Title: Somewhere in Calvados. My Bolt action painting & building log.(Updated 29/7/22)
Post by: modelwarrior on April 07, 2021, 04:40:22 PM
As mentioned on the tin,my building and painting log for Bolt Action in France 1944.

Currently working on a chateau and just finished the gates.

The gates are made by debrisofwar and I added the gate posts(made from styrene) and changed the look of gates a bit. Pictures before painting and of the basic gates included.

Next up a fountain by Wizkids. This is going in the centre of the lawn. Very easy to paint and comes ready primed in grey.

I bought the same fountain...then opted for a cherub!  It’s a nice piece, but the fork on mine is very warped.

How did you manage it please?

Very thin wire glued onto the trident and then some thick paint over it.

About time I added some back filler on this project which has been hold for a bit. The initial idea was to build  a Chateau for Bolt Action due to a lack of ready made buildings on the market. Sarissa now make one but its too small for my purposes. I wanted a fully playable Chateau of some size with an alternative plan of using this for an Allo Allo gaming as well. I plan to build the cafe(already in motion) in Nouvion and use the Chateau with the gateau as an extra playable area. The plan is to do one interior room of the Chateu similar to the Colonels in the tv show.

Anyway some pictures of the project so far:

You certainly aren’t doing things by halves are you!

Thanks Fred, its a bit of a beast to be honest but at least it seperates into sections allowing access and helping with storage and weight.

Where did you get your windows from please.

I know a man who is very handy at turning drawings into laser cut reality. The windows and doors were bespoke made for the project as I based the Chateau on a real one. It turns out that getting bespoke made windows and doors is cheaper than buying them ready made, especially as I buy in bulk for other projects as well. I can pm his email address if you want it but be aware he is busy at the moment with other work(not mine lol) ?

Small update and dry run of how everything all fits together. Eventually I aim to run a full wall around the grounds, a lake to the rear of the Chateau and add more trees. Internally only the ground floor is semi complete with another three floors to decorate.

Everything can be easily removed and there is access to all four floors for playability. The chateau base just simply drops into place between the small retaining walls and because its all made from foam card it has hardly any weight.

Thanks, I aim to go for the slightly run down/moth ball looking Chateau look which makes it a prime target for German requistion and HQ building. Thus a perfect target for a quick Commando raid or partisan attack or the Chateau with the gateau when I go for a little Allo Allo.

A couple of new additions to the battlefield in a Churchill AVRE and Panther. The Churchill is Warlord/Italeri with Avre version with S&S kit conversion and the Panther is a Blitzkrieg model.

I was making some walls at the same time and could not help myself going for a quick diorama at the same time. The diorama is based on the 2nd Essex Regiments attack on Tilly-Sur-Seulles on the 18th and 19th of June 1944 which was supported by the 81st Assault Sqn RE(Churchill AVRE). A chance encounter happened as a Churchill AVRE armed with a spigot mortar came round a corner and stumbled upon a Panther tank. The Churchill took a snap shot at point blank range and missed but luckily either hit a telegraph pole or tree close by destroying the Panther.

And some more photos. The black and white photo backdrop is actually of Tilly after the battle in 1944.

Three layers of foam card. As long as you clamp the gluing card it will dry into whatever shape you want.

Final bit of completed painting for a while. These are a batch of basementscenery 1/56 Panzer crew tank sets and also some Perry miniatures converted DAK troops. And right at the end is a Renault AHN 3.5 ton 3d printed and finally Nouvion`s finest line up.

Watch out for the postage costs from Germany, nearly as much as the minis :o Best place a largish order and get your money worth.

Small update on what I have been up to as of late.

The Tithe Barn at Crepon in Calvados has been around since 1500 and is still standing to this day. It was perfect for a unique bit of terrain for my WW2 wargaming board. I might also use it for some other period wargaming as well. Built from foam card and wood with a little bit of artistic licence(which translates as I left out the difficult bits :).

I found this barn on Google maps(random searching about) and by a slight chance of fate it played a small part in the Normandy landings as it was used as a Rafadrome after fighting had passed through Crepon. See the link: https://rafbeachunits.info/units/uk-beach-squadrons-april-august-1944/4-beach-squadron/rafadrome/ (https://rafbeachunits.info/units/uk-beach-squadrons-april-august-1944/4-beach-squadron/rafadrome/)

And a few more piccies: I originally played with making the barn longer(more true to scale) but it would of dominated the board in size. It needs to fit into farm complex.

Nice work here in this thread.  Love that barn!

Thanks. Apparently an 88m Flak held up forces advancing towards Crepon so thats my next thing to do. A nice 88mm sandbag pit and Camouflage in the wheat field near the barn.

I love Crepon - have spent many stays at the Ferme de Ranconniere.

I've driven past the barn countless times but never taken notice.  Thanks for sharing the story of it.

You've built a great model - amazing work on the roof supports.
