Yup, a little heard of (well, not at all!) clan for scrapping in Feudal Japan.
Vodkafan and HasBeen only had to mention the chance of playing a little Samurai shenanigans and I’m sold....actually, I’m very easily sold these days...doesn’t take much!
I used to play the original role play game Bushido in my youth, some 35 years since, but I do love the idea of doing a small project (yes, I know, to add to a myriad of other small projects).
I don’t even really know what rules we will be playing, but I’m basing the minis individually then popping them on suitable sabot bases....
I think I’m having to catch up as there seems to be a few painted minis already coming out of the store cupboard.
I had a half painted mini so finished that off!
Unfortunately, he’s not put his armour on yet, so I need to get a few better equipped Samurai warriors.
However, before that, I thought I’d collect and paint a few foot soldiers, so I bought a few Ashigaru with teppo and with yari.
Starting with the arquebusiers, I cleaned up and based the Perry minis......I do like their minis, but BLOODY HELL! why can’t their casting be better?!!
Anyway, finally done.
So...how to paint them? I pondered a bit, James is doing his Blue (I’m crap at blue anyway) and Peter has both red and green troops! I really like red...so instead of black armour and red tunic, I’m reversing that and opting for a red armour.
So here I am at the start.....base red applied.
-
Great start.
When you said small project and skirmish, I was thinking about 6 figures. You are already double that!
-
Very nice start! Really like the red. Looks to be a good solid smooth base coat over black. Which for a red is impressive. Which brand do you use?
As for rules, there is Ronin, which is a brilliant skirmish game. Also some people have made Saga boards for Japan's clans. So that could be worth checking out.
-
Cheers guys...early doors but I am working on these tonight.
For the red, I use Mephiston red GW paint as a base.
Rules wise I think the guys are looking at a modified Pikemans Lament but I have a copy of Ronin.....wouldn’t mind doing that at some point.
And Fred...did I say “ skirmish?”.......I think I said “ shenanigans”! ;)
-

Digits does NOT do small,
if you don't believe me just look at his tree project!

Yes we hope to try out Pikeman's Lament this week, but I too have,
& would like to try out Ronin.
-
Yup....it’s a shame they don’t really have jungles in Japan! :'(
-
But you still have that huge box of bamboo waiting to be used.
-
Oh yes....I do! :D
-
To show progress with this project.
First up three new paint jobs, to bring a 9 figure unit up to 12 figures.
Behind them, and in the following three pictures are the 9, all now based
on 25mm square bases.
The penultimate picture is of the figures that have been waiting, far too
long on the shelf, for some table-top action (hopefully Friday guys).
Oops, I've missed out the Cavalry & the General with his screen. Ah
well should get in front of the camera Friday.
The last picture is of the other three recent paint jobs. Not quite
finished, but fairly close.
-
Ha! My fella can take em all on! lol
Just a bit for me to do to catch up then!
And if 12 man units is the norm....I already have to buy a few to make up my Ashigaru units! Bugger!
-
For the red, I use Mephiston red GW paint as a base.
I knew it! I called it two days ago...
-
That’s how ALL my reds start! I’m sure I once told you...
-
I’m not sure these will come to much, but whilst looking through my garage, I found a batch of minis I once planned for mythical Japanese gaming ( I got them after I stopped playing Bushido for which they were great! :? )
They include oni, killer frogs, turtle dragon, naga, oriental dragon, female monk etc
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/8EE05339-991C-4462-8494-4DBAD83284DA.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)

-
David I too have some Japanese Mythical figures.
I was thinking of them as a mini project after I've
finished off the human stuff (A few figures & MDF
buildings).
-
And there should be the Chinese dragon somewhere in one of the boxes. lol
Did you keep any of the walls and building you started collecting.
-
I don’t remember that mate! :?
-
First try out game. Follow the link for AAR, pictures & comments.

Just re-read the battle report - stunning looking game. Look forward to the continuing saga. Seems that the rain has not eased up! One of the footpaths near me has water running across it - normally seen in winter. Sounds like a penalty to shooting for wet strings / gun powder :-).

looking forwad to see how those hobgoblins pain up - been thinking of getting some myself
-
Those Oni remind me of the old Nick Lund Black Orcs... I wonder how we will work those (and a giant turtle) into Pikeman's Lament?

They are old grenadier hobgoblins - Nick Lund sculpted them around the same time as the chronicle range

Reboot!
Ok….this died quickly so time to rethink.
Just back from holiday and I’ve been looking at “Test of Honor” from Grey for
Now games.
A game I can play on a three foot square that won’t need huge numbers if figures.
I have a few minis coming to get me started. I think they are nearer 32mm than 28mm so the Perry Ashigaru probably won’t work.
As mentioned…I have “some” scenery already……a bamboo forest!
So I need to add a few buildings….probably Oshiro resin casts to get me started.
First minis hopefully arriving tomorrow so will aim to paint up the first shortly.

Nice paddies! How did you do those?
-
Cheers….page 7 / 10 here.

-
Thanks!
-
An impressive amount of Bamboo there David.
-
Thanks! In itself will make a great setting for these games I think!
I have made enough now though…I doubt I will be trying to do many more bases! 🥴
Anyway, good news….my order from Grey for Now arrived. The figures are 32mm but tbh, I have stood a few of my as yet unpainted Perry minis against them and I think a few certainly will mix in.
I have prepped and based a few samurai, the ones just arrived and a Perry, plus a Perry ninja.
I will paint up the first of these shortly.
I also received a set of Torii lanterns, pla prints, designed to take a bulb and battery. I have butchered a couple of sets of cheap Poundland battery tea lights to fit them out with so I’m going to paint a couple of those up too….
-
Wow! You're gonna do all of that while dictating your orders for Casevil? :D :D :D
-
Orders sent fella!
So I have eight of these lanterns and I’m just bulbing up the other four. Should add an element of mood setting to the games…especially in the haunted bamboo forest!
-
Nice work. Orders received too.
-
Ta.
Ok painted my first GFN Samurai. Nice clean figures.
And good news is I think they will mix with the few Perry minis I have too.
-
Two more done

-
Nice.
-
Very nice indeed.
-
Thanks chaps.
I can’t really work black, so quick and dirty ninja!
-
The black on the ninja looks great to me. Where’s he from?
Beautiful table and minis!
-
Perry miniature I think, cheers.
-
Can confirm; I've got one. https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product/sam41-ninja-various-weapons/
-
Yup that’s the one. Probably have the rest of the set somewhere too.
More progress with the GFN minis…..Ashigaru, mostly with yari.
-
Just ordered a couple wall sections and an Inn from Oshiro models….hopefully that will give me a little backdrop soon.
I was looking through my bits boxes and found these…result!
I was also trawling through the internet and there is some cool looking printed scenics…….but then everyone is using it and their tables all look the same 🙁
So I’m trying to resist the urge to buy it, and will try to scratch a few bits like pond and zen gardens myself. Looking at pictures of other peoples projects….the roads tend to feature a crazy paving type of theme. It got me thinking…..I have a tonne and a half of slate in my garden…..
So, to make a test piece.
2mm plasticard……cut to about 7cm wide strips. I will need to buy another sheet as this won’t be quite enough. Bevel and distress edges so not too square.
Then a quick trawl across by slate bed patio area for some flat sided chips, a quick wash…
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_0992.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
Then superglue to secure to plate along with sand to fill gaps. I think it works. A bit rough for any cart wheels I will admit! Lol. But I’m going to paint up this section and see how it looks before spending an hour in the garden digging up chips.
-
So much to love in this thread! 👍
-
Cheers fella….let’s hope so 😉
I ordered some more miniatures today. The rogues and ruffians set plus some Ikko rebels that will help bolster the bandits that will be my first opfor.
The ruffians set has some interesting minis in it.
I also have the bow and arquebus Ashigaru to paint up yet so lots to come.
So the roads worked I think! Just need to make more of them….
Quick set up…..Ninja attack!
-
Now THAT’s service!
Ordered from eBay yesterday…arrived this am! Thanks Wonky Head!
I ordered the rogues and ruffians the first of which I’ve just undercoated here! Looking forward to painting these! Also on paint table three Ashigaru with teppo and an unarmored Samurai.
-
Very cool collection
-
Cheers.
Three Ashigaru with Teppo (arquebus).

-
Hi!
The roads look great!
-
Cheers fella.
So I have now ordered the rules and tokens etc, along with a few other minis, but I am close to having two viable opposing forces now.
Here are the first four of the ruffians set.
The Witch and the Widow
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1091.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
The Drunkard and the Drifter
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1088.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
Nice work David.
-
Fantastic! I've eyed these models to add to my Bandit Buntai.
Great work all around here!. I've shared this thread with some non-LAF buddies for inspiration.
-
Glad you like it, cheers.
Just ordered another clutch of buildings from Oshiro, which will keep me going for a bit I feel.
I have the Unlikely Allies and Ashigaru Scouts sets on order too.
Looking about, I feel a pack of Samurai from Steel Fist, a few alternate Ashigaru from Clash of Clans and a set of villagers may well be on the cards…..
But I have to say I’m trying to keep on top of the minis as I purchase them for this (something I’ve failed to do so on every other project I’ve started 😏) So,m they can probably wait!
Edit :
More roads under construction.
-
I’ve failed to do so on every other project I’ve started
You most definitely ain't alone there buddy. lol lol lol
-
Lovely work on those.
-
The Ruffians are excellent. Particularly like the fellow drinking from the saki bottle.
-
Whilst eagerly waiting on my first order from Oshiro to arrive, I thought I’d make a test strip of yotsume-gaki (four eyed bamboo fencing). Pretty happy with the result but time consuming to make! I hate tying knots!
Still, I need to order some more 1mm plasticard to make a few more strips. I will probably make another four or five like this…that should suffice.
-
Looks good David.
-
This is such a cool thread - love the roads idea, which I think I will copy :D 8)
-
You will need lots of bottles of 29g £1 superglue (Tesco sell “securefix”). Otherwise it’s a doddle.
😉
-
Beautiful!
Love the roads and bamboo fence.
T
-
Loving your work, just gets better the older you’re getting.
Hope cold getting better.
-
Thanks Troy!
Not as messy today tbh thanks….eyes a bit glued so no painting tonight!
I have however made a few more sections of fence. Hopefully finish them tomorrow.
-
love all the terrain.
-
Thank you. A bit more for you then. Fences finished along with a couple of cultivated areas so can do things like this…
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1103.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
This will be enough fencing. As I can gather, they were not particularly struck with keeping livestock. No sheep, or pigs (Japan had a pretty feral wild pig) and only a few cattle kept for hauling plough shares or carts) so really not too much use for large amounts of stock fencing.
Besides which…if I see another knot any time soon…..🤪
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1107.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
Another painted Samurai without his armour.
-
Great project :)
-
Those fences look great!
-
For your bamboo, did you dip them before spraying them? Specifically the brown lower vs green upper part.
-
I simply spray them black
Paint the whole thing in green yellow ( Vallejo)
Wash in Agrax earthshade
Dry brush with desert yellow
Paint the knots black
Light dry brush everything with admin grey
Then paint the sections between the knots with desert yellow.
I may have done a step too many but it works for me.
-
David, I think the question was about the 'living' bamboo (the groves) and not the fences. ;)
-
Ah…ok. 😉
Sprayed the bottom desert yellow then simply added Agrax wash yes.
-
I can’t do faces…but this mounted samurai’s face was a poor cast and really a bit of a blob so looks worse than usual! However I’m happy with the rest of his paintwork.
I like the figure though so he will be prominent in my regular selection.
And in a small departure for me……SMALL trees! Going to have a go at a few cherry blossom trees. Here’s a start….
-
Yup, I bought one of these off the internet. It didn’t look this bad in the image but it’s basically …crap!
Hence why I’m making my own. Now I wanted a particular foliage / blossom flock from Huge Miniatures from the States, but delivery and duties are too high. I have found a blossom flock from Greenstuff World which I’ve ordered but it’s a tad darker than I wanted and monotone.
So, my solution is to salvage what little I can from this monstrosity and then mix it in with the Greenstuff World flock when it arrives.
Anyway, we shall see how that works out. For now, the tree trunks are painted and stood ready….
-
Have a look at dca flock.
-
Unfortunately what looks like the right stuff is actually flock not foam sponge. Right colour though. Anyway…I’ve ordered the Greenstuff world pot now…..it will be fine I hope! Ta
-
Looking at this picture taken in Tokyo, there is allot of white in with the pink.
-
On that variety I guess….lucky there are any number of varieties so some are darker I’m sure! For what I need this will be fine. 😉
Edit: ok seeds of doubt had me searching high and low…..I now have light pink and white foam coming too! I have spent far more than I expected to! I may have to make MORE trees to justify the cost! Lol
I’m still waiting in my first building delivery but hopefully soon I will be able to have my first test game. I have also ordered a pack of printed villagers to add colour. I need to purchase a few stalls now I think. I have seen a few distressed and modified sarrisa ones which look good….I may have a go myself.
Meanwhile..I shall simply keep painting the odd mini!
-
Another Samurai.
I need to concentrate on finishing the ruffians though I think.
-
Ah…ok. 😉
Sprayed the bottom desert yellow then simply added Agrax wash yes.
Yup, the forests. How well does that hold up as it does a nice job of conveying the effect.
-
Cheers. Yup the bamboo isn’t great at taking paint. So the bottom being the less “flexed” when in use just about holds the army painter desert yellow which is slightly sealed with the wash I feel.
Works for me anyway.
Another ruffian…looking for something to squish!
-
You are cranking these out at an amazing clip! The models look gorgeous to boot!
What’s your formula for the skin tone?
-
Cheers Jack! To be honest…I don’t like faces so I try to use the quickest method I can.
Simply paint the face with AK golden flesh. Slightly watered down Agrax earth wash, then reikland flesh shade pick out none and cheeks in golden flesh. Finally light reikland wash over the highlights.
Anyway, another ruffian.
-
Hi,
Great post.
Great scenery.
But can you give Some more information about the miniatures?
What firm you buy them? I am quite a newby concerning Samurai skirmishing.
-
No problem. Pretty much all these recent posts are Grey for Now Games miniatures.
https://greyfornow.com/
-
Thanks, mouthwatering figures
-
You're really pumping out some very nice figures!
-
Thank you!
Well this offering is my attempt at a cherry tree orchard!
As the man says….
So….just need a few buildings now. We have a fair bit ready to play over.
-
And on to the next scenic…..bamboo fish drying rack ( because I had a pair of spare fish). One for the paint tray.
-
The bird eyeing up the fish is a nice touch.
-
Yup it was an easy decision as I painted a batch of them for my pirate port.
I think I need a few more fish though….looks a tad sparse!
-
I think I need a few more fish though….looks a tad sparse!
Maybe the bird has already had his lunch!
-
Could be…but I’ve ordered a few resin fish to flesh it out a bit.
Meanwhile, the last two minis from the rogues and ruffians set. The Paymaster and The Signaller
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1175.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
The full gang
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1171.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
A couple of sets of Sarrissa Yatai stalls arrived. I will only build a couple, and having decided to modify the roof on one of them…..I will NEVER repeat it again! Lol
I wanted it to look a bit more rustic and as my games are set near a large bamboo forest, I want to reflect that somehow.
Waiting for some bits of clutter to arrive to finish it off properly.
-
@digits
Simply paint the face with AK golden flesh. Slightly watered down Agrax earth wash, then reikland flesh shade pick out none and cheeks in golden flesh. Finally light reikland wash over the highlights.
i assume you mean "pick out nose and cheeks in golden flesh"? Either way, your skin tones look fantastic. I'm assuming you use the same formula for all the skin and not just the faces.
(I, too, hate painting faces...I'm one of those that skip the eyes)
Keep up the great work! this thread is inspiring!
-
Yup…nose and cheeks. And yes I use to some extent on other areas of flesh / hands in particular.
-
That stall looks great, but I can see why it would be a one off!
-
Ha! Yes indeed….not sure what medication I’d taken, but that one took the biscuit!
I have just ordered a cheap bamboo place mat of eBay to see if it will give me a similar outcome without all the string work faffing about…..we shall see.
Edit:
A few peasants / Ikko-Ikki / bandits
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1180.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
fantastic.
-
Ok now I see the rice field with water buffalo. ;)
-
I’d say he’s bloody big enough….but the perspective here would suggest otherwise!
-
Cracking little resin minis these….maybe in hindsight I should have gone 32mm but as they are background civilians I’m none too worried. My favourite is the over burdened chap at the front.
Bamboo place mat arrived. The stitching is too far apart to fit two lines but should still look ok I think.
Work progressing on the first stall. Simple presentation tray (card / balsa).
A quick look on the herb rack (and a little sand) and it’s easy to fill the compartments.
Also my first order from Oshiro has arrived so will be setting about that soon enough….
-
Pretty pleased with this! I just need to add a few bits to the stall but one roadside vendor!
-
More nice work David.
-
This is too good… makes me wanna quit the hobby!!
Seriously though, great work!
-
Thanks Jack! 😉
So my first order from Oshiro has been painted. A few walls and an Inn. Enough to start playing on I think.
I have another order coming with a few more village houses…..but looking here it could get very congested with so few walls….may have to order more!
Meanwhile, we are planning a first game for next Tuesday so me thinks we will play on this.
You will notice a pair of wild boar? The Japanese in this period didn’t keep a lot of livestock….the fencing here was to keep the indigenous piggy’s out of the crops.
-
beautiful.
love the little lights.
-
:o
I can’t believe all of this has come together so fast.
I gotta ask though… where’d you get your bamboo? Mine looks similar, but yours might be taller?
-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254787995573
12 cm high.
Cheers both.
Jack…I go though bursts of momentum when I get excited about a particular project. I’m making the most of my mojo right now….you never know when it will crash!
-
What a gorgeous table! And those market stall goods look great.
-
Lovely table David. Well done.
-
Thanks guys!
So I thought I’d paint up a civilian. Reasonably happy……..
…..though I wasn’t best pleased fifteen minutes before hand! The problem with printed minis…..too bloody brittle! Give me a metal mini any day of the week!
-
Oof. I hate to see it.
Maybe I’m a Luddite in this area, but I don’t like 3D printed minis. I much prefer metal as well.
-
There is a lot of figures available you can’t get in metal for sure and they have their place. For me though, they are far too brittle. I won’t buy minis with weapons like swords etc in resin for that reason.
Added a few more fish to the rack. I will say painting fish ( even dead ones) isn’t my bag. But it will be a useful piece of scatter scenery.
Edit:
Realised I need archers to play the first game…..so four archers.
-
David
Keep the mojo flowing.
This is looking lovely.
-
Thanks Bob….I’m trying to for sure!
Just bought a few more walls and my second buildings order in en route. That will give me a fair amount to game about.
I also ordered the Takeda’ Court box set so will have more samurai to paint.
And a coincidence….I’m reading “Musashi” by Yoshikawa and GFN just announced releasing a Musashi mini……so looking forward to that too.
On the scenic side, I’m considering making a few smaller path sections, and a few more small fence sections and another stall. At some point I need to sort a river and pond too.
Plus we have a first play through on Tuesday!
-
Hope your play thro goes well.
-
Cheers, let’s hope so!
Couldn’t sleep last night so early start and another set of walls finished. This will give me flexibility to create central table compound etc….besides, as you know from my ww2 threads…..walls and fences are a big favourite of mine! Lol
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1225.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
The camouflage is good this time. I can't see the hidden 88mm anti-tank gun. lol lol lol
-
That’s the beauty of a bamboo thicket! 😉
Another of the resin civilians.
-
Those walls look lovely. The civilian figures are full of character even if they are dodgy resin!
-
Yup, they do and these aren’t too many other options for civilians out there so resin will have to do! I like adding civilians to tables as they help set the atmosphere I think. There are some Perry civilians I think so will aim to get those at some point.
Anyway, todays offering a wandering Samurai. Japan does have some aggressive boar as it happens!
-
Love the 3d printed figures, could you tell us who makes them?
Thanks
William
-
Bought on eBay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304028021653
-
Thanks I will definitely have to get a set.
-
That boards looking very good.
Does that mean printed figures are brittle for gaming purposes. Ie those that are ham fisted like myself.
-
Depends on the figures. Anything with spiky bits or this weapons would be worrying me. However simple crowd minis balling their fists would be absolutely fine I think.
Ranked up minis probably not such a problem if based together however but I’m worried about individual minis needing a lot of handling. Personal choice but hey ho…
-
So we played our first intro battle…..twice…..tonight….loved it! Worth the effort over the past few weeks.
First I painted a few more civilians. These women NEVER batted an eyelid despite the carnage happening about their garden! Lol
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1235.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
So now we can start campaigning properly…….😉
-
That looks so good! Those peasant women look fantastic: love the patterned cloth. Glad to hear that it played well too.
-
Aye looking forward to the next few weeks…..more games on the way.
Anyway, thought I’d share my latest bout of insanity with you…..ok, it’s no bridge over the Kwai but it did my head in last night! The hardest bit was figuring how to bend the poles….then it was brain numbing doing all the. knotting!
-
Would they not steam and bend. Just be careful with your paws if bending bamboo over steaming kettle.
Nice battle.
-
I ended up cooking them in boiling water for twenty minutes!
-
Superb work! :-*
-
That really is an impressive piece of work.
-
Thanks both….luckily I’m starting to run out of bamboo usage ideas…..despite still having half the bag of skewers left! 🥴
Anyway…plenty to do this weekend as these arrived and need painting.

The hardest bit was figuring how to bend the poles….then it was brain numbing doing all the. knotting!
That is a thing of beauty though!
-
What a great project. You can't go wrong with the Oshiro buildings, they're excellent. Its good to see the civilians and 'stuff' on the table, it makes for a much more interesting set up, as well as some scenario options.
-
Man6 thanks…yup I like the Oshiro models. Don’t take up too much space on the smaller table, plenty of character…and a complete departure from the throng of laser cut wood or printed models that seem to dominate. Easy enough to paint too.
Anyway, one painted bridge! Every bridge I see for this period is a little ornate red wood bridge…this will fit the grittier rural village better I think. Maybe not everyone’s paint taste but I’ve hit on a bamboo colouring that works for me. Wide enough to take the multibases too.
I suppose at some point I really MUST make a river! 😉
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1256.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
I suppose at some point I really MUST make a river! 😉
Get over it David! lol lol lol
Bridge looks lovely.
-
Then you’ll need a little old man with fishing pole sitting upon the build. ;D
-
Find me a Japanese fisherman in 28mm and I just might!
-
Find me a Japanese fisherman in 28mm and I just might!
Many years ago I picked up such a fisherman, & a water buffalo, from a shop in the
Birmingham China town. They were crude pottery, but were OK in the background.
A little big for my 25mm Vietnam, but would do in 28mm.
Mine went with the Vietnam collection when I sold it.
-
Digits,
I am a big fan of all of your bamboo constructions! How fiddly are they to make?
Lon
-
Cheers…well…..not so much fiddly…..as time consuming.
The only real tip I have is to glue each joint first with pva or superglue. I prefer superglue as it’s quicker. As soon as it takes, tie the knot to the joint. This is by it takes time, because you are tying each knot as you go. I also immediately add a dab of superglue to each knot as I make it to stop it unravelling. With waxed thread this is important I’ve found.
I don’t use a ruler….each stick is roughly judged as I find it looks a tad more rustic. Also when painting, add a drop of black to the end of each pole to make it look hollow.
-
Couple of painted Oshiro buildings including temple. Starting to realise 3 x 3 doesn’t give you a huge amount of space! Lol
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_4506.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
Think I may need a couple more garden pieces / planted fields to dot about…..
-
Lovely 8)
-
That table does look a treat.
-
That looks great.
-
Ta.
So, I decided to make a smaller bridge ( so I could also do a simple tutorial at some point) in order to progress making a pond.
Pond mock up
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1274.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
And with some scraps I decided on a third bridge….well…. maybe a simple stream crossing…..
-
They all look fine David, but given your WW2 gaming, is this... a Bridge too far? lol
-
Wow, these look great!
I'll probably go with a little red bridge from the aquarium aisle, but your table will look much better.
: 3
-
Cat…give it a go…..not difficult, just a tad brain numbing! I personally can’t tie the same knot twice….🤭
-
Digits, I'm sure I could do it. It's a time-management decision...
I've flagged ToH as a fun tertiary game that I really like to play, but will try to spend minimal time getting it to the table.
Sleepy Hollow (Donnybrook) is my fanatical modelling level game.
The Warriors (Mean Streets) is my get it looking good level game currently under construction.
DBN is my needs more basic buildings for various theaters game that's already been slowing down due to The Warriors.
-
Fair enough then….aquarium shop it is then! Lol
-
To quote Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Heroes:
Think that bridge will be there and it will be there. It's a mother, beautiful bridge and it's gonna be there. Okay?
-
Great film! 😉
Ok, so showing this now…..just in case it goes Pete Tong when I pour the liquid water! To say I’m bricking it is an understatement!
Blossom drying. Will add a few tufts and bits of ground foliage plus a few water lilies after the water cure.
After my last ponds went milky white, a problem I believe with pva contact with the liquid water….this time I’m going to try Woodlands Scenic Deep Pour Clear Water with a little of their moss green water tint added. If anyone has any experience of this product, please say so now…
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_4514.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
Lovely :)
-
Great film! 😉
Oh most certainly.
Pond etc. looking great so far David.
-
That pond is looking very promising: I hope the pour goes well.
-
Tip. Once finished don’t leave it in direct sunlight for long length of time.
Left my water marsh on window sill for few weeks and it turned cloudy.
Note to self as mummy used to say. Put things away.
-
Hmmm my Vietnamese pond went very milky…but from all the reading….I think it reacted with pva in the pond. I have just poured this stuff…..and the inch I had left over in the mixing pot is rock hard after 10 minutes of sitting unpoured! It’s covered over to stop any dust settling and keep it warm.
Adding the drops for tinting is as far as I can see totally hit and miss! What looks fairly opaque in the mixing pot looks fairly transparent now I poured it! Ah well…..live and learn for next time!
-
Yes, pond art is not an exact art, but fun!
Pondering the practicalities of bridges, I may make a plain plank one without railings so figure stands can cross in smoother style.
-
Yup, to be fair that’s why I used the smaller bamboo place mat for the deck as it’s flatter than rounder skewered. Planks would look good.
Edit:
Ok…the water has hardened….but I should have left the grass off until I’d poured the water to avoid this leaching! 😕
I think it will cover up, so I will have to do that next before the finishing touches…
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/b76/DigitsDavid/IMG_1297.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
-
Fixed it by simply grassing over it!
I’m pretty happy with this….nice piece of scenery to pretty up the board.

-
That's lovely!
-
Indeed it is 8)
-
brilliant.
-
The water where it’s leaked onto the grass would look great on tidal water. Seaweed and alga left behind.
Very nice piece of scenery. 👍
-
Cheers all.
Brian…just in time for Pete arriving tomorrow! 😉
-
Very good result there David.
-
Great job David.
-
That looks excellent, great work!
-
That looks good.
-
Cheers everyone.
-
A lovely piece of scenery - the lily pads are a wonderful touch.
-
Thanks.
So getting ready for Saturdays big game. I have had the chance to play lots of practice games of late but Saturday sees us playing with our chosen armies. Jamie has collected and painted his Sohei monks….looking forward to this!
Table ready…..I’ve been putting a few more touches together including more fencing…you a see new arch here.
Write up after the game….
-
Your modelling is magazine worthy.
-
“Gardeners’s Weekly”? 😉😁
Cheers fella!
-
“Gardeners’s Weekly”? 😉😁
David! Don't get involved with THEM...it's just one plot after another! :D
-
Groan…..! 😉
A couple of minis from Takeda’s Court set…both of which find their way into my retinue.
So today, Jamie brought over his monks, led by Ichirai on the horse with no name! Great paint jobs on these, they look brilliant! He’s hooked as well……been ordering yet more minis and building his first dwelling!
We played I Spy…searching for the missing spy who was hiding somewhere about the hamlet.
Long and short of it, great fun was had here as the two forces sped to the task of searching out the three possible locations. Both parties searched and cleared two of them, but my fellas, clearly in need of a trip to the opticians, kept searching around the collapsed cart, but that little minx was clearly able to roll herself up tight and hide in a cookie jar me thinks!
Eventually my hero, Digitomi, scampered across and found the hidden spy, and with the enraged monk poised to attack them both, he started to escort her back and away from the melee.
The monk caught up with him and deliver a severe blow, knocking Digitomi off his feet!
My guys closed ranks and set about the mad horseman, finally allowing my hero to escort the spy off the table!
Great game, lots of addictive fun!
The aftermath revealed that Digitomi learned a new skill “Red Mist”, and increased his honour to 6.
My champion permanently increased his ability to hold three skills in the future.
The monk captain was captured and subsequently ransomed back, having to stump up a little of his retainer cash pot, so he will be down one point if recruitment in our next engagement!
Looking forward to it!
A few more game pics…..

Great Work Digits on the miniatures and the Terrain, I have one question, do you remember the brand and possibly type of the Neoprene Matt that you are using under the terrain and miniatures by any chance?
-
What a superb-looking game. Excellent scenery and great figures. :-*
-
It was a great game and good fun. The enjoyment helped with being able to game on Dave’s terrain.
Just putting my brain into gear and trying to decide on another opposing force.
What surprises do I have in store for Dave?
-
Cheers all.
Mouse mat link

I also have the jungle mat at 3 x 3.
Jamie, the monks are great. I particularly like their musketeers! Interested to see what companion you salt in on for the next game….looking forward to it!
-
Well done David & Jamie, it all looks superb, and you both had fun...Bonus!
-
That is a beautiful table. Sounds like a fun game too.
-
Cheers chaps.
I found some moss covered plastic pebbles on Amazon so thought I’d knock up a quick zen garden. I couldn’t get neat lines as I was using scale ballast, but you get the idea!

Holy fish pond koi! And there is one in his pond. :o
I do hereby and officially nominate Digits for the following award:
Lead Adventure Forum Master Terrain Maker Simultaneous Diversity of Projects Master with Very Colorful Butterfly Wings. (MTMSDPMVCBW for short lol)
Now, one of you talented sculptors need to come up with a figure to go with the award I am quite sure he will win. And, good luck, you can leave it for him to paint it - and do a brilliant job on it.
And now I know why some of his other projects I've been following have, temporarily, fallen by the way side.
Man, this is beautiful and inspiring work. Great job.
-
Great garden!
The fight has gone across it already, so of course it could use a bit more raking...

-
Good call! Of course it has! Thanks Cat!
Fifteens….you are a lunatic fella! 😉😁

No, I think it should be:-
Master Of Stupendous Terrain, Daily Offering Prodigious Exciting Yield.
Or Most Dopey. lol lol lol
Excelent work, by the way, David.
-
You can find great gems on all David’s projects. Still one of my favourites is the apple barrels caught in the cattle stampede “vulture creek” or the grass skirted jazz band daftest Africa.
Do like those moss stones. Is it static flock on them?
-
David, just a thought on Zen gravel gardens.
I am sure I have seen bead place-mats.
If you could get some & cut shapes out of them... worth a look anyway. :)
-
This thread is a treat, fantastic work! I just ordered a couple of sarissa buildings and those bamboo trees myself. :-*
-
Wonderful terrain, beautiful figures.
-
Nice.

Thanks guys.
Game booked for tomorrow night…..so had to get up early this am to finish off a few bits of fencing and paint a couple of store houses, another village hut and a wooden barracks.
Layout now for tomorrow.

Lovely :)

That looks lovely, especially the low angle shots. :-*

Thanks!
Well great game last night….brutal and engaging….so much so we forgot to take many pics, and once we realised….it was closer to the end of the game!
As it happened, we played the follow up game to Spy, Breakthrough. This saw me trying to hurry the spy I found last game across the table but Jamie’s monks were blocking the way!
Slaying the monks companion with the first attack looked like it may be a quick game!
However, we were playing with 29 points…..something we have come to realise is too much to guarantee squeezing in a game in the available hours, plus restricting the table a little. None the less we pressed on, having to call it a draw as the night closed in!
However, a few great moments. One of Jamie’s Temple Guard proved to be a real tough input to crack! He withstood many an attack and it became personal trying to hammer him down!
I lost all my characters by the end, with Jamie’s head monk, wounded but still bossing the table at the end. Had we been able to continue, it was obvious he’d go on to win I think.
My falconer had been given the responsibility to shepherd the spy but this was a slow process and at one point he lost his nerve and she ran and his in the nearest copse….luckily his keen eye found her again, but he was too far back to move here forward enough.
Great fun though, looking forward another game before the New Year!
A few last minute pics from the game

Looks wonderful, well done lads.

Looks good. I've only just read the find the spy game, great concept.
-
Scenes Akira Kurosawa would be proud of, well done
