Title: Anyone Using CitadelSix Barons War tranfers/decals?
Post by: Mindenbrush on April 14, 2021, 06:26:47 PM
I have been applying some of the CitadelSix Barons War transfers/decals to some shields and barding today.

The shields were easy and the transfers/decals went on easily.

Not quite the same with the horse barding transfers/decals. I was applying 4 griffins to the horse barding and as there are some pronounced folds on the 1st Corps medieval horse barding, I followed the CitadelSix instructions and applied some Micro-Sol first. 3 out of 4 transfers/decals broke up and had to be removed.

Second attempt I applied the Micro-Sol for one position and same thing on the first transfer/decal but I managed to slide it back together.
For the rest I did not use Micro-Sol, just dampened the surface with water.
The third one went on okay and then broke up when I tried to reposition it.
The fourth one went on okay.
It seems that they are very delicate transfers/decals.

Anyone else had challenges applying them?

Have you seen David Imrie's series on applying transfers for caparisons on Facebook?

Well worth studying :)

David is using the LBM decals, the CS are water slide.

Have you glossed the area first before adding the decals? I nearly always do it, especially on uneven surfaces with older and/or thinner decals. Another coat afterwards to seal them on too.

Yes, area glossed and allowed to dry for a couple of days.

The transfers just seem to fall apart when applied to the surface.

Are the he Barton's War you asked about waterslide decals or more like the LBMS?

They are waterslide.  The technical notes accompanying the decals do say they "work best on flat or gently undulating /curved surfaces".  Possibly the 1st Corps figures are too sharp?  Haven't tried them myself yet but they are on the workbench.

Ah right, my bad as they say..... :)

Regret to say I've had similar problems with a set of Citadel Six transfers - very delicate although I used decal medium. I wondered if they were old stock.

I had trouble with the Citadel 6 decals too. I followed instructions, not a newbie etc but they seemed to me to tear up easily, even with only slight adjustments. I never saw any other posts about their (lack of)robustness so always put it down to my being fat fingered. I had bought a few sets but every time I tried I had problems - I think I had 1 success for every 3 - 4 fails. I feel a bit better about myself that others have encountered the same issue!

On the subject of transfers for Medieval Miniatures, these samples are going to be available from LBMS and I assume Claymore Castings (brilliant idea David!). They will have the advantage of being much more robust then your average waterslide transfer.

These samples are for the "Crecy" era part of the dynastic struggle of the Hundred Years War but with a little imagination could be used for earlier and later periods of history.

@Serran and @Goliath, I suspect we are not the only ones but as you say we often think it is us that are the problem, so we often do not voice our concerns.
The transfer sets I have are newly printed, CS had issues with their printer late last year so most sets went out of stock.
I have a couple of the original sets that look better quality than the new ones - which appear to be ‘dot print’ rather than solid colour.

I wrote to CitadelSix Designs explaining the issue. They replied within a couple of hours with an explanation of what may be causing the breakages - excess Micro-sol being one - and offering to replace the transfers.
I thanked them but declined as I find the overpainting of the required white background too time consuming.
The horse in question is currently being stripped of paint and I will start afresh, painting the griffins by hand. Fingers crossed.

Actually, looking at mine today, I don't have horse barding - and I can't see those on the website. It's just surcoat and shield.  Which transfer set were you using?

Thanks, I'd missed those. There might be a slight delay getting on with it until the postie delivers :)
