Title: BSC2021 marianas_gamer Rough Jungle
Post by: marianas_gamer on April 07, 2021, 08:03:22 PM
I always look forward to the BSC. It motivates me to add something that I am proud of to my table.  This year I will return to my jungle terrain. I am going to try to put together a unifying piece that brings together my pandanus builds, bamboo, and deciduous trees. Cork will be used as a base and to construct undulating limestone and pinnacles. I will be scratch building both pandanus and bamboo trees and painting purchased plastic bamboo and a deciduous tree. I do not anticipate a really large build, trying instead to construct a terrain piece that fits on my table and can be easily constructed during the BSC period.

Here is my entry from two years ago.

and here are examples of other jungle terrain of the kind that I would like to integrate. Note that the bamboo and the deciduous tree are commercial products - all repainted of course.

Today I started on my project. I am going to base this jungle terrain on plastic backed cork coasters like I usually do. So I tart with a 12 inch coaster from Home Depot.
(http://i.imgur.com/3CUHSjr.jpg) (https://imgur.com/3CUHSjr)
Than I developed a basic plan for the laydown and how I planned to trim the coaster.
(http://i.imgur.com/UmBe9YE.jpg) (https://imgur.com/UmBe9YE)
The commercial portions of the build are two deciduous trees and some bamboo. The trees are plastic and the bamboo is plastic over wire.

I have trimmed the coaster to the shape I want for the base.
(http://i.imgur.com/g98uiwP.jpg) (https://imgur.com/g98uiwP)
Next I placed the trees where I wanted them and traced their footprint on the base,
(http://i.imgur.com/R394J3B.jpg) (https://imgur.com/R394J3B)
Finally for the initial base I cut out the footprint of the trees so that they can be glued into place later. I also beveled the sides of the base so that it will be flush with the mat on the table.

The trees and bamboo have also been undercoated for later painting. Tomorrow I will start to build topography and karst features on the base.

I’m thinking of adding to my jungle terrain too.  Where are the trees from?

I believe those are Schleich trees if I'm not mistaken.

The trees come from a children's African animals play set. I was alerted that the was available at Ross by a fellow on LAF. Since we actually have Ross stores on Guam I went out and found the set. It comes with 4 of the trees. The animals are not worth keeping for table top gaming so I passed them on to my grandkids. I am not sure of the brand.

I have started working on the banana grove.  The trunks will be glued rolls of paper.
(http://i.imgur.com/E4iYbGS.jpg) (https://imgur.com/E4iYbGS)
The leaves are lengths of florist wire cut and sandwiched between lengths of masking tape.
(http://i.imgur.com/yY311fx.jpg) (https://imgur.com/yY311fx)
trimmed
(http://i.imgur.com/wziSePU.jpg) (https://imgur.com/wziSePU)
Shaped and cut along the side of the leaves to give the distinctive banana leaf raggedness.

Now I need to get the trunks of the patch together and cut their footprint into the base.

Will the rolled paper trunks be strong enough once the glue dries?

Just thinking of possibly getting squashed if stored?

Thanks everyone!
@ AKULA I have used this technique now for over 10 years and have never had a problem with the rolled paper crushing. They are fairly rigid because I roll them tight. However, rough treatment would certainly damage them. Think of them of having slightly greater strength than balsa.

Some more progress.

I have put together the banana patch and cut the base footprint into the cork. The patch will receive some more glue and the leaves will be reshaped after that and then, of course, the painting. The pandanus trees start next.

Wow ... can certainly see the effort that is going into that banana plant

Good work Lon  :)

This is the last update I can make before I get into spackling and painting. The last scratch built tree, a pandanus, is completed. I have put the first coat on the deciduous trees but I don't think that showing them is verboten at this point as they are nowhere near finished. There will be bamboo toward the center of the piece but I will drill them in after they are completely painted. Three views:

Thank you AKULA and Helen.  I have completed painting on all of the trees but the pandanus, which has not been started. This morning I finished spackling the base and glued down sand. The toothpicks are just placeholders for the bamboo. I have already drilled into the base to seat them but needed to keep the spackle and base coating from closing the holes. The spackling gives the base more heft, eliminates flexibility (and future cracking), and creates a more paintable surface.

Now it is just a waiting period for the spackle to harden and for a break in the rain so that I can spray everything a flat black.

I hadn't known that Home Depot sold place mats - which section are they in...?   lol

What a great way to scratch-build your own trees! I look forward to seeing the finished product in all of its jungle glory...  :-*
