Title: BSC2021 Bearwoodman's Frostgrave Fountain of the Olfactomancers
Post by: Bearwoodman on April 07, 2021, 11:01:36 PM
I am nervous about deadlines, so I will try to keep my project modest in scope to increase the chance of it actually being completed. My current plan does, however, involve me having a go at techniques that I have never tried before, so there will still be plenty of opportunity for disaster, failure and humiliation.

I am thinking of a piece of terrain for use in Frostgrave. My friends and I are very slowly working our way through the Thaw of the Lichlord campaign and one of the scenarios we have completed included special rules for movement across a frozen river that meant that a character ran the risk of slipping over on the icy surface if they attempted to make a double move (ran). I remember it distinctly as the only character to suffer this indignity in our game was my mate's Animal Companion - a polar bear!

I am not going to make a whole river, but instead a smaller area of frozen water that you might find within a frozen city such as a public fountain. I have no design yet, but here are a couple of images from the internet that will inform the process. I want it to be large enough to tempt players to take the risk of crossing it!

Next I need to do some drawings and to try and work out how to make ice and icicles!

Thanks for the tip Clach Umha, I will look into that. I must confess my initial review of options did point in the direction of resin and an alternative is welcome!

Thanks Clach, I will (time permitting) try a few processes and see how I get on.

I have been thinking of the design of the fountain and doodling a few ideas. In terms of size ideally it will fit into an A4 RUB for storage purposes, so long as it is still big enough to be terrain rather than just cover.

I think I might make the pond pentagonal, to make it more magical but also because straight lines are easier!

I am also thinking about trying to sculpt some gargoyles. With my lack of sculpting ability they will no doubt end up looking deformed and grotesque, but for fantasy gargoyles hopefully that will fine! In my mind I can see icicles hanging from their gaping mouths.... We will see!

I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the design of the fountain that will form part of my build. The ice on the pool surrounding the fountain, which is the "difficult terrain" part of my build, is fairly straightforward in terms of concept (if not necessarily execution) but I have been struggling to make design decisions about the fountain.

Unlike those pieces being produced by my fellow BSC entrants which are aimed at a specific historical or real life setting, there are no real parameters for the design of a new piece of fantasy/ magical architecture. What shape should it be? Should there be a statue(s) at the centre? If so who? Why was it built?

I have decided that first I need to establish the background story to the construction of the fountain. This background will then inform its design.

I note that the Frostgrave Campaign "The Maze of Malcor" revealed that as well as the 10 great  schools of magic there were many 'lessor schools', (including the 5 lesser schools of magic that make up "the Pentangle"). My fountain will be a monument to a lost lesser school of magic invented by me...

Olfactomancer

Olfactomancers practice magic that relates to the sense of smell. Believing this sense to be hopelessly underdeveloped in most humans they seek to enhance their own ability to detect and analyse smells and to produce scents that influence behaviour, whether by repelling, attracting, soothing or unnerving weaker minds.  In some ways related to the Sonancer school of magic (which channels the power of sound and vibration) practitioners of Olfactomancey consider their own art to be comparatively less well appreciated, far more subtle but also potentially more effective. Although not strictly necessary for the practice this form of magic, Olfactomancers often sport a long or bulbous nose and large nostrils and all aspire to possession of a "Deus Nasus" or "nose of the divine", their phrase to describe a perfect nose with superhuman powers giving its owner the power to understand and manipulate the world around them through the sense of smell alone.
Also known as: Smell Sages, Wiffy Wizzies
Symbols: Three parallel vertical wavy lines, the outline of the Deus Nasus in profile

...Wiffy Wizzies...
Mrs. Codsticker is always complaining about my 'wiffy wizzies'. I am going to tell her I am an Olfactomancer and she should accord me the appropriate respect! >:D

OT: As far as the statue goes, I think I would splurge for an appropriate figure from a manufacturer of your preference. You may have a hard time sourcing a statue of a famous Olfactomancer though. Tiny furniture makes a virgin Mary statue ( link (https://tiny-furniture.com/products/virgin-mary-statues)) which is fairly generic. They also make a cleric, paladin and a a 4 kings collection of statues (link (https://tiny-furniture.com/products/four-kings-statues-unp)).

Many student Olfactomancers find themselves drawn to the gentle and subtle practices of the art, creating scents to unwittingly entice, convince or beguile their subject. But there are some, however (and it sounds as if you, Codsticker, might be one of them) for whom the production of violent and offensive odours comes more naturally.

Thanks for the link to the potential statues, I had not seen them before and they are beautiful figures. Currently, however, I am pursuing an alternative home-made option...

Fountain of the Olfactomancers

After many doodles, sketches and plans (most of them traced in condensation on the inside of the perspex door of my shower enclosure) I have decided to construct a model of the unusual fountain that stood in front of the original College of Olfactomancey building in Felstad. Constructed during the brief period when Olfactomancey was considered one of the more fashionable lesser schools of magic and was enjoying a short lived surge in popularity, the fountain featured at each corner outlets that released into the air magical scents concocted within the College. This prompted numerous complaints about bad smells from the neighbours (a tannery and a municipal sewage works) which the Wizards inside the College scorned as the backward rantings of closed minded Philistines.

The centrepiece of the fountain was a giant sculpture of the Deus Nasus floating above the pool, water constantly pouring out of each huge nostril into the pool below to symbolise the magical power that flows from this great and most underrated orifice.

I attach scribbles that give some indication of my thinking.

Now I had better think about actually building something...

Oh good, it's not just me that uses this highly effective planning technique! Mine is on the tile of the tub enclosure, but same principle!

Looking forward to this, should be an awesome and hilarious build!

I love it... very Monty-python-esque  :)

This! Needs a companion floating foot fountain from the rival school of Footomancers for full Pythonic effect, maybe?  :D

Thanks all!

I have commenced construction. So far it is all cereal packet and superglue on a plasticard base. I have started the odour releasing vents to go on the corners.

What a wonderfully ridiculous idea; I love it!  8)

To me, it doesn't evoke Python, as much as Diskworld instead. There's something very Pratchetty about obscure schools of magic, especially when they're suitably arrogant towards non-initiates.

The build is looking good so far. I take it the difficulty of this terrain piece comes from its oderous nature?
Title: Re: BSC2021 Bearwoodman's Frozen Fountain
Post by: Bearwoodman on April 25, 2021, 07:34:34 PM
Thanks Deothar! The original idea was for the difficult terrain aspect to come from the slippery surface of the frozen waters, meaning that players who tried to run on it might fall over and injure themselves. There is also the risk that the ice might give way and a figure fall through into the icy waters (and who knows how deep the water in a wizard's fountain might be?).

But, as you suggest, braving the strange and powerful smells that emanate from this fountain must present a whole other challenge for adventurers (albeit one that I have not yet formulated rules for). Truly it would be a very reckless Frostgrave player who attempted to retrieve a treasure token placed under the (literal and metaphorical) nose of the Olfactomancers!

My hobby time this weekend was spent trying to sort out the corners of the pool.  I was unable to arrive at a clear design that I was happy with in my head or on paper so I decided to just get stuck in with cardboard and milliput and see what happened. I was reasonably satisfied with the results eventually, and I hope that the vents are vaguely reminiscent of nostrils without being an actual statue of a nose. In any event I cannot spend any more time fussing over these bits so they will have to do!

While changing a light bulb I think I chanced upon an object that could serve as the base of the basin into which the Great Nose discharges.

Now to think about the nose itself.

Codsticker: Thank you, I do hope you are right. We will probably only be able to tell for sure once it is all done.

AKULA: I am glad you like it, still a lot to do though and I keep getting distracted!

Clach Umha: Thank you. I feel personally that having a bit of background and narrative makes the designing easier. And adding a tiny dash of absurdity amuses me!

I note in the BSC2021 rules that it is acceptable to include in photographs of the build a figure for scale, so I have been thinking about which figure to use for mine. It already have a small collection of Frostgrave-appropriate figures, but none seemed quite right for this project. So, cheerfully disregarding the very real risk of dissipating my limited hobby time and enthusiasm on a non-essential element of this project, I decided to create my own Olfactomancer!

I combed the Lead Mountain and came across a number of official Frostgrave wizards. I selected a candidate and made a few small tweaks...

The Olfactomancer's Handkerchief

Wizards of all schools are known for using a wand to channel and direct their magic. Other objects commonly carried by adventuring wizards whatever their academic background include staffs, crystal balls, magic rings or amulets or more conventional weapons enhanced through enchantment. Olfactomancers with their highly sensitive noses and skill at creating powerful odours, are alone amongst spellcasters in favouring a scented handkerchief as their primary weapon. At a vital moment in battle an Olfactomancer will pause to inhale from their favoured piece of fabric (often delicately embroidered with the Wizard's initials and tucked up the sleeve when not required) imbued with magical perfumes before unleashing their chosen spell on an awestruck enemy/grateful ally.
I slightly modified a Soothsayer Apprentice and added a handkerchief made from folded paper. I will paint him as I continue the fountain build.

Explorers of the part of the Frozen City home to the Fountain of the Olfactomancers may chance upon lost scented handkerchiefs dating back to the heyday of this magical school. I have not created a whole new treasure table to roll on but here is a selection of a few lost Olfactomancer handkerchiefs that may be uncovered and their effects in game:

The Tissue of Tenacity
The scent in this handkerchief boosts resolve and concentration and a figure carrying this handkerchief gains +1 Will for the whole game. There is no need to spend an action to inhale from the handkerchief as the odour is strong and penetrating, it is enough for the figure to have it on their person.

The Healing Hankie
A figure may spend an action to inhale the restorative fragrance of this handkerchief which then restores up to 5 lost points of Health. It may not take a figure above its normal starting Health. The magic in the handkerchief is used up after one inhalation.

The Snot Rag of Senseless Slaughter
The smell from this handkerchief triggers a berserk violent rage in anyone who inhales it. A figure may spend one action to inhale from this handkerchief after which it gains plus 1 fight BUT may then do nothing other than move as quickly as possible into hand-to-hand combat with the nearest figure whether friend or foe and fight until they or their opponent is dead.  If the figure who has inhaled the scent of this handkerchief survives they must continue to seek hand to hand combat with the next closest figure and the next and so on until either a) they are killed; b) they are the only figure left on the board; or c) they pass a Will roll which they may attempt once per turn with a Target Number of 18 at which point the effect of the handkerchief wears off.

Handkerchief of Brief Thief Relief
A figure may spend an action to inhale from this handkerchief after which for one turn only it may not be harmed by a figure of the Thief soldier type.

Thanks for the encouragement all!

Cast your own nose...?  lol

An excellent idea for a fairly unusual self portrait!  Assuming I could do it without suffocating myself it would also result in something more anatomically correct than just me playing with a ball of milliput. Unfortunately I read your message too late so instead I have produced a rather odd looking a hand made effort:
I have also worked a bit on the plinth for the basin into which the Nose discharges. The flight stands up the nostrils are to support the Nose above the basin. I have also been adding some slabs to the steps to the pool.

A little bit of progress on the pool, nearly ready for undercoating, and I used a ball of tin foil to add a rough surface to the back of the Nose to contrast with the smoothly carved front.

Blackwolf: No, I have not (Deothar and others are right that Pratchett is normally more my level) but I have googled him and as his story The Nose sounds interestingly grotesque so I have just ordered a copy on ebay for 2 pounds 94 including delivery. Very educational this BSC.

Deothar: Very kind of you to say so  lol

BUT:

After priming, basecoating, painting individual stones in three different colours, black wash, brown wash and green wash over the weekend, I thought that I would try and seal the washes in and dull down the glossy inks by adding a layer of varnish during my lunch break. The sun was beaming down so I sprayed it in the garden (I am currently working from home) and left it to dry while I went for a walk with Mrs B to the post office (15 minutes each way).

As you have probably guessed after about 10 minutes it started to pour with rain. We were drenched by the time we had completed our mission and returned home (the sun was out again by the time we were unlocking our front door, mocking me). I found my little cardboard fountain forlornly full of rain water. I would share a photo but that would result in disqualification from the contest and I am hopeful that it can be rescued in some form. I have tipped it upside down and just finished dabbing it dry, and it has not collapsed, or dissolved or fragmented. Maybe it will survive...

Frickin' heck!  :o

And here I was, lamenting my own setback, which now sounds like a very, very minor hickup...

I hope your work can still be rescued, because it's one of my favourites in this competition (what can I say? I just love silliness  :D ).

Make sure not to dry it by heating through means of a hairdryer, oven or even radiator; this will result in definite warping!

Give it a couple of days to breathe at room temperature, and if it does still warp, you might glue the base to a new one, to compensate.

Oh; and while drying, put weights on the edges of the base, to force it flat and prevent warping.

Good luck with the rescue, man...

Thanks Deothar. I think the base might actually be fine as it is plasticard. I have weighed down the steps as I can see them starting to bulge as they dry, so hopefully they will stay reasonably straight. If I am lucky the main effect will be to have made the paint job rather washed out and streaky, so not fatal!

When i have to dry stuff outdoors i put it in a shed.  Leaves and bugs tend to be my culprits and haven’t had spontaneous rain events.  I hope it’s salvageable as this is too creative and too well done.  Wishing you luck.

I feel for you!  I've been moving my own project in and outdoors - too big and messy to work on indoors, but the need to constantly watch for rain, things falling from trees and other concerns is real!  (I've been vegetating my project, and I'm pretty sure that it contains contributions from the neighbourhood trees)

I'm looking forward to seeing your results and best wishes for recovering the fountain from its misfortune!

Thanks for the good wishes pistolpete and Will Baille, although the more I think about it the more I feel foolish for assuming that just because it was May and the sun was shining there would be no rain for half an hour. I have lived in England pretty much all my life so I should know better!

There has been a degree of warping but not to a disastrous degree (stuff I build is never very precise or straight anyway and this fountain has been subject to the passage of time, a magical cataclysm and some very odd smells). Tonight I tried to tidy up the smeared paintwork and washes with some dry brushing and it looks acceptable. I have also started painting the Nose, going for a dark bronze look rather than the carved stone I was originally thinking, as I think this will add variety of colour to the piece and contrast nicely with the ice. I just hope the weather is better at the weekend (it rained all day today) as I want to try out my resin!

I was on track to complete my piece by the original deadline (admittedly it is much more modestly sized than many of the other entries) but the extension of the date for submission has allowed me to relax a little and my hobby time today was spent painting goblins with my son instead of frantically finishing it off and taking photos.

There has been some progress however, some of which I can share because it is not painted.  First up I have had a go at creating icicles handing from the basin using the lengths of clear fishing line superglued to a clear acrylic base.  Here is a reference photo:

And here is my work in progress.  I will add water texture effect with a dash of white paint to this to make it look more natural and more frozen:

I have also been attempting to make sheets of ice by pouring resin over cling film.  After I had described the concept of the piece to a friend he laughed and said that the frozen liquid being discharged by the Nose ought to be "snot-coloured".  I was of course disgusted by his puerile and childish comment and offended by the lack of seriousness and respect with which he treated my work.  On the other hand, I thought that perhaps giving the water a faint green magical glow might appropriately hint at the untapped and misunderstood power that the Olfactomancers seek to harness and that the Deus Nasus represents.  So I added a drop of Army Painter "Poisonous Cloud" to the mix.

And here is my plan for where the pieces will sit within the fountain:

I have also finished my Olfactomancer.

Thanks for the kind comments Clach Umha! It is the first time I have tried the ice and icicle effects I am using on this project, but I certainly cannot claim any credit for inventing them. I copied a technique used by Luke APS on YouTube to make the ice sheets, while using clear fishing line as the basis for icicles was something I saw on a miniature painting blog (I forget which one).

I am now pondering whether to add snow on top of the fountain. It will cover some imperfections, but also may obscure a lot of the effort made on the stone structure. Maybe just a little bit of melting snow in the nooks and crannies.

blimey, glad I happened upon this competition, rather buried away as it is ...

this is just an absolutely brilliant idea /project on every level, including the rules ... fantastic.

oh right, only just twigged how this works, and have seen the 'finished', play-off, posts.

Well - it turned out above brilliant.

Mikedemana: Thanks! It is great to have such encouraging feedback.

Bloggard: Thank you too! I will post some pictures on the Frostgrave board just in case there is anyone there who might be interested who has not been following the BSC.

As my entry is not progressing to the next round I am free to post some more pictures. First up is the scene I found after spraying some varnish on the fountain and leaving it in the sun while I popped out to post a letter (as recounted earlier in this thread). It is hard to make out in the photo but there is a pool of rainwater in the fountain.

And here are a few more of the finished piece:

You have to be very happy with that. The whole piece looks great but the patina on the fountain itself is particularly excellent.

By far the most innovative entry in the contest and very well executed! I also particularly like the verdigris patina on the nose.

This is brill! Also, I just realised that there must be some very clever engineering/magic to keep the nose supported  when it’s not frozen  :)

yes - just fantastic.

this is a cut above in all respects - and the rules much higher up the thread too - brilliant!

The more I see of this, the more amazed I am by it.  What a magnificent concept, so brilliantly realised.  And the icy setting is refreshing to think about after the heat wave we just went through!

Fantastic work.  Very tempted to steal some of this for my own Frostgrave “world”.  Probably not the nose, that’s too iconic, but love the icy pond.  Verdigris effect Is splendid as well.  Just think, if you’d “made” the nose from iron the rust would have looked like the nose had caught a cold…..

This build was so much fun. You nailed the verdigris and the ice.

I would have awarded this the "Best in Show" award... just sayin'. Trips my triggers for quirky and unusual, paired with excellent technical achievement.
