Title: How far to Moscow?

Having recently picked up a copy of the new 'O Group' rules, my gaming pal and I decided to embark on an Eastern Front campaign in 10mm.  The new rules look excellent, with a big emphasis on command and control but with enough action, counter action to make the game really repeatable.

However 10mm is a completely new departure for me, normally I stick to 28mm.  I had only gamed at this scale using Wings of War WW1, which doesn't need any terrain whatsoever.

So the first thing was to see what I had that might be turned into 10mm terrain.

I had a few odds and ends so produced a couple of fields and some light woods, using some Woodlands Scenics clump foliage and some of the very small trees I have in my bits box.  So far so good.

However if I wanted anything else I would have to scratchbuild.  I decided to model a small thatched cottage.

Built out of balsa wood, scored to make planks, with an offcut of foam for the chimney and some string for the cottage garden, I had my start. Now to add a few bits to fill out the base but leave enough space for the farmyard to be occupied by troops.

Interesting  :)
Good start Gary.
I’ve been looking at the new 12mm range from Victrix. It is very tempting...

Good start. 10mm is a great scale, lets you get a good sized battle on the table. I too am looking O Group, but haven’t had chance to play a game yet.

There are some good looking East Front buildings on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10mm-Scale-Wargame-Scenery-Russian-Village-Buildings-10-items-/114331212752?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

Pendraken too have some east front buildings.

I’ve just painted up a company’s worth of the Victrix Germans - and they are nice figures to paint. I’m not sure why they are labelled 12mm, as they are very much the height of Pendraken, Pithead or Minifigs figures. But the Victrix ones are certainly more slender than the metals.

The Victrix PzIV scales very closely to the Pithead PzIV

Which is all good news as they can be mixed in with existing metal ranges

Thanks for the kind comments everyone.

Thanks. Its 50mm x 30mm.  Very small for my old eyes.  :?

Interesting  :)

I also looked at the Victrix range but the requirement to buy 6 vehicles at a time and with a limited range at the moment, meant I opted for Pendraken.  I might however be tempted by their Panthers.

I have some of the Pendraken, Battlescene and Timescale buildings on order along with Pendraken miniatures and vehicles but I thought I'd get started with something of my own.  I also looked at some N Guage railway models which seem to fit perfectly, albeit more 1950's England than 1940's Russia.  ??? ???  However I am sure a few can be customised to suit.  8)

Since last night I have added a thatched roof and some fences to the plot.  The thatch is cut from an old face flannel since teddy bear fur and towelling are way out of scale.

I also added a hedge made of pipecleaners and what is meant to be a hayrick made of foam base with flannel offcuts.

Your painting is excellent. I love your 28mm CoC thread.  Very inspirational.

So after the glue had dried I slapped some basecoat onto the model.

And then some highlighted shades

Still needs a little more depth but that will follow in due course.

So finally finished off my first 10mm terrain piece.

I noticed that the white glue had not dried completely when I took these photos.

Also arrived in the post today some markers I ordered from Warbases from their custom acrylic range. Poor light in the photo but the yellow markers say Hesitant. I could have gone with the MDF markers from Two Fat Lardies but I wanted to be able to differentiate the effects easily on the tabletop.

So I've got the rules, made some terrain, what else do I need.  Oh yes the miniatures.  Sadly my order form Pendraken was sent in just as they are in they are in the process of moving premises and I might have to wait a week or two for casting etc.  So in the meantime back to some terrain building.

Thanks. True about an opponent but until lockdown ends it will be solo play.  :?

That terrain piece came out nicely!

Thank you. I'll need a few more peices to fill the table though.  ??? ???

Absolutely!  I didn’t think you’d stop there! Lol

So I didn't.  Next up is a farm compex using N Guage plastic railway models.  Here they are in basic form.

I added some bits of stuff to break up the rather stark outline.

And then with a little paint.

I think I will add a litle more hay to the piles and perhaps the odd flower or tuft to break up the sameness but otherwise I am happy.

Sadly too many of the N Guage buildings are wrong for the period but I do have my eyes on a small factory complex.  Otherwise I will stick to more Eastern Front resin models which are on order.

Not bad at all, Gary. They look the part.

Thanks Richard.

I have been busy over the last week or so and not had the time to post.  However I have managed to finish off a few more buildings and some other scenery.

This gives me a reasonable set of terrain to play over.  The roads are by Fat Frank and the telegraph poles are N Guage Railway accessories.  The teddybear fur mat is ok but I need to do a little shaving and some colouring to give me a more Eastern Front look and also to keep it to scale a little more. Then the road sections will be able to lay flat.

The figures and armour from Pendraken and Victrix have arrived so I shall tackle them next.

These are really sweet!

Thanks guys

With the miniatures having arrived I started out on the armour as I was quite taken aback as to how small the miniatures were.

First up is some Victrix Late War German Armour plastic.   L-R Panther, PzIV and Stug.  And I realised that I had forgotten to order some transfers so they remain to be finished off.

Then some Pendraken metal AFVs - Pz III and Pz IV alongside a Victrix Stug this time based.

Given this is the first time I had painted anything of this scale I was reasonably pleased with the finished product.

Then with these under my belt, I turned my attention to the figures themselves.  God they are small - tiny even and my tried and trusted painting method did not suit them at all.  Here's my first stab.

First up is the Bn HQ, with a planning desk and a Kubelwagen.  I realised that I was missing a dice holder, hence the base is unfinished.

Then the Fowrad Observation Officers party with Radio Op and Kubelwagen.

The good news about the painting is that it takes no time at all.  In fact waiting for the paint to dry is the longest period.  I do however intend to experiment a little with the painting at this scale and see if I can't improve a little.

Next up are the companies themselves plus the support weapons.  More to come later this week.

So how do these compare to your normal size?
I found painting 15mm small enough

Too bloody small.  The tanks were fine but the figures are way too small for my eyes, especially guiven that I hadn't painted anything below 28mm before.

Got stuck into the infantry.  First company are finished.  Bases are 30mm x 20mm with three figures representing a Section (three Sections to a Platoon). The Coy HQ is on a round 30mm base.

Also finished off the Bn HQ base by adding a couple of dice holders.  One will represent the Bn Orders which influence who has the initiative.  The other (not shown) will represent how long the enemy artillery barrage lasts which interferes with deployment.

And finally some fire support. From L to R 75mm Inf Gun, two 37mm PAK 36 and a 50mm Pak 38.  Bases are 30mm x 40mm.
