So, I'm hoping to be able to drop my hat in the ring here.
I've haven't been as busy on here as I would have like recently due to family commitments. I'm hoping the BSC will give me that push not to just sit in front of the telly once the Wee Man goes to bed at night!! ::)
I've been getting into Battletech for a wee while now, I think its about time to get some specific terrain for it. I'm planning on building a smashed up Leopard Dropship. Just newly crashed and still on fire. It'll have lots of debris kicking about making it difficult terrain for the mechs.
I drew a wee sketch trying to get some ideas....

Good idea :-* :-* :-*
I have a lighter you can borrow to set your rubbish on fire when you are ready lol lol lol
-
Leopard!? Stop faffing and do a Union like you really want to! ;)

....and I've got some explosives to blow yours in to rubble! ;)

I've actually realised a Leopard will be too big. Its supposed to fit an Atlas cleanly in there. Quick measurements seem to put the width at about 30cm across. And its a lot longer than it is wide! :o
I think I'll just make a version of my own! I need a new name though......? ???
This looks cool AnyM :)
Interested to see how you approach the repreesentation of smoke.
Thanks. I used some sort of spongy foam to do something for a flame effect for some Terminators a while ago. Thats my initial idea.

That flame is fantastic! Thus should be good.

AndyM's competing, that's it. I'm out lol
Battletech! Great subject. Looking forwarf to seeing your end result.

lol
I’d settle for another piece of finished terrain at the end of the BSC but I agree the lineup is looking pretty damn impressive this year

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the support! 8)
So I've made a start.
As I said before, I quickly realised how BIG this was going to be, so I'm just going to do my own version of a Battletech dropship. It won't be as flat. In fact its starting to look more like the ship from Starship Troopers.
I've sized everything against an Atlas. I'm using foam core for the underlying structure and foamed PVC(like you get from signs) for the armour. Its easily detailed with a sharp point for the panel lines...
The foamed PVC is also fairly easy to bend and curve. A wee bit of teasing, some superglue and a LOT of tape to hold it in place while the glue dries. Its solid enough when dried.

I'll add some raised details at a later date. Next is the nose and cockpit area. I think I'll stick with the Leopard style cockpit, but I'm thinking of a rounded nose, more like the Spaceshuttle?

Cheat!
lol
-
I'm not even sure of what I will be doing, and he is almost done... I really love the BSC lol
Looking great so far.
-
And he's won already :D :D
Nice work with the paneling. 8)

Cheat!
lol
I refer you to article 15, subsection B, paragraph 15, sentence 4, word 326 of the Pain In The Arse Modellers Handbook(thats the same book that says 'that kind of Grey your painting your toy soldiers is wrong for WWII Germans of the 2nd Battaliin, 5th squad when they were on holiday in Greece the second week in May').......it says your wrong! lol lol lol
Actually, I refer you to Mr Hammers!...
It is not cheating. You are allowed to start. I will just not start tallying the participants before I fire the gun, so to speak.
If my Brother can cheat, so can I. lol lol lol
I'm not even sure of what I will be doing, and he is almost done... I really love the BSC lol
Looking great so far.
Thanks mate, but I've still got the hardest part to do. Somehow I need to make enough rubbish/junk at the back to make it look wrecked!!.....on no! Then I've got to make loads of smoke snd flames and paint it all!!!....what I'm I doing!?!?....I should have picked something easy! :'( :'( :'(
And he's won already :D :D
Nice work with the paneling. 8)
Thanks Vanvlak. Looking at the list of talented names already on here?....No chance!!
BTW I'm thinking calling the ship 'Linear Assault Frigate 21'. I couldn't think how to get BSC in there!
-
lol lol
-
Broken ship crashed.
Looking like the ship from the Expanse?
Looks great :-* :-* :-*
-
The spaceship is looking really good, reminds me of Expanse, too.
-

You could have it operated by the Basildon Shipping Corporation.
-
Great (head) start!
How about:
Batallion Sized Cargohauler Mk21?
Battle Scout Courier Mk21?
Battlemech Strike Carrier mk21?
Or my favourite:
Basically Shitty Contraption mk21? ;D
-
Basically Shitty Contraption mk21? ;D
"The last twenty did poorly, but we really worked all the kinks out for 21!"
-
I think Battlemech Strike Carrier has got to be the best so far. Brken Crashed Ship is very descriptive! lol Basildon must REALLY up its ship building game in the future! lol Here's the rubbish I came up with...
Bat Shit Crazy
Battletech Shuttle Cruiser
Bubble Sugar Candy
Big Slug Clappers
Barrys Stereo Cassettes
Brenda Shows Class
Bigfoots Smelly Cat
Battle Snail Combat
Big Silly Craft
-
Basically Shitty Contraption mk21? ;D
Official name notwithstanding, this is what the crew and maintenance personnel refer to the thing as when it's being cantankerous, with varying degrees of affection depending on just how cantankerous the thing is being!
Fantastic start, can't wait to see how this progresses!
-
Cracking work Andy!
Whilst Andy may well win,he is very good. That’s not really the name of the game, well just a little...it’s the building and social aspect of the BSC,for me anyway :)
-
Thanks gents!
Just a small update.
I'm using ALL my spare odds and ends from building stuff over years. The punched holes in the framework brings back nightmares(and a sore hand!) from building a Zeppelin with my Bro years ago! :'(

It work great for plastic to plastic. Not so well for foamed pvc to foamed pvc....although, where I pushed plastic rod into the soft foam, the glue works just fine.

I know....hopefully it doesn't end up the same size as the Zeppelin! :o
Looking Good
Thanks Mick.
So, as a break from doing gubbins on the back of the front section, I started building the broken away engine pod. Again just foam core and foamed pvc. There is some green stuff pushed into a circular cut out and sculpted into turbine blades. I'm starting to think my bases are going to be too small! I'm not sure if its worth cutting the base off of this and making it bigger or making a full 2x2 board with all the various bits scattered on it? ???

Start again :D :D
Very nice :D :-* :-*

Is that part of that 'Pain in the Arse Modellers Handbook'?
Thanks again guys!

Nice putty work on those engines...it’s going to be a beast when finished 8)
-
Just noticed the hex base, are you going to mount it all like that?
-
That was the original plan. Although, they now seem too small. I'm swithering on making bigger hex bases or a full 2x2' board. Not sure yet. What do you think?
-
For the hexes to work do they not all need to be the same size?
How would you do a 2x2' board?
-

I guess keeping them on multiples of hexes might make them easier to store/transport than a 2’ board, although the latter would give you more room to add extra to the base ?

As Akula says Colin, just do multiples of hex bases. The size I now need though, is going to be huge! I've totally miscalculated the size this thing needs to be. Even broken up, its going to be big! :'(

I tried a wee bit to see what the smoke is going to look like.....

Its going to need some PVA glue to make it solid.
-
That is SO cool 8) 8) 8)
-
Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Very cool. Its not complete without a full lance of destroyed mechs though... >:D
-
Coming right along! I can't wait to see how the smoke turns out.
-
Love the tubing sticking out of the wreckage.
-
Lovely work mate - is Colin going to set fire to it for the photos? ;)
-
Awesome! 8)
The nose of the craft, in profile, reminds me a bit of Colonial One from BSG (that's a good thing ;) ).
And yes; this is going to be one hog of a project, but nothing as dear as that zeppelin, obviously. Although I'm thrilled to see you found the courage to pick up the perforator again... ;D
-
Thanks guys! 8)

Actually....I DO have a smashed up 3d print of a Marauder! The blasted thing broke into a thousand pieces when it fell off a table! Resin for printing seems very fragile!!
Lovely work mate - is Colin going to set fire to it for the photos? ;)
We still never got around to doing a Hindenberg with the Zeppelin! ;)
So, I've decided against the hex bases! None of the other terrain we use for big Battletech has them so it'll look out of place!....actually, thats just an excuse!....it was going to be a bugger to cut ALL the angles in the wood with a craft knife! :( This way it'll fit in with any other sci-fi 15mm we play in the future.

The painted flames are part of something else, I just wanted to see if I liked the colours.
The front of the ship will rest on the rocks at that side of the base, as if thats what's brought it to a stop.
-
The new base looks good, and it sounds like you’ve made the right choice if it means it fits in with your other terrain
:)
-
I think that you have made the right (and pragmatic) decision on the basing.
-
After a game like the last one I should soon be able to supply you enough wrecked mechs lol
I know of a commando with a bad headach :D
BASE IS LOOKING GOOD

Ha!.......ha!...........ha! :-[
Listen, you had one lucky shot. That Spider of yours is walking around like that knight from Monty Pythons Holy Grail with a missing arm. 'Tis only a flesh wound'
I swear to god! That new game room of your has dice force field, that makes ALL my dice rolls shit! :'(
Thanks for the support guys.

We call it the 'home ground advantage' , and I've got one too! At least, ever since my new game room was inaugurated. Although I fear that once that 'new smell' has completely worn off, the force field will be gone too... ;D

You need to change the batteries on your secret Dice roll adjuster ;)

So I've managed to get a wee bit more done.
The broken away engine pod now has some internal working and a couple of mouthwash caps for engine bells.

And the rest of the bases have now been cut...

Awesome !
I love the excellent detailing you always put in, and the bells look spot on 8)

Loving it 8)

I love that pitting in the hull- that should come up nicely when you get to painting.

Thanks guys!

Hopefully. Thats the plan. I'm trying to make some of the dents look like laser/cannon damage too. Damage done in a kinda teardrop shape.

I think I'm done with this engine pod. I've got a bag of MDF off cuts from stuff I done a while ago. Thats going to be my scattered wreckage.

Lovely work mate... guessing you are going to light the interior of the wrecked engine mounting?
8)

Yes; the damage looks really good, and the engine pod is awesome 8)
Is that a bit of landing gear on the third template, or is it something else?

Is that a Tintin rocket in there though? :D

Have you tried to find 15mm crew that you can print

Na. I'll be taking pictures in daylight, and when you do that, the tealight effects are invisible.

The Tin Tin rocket was MDF bits for my wee boys toy box. They ended up being too small and we went with big sharks instead! ;)
That is landing gear. I needed to use the wee circle off-cuts from the spaceship frame for something. They look a tad small but it'll do.
Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Have you tried to find 15mm crew that you can print
I figure dead bodies a bit too gruesome. ;) Kyle will probably end up playing with this after all! lol
So, I'm nearly getting to the painting stage. The 6th of June is rolling round waaay too fast!! The 3 smaller bits are ready for a splodge of paint. The main piece still needs some rocks/sand and some debris. I found myself wanting to go too far with the details. I needed to rein it in if I want to finish!! o_o o_o o_o

What do you think Jim, Chris Foss style paint scheme?....
-
Awsome work; at this scale, it's quite something, and it certainly will dominate the table 8)
But as much as I love Chris Foss's work, for me, it doesn't really gel with the Battletech universe. If this is a combat dropship (and a small one at that ;) ), I'd rather opt for someting camouflaged. Probably a scheme appropriate for the theatre it's going to drop into.
Much like the mechs it transported really. Apart from some units that took pride in their colours (and that includes all of the clans, obviously ;) ), most Inner Sphere units were much too sensible to stick out, and would adopt localized camouflage schemes for their deployments.
So; go with something to match your table, I'd say... :)

Amazing build all round.

Not seen that one before. May have to do another ship.

It's beautiful already.

It’s looking like a show stopper already Andy...really like the proposed paint scheme
8)
-
Thanks again guys!
So these will probably be the last pictures I can show before next Sunday. The smaller pieces are all painted and ready, but I'm going to struggle getting this beast painted up in time! Its 26 inches long (about 65cm)!!

That is huge. It's going to be amazing once you have finished painting it.

I love the broken structural elements/beams at the broken points. Ace build man!

Ehhhhh.....No! lol
Thanks for all the support guys, thats my entry now painted and submitted. Good luck to everyone, I can't wait to see what everybody comes up with!! 8)

Seconded :)
Love that style.

Aah what a lovely wreck you've got there.

That is outstanding, Andy! I save my MDF cast-off bits, too, but have never put them to such a theatrical use... :o

Even though I advocated going with a Battletech inspired muted camo scheme, I'm now really hoping for a Foss inspired paintjob; it won't be as in-universe appropriate, but it'll look so much cooler... 8)
