Title: Gladiatorial combat
Post by: Poiter50 on September 04, 2009, 06:14:31 AM
A group of us in the club are enamoured of Gladiatorial skirmishing. We use 28mm figures on a Hotz Arena, mostly Foundry but mixed in with some Crusader & OG IIRC as well as others that I am unsure of the make. We want to start up an occassional campaign with Gladiatorial schools under the control of a Lanista using points (sesterces, denarii). Do people think the LOTHS/LOTOW purchasing systems appropriate or can they suggest other methods of running a "school"?

Try the rules on the specialist-games-site from Games-Workshop. Some friends use it for Gladiators with their circus on our con. Everybody liked it...

Umm, do you have a link? Not familiar with the GW site.

I'd suggest Rudis (Tabletop Games- http://www.tabletopgames.com/ (http://www.tabletopgames.com/)) as a system to use.
It has all the info you require. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/7790 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/7790) has a quick review.

Paragon's Gladiator Combat was always a decent set (back in the 70s, played in a biscuit tin with magnets fixed under the figure bases so that you could play on the school bus) but don't know who sells them now.

After trying a few different rules I finally settled on "HABET, HOC HABET!" by Flagship Games. It's easy for gladiator rules to be very boring, what with them being often just two fellas fighting.

I think this game has just enough complexity and options to keep it interesting without grinding to a halt under a mass of rules. Suits my level of brain-power. Includes a campaign system where each player has his own school, can buy and sell slaves, train them up to become gladiators and they gain experience over time (and can also suffer long-term injuries that have a lasting effect on their performance). Different sizes of games are put on, and there are several types of event that can be featured in each one (one-on-one, mass combat, team combats, etc. some to the death, some not) and you can bet on the bouts to try and make even more money. Includes rules for beast-hunts with stats for various animals, and also has chariot racing rules, and an extra for fantasy gladiator battles.

It's the best one I've tried.

Our "Morituri Te Salutant" rules have campaign and Galdiator school rules in them - available as a PDF download ...

Have you checked Red Sand Blue Sky (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10693) or Familia Gladiatoria (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/43382)? Both have rules for what you want, and I've played an enjoyed both.

I'll second Plynkes nomination of HHH. It does exactly what you want.

Found it as PDF at: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1340002_Pit_Fighter.pdf
And the Arena at: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1340003_Pit_Fighter_Boards.pdf

Maybe it will help.

Just wanted to say thank you to all those who replied. Several of the suggested rule sets have Gladiator School creation methods, so we will look at them to see whether they work for us.  :)

I actually enjoy to play with gladiators. I have tried some rules like "Munera sine Misione" and I hope to try Arena Games soon.
You may have some data on rules available there : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/29520/item/610616 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/29520/item/610616)

I have found a huge amount of rules but it seems that there is only a few available reviews.

Munera suits what we are doing as a club group, we all have 5 or 6 Gladiators (about 6 of us) each and the main reason for looking for another rule set is to see how people put together schools/campaigns to be played over a number of nights.
