My Republican Roman Infantry are Agema (early) and Wargames Factory (later) plastics and I would like to add some, ideally plastic, cavalry to each force.
If I added Victrix Republican Roman cavalry and Numidian light cavalry to them would they be compatible? If not compatible any suggestions?
I have a mainly Warlord Games EIR Legion and found that Victrix cavalrymen are giants in comparison.
-
The Victrix Roman Cavalry are giants compared to the Numidians. However the Greek Light cavalry are a better option. I converted them by cutting the torso from a Victrix Italian Legion figures and adding it to the cavalryman along with an Italian style helmet. Sadly the images I posted of the conversions were lost in the photobucket fiasco.

Yeah, Victrix cavalry tend to be much bigger than other ranges, especially the horses themselves.
-
So I if I understand what you are saying the Numidians should be OK with Agema/Wargames Factory infantry and that I would be best using converted Greek light cavalry for the equites?
-
That is what I heard as well. I am curious as well, because I want some Republican Roman cavalry, and have an all Victrix army. However, I do find the cavalry are too big for my tastes anyway....
-
They're beautiful off by themselves, but when they're next to anything else the horses are almost like small elephants lol
-
Do they have to be plastic? As gripping Beast do a compatible size though they are lead.
-
If looking at metals I can recommend those produced by Aventine Miniatures.

Here's some pics so you can judge for yourself...

so I'd say 1st Corps and Field of Glory are smallest
Aventine and Warlord games - medium
Victrix and Gripping Beast Plastic - biggest. I'm doing some Aventine horses now so I'll post pics of them soon too. ( but hardly as big as an elephants! )

Thanks, those are really useful.

Very useful size comparisons there.

The Greek cavalry figures are slightly large compared to the Numidians (which are the best Victrix set - size wise) but still fit in with the Agema figures. I also converted some Wargames Factory Gallic Cavalry to be Republican Romans, with a change of head (I used some boetian helmeted heads) and shields. They match perfectly but the Wargames Factory horses are the ugliest beasts on the planet. :? :?
I have to say however that since the cavalry will be in separate units as long as you are sensible just about every other manufacturor mentioned in the thread will match your figures - except Victrix. :( :(

Looks like Aventine and Warlord seem best suited to my needs.

I took a quick photo of the various metal Roman/Italian cavalry that I have in the lead mountain...

The variation in the horses is more apparent than the riders, particularly from above. I don't have any Victrix cavalry, so I popped a Roman infantryman in the lineup as a comparison. He is a bit larger than the metal cavalry but is similar heftwise so I am happy they work together.

Do you have any elephants? They'd be comparable lol

It looks like any cavalry except Victrix will do! Thanks for doing this - really helpful.

Sorry to be the contrarian here.... but...
I think Victrix Republican Roman cavalry works very well with Agema infantry. Despite the 'they are giants' claims, once painted and based I fail to see them being out of proportions... two images equates 2000 words...
