Title: Return to GorkaMorka (06.06.21 Grots)
Post by: Dr. Kevin Moon III esq. on April 11, 2021, 02:57:23 PM
In a moment of inspiration last week I dug out a half-finished Nazgrub Wurrzag figure and completed him. Boosted by this I dug out a few more old GorkaMorka figures that were undercoated and painted these up as well.

The group comprise a pair of plastic orks from the original game with some metal Ork bionic additions (a kustom thruster booster and a shooter arm), a metal figure with a blunderbuss and a grot with a six shooter.

I'm still keen on this as a mini-project and have won a set of bikes from eBay and dug a few more figures out of the unpainted pile. More to come hopefully.

Lovely customization and paintwork on some generally not-terrific figs - the plastic boyz, that is.

I've had one of those backpacks from the scrap prospector in my bits box for decades now waiting for just the right project.  Wish I'd picked up more of them when GW was still selling bits, as it is I keep balking at actually sticking it to something only to find myself wanting it somewhere else later on.  :)

GorkaMorka seems to be going through a bit of a revival at the moment. I noticed there was a new Discord server set up recently covering the original and the Ash Wastes Inq28 inspired version of it.

What a great paintjob - very moody and appropriate for such unsavoury-looking Orks! Well done, and ...more please?  :D

I wish I'd got the muties back in the day.

Same!  :'(

GorkaMorka seems to be going through a bit of a revival at the moment.

It's waxed and waned over the years; I think once most people have got a few games in, they've got the urge to play out of their system for a while. It's quite a lot of rules to learn and follow for what I feel boils down to a very "beer-and-pretzels" experience, and it doesn't have the sticking power of Necromunda either. And really, whilst the Digganobz gangs were all quite novel and fun, the core two gangs in the book were pretty samey (I always thought it was weird that they didn't go down the Ork Klanz route for the gangs, buy hey ho).

I have to admit that I enjoy the setting and models far more than the game, and have been eyeing up Stargrave as a way to use the models I have (no idea about the vehicles though).

Thanks guys.

I still have my muties, grots and diggas as well. Never bought the red grot though and always regret it (I'm not a huge fan of the new plastic one, especially the price!).

absolutely love this, easily one of my favourite settings (even if the rules were pretty nutty!)

Yeah, that'd be your retirement sorted. ;)

That's some very snazzy looking boyz there and I like that you're reusing the plastic figures too. I think alongside newer Orks they'll work nicely as Yoofs.

I have a weird relationship with GoMo. Love the game, love the concept, and all the fun that went into those rules. However, it was the testing ground for the horrible things 3rd edition 40k did to Orks. It's all very complicated. :D

Anyway, I really like GoMo. A friend and I even started a new campaign a few years ago. Of course we haven't followed up yet (as with some campaigns, ehem), but that's the way things go. Looking forward to seeing more of this project!

I do think GOMO needs a revival from GW, it has a lot of potential but requires the right kind of sheparding and rules review.

I'd say make it either...

A. A bolt on to Necromunda (Would require some work, but its fairly simple)

B. Give it to specialist games, have all new rules with a starter composed of unique sculpts (usable in 40k) with Orks vs Diggas. Green on Green is boring. This way as well you can clearly differentiate  the orks from the Diggas ruleswise, rather then what originally happened with the Digganob supplement adding extra core rules.

Current lore for Necromunda includes a ruined hive that's infested with greenskins from an earlier invasion, theoretically contained by a cordon of planetary militia and occasionally swept by kill teams, investigated by Inquisitorial agents, and sometimes explored illegally by criminals looking for loot and salvage.  It would be pretty easy to reskin GM into that setting, right down to the orks trying to collect enough scrap from the hive ruins to build a ship to get out of there and back a proper Waaagh.  Hives (especially half-collapsed ones) are plenty big enough for vehicle racing, and that's an obvious way for them to take the main game in the long run when they run out of traditional gangs to releases splatbooks for.

Dear god, please, no. :D I mean I wouldn't wanna take away anybody's joy in that if they found joy in it, but I have no interest in GW touching GoMo, Necromunda, Epic, BB, etc. etc. what so ever. These games did well. The communities took them and improved on them after GW dropped them as a business decision. The rules are around, figures are around (in GoMo's case, more so than ever). The last thing anybody needs is for GW to revisit a game that works to the community's content, size up the figures by 30% (also: current GW Orc/Ork faces *shudder*), size down the rulebook by 30% and pester us with endless hype, pre-orders and limited editions. What the communities did with the former 'specialist games' was take out the one factor which annoyed people the most when GW was removed from the equation.

Okay, that's a bit polemic there, but I don't feel that GW doing anything with these games actually adds much. Just tightens their grip on things (maybe it's also just a copyright thing) and throws out some more limited edition releases for scalpers to take advantage of.

That being said - if someone whats GW to release things so we can buy them - sure, cool. I'm sure it'll be impressive too and well made and it will sell well. But me, I don't deem it necessary or helpful.

Okay, that's a bit polemic there, but I don't feel that GW doing anything with these games actually adds much.

The current GW version of Bloodbowl is miles ahead of the best efforts I've seen out of the fan community, and easily the best edition of the game to date- and I've played since 1st.

Current Necromunda is fairly solid as well, although GW is certainly trying to milk it with splatbooks and Forge World figures - but they have added some interesting wrinkles to the fluff and the hybrid rules that fall between the original game and modern 40K are better in some ways (and worse in others, admittedly).  They're still missing some things from the Specialist Games glory days and the Outlanders box, but that's not entirely a abd thing, some of those rules never worked right.

That doesn't preclude them screwing up Gorkamorka horribly with a relaunch, but frankly I don't see that happening anyway.  After the debacle with Cursed City they've go bigger problems to concern themselves with, not least of which is the looming extinction-level event that affordable, widespread 3D printing will be bringing within a decade or so.

GW has a strong IP.  If they're smart they will embrace 3d printing and sell STL files.

It's readily apparent that the company is transitioning into an IP farm over time.  They'll probably release STLs at some point, but a lot of their money comes from licensing IPs, (relatively) mass-market boardgames, and book publishing already.   I expect that will continue and expand, most likely into more serious attempts at  making profits with video media, be its streaming TV or film.  Wouldn't shock me to see them try to get into the e-sports scene with one of their licensees as well.

But none of that really bodes well for their traditional role as a physical minis manufacturer.

Disney+ will have their video content

A couple of Grots to keep the project ticking over. These are from the current plastic 40k range and they are lovely figures. I've added hair to the left figure using a bit from the ShieldWolf Miniatures orc set.

Definitely curious to see where this goes.  I never liked green orcs, but I like your green orcs - very subdued and desaturated greens work far better than psycho-emerald green guys.  Great stuff.
