Title: "We only kill each other" rules
Post by: Szary on April 10, 2021, 05:55:27 PM
Have anyone read those rules?

I was eyeing their PnP terrain anyway and it seems that even the PDF edition comes with a comfortable addition of three packs. Question is - are the rules good? And are they still trading at all (you know, in historical wargaming I've seen FAR worse sites, but still - dead pictures are a dangerous sign)?

The promise of more historically grounded rules are interesting, I know that it's a bold statement on a pulp board, but I think that "gangsters" label would have the thread moved here anyway.

I understand this is an old topic, and though this puts me at risk of necro posting, im going to post my thoughts regardless, as there isnt lots of info on WOKEO as far as I can tell.

I own WOKEO and can vouch that the rules are very interesting, and lead to fun games with cool stories, but it must be stressed they are not "Hollywood" rules.

What I mean by that is, the shoot outs are very chaotic and only the most hardened, steel willed, character will be able to stay completely under control in a shoot out. Seldom do gangster characters even carry more then one magazine. "Moxie" rolls, and the shooting rules (i.e. unless you have a specific trait, you can only chose to empty your gun, take one shot, or a random number of shots to simulate an untrained shooters adrenaline) lead to things becoming unpredictable quickly once the bullets fly. I, for one, enjoy that about the rules. It makes the strategy less military tactics with gangster minis, and more staging a real mafia style hit. Police showing up pretty much guaranties a need for all gangsters to make an escape.

I understand The Armchair general site is perhaps outdated, but he is very attentive, I had my order delivered quickly and promptly in 2022, and the book itself provides lots of examples of how hits where planned and has tons of great tables to build all sorts of characters and all sorts of scenarios, from beer wars turf battles, to mafia hits of the late 40s (that can really be used for mafia conflict up to today) and even depression era bank robbers Dillinger style. My only comment is that the lay out is perhaps a bit "busy." Note there is very little for campaign play here, the TVACG claimed there would be an added campaign rules set called "Thugs life" or something like that, but he hasn't seemed to made them yet.

In conclusion, WOKEO is cool and rather unique rules set if you want to simulate criminal on criminal conflict with police intervention, or even bank heists. But keep it mind it simulates CRIMINALS fighting. If you are looking for a more traditional wargame with Hollywood bravery and military style maneuvers, you will find that these rules dont really fit that role, and something like Mad Dogs With Guns would fit that bill better.
