Place holder just need to read my rules to see if my idea counts as difficult terrain
-
Just checked my Chain of command rules and for heavy going it includes rubble so I am thinking a ruined town made of three bases of wrecked buildings does that sounds enough to meet the criteria for the competition?
The rubble will effect movement
-
Cut out some bases for mine

Cheat!
lol
-
Cheat why?
-
The official start date is 01:00 GMT Saturday 10th April 2021 :'( :'(
oops :D :D
I have got to steal any time I can get, new Job is ramping up
-
It is not cheating. You are allowed to start. I will just not start tallying the participants before I fire the gun, so to speak.
-
Cheat? Early Start? Who cares about that?
Socks/flops/Sandles! :o
Good thing your old enough to get away with that!
Look forward to seeing what comes out of this as much as all the other entries and past BSCs
Crack on!
-
Good luck bud!

Cheeky git
I am in my own garden I am allowed to wear what I want
And I am old enough to do what I want
But also you wouldn't see me dead wearing sandles or socks with flipflops any where else
-
Just because its cold out.. ::)
The important part is what your doing, not yer feet, so all's good
-
Looking forward to this Colin. You need some more terrain to protect your British troops! ;) lol

I am new to this BSC thing, is there a dress code?
-
Yes there is a dresscode. :)

-
I have got all that on but your picture doesn't show footwear so I just guessed
-
Safety flip flops obviously.
Sounds like a good idea for your BSC entry. Will this be for your 20mm stuff?
-
Yes Steve for my Chain of command 1940 1/72 scale stuff
Went for the big stuff this year after 15 mm last time
-
Yes there is a dresscode. :)

Well I’m out lol Just kidding.
It’s all cords and flat caps for me :)
Looks good Colin 8)
-
I always look forward to one of your builds, and I like the modular bases...was thinking of just making one piece (mainly to give me a chance of finishing it) but now I’m going to think again :D
-
Finished yet? ;)
-
Just spent the morning digging out my Linka set.
Found loads of other stuff :D
-
Safety flip flops obviously.
lol

My brother says I need to add to my thread
Not very much to show

I am breaking more than getting full casts

It always fascinating to see how everyone is tackling the BSC, so many different approaches 8)
-
Good start Colin! 8) Those plaster moulds will give you some good rubble!

Progress is slow but still going

My rubble pile gets bigger
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/51/1912-220421090107-511511840.jpeg)
I am thinking one of the ruins is going to be a stone church or church hall as half of my molds are for stonework
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/51/1912-220421090243-511521417.jpeg)
I am also experiminting with some entrenchments in the rubble, my 7 man section for CoC takes up a lot of room!
Once I get the main structures up I will need to add wooden floors and extra doors and windows scattered about and maybe some furniture. and then some green stuff work
-
Love the attention you’ve paid to the windows...it’s amazing though how much rubble you need.
Taking notes as I think I’ll need something similar at some point
:)

Awesome! I used to have a huge Linka set when I was a kid too; the box must have been about 100cm wide, 20cm high and 30cm deep, and was filled to the brim with moulds, plans and bags of plaster.
I got it for my birthday (if I recall that correctly), as I was very ambitious in my plans for a model railway at the time.
Regretfully though, space was at an absolute premium back at my parents' house, so that awesome layout was never realized, and that huge Linka box sat under my bed for many, many years. I did some casting of pieces, but being impatient as I was back then, it took too long, and I needed too many casts to make even a small building, and I got bored with it.
Eventually I got rid of it, but I don't remember how. Probably sold it at a flea market or something like that.
And seeing something very akin to it being used now curses my past self for selling it off!
It's the perfect tool for creating large built up areas for sure. Are you using the original plaster, or something a bit more sturdy? because I found that the original plaster was just very weak.
I'm contemplating making plaster moulds for some of the components for my build too btw, (using dental plaster) but I am planning on using pigments and inks to pre-colour the plaster. That way, I can break pieces off, and it won't show any glaring white areas all of a sudden. maybe worth a try?
Your entry will obviously be looking excellent with all that rubble, and so far, it's the best iteration of difficult terrain in the competition I've seen...
+++EDIT+++ Found a picture of that box...
-
Thank you
I remember as a kid my friends dad building a model rail layout using this stuff it looked amazing but he wasn't too happy with me because I wanted to use it for my model soldiers. >:D
I got the sets I have from somebody on here and my first trys with the original plaster were hopless so I gave up using it I think the plaster was too old. I am now using precision plaster by a company called Glebe works ok but you always get breakages which is useful for this project away :D
I aways take these competitions as a chance to build something I can use in my games, it may not be as sexy as some but I bet I will get more use out of it
Looking at you brother ;)

Looking great, man!
I only use high quality dental plaster for my casts. Other qualities is just to dusty and fragile.

Plaster for the win! :D
The house (or what's left of it) looks pretty good already.
Will you be adding floors and other detailing, or will you forego that because of the sheer volume of ruins you're going for?
-
Will be adding some floors but most of the floor will be covered in rubble
-
Having seen this first hand, I can safely say it looks even better in real life. Once you have all your different rubbles you've been collecting on there, thats going to look very realistic Colin!
-
Starting to come together nicely 8)
-
Ah Linka... I had a vast number of those moulds. God knows what happened to them. Long gone...
Thanks for helping me relive childhood memories, Colin :D
Fascinated to see how this turns out :)
-
Looking good Colin 8)
-
Thanks Guys
I too am facinated to see how it turns out :D
This is a very basic set I have there are only about 10 molds
4 for stone and 3 for bricks and a couple for roof tiles
So a lot of the time I have to cut casts to get the shapes I want.
I could also do with investigating a stronger plaster I am just using what I had.
I have been told dental plaster works better. Maybe for the next build.
-
I have been told dental plaster works better. Maybe for the next build.
It's what I always use (including now), and it dries hard as rock. I once dropped a cast rock facing that was dried thoroughly, and it actually left a small dent in the laminate floor!
It's obviously not as easy to cut or break as regular plaster, but I tend to use a Tamiya hobby saw for that, and it works a treat. Only straight, outside cuts, of course.
One tip; when you need to cut or break the stuff, do it a few hours after casting. It'll be hard and dry on the outside, but the inside will still be soft, so it's a lot easier to manipulate still...
-
What plaster are you using?
-
It's a dental plaster I sourced from a Dutch hobby materials chain called Pipoos. It's aimed at middle aged women taking up crafts like card making, clay sculpting, flower arranging; you know...
But apparently, also plaster casting!
I've added a picture of the bags I get there, but I doubt it's going to help you along much.
The Netherlands are not Royston Vasey but still, I guess 'this is a local shop, for local people'... lol
-
Still going with this build, even though I dropped the last house I pictured, it is now a real ruin
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/51/1912-200521131553-513961862.jpeg)
The other two bases are still going

Still to add more rubble and a fallen roof
The other base

These are looking very good so far. And the details will make it also inevitably rather sad. Seeing someone's wardrobe lying in the street next to what is left of their home is a rather melancholy sight.
-
Nice one Colin! The details are really going to make this one! 8) 8) 8)
-
Rubble is building up nicely 8)
The dropped house might still serve as rubble on other bases perhaps?
-

I agree- it's coming along great.

Well that is the building done just to try and paint it now :? :'( :'(

Very nice!

Cheers guys need to wait till next week to see any more

I quite like how your bases for the buildings are irregular yet at the same time fit nicely together- great idea.
-
Thanks guys

My town is for 20 mm
And that is my entry finished and sent
I wouldn't have finished with out the extra time added on
Good luck to everyone
Looking forward to seeing what everyone has done.
-
Very nice looking build!
-
Really cool - tat will look good painted :o :-*
-
I agree - building stuff you plan on using on the tabletop is the way to go! Now, how often we end up using it, that's another matter. I think my Leonardo da Vinci flyer has made it to the tabletop once. I imagine your ruins will get used quite a bit. Good call!

I though I would show some more pictures of my build as I am out of the contest

Nice work and very useful terrain - and I think that is what all of us were aiming for.
-
A lovely looking build Colin.
The extra brick scatter helps tie the separate parts together :)
-
Thanks guys
Cutting out and painting all those bricks was a pain lol
And so is the clear-up
-
The extra brick scatter helps tie the separate parts together :)
I agree - love it! I like the way the two pieces fit together and form one larger piece of urban rubble.
-
Excellent job all round Colin. And you pushed him mighty close! :)
