ordered some Empire of the Dead Gentlemen.

I toyed with the idea of stripping my monks and repainting but, in the end, I decided to just touch them up and add a few highlights.

Thank you fellas, you're so kind.

I must say they are very easy to paint.

Once my Westwind order arrives I'll start the Gentlemen and post on here.

They look great.

Can I ask how these scale next to Copplestone figures (my go to scale/build standard).

I have some old Westwind Vampire minis and they are true 25mm or close - too small for me to use comfortably.  The detail is soft too.  These seem to be much better by the look of them.

If they're a suitable size I could be tempted to use them as Cultists across various genres.

Afraid I have no Copplestone figures to compare to, most of my collection to date has been plastics and mainly fantasy stuff.

These are better detailed than the small number of Vampire minis I've seen.

Here's a pic of the tallest with a ruler but he is in a wide stance.

Edit: Just noticed I've messed up that picture as there's a fair bit of unmarked ruler before the measure starts - what an idiot.

For humans comparisons I have some Hasslefree fantasy minis, Frostgrave barbarians and old Stars Wars prepaints that I could put together in few comparison pics if you have any knowledge about those ranges.

Sorry I can't be of more help but perhaps there are others on here with more knowledge.

They look to be 25mm to the eyes or am I mis-reading the ruler?

So actually about 27-28mm to the eye, although he is the tallest of the group.

Here's a couple of mechanical dogs from Wild West Exodus, should fit right into my vision of a VSF/Gothic Horror world.

Named Kona and Kula.

The westwind figures I have, from EOTD and Vampire Wards scale well and sit well with Copplestone figures.

First time painting eyes (actually eye - I intentionally picked this figure as he has an eyepatch) and stripes.

I have absolutely no idea what the gun is.

Being British I have rarely seen a gun so they fall into very broad categories as regards identification: pistol, machine gun, shotgun, rifle - that's about it 😁.

Fair enough, the Le Mat is interesting because it is a revolver with an additional shotgun barrel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeMat_Revolver

It is a bit of an obscure weapon so I am always curious if I see one sculpted on a figure.

Like that a lot, must see how I can stat the mini to have that capability - maybe silver buckshot for Werewolves and Vampires.

The first setting I'm working on is the Victorian streets of Jorvik (York) and I'm primarily using Dave Graffam papercraft either on card or foamcore, although the tower is a TT Combat Industrial Hive building with cardstock wall.

I'm contemplating a magnetic sheet in the bottom of buildings with removable roofs for miniature storage.

And finally, for now- The ‘O’ Department

The ‘O’ department deals with all matters related to the Occult, be it Vampires, Witches, Werewolves or Ghosts.

It is led by the eminent Vampirologist, Professor Bernard Ampleforth; a founding member of the department, Professor Ampleforth is one of the Worlds eminent authorities on Vampires and, despite his age, is a skilled Vampire hunter.

Started looking for vehicles for around the city, spotted these on ebay for £7 each (apparently they used to go for a quid in Poundland).

Bought a couple and thinking of building some Automaton drivers, and using them as Hansom Cabs as that fits the York connection, Joseph Hansom being from the city.

They are from the Golden Compass by Corgi.

Made my first foamcore building yesterday covered in Dave Graffam paper; still made the roof from card as I prefer the thinner look.

Plan is to use the inside of the buildings for storage of scatter terrain and miniatures - with magnetic sheets for the latter.

Was up early this morning so painted the third member of the 'O' Department - Jesse Moonwalker (Reaper minis) before the rest of the family stirred.

Jesse is a Werewolf from Indiana, USA. He had been turned at a young age and consequently shunned by his family and community, eventually being sold to a circus ran by a cadre of Vampires to become a major attraction at full moon fighting all manner of beasts.

The circus obtained a rare herb, Banefold, which allowed them to force Jesse to remain in werewolf form forever and fight every night; eventually resulting in the loss of an arm in a particularly violent confrontation with a Werebear.

On one summers evening in 1890 Professor Ampleforth and American colleagues waited for the show to end then destroyed the Vampire circus folk. Most of the acts were taken away but Jesse was so violent that the team wanted to destroy him out of hand.

Ampleforth would not hear it and marched into Jesse’s cage, started to give first aid and speak with the wolf-man.

This simple act of kindness created an unbreakable bond between the two, Jesse travelled with the Professor to Jorvik and was provided with a Tesla powered mechanical arm.

He now joins the Professor on all his excursions and is a common, if frightening, sight to the residents of Jorvik.

Dr James Wilson qualified as a medical practitioner at St Andrew’s University almost 20 years ago and spent his early years of practice tending the ills of Edinburgh’s elites.

One day he simply did not turn up at his surgery, the next it was for sale and the following week Dr Wilson was tending to the poor in the docks of Leith; sometimes for a pittance but often for free.

His works with the poor attracted significant accolade but very little in the way of finance. Consequently the good doctor was nearly as poor as his patients.

He saw his first Vampire a few years after moving to the docks, an old female who had travelled from Latvia on an old steamer.

He had been called to tend to multiple wounds to sailors and, on arrival, found not only wounded but 4 dead sailors. As he practiced his calling, for so he considered it, the Vampire attacked.

Fortunately an old sword, souvenir of travels to foreign climbs for one sailor, was at hand and James felled it with one blow, severing the creatures head from it’s body.

As the threat from Vampires grew so did the need for brave men to work alongside Vampire hunters, providing healing during the heat of battle. James was subsequently recruited to JANUS and eventually found himself joining Ampleforth.

He still carries the bent old sword with him along with a service pistol that has seen better days. Besides these he owns one suit, one waistcoat, one cloak, one hat and one pair of shoes, all have seen better days.

Anything more he considers frivolity and all he earns goes to support his, and others, good works.

Up at 5.30 this morning as usual, everyone else is off work today so are having a lay in while I paint the last member of my small team of Vampire Hunters. This group are now complete for for Fistful of Lead Tales of Horror but I'll be adding a few more figures for In Her Majesty's Name.

The final member of this group is the eccentric millionaire landowner, Tobias McGrath, who has a passion for hunting; Vampires being his latest obsession.

His presence within this team is as a result of his abilities with a rifle and the large donations he makes to JANUS annually.

A bonus for the team is that he is not at all arrogant and is, in fact, a thoroughly likable chap.

Jesse has gruffly warned Tobias to not even think about moving onto Werewolves. This warning is delivered with a smile, but there is some steel behind the joviality.

Thank you for your kind words, it's much appreciated.

Today I've been making a couple more Dave Graffam buildings, printed onto standard paper then glued to card and foamcore, base strengthened with superglue and sand.

My hope is that I can have a whole 3' x 4' town board fitting into one box, all the buildings will have the roofs as lids so minis and scatter are all stored inside.

Just have the bases to paint and some tufts to add on these once the tufts arrive.

I really like these papercraft pieces and they are so quick to put together; in just over 2 hours I've got 2 more terrain pieces.

Another steam vehicle, Philadelphia Amphibious Dredge, part of the Brumm Old Fire range.

The whole range seems to be on Ebay UK and many are quite expensive but got this one for £8 as it wasn't boxed.

The paddle was bight yellow so it's had a quick coating of black.

I've had these mdf barrel things for ages, not sure where they're from, got them from a mate.

Painted the barrels as wood with brass and iron ends, did the frames as all metals and made 2 small bases to match the buildings I've done - can be used in different configurations.

Am now planning to build a large piece to represent a Skytram (aeronef) Station.

And awaiting my Highgate Vampires to start my dark warband.

Painted the first of my Vampires today and have really struggled, especially with the face.

I'm going to paint the others then consider if I strip and repaint this one.

Thanks all.

I thought about why my edge highlights and detail were poor and think I've got it down. My son was sat in my usual painting spot and I sat at the other side of the table. Consequently the miniature was in my own shadow and, despite the table lamp I have, the brightness and colour were different.

Hence, once I took him to the window, I could see loads of problems with the edge highlighting and details.

I've tidied him up a bit, varnished in matt except the coat which is satin, and I think he'll do.

I'm partway through writing the backstories for my Vampires but this chap is one of three suitors vying for the attentions of their Matriarch, Adrasteia.

Will be working mainly on this project for the next month so there should be some more content soon.

A very busy hobby day today, all centred around this VSF project.

I was fortunate to pick up another excellent Brumm model for £10 on Ebay as the box is slightly damaged, and it arrived this morning.

I really like that these steam contraptions actually worked day to day; the card with this one states that it did the London to Bath route carrying up to 18 people.

Even better, it's creator was called Goldsworthy Gurney.

What an awesome name.

I've also got lots of work done on my Airtram Station, based and primed a couple of letter boxes and got another three miniatures pretty much complete - will post them once finished.

The Winterthorns

One of the oldest Noble Vampire families in England the Winterthorns are generally well regarded, obtain their blood commercially, and have had the ear of world leaders for centuries.

They are involved in a multitude of good works for the betterment of all species, and influence Vampire/Human interaction across the globe from their position on the Noble Vampire Council.

The Council stance on inter-species relations is opposed by the Holy Vampiric Order, led by Sophia Jagiellon, previous Queen of Prussia, thought to have died in 1512, but actually retired from public view as her Vampiric features became more difficult to conceal.

The Order considers all other species to be subservient and categorised as prey or pets, although they will offer a subservient vampire status to more useful individuals on occasion; these ‘turned’ are fiercely loyal and often more cruel than Nobles.

In recent years, Adrasteia Winterthorn, the youngest daughter, but also the most talented and ruthless, rebelled against her parents and left the family estate, taking her 3 siblings, Feliceia, Graven and Redford with her.

They travelled to the Holy Vampiric Order’s seat of power in Prussia to pledge their allegiance to Sophia and now do her bidding around the globe with a view to total world domination.

The Winterthorn dynasty was severely diminished by theses defections and their power has waned accordingly. However, it is rumoured that Constance, the illegitimate daughter of the Lady Winterthorn, has recently been made the sole beneficiary of the Winterthorn estates and her half-siblings disavowed.

Ended up not working Thursday.

Instead I got the pleasure of getting my broken down vehicle to a local garage where I could pay the owner an amount similar to the debt of some third world nations to get it back on the road again.

I also got the afternoon to paint a few figures so.........

The Winterthorns are, at the insistence of Sophia Jagiellon,  working with one of her most trusted lieutenants, Luvick Siervage.

Luvick is feared across Europe, especially by Werewolves who he hunts mercilessly, and is intent on bringing his own brand of terror to the British Isles.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51257733235_1b5e9b94be_w.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m6thii)P6190003 (https://flic.kr/p/2m6thii) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Luvick is aided in most matters by his manservant Mattias Kharkov; Matthias has served the Siervage family for over 400 years and was horribly disfigured saving Luvick from volley shot from a stake gun.

Unfortunately Matthias was in bat form when he threw himself into the line of fire and became horribly crippled as he attempted to revert to his human appearance with the stake embedded in his flesh.

Consequently he is known to most as Matthias the Twisted although it’s unclear if that is in respect of his body or his mind.

The newest member of Professor Ampleforth’s Vampire Eradication Group is Jim Sugden, a farmer’s son from Harrogate, who has been working as a gardener at the Academy for just less than 2 years.

A few weeks previous Jim, while sharpening a scythe, heard the screams of a group of young ladies; gallantly he rushed to their aid, finding them accosted by a pair of ‘Turned’ Vampires.

With little hesitation he engaged the fiends and severed their heads with the scythe.

Suitably impressed by his bravery, Ampleforth offered him a role in the team which Jim gratefully accepted.

As as result of the manner of his first kills, and a little to do with his gruff demeanor, he has become known as The Jim Reaper; he is not particularly happy with this nickname, much to the amusement of the rest of the company.

Put together a Dave Graffam chapel today with a foamcore frame and cardboard roof; roof lifts off for storage as usual.

Chapel bought from Wargamesvault for less than a quid.

Time to concentrate on some more buildings and scatter terrain for this project now whilst miniature painting moves to 40K figures.

Very nice! I have some of those Ironclad minions but mine are in more boring black overcoats. I'll be using then as the cannon fodder for the Gentleman's Anarchistic Inventor's Club (conditions of menbership include the possession of a top hat!).

Confession time.

Only noticed I'd painted too of them green after they were done.

Considered stripping one and repainted but just called him Mr Lime instead.

Been out of sorts with hobbying for a while due to other pressures so it's been good to return this week.

Made some planters from old volume pots from a dead Marshall amp and a fenced yard from a broken clipboard and some mdf fencing I had lying around.

Added some of my more generic scatter terrain pieces as a storage yard and some graves I made ages ago for a graveyard next to the church; I intend to make another papercraft hut without the green base (that one is from my shanty town stuff).
