Title: Nick in the grim dark future - mixed 40k / 29.12.2022 Space Hulk finished
Post by: Warboss Nick on March 16, 2021, 09:30:42 PM
I haven’t played 40k in years, but I still have several 40k armies with lots of unpainted miniatures. I still love the models and might even try out the new edition. To reduce the lead mountain I gave away some models and got going on painting the rest.

Sounds good in theory, but then I dug out the old Black Reach box from down below and started painting the Marines for my son. He chose the colours and did some of the contrast painting with a little help, I cleaned up and filled in the details. Only problem? We just put together some easy to build primaris...

Very nice. I like the colour scheme.

Maybe you could use these guys for a generic sci-fi skirmish game (and set it in the 40k universe) and use the primaris for actual 40k so you're not mixing and matching scales?

I really like that colour scheme!

Good luck on embarking on 40k with your Son, that sounds a lot of fun. The new edition is pretty fun for what it is (especially if you ignore the meta chasing tournament scene and just play how you want to) and stuff like the Crusade campaign system is again a good way of playing with friends/family.

Thanks guys! The colours were chosen by the little one with a little help where to put which colours, not to take too many and stick to one scheme.

We’ll probably start with either a simple system or a simplified 40k. First “games” used Star Wars legion dice.

Now for something from my pile of shame, two Kroot shaper. The regular Kroot is an old model to show the old colour scheme.

Nice work, especially on that red kroot, it looks great.

If it helps we often use 3rd edition for our 40K games because of how much simpler it is that more recent editions.  It pretty much has everything you would want in it but just doesn't have the weight of the special rules.

Good Work!
Another rules suggestion - "2085: Warlords of the Wasteland" is a great, easy plan system with few rules that may be kid friendly:

Thanks guys, that’s great motivation for me, especially since the red Kroot shaper has his kindred of 18 Kroot and 3 krootoxen waiting in line.

Should have thought of 3rd ed myself, as it was my start into 40k  :D

Yeah Pictors as much as I love RT, I probably played many, many more games with 3rd ed than I ever did with any of the other versions. It would be my version of choice for 40K games, because of the simplicity.

One page rules Grimdark future is a nice stopped back and streamlined 40k type game.

Thanks Sir Theo, that’s another choice I’m looking at.

These Ork kommandoz were converted many years ago when the (then new and metal) kommandoz came out. They sat in a box way too long and were finally painted.

More space marines. As the young one insisted he also wanted a blue one I painted the librarian for space hulk. I recently got lucky to get a boxed set only partially built (including the modifications to the librarian) and he enjoys the game immensely at not yet six years old. So expect more on that front in the future.

More Red Orktober. An old buggy with new crew, rokketz and bitz. The camp is a rusty orange with several different blues, as far as can be seen under all that dust.

More marines for the young one and space hulk. Still pondering if I should try to squeeze the usual wolf decals on the rather loaded shoulder pads of these minis.

Love the colour scheme: nice and brightly heraldic. Or to use a 4th ed. phrase from the build your own chapter rules: 'Take pride in your colours' 8)

And that green shaper is the limited edition model, isn't it?

One page rules Grimdark future is a nice stopped back and streamlined 40k type game.

I second that. We recently played two games of Grimdark Future Firefight (the skirmish version) in one evening, with time to spare. The rules are nice and simple, but do have enough depth to make each force feel different.

First time playing a 40K(ish) game in almost a decade, and it was a blast! I too probably have mostly 3rd ed games under the belt, with quite a bit of 4th thrown in and some 5th as well. But to me too, 3rd remains as the most fun of the editions. And Grimdark Future feels like 3rd a lot :)

Thanks guys! The colour choice on the marines was made by my son with a little help from me. He recently demanded more red, so I try to add a bit here and there.

The green Kroot shaper is indeed the limited edition. Love that one.

Another four terminators, this time with thunder hammers. The shields gave me the opportunity to add some red accents, and I used more gold rather than just dark silver. Plus a group shot with the first three of this batch.

Finally finished the Genestealers for Space Hulk. Not my best piece of work, but it will do. I had a real hard time painting pink. It only seemed to work when I started mixing the colour myself instead of using a triad.

More marines. Finally finished the remaining miniatures for space hulk plus some extra primaris for good measure. If I‘m lucky I might get in a game of space hulk with the boys next week.

They look very good to me, and what’s most important: you can play the game fully painted!
That’s actually my biggest issue with the modern versions, the models, while stunning and dynamic, take really, really long to finish.
