King Charles VIII of France and entourage, take holy communion before invading the Italy peninsula with a French Army of twenty-five thousand men (including 8,000 Swiss mercenaries). For several months, French forces moved through the Italian states virtually unopposed.

Yeah, me too. First heard of them on Ken's Yarkshire Gamer Vlog. With a few minor tweaks they ought to play very well and have a high degree of (ugh, here's that word again), "period" feel.

The town hall seems to mix seamlessly into the Grand Manner spread. I'll pop that chap another email again and see if he has the time as of now to print one out :)

The most fearsome of the Italian Wars mercenary leaders and commander of the Great Company, the German Knight, Werner von Urslingen, whose motto was ‘Enemy of God, of Pity and of Mercy'. Lovely bloke really, just misunderstood. Between stints fighting both for and against Venice, Verona, Milan, the Papal States, Pisa, Siena, Florence and the Kingdom of Naples, his company devastated central and southern Italy, raising money by threatening to burn houses and harvests and putting prisoners to torture.

Italian Wars - Bartolomeo d'Alviano was an Italian Condottiero and Captain who distinguished himself in the defence of the Venetian Republic against the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian. Born in 1455, into the noble family of Umbria at Todi, the son of Francesco d'Alviano and Isabella degli Atti. Bartolomeo fought very early in his life in Central Italy, serving in the Papal States, and in 1496, against Pope Alexander VI and the Colonna.

Definitely Furioso, it ticks all the boxes for me.
Swiss pike are 72 figs per block, but most of the others are 56 figs.

Excellent. Large pike blocks are a great way of doing it. They just look "right". Smaller blocks lack that key component.

I am now thinking of going bigger for the Spanish Tercio

I am now thinking of going bigger for the Spanish Tercio
They're a difficult body of troops to pin down in the right formation really. The temptation is to have a whole rank of Sword and Buckler to the fore backed up in turn by the Arquebus then Pike. I'm not sure (is anyone?) how they actually formed this early on but however they did, it was very effective.

I'm not sure (is anyone?) how they actually formed this early on but however they did, it was very effective.
As I understand it, if you are talking about the early Italian Wars then the Spanish used the Colunella, a fore runner of the Tercio, a mix of Pike, Arquebus and Swordsmen. Initially the bulk of spanish troops were sword and buckler men which were effective in the Reconquista but they found that these could not stand against the French/Swiss pike so they raised the ratio of pike and arquebus and reduced considerably the number of sword and buckler men.
Whilst no-one knows the exact ratio the rough numbers were 4:4:1 - Pike, Arquebus, Sword forned in a single unit of around 1000 to 1200 men. They usually 'brigaded' 3 or 4 Colunellas together which (much) later turned into the Tercio system.
An effective way of portraying this on the table is to have a unit of 12-16 Arquebus in two ranks backed up by another 2-4 ranks of pike (12-16) with a single rank of swordsmen (8) at the rear or perhaps on the side of the colunella in two blocks of 4. The unit then fights as a combined shot and melee unit, gaining the advantage of the mix of weapons but with lesser effectiveness in hand to hand combat with the Swiss pike blocks. Which is why the Spanish almost always fought defensive battles with their infantry behind some form of obstacle or barricade.
Olicanalad has posted a number of ideas about the colunellas. A link to his blog is here:
http://olicanalad.blogspot.com/2016/10/a-second-italian-wars-battle-using-pike.html
Here's a poor picture of how I utilise portray the colunella for Pike and Shot.

Thanks Hu Rhu. A very sexy looking unit.
I'm familiar with James Roach's excellent blog.
The only thing I would add to what you have presented is that due to a more comparatively heavy emphasis, early on in the First War, by the Spanish on the arquebus in comparison to that of the Italian, French etc I would be tempted to put more arquebus carrying models on the bases to represent the relative prevalence of that troop type compared to other nations.
Cerignola 1502 CE is a very interesting battle in this regard. I'm actually contemplating switching my game from Fornovo to Cerignola as it is certainly a more interesting battle. The problem as usual, is the lack of heraldic info in English. I was a little disappointed to see that Massimo Predonzani, Vincenzo Alberici, Rachele Tiso latest offering didn't cover the battle.

I quite agree and plan to double the number of arquebus figures in each colunella.

The crossbowmen are a mix of Front Rank and Athena Miniatures
Would you say they are the same scale as Front Rank, or smaller? I got some of the Athena billmen and archers, and found there was a bit or a range of different sizes, some scale well with Perry, whereas others look bigger and more suited to go alongside Front Rank.
I'm quite fussy with this sort of thing, and would like to get some more of the Athena range but don't want to find they are too big.

Yep, that's the way to do it. There are some manufacturers that you might never think would go together. I've got all sorts of stuff in my Anglo Danish units that at first glance I would not have thought of putting together, when painted though, they just meld together- (link below if you're interested):

what a brilliant approach ... so effective - you can tell they've been hand-painted originally, and works with painted figures so well.

Beautiful command stands.
-
Lovely figures & flags.
Italian Wars was the first club campaign I ever got involved in.
Seeing this does give me a hankering to revisit it.
Being realistic it would have to be at skirmish level, but
there are a lot of nice figures out there now. I still remember
having to carve pistols off all of the Essex Spanish Cavalry,
cuz we wuz doing 'Early' & Dey didn't 'ave dem den. ;D
-
Great looking figures. Always a colourfull period on the table

The Italian War wargamer is certainly spoilt for choice in the current market.

Lovely figures, Gareth. :-*
Must be a very colorful sight on the table.

Pete,
I've still got the campaign map and the event cards for the campaign! Just can't quite get round to chucking them away.

A great project on the whole of course, but those Gendarmes really are something. :D What a great period.

The Spanish Warhost musters for battle near Naples in the region of Campania, Italy. For God, King and for Spain 🇪🇸. In the near future, there is a group of us who intend fighting a battle around the costal area of Naples, it’s going to be fun.

This project has been a very slow burn for me and I’ve hated every minute of it, but seeing one of the contingents displayed on the table like this, has made it worth while I think 🤔

Your Spanish are stunning, they are next on my list in 18mm Blue Moon minis now that the Swiss are done. I'll use your minis as inspiration! Thank you lol

Spanish Colunela. The second pike, shot and sword unit of the day. These lads are from Wargames Foundry, repurposed as Spanish, which I think works just fine.

Guys, I'm looking for some reading on this period to fire me up for Never Mind The Ruckus (skirmish version of NMTB). My interest is in the Italian forces mostly and I'm not averse to fictional stuff that is based around the historical events. Any suggestions for either histories of the real thing or fiction woven around that?
